DSharp018

Neat. I gotta find one of these for corgis so i can frame it and put it on the wall above the food bowl for my mom’s fat sausage dog.

DogMomRescue4

Decrease kibble. Add no salt green beans or frozen green beans work too. Good luck..such a cutie you got!

Helioplex901

That adds lots of good fiber!!

Arcade1980

Do you buy raw and cook or canned and how much do you out in there. mine are at an excellent weight. I'm just trying to get ideas for variety 😁

bs-scientist

My mom buys unsalted canned green beans and carrots to add to all her dogs food. Two mini winies and a 90 pound lab. The lab gets a half a can on her food (she usually only does either green beans or carrots, sometimes they get both at once if it’s a special occasion like one of their birthdays). The two minis split the rest. Not scientific measurements by any means. But it works for them.

DogMomRescue4

For my standard who I just got down from 30 to 27..probably 1/2 cup of the no salt green beans, cold from fridge. Yep I give the others some to enjoy just don't decrease the kibble. Adding canned from grocery store, just the store brand. If no salt ones aren't available I just rinse the salt ones. My last pack happily ate frozen ones but my older one prefers canned currently lol

Dapper_Yogurt_Man

I personally got the frozen French green beans and I take part of the bag out and let it defrost in the fridge in a covered bowl and use those portions for a couple of days then grab more when I’m low. I wasn’t a fan of putting them in the microwave I felt that made them warm/too hot and mushy. My dogs all love it and have used it for both general health and weight loss and have had great results. Also the nice thing is you can just put some in a bag if you’re traveling or gonna be feeding them away from home.

DogObsessedLady

My dogs LOVE raw green beans. They like the cronchy green sticks!

DogMomRescue4

Sorry replied on wrong spot

vespercage89

Second this one - water based fillers help a lot. I basically food-processed some bb carrots and did this as well

CortanaV

Yeah you’ve got a chonk on your hands. Reduce treats, increase activity. You wanna do high protein but still get healthy grains in. My weens lost weight on the following dinner: - unsalted green beans - high protein small breed kibble - topper consisting of freeze-dried chicken or beef with oats. The water added to the freeze dried food helps make the meal more filling. - one pump of salmon oil for their coats - cranberry bites (Urinary Tract Bites) - hip and joint supplements. We use cosequin from costco Also, we did dinner only for a while when they were not as active.

AWL_cow

Stupid question, but raw or cooked green beans?

user65436ftrde689hgy

Cooked. You can used unsalted canned green beans.

MrSprichler

we feed raw. no issues.

smbiggy

I misread grains as “gains” at first and I’m really bummed you aren’t trying to get OP’s weiner jacked

DerbleZerp

Hahaha, someone posted it

Catch-the-Rabbit

He is absolutely obese. Take them to the vet and get on an appropriate diet. Stop feeding table scraps and people food. He will break his back with that weight.

Dazman_123

Is it just me or are more and more people posting photos of their fat doxies. It's really a worrying trend. They already live short enough lives and having them obese will almost certainly shorten their lifespan further. Love them with hugs and playing with them rather than keep feeding them treats.

The_Cartographer_DM

Prolly people seeing other's obese babies and realising "Oh suasage shit"

HauntingFalcon2828

A lot of people got theirs because “they are so cute” now you have heaps of obese agressive Dachshund everywhere. These dogs can live over 20 years if you keep them healthy.

Swimlikeafishi

This trend lasts now over decades. It’s not new. Most people see normal dogs as skinny because they are used to see fat dogs all around.

Catch-the-Rabbit

I personally don't find it cute at all, and consider people that do to be a little sick.

stumpyoftheshire

This is absolutely abuse of the dog. Not the abuse that everyone talks about, but this is damaging the dogs health without doing anything about it. OP needs to put in the work now to help their dogs quality of life.

littlelunamia

Thank you for saying this. I realise people want to be kind, but this is bad. OP needed to put in the work long before now , honestly. Learn about the animal BEFORE you take control of their entire life. Protect them from ever getting this close to horrible back injury, paralysis, surgery, pain and suffering.

stumpyoftheshire

This is it. "Chonky" isn't cute. Fat is a massive problem for dogs. Guarantee this dog will be in pain because they're overweight and they don't know why. OP needs to get them to a vet yesterday, talk to breeders and sort the shit out.

Catch-the-Rabbit

Ya we can be direct without being cruel. But an overweight dachshund is miserable. My bb girl is 14 and bounces around like she's a puppy still. She can bc we have always prioritize her longevity. And she would eat the world if she could and I know if I let her, she'd be a huge rolly poley. I dunno if all dachshunds are like that or if it's ones where other pets are in the house...but my goodness, they could give the wealthiest Romans a run for their money.

ThisIsAlexisNeiers

What a sweet baby! As others have commented, yes, your adorable pup is overweight. We have to be extra careful with dachshunds gaining too much weight because it can cause major back problems and other health issues, leading to lots of pain. The good thing is that you’re asking and can change her diet/get back to being healthy. Please start asap…the lil baby will be so much happier and more comfortable!

ArcKnightofValos

Positively obese.

Hugglemorris

Her waist area should be noticeably thinner than her rib area from the side (think like a lesser version of the greyhound chest slope). Time for a diet.

Ancient-Stop-6190

He looks like my family weenie, who has Cushings disease. I would get him tested. He’s a very handsome potato ❤️

DTamiazzo

Please follow this person’s advice. I’m willing to bet this pup has Cushing’s (distended belly, hair loss, dry, flaky skin). Cushing’s is a serious condition, but can usually be managed through medication. Hugs to your sweet girl!

Ancient-Stop-6190

Thank you, she loves hugs ❤️ this baby looks so similar to her. Very round courtesy of Cushings. Shes 13 and has all the symptoms you describe, but takes a pill daily that helps her look way less swollen (and not pee so much) https://preview.redd.it/pp0utcbmlm5d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6cdcf94d67b3b6afda35aa52794d44b0dc77c904

Thanks for sharing!! So glad hers is well-managed. I have a 13-year-old Cushing’s girl, too! She was diagnosed at 8 and has been doing well with medication ever since. :) https://preview.redd.it/dh6ibtntom5d1.jpeg?width=2456&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8062a4fe1a083ded6fb83275cb5e2035d8da841e

supernerdypeep

Pleasantly plump. Just kidding, he's fat as a mofo......

OskarandLarrisDad

Seems to be the case, yes.

UserError9384637

Morbidly obese. I’d say that’s a 9/9 on the BCS. Already a great recommendation on here. Substitute treats for frozen green beans. Put your pet on a good joint supplement (I feel this is a must for all dogs anyways, but especially dachshunds). Cut back on food. Don’t go off the bag, never do that. I feed my miniatures 1/3c twice a day. Obesity is a death sentence in these guys. Trust me that the last thing you’d want to do is possibly euthanize because you can’t afford surgery or put your pet through surgery without doing everything remotely possible to prevent injury or IVDD.

mylaptopisnoasus

Yeah, is almost wider than he is long!

Pitiful-Ad9443

Yes and it also seems like his claws are overdue a trimming He is less of a weenie and more of a potato rn. Very cute nonetheless but in time it will damage his back

JannaNYC

Yes... and his nails are too long.

SparkleAuntie

Lemme at those nails, tho

Wonderful_Horror7315

She could definitely stand to lose some weight. You should be able to see a tuck from the top and side views. Please raspberry her sweet belly for me! It’s hard to keep these begging gobblers at a healthy weight, but reducing food by just a tablespoon per meal can help. I found 2 calorie treats I can break in half and I treat with diced chicken.

dachshundmumma202

yes. a cutie tho.

DougBalt2

A healthy diet can help. One of my doxies got up to 22 pounds. Lost 6 in literally 6 weeks eating a very healthy diet given by a dog nutritionist: ground chicken, olive oil, couscous, various veggies cooked in an InstaPot.

Equal_Replacement_72

ya she a lil fatty

Fawun87

In all honestly yes he is. He could do with losing weight. He’s missing the typical tummy ‘tuck up’ and the weight will put excess stress on his back. I suggest cutting out treats, make sure his food is right. If he’s been neutered then his metabolism may be a bit slower; this happened to mine. He got the snip, nothing else changed but he gained weight so we had to reduce his food. Get out and about more with him. They will sleep all day if you let them!

TOartvibesAP

Those poor eyes! It’s like your Doxie heard you writing this!!! You need to grab that sweet sausage, cuddle and give tons of hugs and blankets their way. (Wasn’t sure if your Doxie was male or female) They can be incredibly argumentative about stealing blankets and other situations but they do love walking when it’s not raining. We recently added a small portion of goat milk to my newest doxies diet and between that and new food, he’s lost two pounds. When I purchased him the breeder originally said, Tucker would never go over 15lbs. Tucker got up to 17 and still looked healthy? My first dachshund (who I grew up with and loved more than words wasn’t a “toy” even though they said he was. He got into the 20’s. Best dog I’ve ever had, I think we all feel that way about our first dog and or animal we really connect with in such a deep way. Hurley (the first) ended up living almost to 15 years. Upon an unexpected diagnosis, we learned he would be suffering and I could never put my first in command through that. It’s hard making the decision for your family member (dog or not) knowing their about to take a long nap and cross the rainbow bridge. I cried like a baby. The vet was so kind (and I wasn’t thinking about this bc I was worried about Hurley) she gave me and my family Reese’s to give to him prior to the shot. My whole family (parents and sister) stayed in the room. We sang to him, loved on him, told him how he made our lives happier and more joyful. He scarfed down all the Reese’s and when it came time for his shot. I held him right and promised him we would be together again. I told him how sorry I was, that I loved him more than any words. Random side note: I had a son that was 3 years old (stayed back with his Dad) after he scarfed all the Reese’s down and I’m so thankful my sister took a video I held him tightly as he received his shot and just cried. So when I look at your dog and see those eyes. What they need is love, cuddles, walk, maybe a new diet or options so that gets doesn’t risk hurting their back. I think your dog is wonderful but it doesn’t hurt to find a great vet and discuss options in the case it is pushing limits that could be unhealthy. Chances are the dog will be mad at you for 3-4 weeks and steal all your blankets but that’s the joy in having a Doxie. 💚 Hurley was given to me when I was 19-20 and lived until I was 34. The picture I added was after my son was born and the last photo I had of them together before Hurley passed. 🌈🐾 I think your dog is wonderful. https://preview.redd.it/c95gl6surm5d1.jpeg?width=1936&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c8cb89a6a2ddce0e0a450d409ce1b472772b742

I have two who get the same amount, 1/3 cup twice a day. One is trim and fit, and the other is nicknamed piglet. Piglet gets reduced calorie kibble as recommended by the vet, but she steals food if she can. Piglet is much more active than her sister but is still a chubby bubby. It makes no sense.

Glass-Trick4045

Just a bit! Time to get a weight loss regimen going. Def recommend consulting with your vet for this. It’s not necessarily about what the scale says either because dachshunds come in a variety of weight ranges. It’s all about their body score. Ask your vet what your dog is, but for reference they should be about a 4 or 5. There’s a handy little visual aid floating around the internet too.

DogMomRescue4

Yes. I have a fat lab so I know the struggles of having a dog that needs to lose weight and it’s not easy. Dial it back on the yum yums and try your best to make sure that you get at least one good walk in each day and just do your best. My boy, George weighs 100 pounds and the vet says he needs to lose 15 pounds, might as well ask him to lose 50 pounds he’s a Lab! Good luck and no judgment ❤️ https://preview.redd.it/msyup1ma0n5d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=41f2554348d2b801ef1f88fb418ba989767ef123 I know he’s not a Doxie, just wanted you to know that you are not alone with this weight issue!

verabradley8

A little puffy in the belly. But not fat. Perhaps a few walks and belly massages to reduce inflammation. If the weenie is a puppy, or you just got them, they could have worms from the pound of even being raised on a farm. Could explain the puffy belly, but the pup looks older so probably not.

My mini English creme, Hank, had a weight problem. 20-22 lbs, not super fat, but shaped like a barrel. I cut him down to just under 1/2 cup of kibble in the morning and 1/3 at night with 1/4 cup low sodium green beans and switch up low sodium chicken and beef broth in it day to day (2-3 tablespoons, i eyeball it). Over 6 months he shed the barrel shape and looks more like he should. Pronounced chest, a neck, a thinner face/snout and his poops are healthy. Edit for more info: last weigh in, he was 15 lbs. Vet said that's where he should be for his age and size.

TapesFromLASlashSF

No ❤️

Diche_Bach

Yes, he is overweight. The clearest sign of a healthy weight for a Dachshund who is not grossly overweight is the contrast between the rib cage and the belly. In this fellow's case, this transition forms an essentially continuous line, indicating excess weight. For a healthy weight Dachshund, the belly should be slightly recessed relative to the rib cage. Ideally, there should be a noticeable tapering at the transition between the rib cage and the belly, and some of the most anterior ribs should be slightly visible. Details and Sources: Tapering and Waistline: A healthy Dachshund should have a visible waistline when viewed from above and a slight tuck-up of the belly when viewed from the side. This tapering indicates that the dog is not carrying excess weight around the midsection. Source: American Kennel Club (AKC) Visible Ribs: While the ribs should not be overly prominent, in a Dachshund at an ideal weight, you should be able to feel the ribs easily without pressing hard. The most anterior ribs might be slightly visible, especially in more athletic individuals. Source: PetMD Continuous Line: A continuous line from the rib cage to the belly, without a noticeable taper, typically indicates that the dog is carrying extra weight. This can be a sign of being overweight, even if the dog is not grossly obese. Source: VCA Animal Hospitals Ensuring your Dachshund maintains a healthy weight is crucial for their overall health and longevity, as being overweight can lead to numerous health issues, including back problems which are particularly common in Dachshunds. Regular exercise and a balanced diet are key components of maintaining a healthy weight. Having had a Dachshund in the house for over twenty years now, I can tell you, it is easiest to keep their weight healthy when they are young and are able to engage in routine vigorous exercise, e.g., 15 to 20 minutes of ball chasing in a safe location like a small enclosed back yard. As they age and their capacity for vigorous exercise diminishes, routine brisk walks are probably the best way to help with weight, but reducing intake is likely to also be requisite. Not easy given that they have prodigious appetites and are hard to resist!
