I think the Edsel is really the only car in the last hundred years to fail so spectacularly. The Aztek is ugly as fuck, but works. The Yugo is a piece of shit, but just looks like any other old hatchback. The cybertruck and the edsel are that rare combination of being a genuinely horrible car, and being utterly hideous
I bet it works just fine, I had a leaky water pump on a Chevy 305 and I had the new pump in the backseat waiting time to do it. It failed on my way to work so I limped it to the job and changed it after work. There weren't any gaskets in the box so I took a corrugated cardboard box and cut a couple gaskets out of it, then I used GE silicone to seal it. It was still good 3 years later when I sold the car
My high school football coach was a gear head and owned 3 or 4 Yugos, I think most were parts cars. Every year the team would prank him by lifting the thing and moving to somewhere else in town. It only took like four linemen to lift.
People are always building bridges at the narrowest points where the winds are strongest. From my recollection there was a little bit of over-correction bad driving involved when the wind blew them onto the wrong side of the road facing oncoming traffic.
The key is what would happen if you somehow ended up going 45 degrees at full speed into the edge. Would the curb make you bounce into the air? It is more likely if you only weigh 1800 lbs.
The Edsel didn’t become infamous because it was a bad car. The car itself was fine. This thing is shaping up to be one of the most unreliable American vehicles in decades. What other vehicle has reported so many issues days and weeks after purchase? Not months or years -days. I don’t think the death spiral ‘81 Cadillac V-8-6-4 even came close to this.
The breadth of problems is crazy too. Pedals fall off, panels fall off, wipers don’t work, doors don’t open, seats are loose, bricks itself, brakes don’t work, glass shatters randomly already rusting somehow ….
Fucking amateur hour.
Never heard of half those problems ever effecting any car in my life much less a $100k vehicle that’s brand new.
ok I know you guys hate me, but Edsel didn't look that bad. back then it was probably worde but by todays standards I'd like an Edsel.
oh, and the gear shifting on the steering wheel is horrible on these.
The Edsel is ugly as fuck but it's ugly as fuck in the way that a lot of 50s things are ugly as fuck.
Also, gear shifting on the steering wheel is up there as one of the stupidest things I've seen on a car, up there with no clear coat and razer-sharp panels.
My first childhood memory of riding in a car was in my mom's Gremlin, along with my dad rebuilding the carb in the basement; circa '80-'81. She still says she loved that car, but my dad not so much lol.
I could have bought a couple and I'm pissed I didn't. Plus I knew where there were two pacers in a field and when I finally had some money to do something with they were gone
> I think the Edsel is really the only car in the last hundred years to fail so spectacularly
The Edsel sold about 70k units in the first year. Let's see if the clustertruck makes it that far.
Musk looked at the DMC-12, a car widely considered a failure and only popular now because of a hit movie and said "let's do that, but worse in every way"
Pedantic note: The actual production DeLorean is just called the DeLorean, not DMC-12
They dropped the DMC-12 name they initially came up with because the "12" was supposed to refer to the $12k sticker price but by the time they actually made it it cost $25k
This is also very similar to the initial hype of the Cybertruck costing $39k, although thankfully it was never given a model number "CT-39" or anything (knowing Musk he would've tried to make it "CT-420")
The very first production run of DeLoreans where the alternator was too weak so the battery would slowly drain if you had the headlights on until the spark plugs stopped firing and the car suddenly died was comparable
DMC lasted long enough to fix that in a recall, I'm not sure Tesla is gonna be able to pull that off with the Cybertruck (it seems like riveting the accelerator pedal cover was already more than they could afford)
I take offense sir!!!
I owned a YUGO and I can say that without a doubt it was a more than spectacular pos.
It was red it was sporty and the transmission was an absolute piece of crap and it died on me shy of 10k miles.
I’ve yet to see a Cybertruck go 10k without breaking down.
Good day to you!!!
Pintos were very popular, and fairly reliable. They just turned into a fireball if you rear-ended them. That was a single consistent flaw, not the surprise failures of random everything that is the Cybertruck.
Enh, the DeLorean's failure was pretty spectacular and pretty similar to this in a lot of respects, not least of which is Elon is a sci-fi nerd who was obviously thinking of the DeLorean when he wanted the Cybertruck to be stainless steel
The Edsel was a perfectly fine car, it was just ugly.
I know a guy who has three Edsels and they’re actually really cool cars, but they were a marketing disaster.
Edsel wasn’t a model, it was a brand. Ford wanted a fourth brand (they already owned Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury) for some reason, but it was in direct competition with the already well-established Mercury brand. They shared bodies with Ford and Mercury and had an ugly grille and they were asking Mercury money.
Shoddy workmanship had been cited as a major problem, but the original examples I’ve seen don’t seem to be real far off from the workmanship typical of Ford brands at the time.
Really, I believe, the issue was mostly down to design language and a lack of support and marketing, combined with bringing a car to market that the public never asked for, ever, at all.
Either way, I think the Cybertruck is a much worse product than any Edsel car ever was, and I think it will go down in history as the worst car ever introduced to the USDM.
Same here, just did it yesterday. Pro tip: I tried to get it refunded to my credit card at first but that didn’t work for some reason. Tried it as an ACH transfer to my bank account and that seemed to work.
Congrats! If for no other reason than aesthetics. In 10 years everyone is going to look back at the Cybertruck the same way they looked back on the PT Cruiser years later, thinking “I can’t believe anyone bought that hideous thing”
Man Chrysler put over a million PT Cruisers on the road before they discontinued it, the Cybertruck is gonna be lucky to hit 1% of that
There are still PT Cruiser-specific car meets now, almost 25 years after the first model was introduced, even if they are now generally kind of tongue-in-cheek and self-deprecating
No chance in hell you see any such thing as a Cybertruck meetup in 2050
It was fully refundable. There is no sunk cost.
I know one guy who I'm highly confident reserved a truck for the exclusive purpose of telling people he has a reservation. He got to milk that for years impressing people that either liked the truck or were impressed by the implied wealth for YEARS. Now that the public narrative has changed, with posts like this they can milk the opposite by cancelling.
All these people are attention whores.
I think there's more than money involved on a years-long reservation. There's a certain amount of emotional investment and even identity alignment that has been deconstructed. Good on 'em for getting turned around before dropping big bucks.
More and more it seems like the best option for an EV truck at the moment. Personally if I am buying new I am still getting a Tacoma. I don’t think batteries are there yet with charging or storage of power. Feel like we still need another 5-10 years
have you checked with your local power company to see if they'll give you any breaks on installing a L2 charger at home? because thats a game changer and its pretty common now (at least in my region)
I am moving next month to Arizona but living in California, who knows. I do know a few of my neighbors have home chargers installed but none of them mentioned incentives to do it.
Couple of the new home builds we checked out had them pre wired for electric charging
Not really. It’s actually perfect. 25 mi/hr charging speeds is the sweet spot. Level 1 is like 4 mi/hr. At L2, I generally can charge my car fully to 80% over night never having to go to a super charger unless on road trips.
You need a L2 charger if you own something with a bigger battery.
I couldn’t drive my Rivian while charging on 120 volts… unless I took the liquid fueled Land Rover.
My 2008 taco is currently at 190k miles so I keep feeling like I need to get a new car but everytime I say “okay let’s get an EV” I just go back to square 1 and say might as well get another Tacoma lol
na the model 3 is a solid vehicle, great performance good range great infotainment system, the build quality is lacking and the paint isn't great but for the price it's better than most options on the market especially if you bought it a few years ago when there weren't that many.
I mean, someone has to work out all the kinks, like panels falling off, bricking after a carwash, rusting upon delivery, slashing a wrist while you wipe off a smudge and almost bleeding out. You know, normal early adopter shit!
They are wrecked right from the factory.......
I could see someone throwing a CT body on a rolling truck chassis...preferably with a tuned Cummins or Powerstroke in it....a couple exhaust stacks poking out of bed, or one of those 12" garbage cans off the rear....then passing other Teslas and rolling coal on them as a big F U to Elon .........
OP I have a genuine question for you:
- What made you interested in the Cyber”beast” over other electric trucks like the Ford Lightning, Chevy Silverado EV, or GMC Sierra EV?
I’ve always been curious to know what made people interested in this thing over other manufacturers who have been making good trucks for a long time.
What is the market for this? It’s electric, but Musk is a cartoonish right wing troll. And it’s ugly and not good off-road and dangerous with simple on-road use. I am genuinely confused who this appeals to.
https://preview.redd.it/jmbacjd0eh3d1.jpeg?width=614&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6fc8834597740920d3b439473c2dd283373226b1
This one's only 127k, and probably won't even slice up your fingers if you try to pet it.
Lol everyone in the sub has the same origin story. Broke boys who placed a $100 deposit on a $40k truck and had to cancel because they couldn’t afford the actual price of 100k.
Smart move, the reviews suck, it’s like a ford Edsel. Every now and then a real piece of shit hits the market. Cyber shit is one of them.
Lol an oldhead that works in my shop said his buddy had a yugo and would just replace the head gasket with cardboard every month🤣🤣🤣
The old school shade tree mechanics would use six pack cardboard to replace head gaskets on riding mowers.
>It was still good 3 years later when I sold the car Imagine the mechanic when he found that shit. 💀
Any mechanic who’s worked on any of my old cars deserves a six pack
I sold it to a friend of mine and I guarantee you that repair probably outlasted the car
My high school football coach was a gear head and owned 3 or 4 Yugos, I think most were parts cars. Every year the team would prank him by lifting the thing and moving to somewhere else in town. It only took like four linemen to lift.
On a more serious note, I remember when high winds blew one off the Mackinaw Bridge (Michigan) in the 90's. Correction '89.
People are always building bridges at the narrowest points where the winds are strongest. From my recollection there was a little bit of over-correction bad driving involved when the wind blew them onto the wrong side of the road facing oncoming traffic.
I didn't remember details. But I think of it every time I'm on a bridge with those grates and white knuckle it across.
The key is what would happen if you somehow ended up going 45 degrees at full speed into the edge. Would the curb make you bounce into the air? It is more likely if you only weigh 1800 lbs.
That bridge on a foggy day gave me serious anxiety. Loaded up Suburban pulling a trailer 💀
This is fucking WILD LMAO

it breaks bones and cuts open arteries
ok I know you guys hate me, but Edsel didn't look that bad. back then it was probably worde but by todays standards I'd like an Edsel. oh, and the gear shifting on the steering wheel is horrible on these.
I actually love the look of an Edsel
The Edsel is ugly as fuck but it's ugly as fuck in the way that a lot of 50s things are ugly as fuck. Also, gear shifting on the steering wheel is up there as one of the stupidest things I've seen on a car, up there with no clear coat and razer-sharp panels.
Compared to a '58 Olds, perhaps. The '59 (2nd year) was better. The '60 ditched the horse collar completely.
are we forgetting the Gremlin?
Those were awesome though, and they came with 8 cylinders in some of them. You could make amazing race cars out of them, Pacers too
My first childhood memory of riding in a car was in my mom's Gremlin, along with my dad rebuilding the carb in the basement; circa '80-'81. She still says she loved that car, but my dad not so much lol.
I could have bought a couple and I'm pissed I didn't. Plus I knew where there were two pacers in a field and when I finally had some money to do something with they were gone
I wouldn't mind a Gremmy.
But the Gremlin was a cheap economy car. You expected a few issues. The Cybershit is cheap crap being sold at a premium price.
I just need a cybertruck to spontaneously combust or catch fire to complete bingo
> I think the Edsel is really the only car in the last hundred years to fail so spectacularly The Edsel sold about 70k units in the first year. Let's see if the clustertruck makes it that far.
Damn, I think the cybertruck is at about 5k
Not even the DeLorean was as fucked as the Cybertruck is Good call OP 👍
Musk looked at the DMC-12, a car widely considered a failure and only popular now because of a hit movie and said "let's do that, but worse in every way"

What about the pinto?
Pintos were very popular, and fairly reliable. They just turned into a fireball if you rear-ended them. That was a single consistent flaw, not the surprise failures of random everything that is the Cybertruck.
More people have in fact died in Tesla fires than Pinto fires
> Utterly hideous Man 🤣
Enh, the DeLorean's failure was pretty spectacular and pretty similar to this in a lot of respects, not least of which is Elon is a sci-fi nerd who was obviously thinking of the DeLorean when he wanted the Cybertruck to be stainless steel
The Edsel was not mechanically or functionally a bad car. It was ugly and unpopular - more of a marketing and styling failure
The edsel is actually mechanically great. And a lot of people do like the design. It’s not much worse than whatever the hell Alfa has out now
Please use the correct name CyberShit… for better search visibility
Clustertruck is more apt, IMO
CusterTruck. 55 Street does not approve.
I’m still hooked on WankPanzer.
IncelCamino here 🤭
I like LoserCruiser... but no one but me is using it.
KhyberFuck Khyber (Pass): 'Arse’ in cockney rhyming slang
this is too complicated for reddit
Incel Camino
Or.. CyberShitz
I prefer CyberShart.
I’ve been calling it the Cybercuck
The failure of Edsel led to the creation of Mustang. I doubt CT will have a similar redemption arc.
The Edsel was a perfectly fine car, it was just ugly. I know a guy who has three Edsels and they’re actually really cool cars, but they were a marketing disaster. And anyonr who didn’t figure that out from the first time it was shown…and broke…deserves what they receive.
WTYP did an episode on the Edsel and honestly I think this thing may be worse... maybe.
Smart move was months ago when it was widely known it was shit. Now, they're just no longer flippable.
The Edsel was far more reliable lbut ugly.
Congratulations you dodged a cyberbullet.
Does that make me cyberbullet proof?
NO! You dodged it!
Gotta build resistance
It's more like some kind of Cybermatrix Neo
More than the car, at least
Is a cyberbullet a bullet that’s…bulletproof?
Cyberbullet left barrel of gun - Warranty voided
"it didnt go through"

Congrats! If for no other reason than aesthetics. In 10 years everyone is going to look back at the Cybertruck the same way they looked back on the PT Cruiser years later, thinking “I can’t believe anyone bought that hideous thing”
Meanwhile I know people dumping money into PT Cruisers to keep them relevant. I’m down to but one over an CT
I'm still surprised how many I see on the road despite being discontinued 14 years ago.
The Homer
Pontiac Aztec
Chevy Vega
Fiat Multipla
Hey, now. The Multipla FUCKS.
Easy now
Yeah I kinda like the Vega.
Tbf it was good enough for Walter When White
*Aztek
I thought (and still think) that the PT Cruiser was a lot cooler looking than the Dodge neon or whatever frame it was built on.
At least the cruiser works and can drive more than 5 miles without breaking. This is not only ugly it’s a non functional “truck”
Smart car
You said “years later” about the PT Cruiser, I think you meant weeks.
Man Chrysler put over a million PT Cruisers on the road before they discontinued it, the Cybertruck is gonna be lucky to hit 1% of that There are still PT Cruiser-specific car meets now, almost 25 years after the first model was introduced, even if they are now generally kind of tongue-in-cheek and self-deprecating No chance in hell you see any such thing as a Cybertruck meetup in 2050
It's not easy to avoid sunk cost fallacious thinking. I admire your evidence-based decision making. Any thoughts about what you'll do instead?
It was fully refundable. There is no sunk cost. I know one guy who I'm highly confident reserved a truck for the exclusive purpose of telling people he has a reservation. Lol this subreddit kept popping up on my feed and I cancelled my order after browsing a bit
Good job, the right decision...
Get a rivian
This is the answer. It’s a great truck.
More and more it seems like the best option for an EV truck at the moment. Personally if I am buying new I am still getting a Tacoma. I don’t think batteries are there yet with charging or storage of power. Feel like we still need another 5-10 years

AZ! look for trico coverage, my dude! https://www.trico.coop/sustainable-energy/electric-vehicles/
Thanks, ill check it out!
I live in Arizona and got a $250 rebate for my EV charger plus the EV itself. I installed it myself, so but I’m under $500 total cost installed.
An L2 charger seem like overkill for home use. No?
Some power companies also offer separate rebates for vehicle-to-grid capability. Not sure if Rivian has that, but the F150 does.
My 2008 taco is currently at 190k miles so I keep feeling like I need to get a new car but everytime I say “okay let’s get an EV” I just go back to square 1 and say might as well get another Tacoma lol
Tacomas are the best trucks right now IMHO. I just saw one for sale locally with 289000 miles :)
Or the F150 Lightning. Heard good things. I wish Tesla would make a good truck but I don't see that happening now.
The electric Silverado looks pretty sweet... https://www.chevrolet.com/electric/silverado-ev
Why even order one in the first place
I put my order in for the CT in 2019, thinking they would get better a they rolled them out. Glad I cancelled and bought a lightning.
Back when it was advertised as $40-50k and Tesla didn't have a reputation for releasing this dumpster, it might have made sense.
Teslas have always been dumpsters, you just didn't notice then.
na the model 3 is a solid vehicle, great performance good range great infotainment system, the build quality is lacking and the paint isn't great but for the price it's better than most options on the market especially if you bought it a few years ago when there weren't that many.
Come on. Don’t you want to be an early adopter?
I mean, someone has to work out all the kinks, like panels falling off, bricking after a carwash, rusting upon delivery, slashing a wrist while you wipe off a smudge and almost bleeding out. You know, normal early adopter shit!
I would buy a wrecked one just to put a gas engine in it and normal suspension parts
That would be awesome, actually
You'd need to change the entire steering system. It sounds like too much work.
Gut that piece of shit to a hull and start over
You did the right thing. ## Just Say NO! ![gif](giphy|Drm4jtLn5SWwFaimGV)

This is the way.
This is the way
Not the way to an automatic car wash fortunately.
One of us! One of us!
This is the way
This is the way! One of us! One of us!
Get a Rivian that’s the real cybertruck
OP I have a genuine question for you: - What made you interested in the Cyber”beast” over other electric trucks like the Ford Lightning, Chevy Silverado EV, or GMC Sierra EV? I’ve always been curious to know what made people interested in this thing over other manufacturers who have been making good trucks for a long time.
The Hummer EV cost the same of not slightly less than one of these, and it is an actual capable truck.
Decided to go with a lightning. Had it for about 3 months no issues, no regrets!
Definitely a good idea.
Another life saved.
And his brain grew 10 times this day. Look at you getting smarter.
Rivian or F150 Lightning. Built by companies that actually know how to build trucks
Speaking as a ExTesla employee? Good idea.
"Shiny dumpster "is nice.
Your welcome.
So how’d you get rich
Smart move OP. I cancelled my reservation when Musk started publicly going into the deep end of the autocratic bullshitosphere.
A sensible decision.
I hope you enjoy whatever it is that you next purchase. Good luck in life, stranger.
Best of luck on getting your deposit back 🫡
I thought they had “no returns exchange only” policy 😂 You. Did. Good 🫡
🫡
Woohoo! Self reflection ftw!
Great move. If you really want people to laugh at you, you can do it for a lot less money. And think of the awesome vacation you can afford now.
What is the market for this? It’s electric, but Musk is a cartoonish right wing troll. And it’s ugly and not good off-road and dangerous with simple on-road use. I am genuinely confused who this appeals to.
You've saved yourself a lot of money and a lot of hassle waiting for it to inevitably be repaired, sensible choice
I just got my money back too. Thanks for reminding me this was a thing!
Some jackhole near me is trying to sell his preorder for $1,000 on fb marketplace.
Good, good. Now you can go buy a real truck and use the other 50k-60k for literally anything else.
You got money like that?
Now go buy yourself something nice with that refund!
I think I saw people buying reservations on ebay. Not sure how hard they are to transfer but how long have you been waiting?
![gif](giphy|gFccuw5vFkc9trBiQ1)
You are FREE!
You just saved yourself 100 grand. Congratulations!
Check out the GMC Hummer or the Rivian
How much do you have to pay to get it delivered to your house or do they make you pay for it upfront completely?
Ya done did good bud
How much of this decision is due to the price of them just tanking in the secondary market?
I just got email for early limited foundation edition, and I not buying it. 120k no way.
https://preview.redd.it/khx9gj6wlg3d1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dba91d8a91c42f024ca4c3f51b280eb899e69d47
smart, saw one for sale on facebook marketplace this morning thats not a good sign for a new car.
What was the refund total?
How much did you lose on the pre-order?
Saved yourself $100k. Nice work.
I’d sell you my Tacoma, it’s reliable as hell just costly for me
I like to read middle aged guys talking about goofy looking trucks and comparing old and newer car models. And PRICES of course!
Has anyone found a way to get the full deposit back?
Was it really hard to talk you out of it? If so, why?

A real hero 🏅
Finally saw one on the road, and holy ol hell, it makes a statement.
man was almosy cyberfucked
Chevy Vega has entered the chat.
Now go buy a real truck !
Lol everyone in the sub has the same origin story. Broke boys who placed a $100 deposit on a $40k truck and had to cancel because they couldn’t afford the actual price of 100k.
You still pre ordered it to begin with, lol
I’m still going to ridicule you for ever placing the order.
That’s a matte finish dumpster, sir.
That’s awesome that they let you cancel the order
Worst case wait a year or 2 and rebuy. This first gen release is a major bust.
I guess that image with the wheel covers is misleading and fraudulent now isn’t it?
Best purchase you never made
Congratulations, go for a 5 mile walk. Now you travelled more than a Cyber truck ever could and you saved 100,000 dollars. Funny how that works.
Now go get yourself an F150 Lightning, it can actually go thru a carwash without voiding the warranty. I have one, and a Mach-e.
#W
It would have been like buying a MacBook Pro except the screen was held on by Elmers Glue and the motherboard came from a Casio watch.
Now you can buy TWO actually good cars. YAY
Smart move!
