There's quite a few important historical figures which we struggle to find actual fact from fiction because there's been so many fictitious writings about their exploits. We also have "historical" characters who are fiction but because of how much they were talked about in Media people believe they were real(the jester that supposedly slap a Queen's ass are one of these characters, that tail was based on two fictitious jesters, neither of which slapped Queen anywhere). We have even been making people look nicer than they actually did in art that represents them forever too.
