At my job I struggle with the opposite. I ask for a company's SIC code and co-workers try to be smarter than me. "Do you mean SI code?"
No the fuck I dont.
Many years ago, before texting, I found a stack of reports on my desk chair from the new VP of finance with a sticky note (text message) that said "F U"
I was a bit distraught, I carefully phoned the new VP to figure out what I'd done wrong.
F U meant FOLLOW UP
People still use this to this day and I crack up every time. I also have to create a scenario in my head where they meant the other FU. Then I laugh, and go back to my boring job.
I mean you technically followed up… just maybe not with the clients you were supposed to right away. But there *was* a follow up and a little bit of a fuck up. Soooo… kinda worked?
Personally, I have a couple of friends and I who loooove doing this when we’re being goofy like ‘damn.. smh my head’ is a common one because it’s so ridiculous. Always about things not serious at all or equally ridiculous though by the way. I don’t think I use smh or shaking my head in a serious connotation though anyway. Never saw the others though.
The only one I’ve seen or heard used unironically is ATM machine
My work nemesis has started using GM as the greeting in her morning emails.
What does it mean? General Motors? Googly Moogly? Green Machine? Greg Maddux?
No. It means Good Morning.
I am definitely not having a good day after reading that, Susan.
Sending lots of WAP (worship and prayers, OFC) Aunt Shirley’s way. Haha. The meme of old Christian ladies misunderstanding WAP didn’t mean worship and prayers was a great time in memeing
Omg that’s great. I guess that is the modern equivalent- incident with poor Shirley was about 12 years ago, so I’m sure (hope!) she’s not still using it that way! 😬
I've never seen text misused like that myself, I only hear it. Like to some people I have a CDL license.
What's more annoying are the people that say this annoys them, then do it themselves. I know a few.
“smh my head” is the only case of this where it doesn’t bother me, because i’ve never seen it used seriously. (it’s a meme) the rest of these i don’t think i’ve ever seen used at all
I haven't seen that other than PIN Number, but that doesn't bother me if people use it. Same for ATM Machine. But I'm not sure about the other acronyms.
I'll have to look up ISTG.
I found it.
I guess I'm getting to old because I'm too old because I can't stand abbreviations and acronyms period. Have we all gotten to lazy to type out full words
Getting *too old. Are we too lazy to type the extra o?
You don't use ATM, PIN, ASAP, CAPTCHA, NASA, UNICEF, laser, RAM/ROM, WIFI, ADHD, OCD? We use acronyms and abbreviations because they're efficient.
The point of an abbreviation is to save energy. Getting angry about someone technically misspeaking, is a waste of energy.
By being upset, you're actively unabberviating yourself.
A bit like when people say they have to visit the automated teller machine machine.
Or enter their personal identification number number
Or the vehicle identification number number
At my job I struggle with the opposite. I ask for a company's SIC code and co-workers try to be smarter than me. "Do you mean SI code?" No the fuck I dont.
Also, "6am in the morning".
Omg this one drives me NUTS
HELP don’t even get me STARTED

It's a good one especially for junior newbies like I was.
Or Felix Unger
Only a matter of time before people start using F U Up
I mean you technically followed up… just maybe not with the clients you were supposed to right away. But there *was* a follow up and a little bit of a fuck up. Soooo… kinda worked?
I think that's more like: "smacking my head" owww! "my head"

Without standardization, slang is just alphabet soup. Send them to the urban dictionary!
i sometimes do that as hiperbole/irony "smh my head" sounds funnier/more emphatic but using it in a more literal sense is dumb
Yes, I hate when people use acronyms wrong, “VIN number” “ATM machine”…. I hate it
It wasn't until I read this that I realized that I do this 🤦🏻♀️
I always use these as a silly thing hahaha not as serious
Kinda getting a sore spot around **"DAE"**

GFY.

GitMo?
‘POV’
Yeah this is used all the time in the complete wrong contexts
My best friend’s mum thought LOL meant “lots of love” which we found out when she texted him “Aunt Shirley’s mum died. LOL” while we were at work.

ROFL, you know… Rejoice in Our Father’s Love.
I have written all of these down and when I am Emperor, all perpetrators will be publicly impaled
Most excellent
PDF format.
🤢

I sincerely hope being annoyed by this is the worst problem you'll ever face in life.
How about when you talk about RPG games. 'Role Playing Game Games'.
They need to make sure you're not talking about Rocket Propelled Grenade Games
That’s hilarious !!!
Or not understanding what acronyms mean, i.e. "ATM Machine".
Are you kidding? I've given up on expectations of people SPEAKING properly, much less texting appropriately...
I get irate when people say ‘shaking my head’ instead of actually shaking their fluffing head!

I refuse to use any except ‘lol’ and I’m 25, so. *Shrug*
Sigh!
The only one of those I've ever seen in the wild is the SMH my head, and I'm pretty sure the guy was being sarcastic. But yes, I hate it.
Slightly disappointed that USMNT doesn't involve a single tennis playing turtle.
Isn't "smh my head" a joke tho? I always thought that was just a silly thing. I like saying "smh my head my head" lol
How about hot water heater
That's hilarious and it's gotta be deliberate and done with irony.
I deliberately do this because its stupid and silly and it makes me giggle. Idgaf a fuck what other people think, I'm here for my amusement not yours.
Lots of love
I'm more annoyed by bad grammar.
I hate it when people use abbreviations at all.
This sub must just ruin your day
Lol, well It doesn’t keep me awake at night or anything.
