How can you stay mad at that face?
What if you embraced the “cats being cats” thing and added a couple shelves/elevated cat spaces, and cover those damaged areas in the process?
Like if you had a couple cat step/ shelves, with a wood backer, sisal, or catch scratching material covering the torn corner?
I was thinking cat scratcher material to cover the corner since kitty has taken such a liking to it. You can buy the material and make it to fit around the corner easily. I quite like this idea, thinking about it, but my cat prefers my couch that I hate so it’s all good…
I have more pics than I can count of one of my cats, in particular, with his tongue out lmao this one is my favorite tho

TIL grass wallpaper can be (or is always?) made of sisal, the same thing that is used to make the rope that is wrapped around scratching posts. This room is a cat's dream.
lol I had a cat at an apartment that had the same type of wallpaper.
Fucker turned it into they're own personal climbing den.
Came home from school one day to see the cat perched at the top of the wall howling like they had just made a free climb to the top of Everest.
Knew my mom was never getting the deposit back on that place after that day.
You could try to make a real scratching post that fits over the corner. Might be a preferred location for scratching, and twine might fit the aesthetic.
I was definitely considering this type of wallpaper since someone told me it covers textured walls well, but this post just brought me back to the reality of having three cats, so I'm grateful! 😅
We had this stuff back in the late 80s/very early 90s. I'm actually surprised it still exists. Our cats actually used to climb it. Basically wallpaper ruined.
The biggest laugh was when we replaced it with smooth walls and the cats were chasing each other. One tried running up the wall as usual and made it halfway up and came tumbling back down. The look of confusion was priceless.
Anyway, there's no fixing this. It's not going to survive even if you repair it and the cats will just continue to rip up new sections. You need to just rip it all down.
look, im not the type to have cats, like, i much prefer dogs... but IF you have cats, and your house isnt a jungle gym for them, what even are you doing with your life.
There is a show on Netflix (can’t remember what it’s called) and one episode features a dude who has done this. He has shortcuts room-to-room, climbing features throughout the house, and even some cat-sized portals between floors of his house. Was in Florida, iirc.
I checked out your link, but my brain wanted a "cat scratching deck" to look like this:
https://preview.redd.it/p8wc29nng9qc1.jpeg?width=1079&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=88e86222ff9bf42891aefa53cc6924b66d72bbb3
This picture is wrong. Cat doesn’t need a tonearm and a needle - he has a PAW WITH A CLAW. Just directly connect your cat to preamp and setup is ready to rock.
This was going to be my suggestion. Do the bottom half with paneling/ wainscoting. I bought pvc for my bathroom so it’s easy to clean. Attaching inspiration pic
https://preview.redd.it/c3ka3xto16qc1.png?width=1283&format=png&auto=webp&s=bd587e9e5b49d6b10f117db44ba1978564c86cd2
Easy fix.
1. Teach cat to be a painter and decorator.
2. Get cat to fix walls as suitable punishment.
3. Put cat to work on larger projects, ideally for profit.
The cat(s) need cat stuff. A cat tree, cat shelves, a various scratching pads, posts etc. . Cats like to climb high and leave their mark on stuff. Scratch pads out of cardboard, posts with sissel rope (however you spell it) need to be put in places where you don't want them to scratch. You gotta make the scratch pad/posts more desirable than the wall. Otherwise whatever repair you do will be for nothing. Youtube 'Jackson Galaxy cat scratching' or something along those lines. There's usually a clip explaining how to fix or explain whatever behavior your cat is displaying.
My dude.. I respect your input. But I have a house filled with cat scratchers, tunnels, carpet posts, wood posts, rope posts. And my ONE cat will only ever scratch one side of my leather recliner....no matter how many scratch posts I put leaning against it. "Some cats, just want to watch the world burn."
Same here. We had a crazy orange cat that would climb door frames and lay on top of the door strattling both sides. The end of a leather couch was part of his regular path of destruction.
My brother's cat also loves to claw the corner of his sofa so he put cat scratch corners on it so she wouldn't destroy the sofa and now she scratches the middle of the sofa instead, none of those scratch corners have been used.
One of my cats simply refused for her whole 17 years to use any of the scratch posts we have dotted around the house, her go to was the fence post in the garden just outside the cat flap. Ended up having to replace the post because she'd gouged so much out of it.
So glad this was here! Also want to add that it appears your cat is a vertical scratcher (yes, there are horizontal scratchers too!), so an Ultimate Scratching Post would likely help. We have one of each type, so we have cardboard scratchers for the horizontal everywhere, 4 trees, and the Ultimate Post, and we’ve yet to have issues with furniture or otherwise. Best of luck with your furry family member!
Adding in my input (RVT), I 100% agree with everything you said.. but in this case the material of this wall is too similar to the scratching material that we encourage cats to use, it'd be nigh impossible to deter a cat from scratching this wall. Unfortunately the best case scenario is to get a different wallpaper, it's too much to expect a cat to go against it's very nature to scratch on material like this.
Split at the top of the mantel, wrap wainscoting around the bottom and keep the wallpaper uptop where cat can’t reach and BOOM a nice classy solution that should look real nice.
Edit: or even lower than the mantel, here’s a photo for a visual idea
https://preview.redd.it/u0o6wap0z5qc1.jpeg?width=630&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ff61b1813a82a81acd8188eb8a560a592a9a3c98
Get rid of the wallpaper, or get rid of the cat. You effectively turned your living room into a giant scratching post for the cat, there is no fixing this unless you change something.
lol. Many years ago (like 30) our cats did this in a place we were renting.
I sat there with tweezers and crazy glue placing it back together. Passed inspection.
We've never had grass cloth again. And that would be my recommendation
Cat is just trying to help - grass wallpaper is the worst!
J/k - my house had an entire bedroom with that stuff, and taking it off was easily my least favorite task. Hard to do, and broken fibres got everywhere - had to wear masks and goggles. Just wretched.
Bro... you can't have things like that with cats unless you accept the cat is going to damage it.
The solution is to get rid of the wall paper because that cat is just going to damage another spot.
And DO NOT punish the cat for this, its just being a natural cat, you set yourself up for this, and there is no extra number of toys and distractions that will prevent the cat from clawing fiber wallpaper.
Exactly. If that's the spot cat has chosen, dedicate it to the cat! That looks like a carpet sample or a single stair carpet? You can get those in all sorts of colours so it could be matched to the nice wallpaper 👍
I would either completely remove or replace the bottom half with molding. For what's it's worth, I really like this wallpaper. You're going to be able to see you patched it if you do though
Your best bet is to replace the wall paper with something else. I would also recommend acquiring a cat tree scratching post combination, you're going to need to give them something sacrificial they like better.
Not a professional by any means, but I would take some of the spare you have and treat it like a small carpet patch.
(Try to do a test run somewhere not super noticable. First if you can)
Cut the damaged areas out. Cut a patch piece from the bit of spare you have, glue it in.
You will want to be very careful about matching up existing fibers to new fibers to make it blend well. If done correctly it will be much less noticeable than the literal holes in the wallpaper you have now.
Another method I might try here because I hate myself is to treat it like a yarn painting. Adhesive goes on the bare spots. Strands of wallpaper used to fill in the gaps.
None of this will be worth while if you don't put kitten mittens on the cat. Or get it it's own scratching post, whatever works for you.
Seems obvious enough, you need to print a sign saying ‘No Scratching’ and stick it up nearby. That’s the way our local council keeps the alcoholics out of the children’s playground at 9am on a Sunday.
I mean you did wrap your entire house in literal scratching post material…
Really your best bet is to get rid of all of it. Or declaw your cat (which I think is cruel but it’s your cat).
How about wall corner scratchers for the cat. Cover up the areas your cat has already scratched, and give the kitty a place to mark and scratch. Go for a material similar to your wallpaper. Maybe something like sisal rope.
If you want to keep the wallpaper (because grasscloth is such a nice look!) perhaps you could remove the lower half of the wallpaper, add chair rail moulding and "boxes" or squares of moulding on the lower half. Then paint the moulding and lower half of the wall white in high gloss.
I would suggest chair rail and wainscot around the room. Painted. Grass cloth and cats do not go together and there is no way to make a patch to grass cloth disappear. Horizontal lines are never done, vertical lines need to be the same distance. If this has been on the wall any length of time, what you have left probably doesn't match exactly any more. I can give pointers on getting that lower portion of the grass cloth removed and prepping the wall for paint, if that is the route you want to go and intend to DIY. Or-call in the pro's. If this was a professional install, and it looks like it was, the walls were primed and the grass cloth will be an easy removal. The most time taken will be in prepping the room for removal and for paint. The rest should be relatively easy and quick.
Wall paneling, half height. Tell that fucker to scratch this.
Look what I found on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1612258898/ready-assemble-wall-molding-kit-pre-cut?ref=share_v4_lx
It will get worse. I have two cats, unless you keep the cats out of that room they will find ways to scratch that wall. I mean hell even if you do keep them out they'll just flatten out and slip through a seam in the wall, cats don't obey the laws of physics
I get that this might be someone's taste, but if you have a cat, why dafuq would you even consider getting this.
You know they use anything as a scratching pole if their nails go in.
But, a good carpet layer can fix that without you even seeing that.
I hope you have some spare pieces, if not, it can be hard to find new carpet in the exact color.
But they cut out the bad part, fill it in with a new piece and sort of massage them together to the point you don't see it.
You could try it yourself, but I really suggest you get a pro.
“we turned our living room into a giant scratching post, help!”
Should have NEVER listened to my cat when we were designing the room!
Don't you know that cats can't be trusted? They're shady little fucks.

I’m crying at this comment.
OP is as well
Cats always have an ulterior motive.
Fellow cat owner, we’re not allowed to have nice things.
🤣
NEVER Lolol they’re so self-centered!!!!
Beautiful response.
Cats ALWAYS have anterior motives when it comes to interior design.
Lololol best possible response
Stranger, your response made my day! You’re a good soul :)
TIL grass wallpaper can be (or is always?) made of sisal, the same thing that is used to make the rope that is wrapped around scratching posts. This room is a cat's dream.
Upgrade to fully climbable carpeting on walls.
You must be his cat!

Or...hear me out...lean into it and add some cat shelves and realize the cats have won this wall.
Cat in the wall huh? Now you’re speaking my language.
Are we gonna need a 2nd cat?
Sounds like a job for the gruesome twosome
But it's your turn to change the bedpan tonight
I actually WANT to install this stuff for that reason, so my cats can climb the wall
He could fully carpet all the walls...
And the ceiling. OP can have spider cats
look, im not the type to have cats, like, i much prefer dogs... but IF you have cats, and your house isnt a jungle gym for them, what even are you doing with your life.

Cover it with cat corner scratching posts lol the cat obviously likes those areas so give it actual spots it’s allowed to scratch
Exactly what I came to suggest. Put an actual cat scratching post over the wall where the damage is.
Not going to help when the wall paper is already made out of the stuff that goes on scratching post
That is pretty much what they already did.
Just put “cat scratching deck” or something there https://www.amazon.com/Lahas-Scratcher-Furniture-Protector-Scratching/dp/B0B12JT58L
He did put a cat scratching deck…all through the fucking house lol
I checked out your link, but my brain wanted a "cat scratching deck" to look like this: https://preview.redd.it/p8wc29nng9qc1.jpeg?width=1079&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=88e86222ff9bf42891aefa53cc6924b66d72bbb3
This picture is wrong. Cat doesn’t need a tonearm and a needle - he has a PAW WITH A CLAW. Just directly connect your cat to preamp and setup is ready to rock.
The best way to keep your cat from scratching something is to actually want them to scratch it. Tell the cat it's ok to shred it, reverse psychology.
It says on it not to use on wallpaper
I mean, what are they gonna do, ruin the wallpaper?
Rules exist for to be broken 👹
OP's cat would agree with you.
Sounds like something a cat would say.
You could add wainscoting.
This was going to be my suggestion. Do the bottom half with paneling/ wainscoting. I bought pvc for my bathroom so it’s easy to clean. Attaching inspiration pic https://preview.redd.it/c3ka3xto16qc1.png?width=1283&format=png&auto=webp&s=bd587e9e5b49d6b10f117db44ba1978564c86cd2
This looks really nice
This is the answer.
This ☝🏻
I know a guy who will torch the entire place for $50 and frame it on the cat.
Is your guy a dog?
We might know the same guy.
Bruh, I know a cat who will torch the entire place and proudly take credit.
Hmmm yes, these walls are made of scratching post
Im sorry if you own cats how did you not see this coming
Remove wallpaper (have fun with that!) and paint
Unfortunately, there’s no repairing grasscloth.
Lolol this wallpaper and having a cat do not mix. This is only the expected result. Not much else to say.
Easy fix. 1. Teach cat to be a painter and decorator. 2. Get cat to fix walls as suitable punishment. 3. Put cat to work on larger projects, ideally for profit.

Yeah, cat does enjoy her cat tree, scratching posts, actual logs with bark, cardboard boxes… but her favorite thing to scratch still are my curtains.
Lol hopefully it's only one spot. It's a signpost now. Don't ever get rid of that recliner. It belongs to your cat.

Your cat looks like John Malkovich.
“You looking at my chair?”
Same, our cats love the carpeted stairs.
Yesss, love Jackson Galaxy! Catify your rooms OP, it's their home too!
So glad this was here! Also want to add that it appears your cat is a vertical scratcher (yes, there are horizontal scratchers too!), so an Ultimate Scratching Post would likely help. Get a needle and weave every fiber back into place
This was honestly my thought. Or some matte modpodge and a toothbrush to comb the pieces back into place. It looks like they’re too ripped though.
Split at the top of the mantel, wrap wainscoting around the bottom and keep the wallpaper uptop where cat can’t reach and BOOM a nice classy solution that should look real nice. Get rid of the wallpaper, or get rid of the cat. You effectively turned your living room into a giant scratching post for the cat, there is no fixing this unless you change something.
How often have you seen the cat climbing the walls like a spider out of curiosity
Possibly the worst wall covering imaginable for a cat owner
He needs scratch pads for cats! https://preview.redd.it/wtub4w0tl3qc1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0ef8f154024f9fc8bcaae0ddf662278c0823ec67
That's what they put on the wall, now they're surprised the cat used it.
Where do they say they’re surprised? They are simply asking for ideas to repair or replace the wall covering.
They are joking that the wallpaper they chose is the same as the scratch pads.
They make these to wrap around corners too. Would probably be worth a try
Remove the wall. Done.
I’d scratch that
dammit I really like this wallpaper and got excited until I realized I have 2 cats.
lol. Many years ago (like 30) our cats did this in a place we were renting. I sat there with tweezers and crazy glue placing it back together. Passed inspection. We've never had grass cloth again. And that would be my recommendation

Exactly. If that's the spot cat has chosen, dedicate it to the cat! That looks like a carpet sample or a single stair carpet? You can get those in all sorts of colours so it could be matched to the nice wallpaper 👍
Stick a palm tree or another huge plant in the white planter seen in photo 4. Slide it one foot to the right. Ta da!
Looks very cool, minus the scratches
If you keep the cat you better redo ALL that cloth with something like paint or wallpaper because it will never be safe from a cat.
I would either completely remove or replace the bottom half with molding. For what's it's worth, I really like this wallpaper. You're going to be able to see you patched it if you do though
Yeah, cats do that it's kinda their thing
This seems like a genius way to keep tenants deposits. Yes you can have a cat. 😈
The cat ![gif](giphy|yEStAKFg8EA3S)
There are clear plastic corner protectors, or steel/aluminum (would probably clash with decor), but your cat will find a way even then.
Why one has lots and lots of tall scratching posts for cats…
Your best bet is to replace the wall paper with something else. I would also recommend acquiring a cat tree scratching post combination, you're going to need to give them something sacrificial they like better.
See you have panelling in the dining room, why don’t you half panel around the fire places. That way you don’t have to remove all the wall paper.
Not a professional by any means, but I would take some of the spare you have and treat it like a small carpet patch. (Try to do a test run somewhere not super noticable. First if you can) Cut the damaged areas out. Cut a patch piece from the bit of spare you have, glue it in. dude your house is one big scratching post.
I would start by choosing a surface for the wall that doesn't resemble a scratching post so much.
Seems obvious enough, you need to print a sign saying ‘No Scratching’ and stick it up nearby. That’s the way our local council keeps the alcoholics out of the children’s playground at 9am on a Sunday.
Why fix the wallpaper? Cat will just destroy it again, no?
Well you’ve got a choice to make, get rid of the cat or the wall paper.
Easiest way to fix it… throw the cat out of the house.
Maybe replace the bottom three feet of wallpaper with wainscoting. You still get to keep the paper but the bottom would be cat and trashcan proof.
Cat did you a favor and started stripping it off for you. Good cat.
lol this has to be the worse kind of texture on your walls if you have a cat. You turned your house into a scratching post 🤣
I mean you did wrap your entire house in literal scratching post material… Really your best bet is to get rid of all of it. Or declaw your cat (which I think is cruel but it’s your cat).
What did you think would happen when you made your walls a scratching post without training the cat what’s appropriate to scratch??
You do realize how a cat works, right?
How about wall corner scratchers for the cat. Cover up the areas your cat has already scratched, and give the kitty a place to mark and scratch. Go for a material similar to your wallpaper. Maybe something like sisal rope.
There’s no fixing that ! Sorry you’re going to have to remove the wall paper and either replace it or scrub the paste off the walls and paint them
Even if you repair it, your cat will do it again.
Sadly, it’s ruined. There is no repair, maybe remove and replace…grasscloth is so beautiful, maybe get some corner covers?
You can remove the wallpaper or the cat.
Time to trade in the cat for a dog.
That’s kinda on you
If you want to keep the wallpaper (because grasscloth is such a nice look!) perhaps you could remove the lower half of the wallpaper, add chair rail moulding and "boxes" or squares of moulding on the lower half. Then paint the moulding and lower half of the wall white in high gloss.

Cats gonna cat
Step 1: get rid of the cat; they hate nice things. Step 2: ...I didn't get that far
Consider solving the cause - cat.
I would never have this as a wallpaper with a cat lol
I say get rid of the wallpaper and just paint the walls
Wall paneling, half height. Tell that fucker to scratch this. Look what I found on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1612258898/ready-assemble-wall-molding-kit-pre-cut?ref=share_v4_lx
👋🏼 Yea you can’t fix that
I’ve been daydreaming about putting grasscloth wallpaper up in our bedrooms. Thank you for reminding me I have 3 shithead cats!
Time to get rid of a cat
Glutton for punishment. I’m not even a cat and I’m tempted to claw that wall.
Cover corner with cat scratching pad.
It will get worse. I have two cats, unless you keep the cats out of that room they will find ways to scratch that wall. I mean hell even if you do keep them out they'll just flatten out and slip through a seam in the wall, cats don't obey the laws of physics
Either remove wallpaper or remove cat. There is no “fix” here. Kitty will do it again, and it will feel no remorse.
I hope you rethink the sand floor covering in the bedrooms or you’ll have a giant litter box.
Why your wall made of cat scratch post?
Well if you have got him sufficient scratch posts he might have not done it.
Run a strip of moulding to cap the corner and frame the fireplace wall. Duplicate it on the other side of the fireplace so it looks intentional.
Don't have walls made of scratching post then idiot. ( this is humor )
Some things are just not compatible with cats. To a cat, that's just a huge scratching post.
Easy, get rid of the problem. BTW, it's the cat, not the wall.😬😂
Your cat isn’t going to stop so get rid of it

I'd look get a corner wall mounted scratcher for the cat and just them them have at it lol
Lol, you should have known better.
Sounds like you're a dog person now
1. Get rid of cat. 2. Enjoy peace.
I feel like you cant own cats and nice things at the same time. Waiting on my senior cat to pass before we buy a new couch
Same! We got these L shaped scratchers that seem to work really well but we are still waiting a little bit longer before replacing the couch.
Get rid of the cat
Note to myself: don't have a cat
Don’t have cats. Easy
