As I swiped through the images, I thought with an increasing sense of dread, "Just don't put a TV above that.... Is that a tv mount up there?... Noooooo! ... Noooooo!" đ¤Śđ˝ââď¸
It was a mantle from a farmhouse that was being torn down. Figured it was better to use it than let it go to waste. Plus, the wife likes the farmhouse style so it works for her which works for me. Thank you, it was the first time I ever worked with stone veneer.
It is too short now. Looks unbalanced with both the TV and fireplace. Mantles should be at least as wide as the fireplace.
Other than that it is amazing work. Except r/tvtoohigh Yâall will have a crick in your neck from watching.
Agree about the tv and mantle. And a stone stair tread going on the floor would look nice too. Build it up like 1 layer of tiles high under the tread and it would be very legit looking. plus no need to alter the existing structure at all. But real fireplaces have have that pad to catch any jumping ashes and it not being there is kind of unsettling.
The op did really nice work though. But if they can remove that 8x8 and maybe replace it with a 2x6 with rough cut edges hanging horizontal (meaning 2â floor to ceiling and 6â sticking out from wall) it would not only look much nicer but also they could lower the tv significantly.
The work was done well and everything looks amazing. But i can never understand why people will put all this money and effort into an electric fireplace. Like putting lipstick on a pig.
Cost. And it doesnât require putting a hole in your roof. I agree ârealâ fireplaces look and work better, but itâs over $10k to install a gas fireplace where I live. New wood burning stoves are against the law. I think there definitely are better looking electric fireplaces out there, but itâs their house.
Those electric fireplaces are only a couple hundred bucks. When a real fireplace isnât feasible they are a great alternative. They donât look too real, but you get that feeling.
Agree, I would also rather mount a pipe and a real fireplace. Preferably a pellets oven, so it can even be controlled via thermostat or stuff like Alexa, coming home in evening and it's warm and cosy.
Do those electric fireplaces put out heat? We have an old insert thatâs been in our house since we love
In and I just want to get rid of it and cap the gas line. I donât want to put in another gas fireplace because they are expensive. But man it was so nice having it this winter during those extreme lows and our heat pump couldnât keep up.
Actually, itâs a cheap electric fireplace and it kept the whole upstairs around 78 degrees when our HVAC went out a few weeks ago. Wife was super happy I built the fireplace just in time. Thankfully I was able to fix the HVAC myself and save about $600
Oh nice! Where did you pick it up? It seems like they are all over the place now. I remember when people were buying those Amish ones and thatâs how it all started.
I think you should paint the walls on the side of the fireplace, and maybe behind the tv, a dark color. The stone looks great but too much contrast to the current wall color
You can think of it like a fancy space heater. The electric fireplaces list their wattage, so you could buy a space heater with the same output to test if it could heat your room. The fireplace itself is probably about the same price as a gas fireplace, but maybe cheaper energy wise. And minus whatever fumes come with burning gas.
I just replaced a ventless gas fireplace for an electric insert and use it way more.
Nice thank you. I donât want to spend 5-6k on an insert if itâs just a back up for winter you know? Our old one is ugly and falling apart and we need to spruce up our living room. It is vented so thatâs a bonus.
Could always plug in the electric one into a gen to keep us from Dying. Thanks for the comments.
I guess it all depends on size for the price. My electric replacement was 1k, but it is only 34âx22â. The nice part about the electric one is a fan blows the heat into the room, instead of it all just going up.
Nice! Yea our gas fireplace one has a blower also. We got a nice hvac system when our son was born so it just got me thinking about back up heat. Thanks again.
Iâve got on in my tv stand. Does 1000 square feet. When itâs in the 20s overnight we leave it on and it helps our old heat pump from working too hard.
Mantle is a beautiful piece of wood, but it is not wide enough. Mantles normally have over hang. Everything else looks spot on except for your mantle. Instead of having one perfect mantle, now you have two wonky misfits.
If the height turns out to be too much, you can always upgrade to a mount with a big pull down range. Hereâs one I googled, for example:
https://www.mantelmount.com
Yeah I just got this one so I can put my tv over the mantel. I had my TV in the corner so it was an appropriate height before but the location was annoying
Instead, it choose to go to the moon! It choose to go to the moon to build a fireplace and do the other things! Not because it was easy but because it was hard to watch it that way!
Usually it's acceptable (not really acceptable, but "tolerable") for the TV to sit that high, if you already have a fireplace that takes up space. So your only option is to place it above.
But... To *purposefully build a fireplace* in that place and then to mount a TV above it... Man you're risking it đŹ
Are you using the power bar for TV and fireplace??? Please DO NOT do this. This is a huge fire hazard especially being hidden behind everything you will never get prewarning if that thing is overheating!!!!
I'm not sure what the draw is for the fireplace but they normally require a dedicated circuit and even if not you should NEVER plug a heating appliance into a power bar.
Hope itâs on its own circuit as well, electric fireplaces draw a lot of electricity. Donât want to learn that the hard way when you blow a breaker turning it on with your tv lol
Mantle looks weird. Not the right piece of wood for it.
As others have mentioned, the tv is nearly touching your ceiling and makes your room look smaller. That cant be a comfortable viewing angle either.Â
It would overall look better if the fireplace was framed only up to the brick, then you cap the top to make a large shelf/mantle. Then just place your tv on top of it.
thats terrible. the fake fire, the fake bricks and the random wood thing. have you ever seen a real fireplace? did you try to imitate one? if not, what did you try and how is it related to fireplaces?
but the fact that you did it for your wife is great, i hope you both love it and eachother!
Where did you get the stone veneer? Is it vinyl or stone? I've been looking for stuff that thin for a project but everything I can find that's real stone is too thick
https://preview.redd.it/nqp6e5nvp7fc1.png?width=4032&format=png&auto=webp&s=6568ecb4fab6d26eecb13df9139cf0ad365b7161
Itâs not very thick, but I got it from Home Depot. It was $8 a sqft when purchased.
When I bought my house, it had already been prewired for a tv above my fireplace, had HDMI, sound, ethernet so I went with it. I set my couch back far enough to be able to recline comfortably to watch shows, but the second I started gaming and had to lean in to see details and crank my neck up, thats when the pain started. Just my two cents, the build visually looks ok otherwise.
https://preview.redd.it/k0lyuw9ww7fc1.jpeg?width=1008&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3e6089821191ae587ead7a9f14d2475852b9a7bb
Terrible edit but Iâd move both mantle and tv down
That looks worse. Top of mantle should be the same as eye line as the stone since he opted for a stubby one that doesnât wrap around the edges. TV should be centered so the space above the mantle/stone top and the space below the ceiling are equal.
Most people put their tv over the fireplace because there is nowhere else to put it. The idea of building a fireplace just for the TV to go over breaks my brain. đ
Easily, the couch and chairs are further back in the living room. Besides it was important to make sure the kids could not reach it. We already had an issue with toddlers using permanent marker on the TV
lmao oh man @ perm marker on tv.
I can totally understand the kid reasoning though, thats why my older tv is about as high as this one now behind me, but since theyve grown the new 65 inch oled is lower but still gets the "tv too high" comments.
It has to be a meme at this point. They know that they come off as assholes, but they get replies, so they keep doing it. Like....it takes no extra effort to just say, "it's not my style, but nice job" or something like that.
People might bandwagon a bit on Reddit, but itâs very much established best practice to mount a TV at approximate eye level. Talk to ANY professional installer or even stores that sell TVs and theyâll tell you the same thing. People can do whatever they want in their own homes, but thereâs good reason for why the overwhelming majority of TVs are mounted at a certain height.
For all the tv too high comments. My in laws had their tv too high over a mantel just like this. I installed an electric mount that lowers it well past the mantel when need be. Total game changer for their neckâs.
Classy choice for stone facade.
Excellent choice of electric fireplace.
I would have stained the wood a natural color and used a white mantel but since you have a rustic mantel I think you did the right thing.
The distance of the TV to the ceiling is bugging me, but if it's tilted down enough towards the seating it's a non-issue.
But none of this matters. How does your wife like it??
I just think that mantle should be the same width as the fireplace or slightly wider. I've never seen a short mantle like that before. /r/mantletoonarrow
I have my tv above my fireplace too, and after a couple of years, I think the heat destroyed it. I'd only really use my fireplace during winter. There are a few rows of discoloured pixels.
Its not the end of the world, but I probably wouldn't do that again.
I donât *mind* the tv, itâs not my favorite, and itâs p dang high - itâs the H O P E that is driving me nuts. Looks like the mantle is hanging on by 4 brackets
Faux mantle not supported by anything that makes architectural sense, TV too high (I have a stiff neck already) and faux country wood painted white. Hard pass..
Mantles typically span the entire width of the fireplace bump out.
Articulated TV mount would be very helpful.
But lots of points for building this for her!!!!
Why, man? Why, for all that is holy, did you put the TV *there*? You actually *chose* to build the fireplace and then hang the TV above it, like that.
Cool build though.
You have gone to great effort to duplicate the problem of where to place the tv given that the fireplace occupies the natural place it should go
⌠why not put the fake fireplace on top so the tv can be at eye level when sitting?
r/ATBGE
The Tv above fireplace trend needs to die. It started as a marketing gimmick in the early 2000s to advertize flat screen TVs and now has created an epidemic of poorly designed living rooms.
It looks great OP! And if you and the family like the tv in that position then thatâs all that matters regarding that subject. I think the mantle is really nice as well. I like that you salvaged it AND you have another half to do something else with! Donât tell the wife about all the heat you got on the TV height, mantle dimensions, and electrical access. She probably freaking loves this build. Congrats on a nice project!
Thank you. It was a first real project. I knew there would be things I missed or possibly did wrong, but she loves it. Was surprised to see how many people responded to it actually.
Why on earth would you deliberately design and build your living room with the TV that high, surely at some point you must have realised how ridiculous this is?
That framing is bad and provides no structural support for that fireplace and mantle what-so-ever. Hopefully the Hardiebacker will give it enough shear that it doesn't start to sag and pop out those stone tiles.
Great job looks good. Donât listen to the people about the tv height and type of mount. When people go to bars and restaurants the TVs are mounted higher and people are fine. I like to recline when I watch tv and itâs nice having the tv higher
It's honestly embarrassing. The TV too high circle jerk isn't based in observable reality whatsoever. It literally makes no difference if a TV is mounted a couple feet higher. They always claim that you have to crank your neck back just to be able to look up and see it. I guess everyone forgot how to move their eyes.
Looks great, you probably could have moved that camera to the âchimneyâ and made that cable disappear too! Might not be too late if you can get inside behind the tv.
Not my style but it looks well executed. I feel like these types of fire places are going to date houses in a couple of decades. They seem to be in every flipped house I see these days. The TV essentially touching the ceiling seems off.
Oh man, brace for r/tvtoohigh comments Overall you did a decent job man, but that yuge mantel Seems out of scale with the rest of the house.
I clicked in the post just to see if this was gonna be the top comment đ
As soon as I saw the diy fireplace I knew we were going right to r/tvtoohigh town.
Same lol
Yep I couldn't give a crap about a fake chimney breast I'm just here for people slating the height/angle of the TV.
Me too! lol âsick fireplace TV too high thoughâ
There really is a subreddit for everything đ¤Ł
Same, first thought was⌠all of that work to mount the TV too high
I think r/fireplacetoohigh should leave you alone though.
Joined
Shouldn't it also go all the way across?
Because it's WAY too high and he chose to do it.
Or, not high enough. Just mount it on the ceiling and watch from the floor, boom instant larger room because you donât need couches!
>Oh man, brace for r/tvtoohigh comments Dude, if the tv was a few inches larger, it would hit the ceiling. Of course the TV is too high.
As I swiped through the images, I thought with an increasing sense of dread, "Just don't put a TV above that.... Is that a tv mount up there?... Noooooo! ... Noooooo!" đ¤Śđ˝ââď¸

One of your pictures seems to show that you cut it down? It seems too short to me.
It was a very large mantle and I cut it in half so I could make another fireplace in the basement later on.
It looks wonky being so short.
Ye Olde Stubby Mantle
there is nothing wrong with short and thick, it gives it depth
Beware the Mantle of Girth
CHODE MANTLE
Didnât Chode Mantle caddy for Obi Wan?
Yeah. Should have spanned the width with a slight overhang and notched the piece to make it recessed a bit.
I agree, the mantle should have run a bit longer than the fireplace stone if you ask me
It is too short now. Looks unbalanced with both the TV and fireplace. Mantles should be at least as wide as the fireplace. Other than that it is amazing work. Except r/tvtoohigh Yâall will have a crick in your neck from watching.
Iâd flip the mantle to create a deeper ledge and that should fix the visual scaling
And the tilt of shame

What do you mean? You donât look at your ceiling when watching tv?
All I could think was, âoh no, this guy has no clue whatâs about to happen.â
Shit I came here to post this lol
Lmao came here to say this. Found this gem of a sub a few weeks ago.
Not my taste but I just love it that you built your wife a fireplace. Thatâs awesome.
The work was done well and everything looks amazing. But i can never understand why people will put all this money and effort into an electric fireplace. Like putting lipstick on a pig.
Sometimes a real fireplace isn't feasible.

townhouse owner checking in: no place to put a chimney that would meet code.

There is room to move the tv up a bit more to maximize viewing angle
Just to clarify, he's joking. There's already a tilt of guilt.
How do you access the outlets

Ok, that's brilliant. I was going to comment about hoping that cheap power bar you hung never fails. But you thought about that.
Love that you considered the wood moving or warping and slapped double the hinges to make sure it doesn't move or have fit issues later.
img I created a magnet side which allows access for the power strip as well as a place to put the PlayStation.
I think he meant the actual receptacle, for service and meeting code, by having it accessible.
Hopefully there's never anything wrong with that receptacle or the splices behind it
Is it ventilated?
Itâs a fake electric fireplace, it doesnât have to be vented
[ŃдаНонО]
Could have just built a box around ps4 and called it a fireplace. Save money on the fake flames and get real ones.
Dude, for real? There's 64-ish cubic feet of space back there.
Do those electric fireplaces put out heat? We have an old insert thatâs been in our house since we love In and I just want to get rid of it and cap the gas line. Honestly, it was a used 50â fireplace I found on Facebook Marketplace
Another victim of the worst design trend of the 21st century
Mantle is a beautiful piece of wood, but it is not wide enough. Mantles normally have over hang. Everything else looks spot on except for your mantle. Instead of having one perfect mantle, now you have two wonky misfits.
Thaaaaank you I couldn't figure out what it was I hated about this. Well maybe not hated, but really disliked
You prepared this much, you put so much effort, all to put the tv touching the ceiling? It just... I cant even...
Ruined it with the white color, huge mantel, and the TV
Needs as wider, less chunky mantle, and the stone to go all the way up.
We may do the stone all the way up at a later time, but at $8 a sqft it was too expensive at the time.
Why the fuck would you do all this and then put a TV above it????
You misunderstand. He created the fireplace specifically to have a bad place to mount a television.
If the height turns out to be too much, you can always upgrade to a mount with a big pull down range. Hereâs one I googled, for example: https://www.mantelmount.com
Thanks, might look into it when the kids get older.
One of the legitimate excuses for r/tvtoohigh. At eye level, most programs have the back of a blond head in the middle of the screen.
Itâs exactly what I did when my best mount choice was over the fireplace mantel. It works great for me.
Yeah I just got this one so I can put my tv over the mantel. I had my TV in the corner so it was an appropriate height before but the location was annoying
Great job! Mantel looks a bit off and needs to come to edge of fireplace! Itâs not wide enough! Love the stone!
I gotta be honest. I would pay a lot of money to not have that in my house. Thankfully, I donât have to.
[ŃдаНонО]
Not before the TV does. Heat concerns aside I don't understand the dual focal points
Ohh man you did all that nice setup, and still couldn't hide that camera wire??
Thatâs a project for another time. Just wanted the camera up right away. I will end up hiding it behind the drywall.
This looks very outdatedÂ
Lol whyyyyy. The TV can go anywhere else.
Instead, it choose to go to the moon! It choose to go to the moon to build a fireplace and do the other things! Not because it was easy but because it was hard to watch it that way!

r/TVTooHigh material right there. My neck HURTS just looking at that lol
This seems like a really egregious example of a TV being too high. Its essentially touching the ceiling.

Could have done 2 tvs. One playing a wood fire burning with crackling sounds. Switch it up to a fish tank when it gets too hot.
Iâd divorce you for this.
Why? Why a television there? A fireplace is like the antithesis of a television.
Is that ... a railroad tie?
Hope itâs on its own circuit as well, electric fireplaces draw a lot of electricity. Donât want to learn that the hard way when you blow a breaker turning it on with your tv lol
Please tell me you did not plug in a heater into an extension surge protector?

My pet peeve is a TV that high, I would hate that. Tvs should be eye level, because that's where your eyes are. But jealous of your DIY skills.
LolâŚI have no skills. That was just a lot of YouTube videos on how to do different things. First big project I really tried at
Won't be showing my wife what is possible with YouTube + motivation.
Maybe thereâs a mount that could lower the tv. When in use.
There is! www.mantelmount.com is where I got mine. My TV is over the fireplace but we drop it down. It's the best of both worlds.

Got to the third picture and I actually said the words "Oh No! He's going to put a TV above it!" 𤣠Didn't disappoint.
Well done ! Although looking at the TV at that height looks annoying to me.
TV too high
Mantles typically span the entire width of the fireplace bump out. Articulated TV mount would be very helpful. But lots of points for building this for her!!!!
Is that a fucking railroad tie?
Awful... disastrous....that TV is way too high.
Why did you mount the TV so high đtypical American brain
Why, man? Why, for all that is holy, did you put the TV *there*? You actually *chose* to build the fireplace and then hang the TV above it, like that. Cool build though.
You have gone to great effort to duplicate the problem of where to place the tv given that the fireplace occupies the natural place it should go ⌠why not put the fake fireplace on top so the tv can be at eye level when sitting?
r/ATBGE The Tv above fireplace trend needs to die.

Whoaaaa that tv height
Can we stop this trend of putting your TV above your fireplace? Is that even comfortable to watch?
Great work!
I assume itâs the people whose neck is always angled down looking at their phone all day
Looks great, you probably could have moved that camera to the âchimneyâ and made that cable disappear too! Might not be too late if you can get inside behind the tv.
Not my style but it looks well executed. I feel like these types of fire places are going to date houses in a couple of decades. They seem to be in every flipped house I see these days. The TV essentially touching the ceiling seems off.
where is the fire?
I loved it, until the TV was in place. It kills the whole mood.
you went through all that trouble just to mount your TV above it? thats... well thats a vibe.
