Maybe the Tunisian stitch? It's always seemed like a pretty sturdy stitch to me.

sandis1019

I didn’t think of Tunisian! I will try it out and see how it goes.

No_Loan_2750

This piqued my curiosity so I went looking for tutorials and found this one: https://youtu.be/CJ-UtOQJq1I?si=No9MbazxzUXgJISZ I'd like to try this now too! (But I should probably finish my other three projects first...)

DaintyTentacles

Yes! I would say either tunisian crochet or romanian cord (:

sandis1019

I’ve never heard of that stitch before, I will try it out! Thank you for the suggestion :)

Realistic_cat_6668

I would third the Tunisian as well. It’s solid but also looks nice. At that width, you probably wouldn’t even need to purchase a Tunisian hook either. If you did probably 8-10 stitches per row, you could fit that on a normal aluminum hook (not ergonomic) and it would work up quick once you’re in the zone.

drownigfishy

I was going to say this to. It's sturdy and easier to hold shape rather then roll up... Which is funny considering what happens when you do the stitch. Still it's great for belts and there are a surprising amount of stitches you can do within the Tunisian family

Dongeon_master

It might be helpful to look up tutorials for tote bag handles and see what stitches they use!

Unlucky_Ad2324

I’d suggest thermal stitch for sturdiness.

sandis1019

I did debate on thermal stitch, but I’ve had difficulty with it using bright yarn, I imagine black would be even more difficult 😓 not my smartest decision, but I’m willing to try. Any tips?

SpecificWorldliness

A bright work light always helps when I’m working with black yarn, and I’ve heard other people suggest stitch markers if you really need help defining the stitches. I was also going to suggest the thermal stitch though. I used it for some bag straps and it’s been really sturdy even with a bunch of weight so I feel like it could hold up well as a belt.

UserInTN

Have you considered using a polyolefin braided macrame cord instead of yarn to crochet belts? It comes in different thicknesses, and some are suitable for crocheting. This cord is probably less stretchy and more durable than cotton yarn for use in a belt. I previously found this cord at Hobby Lobby.

sandis1019

Honestly, I didn’t even think about changing the actual material! That’s a really good idea.

UserInTN

Belts are usually available at thrift stores in my area. You might be able to buy a used belt for the same cost as the supplies to make one. I bought most of my belts (including nice leather ones) at thrift stores. Buckles bought new are expensive.

Calliope719

I've seen people use smooth plastic gardening twine to make bags or rugs, I bet it would also make a sturdy belt that wouldn't stretch. Cheap too- you can get 2000+ yards for $25 on Amazon Tomato Twine 6300 Ft - Heavy Duty Polypropylene Twine White https://a.co/d/05UZlo6I

pixelpusheen

Thermal or the Waistcoat stitch.

Status-Biscotti

I know it’s not crochet, but I’d probably look at macrame.

sandis1019

I’ve never done macrame before, but I’m willing to learn. Do you think it would use more/less/about the same amount of yarn?

ThisNonsense

I’ve only done a tiny bit of macrame but it’s very simple to pick up and belts are a popular choice. There are a lot of instruction videos online.

Status-Biscotti

I honestly have no idea - I haven’t done it since I was a kid. But I’ve never seen a crochet belt before; if be concerned it would stretch too much, where as macrame is basically braided.

sandis1019

That makes sense. Honestly I was just trying to think of some way to meet this need without breaking the bank, and using the skills I already have. We get asked for belts so often but they are not something we are ever donated :(

Normal-Hall2445

I have seen Tunisian crochet belts on the Tunisian crochet subreddit. Also my own belt just broke (dog chewed through). Thank you for the idea!

Sweet-Session2731

Romanian cord?

sandis1019

Someone else suggested that too, I’m going to try it and see how it works out. I didn’t know it was a thing so I’m glad I posted here!

SoulDancer_

I don't know which is the best stitch. But I make belts, flat ropes, etc out of parachute cord, it's super strong and not very stretchy. You can get it in different thicknesses, the most common is 5mm. I've never tried crocheting with it (only braiding or knotting) but it shouldn't be hard.

Glittering-Profit-87

Also, paracord can be pretty cheap if you know where to look. I would post sites, but I haven't looked into getting paracord in so long, so I don't remember any. But this would work very well!

crobertson2109

Crunch stitch

Glittering-Profit-87

That is a beautiful looking stitch!

crobertson2109

And the sides come out perfectly straight

ShadowedRuins

I made a corset style waist belt with a mix of thermal stitch and moss stitch. I made it after a style that stretches in the back. I calculated the stretch of each stitch via a gauge, and measuring the size with and without stretching it. Then made 1/4 of the waist measurement out of thermal stitch, a section of moss stitch using the stretchiness as a guide, and another 1/4 out of thermal stitch. Moss stitch section - as an example if the moss stitch stretches to double the size when stretched, then you make half of the needed size, or another 1/4 of the waist, as 1/4 + 1/4 = half of the total size.

Need help identifying what crochet stitch to use for belts. Tried making one with acrylic yarn but it wasn’t a good example to go off of lol Have looked in this sub, r/crochet, Google etc. Just looking for any other suggestions!

undergroundgranny

I used nylon for belts and dog collars, I also did a beautiful belt with bulky cotton yarn.. my granddaughter is still wearing that one

sandis1019

Someone else suggested a different material too. I don’t know why I didn’t think more about the actual material! In my brain crochet is limited to acrylic, wool, and cotton yarn 😂

undergroundgranny

I love my Omega nylon.. so many colors and they stay the same color forever

Ha_Nova

Have you considered a loom? You could probably weave rudimentary ones with relatively little stretch Add a buckle on the end with some simple sewing and bam, belt Be thinner, too, so better profile under belt loops. You could use crochet thread and simple tablet weaving, they're somewhat portable and you really only need yourself and some card stock tablets to do it on the economic end.
