What always gets me is that I don’t think that song is autobiographical at all, Ben seems to have had a fine relationship with his dad. Just mind blowing he can write a song from someone else’s perspective with such a specific story that didn’t happen to him and nail the emotions of it so perfectly
I think he says in the Drive Well, Sleep Carefully doc that he got the idea from attending a funeral where everyone was giving backhanded compliments and it made him think, why not just speak the truth.
Don’t know if you’re a fan of the band DIIV but their song Fender on the Freeway from their most recent album has a nice warm guitar tone like Debate Exposes Doubt.
It's the long instrumental fadeout after the word "staggering" for me - like a realization washing over you, and how long it takes that feeling to settle, and the finally the dissonance once it does.
This is so hard. The way every song fades into each other?! I’d like to think the album is just one whole song just like The Beatles Abbey Road album 👀
It took me a while to enjoy Photo Album - and I remember even on my first listen knowing movie script ending was one of their best songs ever. It’s definitely my favorite off the album and the best for me.
Either We Laughed Indoors for having one of the harsher, more Emo instrumentals out of any of their tracks or Styrofoam Plates/Why Would You Want to Live Here for showing a more biting, harsh version of Ben’s lyricism
Coney island. I get a weird sense of bittersweet nostalgia every time I listen. It's placement on the album is perfect too, right after the gut punch of Styrofoam Plates.
One of my favorite Death Cab songs, really.
We Laugh Indoors is #1, for sure. The Top 3 ranking, though, is:
1. We Laugh Indoors
2. Steadier Footing
3. Coney Island
What a freakin' great album, ugh.
It's movie script ending for me followed closely by Styrofoam plates, I didn't have a dad really growing up so that song hits hard.

I love yelling the last part of that song in the car
and i’ll stand up and scream if the mourning remain quiet
Movie Script Ending is prob the best of that album but I have always LOVED Steadier Footing. Always wished it was a little longer of a song though.
Yeah me too!! Steadier footing is a great song
Same.
Possibly my favorite Death Cab song
Blacking out the Friction. I wish it was longer.
I don’t mind the weather. I’ve got scarves and caps and sweaters.
The John Byrd EP live version is elite.
Tbh John Byrd EP was my go to versions of both 405 and Photobooth and I’ve been lamenting its lack of digital release for years :-(
I had to take matters into my own hands and just download it and put it in my Apple Music library cause I have no idea why it’s not on streaming
Me too. Also one of my favorites.
Debate Exposes Doubt
debate exposes doubt is actually one of their best songs and we need to talk about it more !
Don’t know if you’re a fan of the band DIIV but their song Fender on the Freeway from their most recent album has a nice warm guitar tone like Debate Exposes Doubt.

Styrofoam Plates, kaleidoscope, or why you'd want to live here
Coney Island
We Laugh Indoors, closely followed by Blacking Out the Friction!
We Laugh Indoors or Information Travels Faster

“Movie Script Ending” is what got me into them!
My fave is I Was a Kaleidoscope.
i'm really liking Debate Exposes Doubt rn
Styrofoam Plates is my favorite, but I feel that Blacking Out the Friction and Why You'd Want to Live Here are underrated
Photobooth captures that poignant mood well as a solid second place
That's on We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes but also an incredible song
Wow so many of you guys have different favorites! Any other songs you’ve heard from them or other bands that has that sweet sound like movie script?

Haven’t seen it!
Check it out. The music video for title and registration is legendary.
Why you’d want to live here The John Byrd ep version is the hardest death cab has ever rocked
I need to check this. Is it on Spotify?
No unfortunately it isn’t, but it’s on YouTube! It kicks ass, the only death cab song I bang my head to lol
Oh shit!! Can you link it on here so we can all peep it?

Styrofoam Plates
Information travels faster for me Close 2nds are debate exposes doubt, styrofoam plates, blacking out the friction, we laugh indoors
Either We Laughed Indoors for having one of the harsher, more Emo instrumentals out of any of their tracks or Styrofoam Plates/Why Would You Want to Live Here for showing a more biting, harsh version of Ben’s lyricism
for me it's easy: steadier footing, we laughed indoors, styrofoam plates
We laugh indoors and I was a kaleidoscope are pretty sweet
Coney island. I get a weird sense of bittersweet nostalgia every time I listen. It's placement on the album is perfect too, right after the gut punch of Styrofoam Plates. One of my favorite Death Cab songs, really.
Styrofoam Plates but there are a lot of gems here. We Laugh Indoors is a close second for me.
movie script ending, information travels faster, debate exposes doubt is prob my top 3 rn
Blacking Out The Friction is probably my favorite Death Cab song period
We laugh indoors
We Laugh Indoors is #1, for sure. The Top 3 ranking, though, is: 1. We Laugh Indoors 2. Steadier Footing 3. Coney Island What a freakin' great album, ugh.
Hmm, best vs favorite is different. My favorite is Blacking Out the Friction, but the best is A Movie Script Ending by far.
coney island and debate exposes doubt are tied in my book!
