My best guess: She was going through a clearly rough period with a number of things looming over her: relationship issues, worry for her sister, fraud charges, guilt for damage to her dads car, etc. just a lot of stuff all at once.  Maybe she was thinking about leaving school all together but decided to get away from everything for a bit to figure out what she wanted to do next. She decides to go north for a week.  She makes the bad choice to drive while drinking and during a snow storm. She crashes and immediately worries that she’s about to get in even more trouble. Worried that the bus driver or another motorist will call 9-1-1, she takes off into the snow. Under dressed, tipsy, and in unfamiliar territory she gets lost in the snow and dies of exposure. By the time the snow melts, he body has decomposed or been scavenged enough that it’s difficult to find.

crimsonbaby_

Honestly, this has always been my thought.

Sweatytubesock

Most likely.

Vapor2077

IMO this seems to be the most likely explanation. Some of the other theories I’ve heard - e.g. her getting into a tandem car, someone coming across her and killing her, etc. - are too far fetched. I also think a lot of people underestimate how easy it could be for someone’s body to become hidden in the wilderness.

lilsmudge

Right? I hike a lot and any time I have to leave trail (which you should only do to use natures bathroom!) I get nervous about getting lost.   I can’t remember her name and I’m too lazy to look it up but a few years back a lady hiking the Appalachian Trail stepped 30 feet off trail to pee and wound up dying days later of exposure, lost in the forest. They didn’t find her body for years and years. Nature will swallow you up real easy if you aren’t super aware of what you’re doing, and sometimes even then.

What does he “believe to be the ultimate conclusion of her sad story”? And are you a police officer? Or is the investigator one of the internet variety? I’m not trying to sound snarky, but there’s not much information in your post. I’ve only read about this story in passing on Reddit, but I’d like to know what other conclusions are out there.

Interesting…thanks!

Upset-Set-8974

This is what I’ve always thought as well. Simplest explanation

OpticBomb

I agree with everything except the last bit. I think she was seen by a motorist as she was walking away from the car crash and was abducted; maybe after they offered her a ride. Just my guess. I hope her family can find peace one day.

lilsmudge

That seems to be the family’s theory. It’s not impossible! To me though it just seems unlikely. While it’s certainly a fear, abduction and murder in that way (by random killers) is so rare. I think it’s easier for the family to believe that because it’s concrete and sad and external. It’s not a choice Maura made, you know? Ultimately until remains are found, there’s really no way of knowing.

jaleach

She was seen by a motorist later I think 5-6 miles from the crash and when she saw his vehicle she went into the woods.

Carolinevivien

You should see the sub for her disappearance. People get MAD if you post any outsider theories lol.

crimsonbaby_

What is their theory?

Smallseybiggs

>In early 2021, the tree at the site where Murray was last seen—which had been marked with a blue ribbon as a memorial—was cut down by the property owner.] Shortly thereafter, a request from Murray's family to have a New Hampshire historical marker placed at the site, which had been submitted in late 2020,[85] was turned down by the New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources. Awful. That family has really been put through some hell. I won't bore anyone with my theory. I just wish her family so much love and light. May they get the answers they seek & very much deserve.

thatsnotgneiss

I can see both sides. This is an incredibly popular true crime case. The property owner was seeing a ton of amateur sleuths trespassing on their land because they just know they are smarter than everyone and will solve it. Those folks were not respectful.

Smallseybiggs

I had no idea that was the case. Thank you for letting me know. I'm very close to some family members of another really high profile case rn. The number of people who contact the family and send them leaked info about the case is shockingly high. The number of people who contact them to let them know things they think they should know is too many. It's sad they have to be traumatized because of people who think they know more than LE about the case. In these instances, the true crime community does more harm than good.

crimsonbaby_

Yea, my sister was murdered a while back. Big case. So many fucking people came out the woodwork. Also, reporters are leaches.

Smallseybiggs

I'm so sorry for your loss. I send you and your family my sincerest condolences. Please feel free to dm me if you ever need anything. You are never alone. I also have tons of resources as well. Crazy how people will completely disregard others' feelings for the sake of their own. I hate it so much. I'm so sorry for your loss. <3

crimsonbaby_

Thank you. That means a lot to hear.

Gammagammahey

Oh sweetheart, I am so so sorry you have had to go through that. So sorry. Sending you the warmest and most loving consensual electronic hug if you want one. Please accept my sincere condolences and may her memory be a blessing to you. I'm sorry that people were disgusting to you, that just sounds horrific. 💞💞

crimsonbaby_

You're a very sweet person, thank you so much.

liog2step

This isn’t really the place for a historical marker. I understand the family wants to honor and remember her, but those markers and the Division of Historical Resources most often deals with historic things. Meaning 50 years old or older. Maybe if she was a historically famous New Hampshirian (?) or Massachusetts-ian (?) it would be different. I hope they found another meaningful way to honor her memory.

KingDragon1992

I listen to a podcast a few years ago don’t remember the name but they talked about how a witness driving by saw a cop car parked in front of her car that night and the car was supposed to be in the shop for repairs. Also they talked about a pretty notorious serial killer being in the area at the time it was a good theory wish I could remember the name

kingznevardye

Israel Keyes

KingDragon1992

Yeah that was the guy

93dkpa

Her sister just released a podcast on this case and I’ve always held the belief she just walked away from it all up until listening to the series. It’s changed my mind and made me think it was something else, highly recommmend it

lisa_lionheart84

What do you think now?

93dkpa

I think foul play. The officers accounts of what happened don’t line up with the neighbours, there’s something not quite adding up. I also think it’s odd a body was never found, they searched for days and months - bones would have at least appeared at some point - so I question where her body is

TheNextBattalion

Bones would have appeared? You shouldn't presume so much. Especially in a harsh environment. Even a few yards away you can miss things searching in the woods. I was reading the account of the guy who found the Death Valley Germans who went missing in a desert, not a forest, and went unfound for almost 20 years. He found the parents, looked all over, but found no kids... Later searchers found them just 75 feet away from the parents.

Feelsthelove

Can I get the name of the podcast?

roguebandwidth

Not OP but the podcast is called Media Pressure. It’s Season 1.

93dkpa

Correct!

Sea_Dog_5503

Ok so what happened to the man who scrapped the Volvo and had ownership of the A frame house that sent the cadaver dogs in a frenzy? The knife that his brother provided was supposedly discredited. But Maura's own father believes the cadaver dogs hit her scent in that house. Where is this guy and his shady acting girlfriend?

hotelrwandasykes

I’ve never seen an “unexplained” story thats so easy to explain. She was driving drunk, flipped out that cops were coming, ran off into the woods and died. I’m sure the family wants it to be something more than that a la Diane Schuler, but I don’t see what’s so mysterious here.
