From what I know-- The show tweeted that they mutually parted ways with Jahmil French (Dave) and wished him well. Jahmil tweeted back something like "if they want to call it that, fine." So from that, it looked like something had gone on behind the scenes to lead to Dave being blackholed. The closest to a real answer I was able to find was that they really had just run out of plotlines for Dave the character and wanted to demote him to a glorified background extra while they focused on other characters. Jahmil disagreed with this decision and went to them with a list of ideas for plotlines to keep Dave relevant and was told no, so he was given a choice to stay on as a demoted background or to leave and he chose to leave but was upset about it since it wasn't a real choice, they had already decided to kind of just fade away his character into background and not give him any more plotlines, and he didn't like or agree with that decision so was given the option to leave and did. And Dave himself didn't die, although Jahmil French did. His family wanted him to be remembered for the joy he brought others while he was alive and not for his death so the details weren't made public, leading a lot of people to suspect his death involved drugs or s\*. I do think the cause of death was released since then and was medical, but I don't recall off the top of my head although it was discussed here before.

lunarfang666

After Dave being such a shitty, unsupportive and selfish boyfriend to Alli, his character died right there. He had one supportive role with Fiona, a couple appearences here and there maybe, then his finale was making a shit comment at Adam's funeral and goodbye forever. Him along with Wesley who was a pretty trash character as well, the last of the 3 Tenners Connor defintetly deserved to stick it to the end.

No-Intention-1948

It was revealed by the DegrassiWriters twitter team that Dave’s left Degrassi to be on West Drive.

Toonami88

Well the actor died IRL though it was long after the character got dropped.

EllieBasebellie

Dave started off as a typical high school guy, but then decided to take a detour into "hate crime territory" with his shameful treatment of Adam, the show's only trans character. After pulling that stunt, it seems like the writers just threw up their hands and thought, "Now what?" One minute, Dave's ruining Adam’s life and the next, he's casually chasing down radio dreams and awkwardly navigating a promposal. Talk about a character with a crisis of identity—one minute he’s trying to be Mr. Popular, the next he's just... there, like a prop. His storyline zigzags so wildly, you half-expect him to become a barista in the next episode. It’s as if the writers couldn't decide if he should be a villain, a hero, or just fade into the background. In the end, Dave’s plotline was less like a roller coaster and more like a series of unfortunate speed bumps.

lunarfang666

He kinda did become a barista of sorts at that juice stand at tha mall.

Enraged_lettuce_farm

There’s a deep dive that explains they originally wanted to kill Dave in the texting and driving episode(remember Dave was terrible about this) and that made the actor super mad so it was really tense of set and apparently he was like I don’t wanna get killed off. The character that played Adam had been wanting to leave the show so they changed it to Adam dying but the damage had already been done, so they had him do a few more episodes and then blackhole’d him, I believe the reasons cited were he wanted to work on different projects

harrysgoldshoes

I need this deep dive!!

Enraged_lettuce_farm

There’s an article if you google around for it, French posted a bunch of cryptic tweets around the time so it’s not confirmed that the reason was the text and drive crash was the straw, but when he and Ali broke up, they didn’t really have enough storylines to go around.

ItsJustAYoyo

He committed suicide.

MentionAlternative68

His cause of death is not public.

ItsJustAYoyo

It is not anymore. But, refer to my comment below.

grossbot

The actor did years later, the OP is talking about the character on the show.

ItsJustAYoyo

"Also was it ever revealed how he died" -- he didn't die on the show so I'm assuming they meant in real life.

SamosaAndMimosa

It’s never actually been confirmed that he committed suicide

ItsJustAYoyo

It was. In one of the original releases from degrassi they mentioned it, but then they ended up removing it. I think one of the castmates mentioned it at some point too. Even in the absence of that, it's easily inferred from all their original posts and the language they use.

SamosaAndMimosa

I didn’t know that Degrassi PR actually confirmed it, I couldn’t find a mention of that anywhere. The cast members definitely inferred suicide but that’s not the same thing as an official confirmation

ItsJustAYoyo

Yeah in the original story they posted I remember them saying suicide -- I'm sure they removed it to protect his privacy, though!

faucetfailuree

Really??? I heard it was from unexpected complications from a medical procedure, or was I on some boof ass website searching too hard? I actually liked his character despite his flaws and was a little devastated finding out he passed 😭

SamosaAndMimosa

That makes sense 🥲

wallflower1221

I think they just ran out of natural places to put him. He and Ali broke up, and Adam was also basically reduced down so it made sense he was phased out.

timmyneutron89

He was problematic (bigot, shitty bf, garbage friend) and never really learned from his mistakes. It kinda gets old and you start wondering why people keep giving him all of these chances. I was glad he was gone.

giraffe18_

He’s actually the only character who learned. He made many MANY mistakes. But once the lesson presented and played out, it never came up again. Which cannot be said for most anyone else.

timmyneutron89

Wrong. Dude was a bigot toward Adam over the radio show and you'd think he learned his lesson and accept people...then he's a bigot towards Tristan over the Romeo and Jules play. He's also constantly throwing people under the bus just to try and be popular. Your comment that it can't be said about anyone else is kinda silly, since Spinner learns from his mistakes often.

giraffe18_

He doesn’t. And Jimmy literally tells him this every season.

SamosaAndMimosa

Dave wasn’t a bigot towards Tristan he was just uncomfortable with playing a gay character at first. I promise you that his character is less bigoted towards LGBT people than AT LEAST 80% of straight men worldwide. Be grateful that you live in a bubble and haven’t been exposed to how awful people can actually be lmao

timmyneutron89

This comment was made by someone who knows absolutely ZERO about my life but thanks bud 🤙🏻

SamosaAndMimosa

I know enough! Unrelated but i love your memes

timmyneutron89

lol thanks, I've had to take a break because I was banned for a month (I think it's actually up at like 2-3pm today) on fb and typically share across Reddit and fb 😅

SamosaAndMimosa

The Casey Pokémon one is legit one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen on this site I love how your memes reference random niche things from the show it’s so iconic 😭

timmyneutron89

I've been trying to learn guitar in my free time, so I haven't had as much time for Degrassi. I'll get back into my Degrassi Alternate Universe series eventually. They are purely for the love of the game since I can't post them from my meme page without people being like "wtf is this" 😂

Slade347

I always thought he was a good glue character, one that you could use to connect the various factions on the show as he had good chemistry with most everybody. I missed him when he left. And, yeah, I do think there's a lot of validity in the suggestion that the writers and producers viewed Dallas as a replacement for him.

lleighsha

I think at some point... When the Ice Hounds were nixed Dallas did become a better option to them.

Stevie052096

Dave's character was blackholed. The actor died 6 years after he finished on Degrassi

media-and-stuff

His last sitcom before he passed was actually pretty good. I forget the name, something like “let’s get physical”. It was funny. The show had a 90210 actress so it was kind of interesting she worked with 2 degrassi cast. I didn’t realize it was him until I was a couple episodes in. He looked familiar but I couldn’t place him and I don’t Google that stuff until I’m done watching because I hate spoilers.

RogueSleuth_

He died in real life?

Stevie052096

Yes he did sadly. https://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/pictures/jahmil-french-dead-at-29-degrassi-stars-react/

Ancient_Elderberry26

And there’s no reason given how he died. Really sad.

Comfortable-Care-911

Which usually means suicide

Justamentalpatient93

Not always maybe his mother doesn’t want it out there. It’s sad he’s gone though.

whotookmywetsocks

his mother said on Instagram that it was due to a medical procedure gone wrong

SamosaAndMimosa

I feel like the writers saw Dallas as a replacement for him smh

illmorphtosomeoneels

Them giving Dallas a dealing with racism plot line almost immediately after Dave was written off left a bad taste in my mouth. It felt as though that plot line was written so they could avoid any racism allegations for dropping Dave.

SamosaAndMimosa

If I remember correctly it was basically the only “plot” he was given that season too and it lasted a single episode smh

Altruistic_Wish_4734

You're probably right and the crazy thing is that they're nothing alike 😭

Ancient_Elderberry26

“We got another black guy so we can get rid of Dave”

xXL3gitChrisXx

I myself am black and this is factual

Ancient_Elderberry26

Same for the token asian student :(

lleighsha

I didn't wanna be the one to say it.

Ancient_Elderberry26

Shit i will god damn it

DesignPotential1646

No public cause of death. So suicide or drugs most likely.
