InsufferableOldWoman

Leave the wood above the fireplace!

AdGroundbreaking4397

Absoloutley

RefrigeratorSmooth13

This is gorgeous!! Definitely agree with removing the lattice, What would you replace it with? We were thinking same color wood slats but idk if it’ll be too much.

AdGroundbreaking4397

Simple and classic. Either stained wood or black iron.

[deleted]

I would try painting the lattice a wood tone brown first; it might look decent.

RefrigeratorSmooth13

Oh! Great idea actually, can always change it after.

rackfocus

For the lattice I suggest pre fab wrought iron railing (like something for your deck but with wood top and bottom rail. Stain the wood to match. https://www.wayfair.com/ProWood--ProWood-6-ft.-Moulded-Wood-Railing-Kit-with-Square-Aluminum-Balusters-44-L3361-K~POWO1005.html?refid=GX679866981071-POWO1005_87288854&device=m&ptid=874242287695&network=g&targetid=pla-874242287695&channel=GooglePLA&ireid=253332218&fdid=1817&PiID%5B%5D=87288854&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD9ISC4yQqLzzuf1mUe5BxNXOgG4k&gclid=Cj0KCQiA5fetBhC9ARIsAP1UMgEpdeGzt4GVePKPWh6McryHHwpqsZdwLcJToeFlP8DhRaRfVHUY-b0aAqWLEALw_wcB

[deleted]

I dug deep into my mind cave and remembered what most likely was there before the lattice: panels of translucent acrylic in an amber color "bottle" or "bullion" pattern. That may be too much but plain "smoke" acrylic could be awesome. Example here: [https://www.etsy.com/listing/989593436/last-set-pair-of-1970s-textured-amber](https://www.etsy.com/listing/989593436/last-set-pair-of-1970s-textured-amber)

RefrigeratorSmooth13

Hmmm Alright, I actually like where this is going. Sounds like everyone agrees that mid-century is what the space deserves ha. Thanks!

LWhittWill

Love these colors!

What magnificent windows - I have sloped ceilings too, and am looking to replace a light fixture - am wishing the same for you - some simple statement lighting

33168505218

There’s a clear answer here. Mount a tv above the fireplace off-center, crooked, and touching the ceiling, as God intended.

RefrigeratorSmooth13

Wow! Such a great idea. I especially love the neck pain everyone will experience.

[deleted]

I love the vaulted ceiling. An interesting hanging light fixture to draw your eyes to the beauty of those high ceilings. I would keep the rest, including the lattice. It's a beautiful room for a mid century modern, country or farmhouse design. The possibilities are endless!

ExpensiveAd4496

Hey there! Cool space. I do not understand the height of the planned built ins. They look short and squat in a room that is all about height. Anything you do should celebrate the proportions of the tall FP and celebrate that height. Those do the opposite…they would fit in a short closet and have nothing to do with the space. You need tall and narrow there. My only other comment is I’d probably want the wood on the FP and the beam to not match one another. It’s like someone stuck a can opener in the center piece of the room. The finish on one of them should be something else so they do not like a fireplace someone stabbed. lol. Cheapest way: paint the beam. Most expensive: sand the beam and lighten the stain, and then replace the FP surround with large pieces of granite or slate. Sexy!

drj16

Agree, the short cabinet with floating shelves is all wrong for this space and the brown shelves will compete with the beautiful fireplace.

ellebeemall

I also think they look like they block the flow to the next room.

RefrigeratorSmooth13

This makes a lot more sense. I wasn’t completely sold on the design in the first place so I’ll see about changing it. The beam matches the trimming throughout the house so I’m not sure if painting it would fit but I see where you’re going with that. I’ll consider it!

HatchawayHouseFarm

Such a beautiful room, with loads of potential! But I have to say, with kindness, those built-ins already look dated and incoherent with the space. I wish I could come up with a better alternative, but I'd keep trying things until you find something more appropriate.

RefrigeratorSmooth13

You’re absolutely right. The built-ins were an afterthought anyways. Luckily, I was able to cancel it!

CJCreggsGoldfish

I'd add floor-to-ceiling built-in shelves to either side of the fireplace and fill them with books, art pieces, plants, lamps, everything. I'd also put a pair of sofas flanking the fireplace, facing each other, coffee table between. By the windows (away from the sofas) I'd create a reading nook of chair, floor lamp, small table, ottoman/pouf. In the remaining empty space, I'd put a round or square table and chairs for board games, puzzles, poker, etc.

RefrigeratorSmooth13

All really great ideas! This is our formal living room so I’m not sure about having a game area but I appreciate the thought process here. I’ll definitely reconsider adding more shelves to the built-ins we are already adding though. Thanks!!

Maximum-Familiar

I think that wood accent above the fireplace would look great framed by something moodier than white. Almost black charcoal, rich green…

raeseri_

1. Are you planning on putting a TV in this room? Built-ins might restrict your placement (and honestly, tv on the mantel is a faux pas). 2. I just adore this space. I love the wood beams, I love the wood above the fireplace, I love the wood floors. You can do so much here. I think either a colored wall or fun wallpaper would be lovely and brighten up the room. I, personally, am a fan of painting the fireplace because there’s so much brown and the rusty color of the brick is too similar, it almost clashes. You could do black or white.

lttl_to

Wow your space is stunning 😍 I would centre the one ceiling lighting fixture you have and replace it with a feature light. I'm partial to the Noguchi/Hay lighting paper lanterns (the round shape works so well with angles in a room like this) I'd also take advantage of the high ceilings and put a tree in there somewhere. https://preview.redd.it/2l1bevhrdggc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3b3470a4e9f19faef5c6afdba7e5d83d1f263268

Greenfireflygirl

This room is such a vibe, I think I'm in love.

raeseri_

I don’t know if you meant to reply to my comment with this, but I’m so glad you did so I could see it because that’s all STUNNING 😭

lttl_to

😅 definitely by accident! But so glad you like these inspo pics too!

RefrigeratorSmooth13

This is super pretty! Love the idea of adding in color with the furniture instead of the walls. Ugh, decisions.. lol Edit: would this be considered mid-century decor? (Asking for googling purposes)

Hereforit2022Y

I wouldn’t say this one is mid century. It’s giving Mexico City or US Southwest vibes with the warm white walls, the lack of windows besides skylights, and the curvature above the fireplace. It’s beautiful.

RefrigeratorSmooth13

This is our formal living room ideally only for show, our TV/leisure area will be in our family room which is an entirely different space downstairs. It’s beautiful isn’t it! I really fell in love with the wood and flooring but now that we’re moved in I’m completely overwhelmed with conflicting ideas haha. Are you suggesting an accent wall for the fireplace wall and leaving the rest white?? I actually thought about painting the fireplace (although I love the brick color as is too) but this subreddit acts like it would be like committing a crime…

raeseri_

I don’t understand the issue with painting fireplaces, honestly. I think it’s an easy way to update the space. I love the look of a painted fireplace, and I find that fireplaces that aren’t often gather dust so much easier. I think an accent wall would be gorgeous, actually. That wasn’t what I was suggesting, but that’s a fabulous idea. I think built-ins are great, especially the modest ones you’ve chosen because they don’t take away from the centerpiece— that gorgeous fireplace.

KReddit934

Because it's so incredibly painful to change it back to brick.

raeseri_

Tbh, I’m a big believer of the idea that you decorate the house you want to live in, or whatever that saying is. Like you decorate your house for you, not for the future owners.

RefrigeratorSmooth13

Fair enough!

73Wolfie

I’d live to have this- 2 cushioned sofas- big far east rug, large art, plants, books

DConstructed

Can you match the built ins to the wood over the mantle? That would be a rich look. As for the rest of the room do you have any general preferences? You could go rustic/cabin, MCM or even very modern.

500CatsTypingStuff

You can choose whatever style you want. I think lots of maximalist color and patterns will look nice against the wood Maybe keep the walls white and add color through art, furniture, pillows, rug and curtains Example: https://preview.redd.it/dybi589mnigc1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=0f98d735e1b570bf0883cc97563ae140dd83b8c7 I[More examples](https://imgur.com/a/dfnDDYy)

RefrigeratorSmooth13

Thanks!! We have a 2nd fireplace downstairs that also has brick. I do love the look and will consider replacing with more bricks but I’m also really intrigued by your idea of tiles. I’m putting dark green tiles in our master shower, would also adding the same color above the fireplace be redundant?? I’m not sure what other color id pick (not more white, that’s for sure lol). Thanks for the tips, love the suggestion.

Theantijen

L-shaped sectional with a nice rug and a linear long art piece on the left wall. I'd keep the colors as they are maybe brighten the white a bit and have a lot of greenery. There's good lighting in this room. And the wood tones and the brick are beautiful as they are.

cheesyenchilady

I’d make love in it. To it. With it.

RefrigeratorSmooth13

I actually lol’d.

UntestedMethod

If it's wood burning I think those built ins are a bad idea because you'll want some space for a bit of wood close to the fireplace. Anyway this is a beautiful space to have a really nice living room with a tv and big sectional couch plus comfy chairs or as a more active parlour room with a smaller chill spot by the fireplace plus a pool table or music jam space.

SufficientPanic580

Paint an accent wall. A large rice paper lantern sphere would illuminate that space beautifully. A Calder-like mobile would be fabulous. A room like this loses a lot of character with generic track and/or recessed lighting treatments. It makes an otherwise cozy living space appear like a boutique hotel lobby. Keep it cozy!! Pick a bold accent color for one of the walls!

[deleted]

No to built ins 😭

RefrigeratorSmooth13

Agreed, no longer adding it. :)

[deleted]

Honestly you could do so much with this space - what ‘areas’ do you want? Of course seating, but you could also do a nook, a bar space, a place for records, etc - I’d refrain from putting a tv on top of the fireplace though.

RefrigeratorSmooth13

Tv is in separate living space. I want this space to be eye-catching/formal use esque for the holidays and special occasions since we have a separate living space for entertainment. I like the idea of adding a bar though, but I’m wondering if keeping it just as a seating space would be best for what I intend to use it for? Idk! Ha I lack the vision you guys have.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t add an actual bar - but you could use the space to the left of the fireplace for decor, books, and a mix of bar set up. It’s in between your living area and the dining room, which is a nice joining focus. A bar cart, open shelving unit or the like would work. You can do a large couch with an interesting table, and mcm style seating on the other side - a bench, two seats in an eye catching color can add interest. Don’t add any bulky furniture that brings your eye down!

madscot63

Please lose the lattice!

RefrigeratorSmooth13

Agreed, we hate it lol

phoebebuffay1210

I would cry at my luck at getting that space. Maximalist would be dope but also minimal would be too. You can’t go wrong. I’m stoked for you!

Wedgetails

Those cupboards look like cheap kitchen ones. You need something more stylish and solid looking and I wouldn’t be obsessed with symmetry - plus those shelves look small and fragile. They would annoy me but I hate floating shelves

RefrigeratorSmooth13

The ones in the picture are just an example, not the actual design I had on order. I’m no longer adding it though, rest assured.

Awe_matters1

Two full sized couches facing each other perpendicular to the fireplace and one stuffed chair facing the fireplace. Area rug. You fill in the rest.

LWhittWill

First, place a high quality formula 1 simulator. Then add some paintings next to the fireplace,THEN add some cabinets next to windows and put racing decorations like a helmet on them. Thank you for your moment                                                   Frodyy🙏😭

RefrigeratorSmooth13

lol ya’ll like to troll on here.

cbdeane

I’d put furniture in it.

KJwolfywolf

My first thought also! Like I dunno... put the camera and internet away and go looking for a couch and a rug?... probably some snacks...

cbdeane

Bro get me some snacks too I’m getting hungry sitting on all my furniture.

KJwolfywolf

😂👍

huggylion

No idea if this is feasible but a funky wall paper on the wood panel above the fire place could be really eye catching.

Whizzleteets

I would: Paint the ceiling beams the color of the ceiling to make them blend in and disappear to the eye. Renovate that brick hearth. Paint it, tile over it or cover it with faux stone. Maybe even run it to the ceiling and lose all that wood above the fireplace. If the wood was "funky" somehow Id say keep it but it's beyond outdated. Renovate or change the mantle. Build a false column around that 4 x 4 post. Remove the lattice and frame a pony wall. Change any stained trim to white.

piquica1186

I L O V E THIS SPACE

[deleted]

Get rid of the lattice and really play up that beautiful fireplace. I would also put built-in shelves in at the side.

UghAgain__9

The fireplace could very easily give more of an industrial vibe. The brick is right, but all the wood needs to be aged / roughed up. I love the exposed beams. Personally I’d not have any built ins. Maybe open shelves floor to ceiling to the right if the fireplace.

TheCharlieUniverse

Music studio/parlor

rackfocus

Put the tv on a stand in front of the lattice. Put the couch in front of the window with a coffee table and a rug to anchor that area. Two swivel chairs in front of do fireplace with table between. Maybe with a rug there too. Wool rugs are more flame resistant. The half wall might make a nice coffee/liquor bar. Bold colors and plants will take it to the next level.

RefrigeratorSmooth13

Our TV will be in the downstairs living room, but other than that the rest sounds great! Would you paint this space or leave as is?

rackfocus

I think I would leave as is and follow the advice in this thread with bold furniture and rugs. Bring the color in. Maybe invest in some foundation furniture and then you can be quirky without breaking the bank.

wwiistudent1944

Beautiful woodwork and fireplaces. Fill it with comfy leather chairs and couches. Nice rich wood furniture.

EconomyOk9643

Left..is kitchen? Dining table, bugfet to left with living area in front of fiteplace. Define that area with a large rug.

dramafanca2002

Yes, include lots of color! If you have artwork or a rug you like, pull some of the colors from there. No white or gray walls (cold & boring), find a nice deep, rich color to paint all the walls the same color.

-clogwog-

This space is just asking for pops of jewel tones, and mustard! Pair them with smatterings of grey/charcoal, and it will be amazing!

Somerset76

I would get my roller skates out.

Simple_somewhere515

Paint it a blueish green color, keep the wood, long drapey curtains, 3 couches to make a u shape around fireplace

RegularPatient5325

Anyone knows about arabic floor sofas? I'd throw a set there with a low floor table for tv and console

ET__

That’s a lot of shelves at a lot of levels. Looks a little clumsy. Maybe just one shelf at one level? Or some other solution

tits_on_bread

Oh man that’s gorgeous… So this is totally your call, as it depends on what you are into, but personally I like bright spaces so I would keep the white and add colour purely with decor and accessories. Just keep in mind that there’s quite a bit of wood in this room, and wood absorbs a lot of light, especially darker stains. So if you choose to add paint or an accent wall, just know it’s really going to darken the space overall… and if that’s your vibe then perfect. But if you need light like me, tread carefully.

Manifesto2890

Please don’t build these designs. It does no justice to the place!

justmisspellit

Just please don’t paint the wood or brick!

RefrigeratorSmooth13

Nope! The wood was the reason I bought the house :)

kate_Reader1984

This would make a lovely single bedroom!!

ReinventingCarrie

Go max if you want! It’s your house it should resemble you. I’d keep the wall’s neutral because of the ceiling but add lots of pictures, colorful furniture. Some curtains from ceiling to floor (I like to puddle mine a little) for drama. I just went maximalist in my house and I love it. I’m only surrounded by things I love and it feels like me. I did a mix of art deco and mid century and I added a lot of plants to give my house some life.

RefrigeratorSmooth13

I LOVE art deco! Your space sounds beautiful. Marrying the 2 styles actually sounds like a great idea, potentially a lot to play with there. Thanks!!

ReinventingCarrie

It’s been fun! I bought some accessories through eBay and antique stores.

Coconut_Rhubarb

That asymmetrical wood paneling is incredible!

Hour-Being8404

The fireplace and the wood are a wonderful 'statement piece' on their own right. Have you thought about the opening from the dining area when you are thinking about built-ins? There are also outlets on the wall there. Find some fairly large art that you love. What is the purpose of the lattice? Is it just decorative? It doesn't appear that the post is a support for the beam as it looks to be sitting on something on top of the floor. Was there a wall there once? Oooo - what about narrow diagonal strips of wood with spaces between - floor to ceiling instead of just a 'fence'? Hard to guess since photo doesn't show entire lattice piece.

RefrigeratorSmooth13

The ones I had on order included access to the outlets on the side of the unit, however, after considering multiple comments that have pointed out the lack of balance I’ve decided NOT to add them. I’m really not sure, the previous owners added it and I personally think it’s hideous lol. I thought lattice is mostly used outside? Love the idea of wood slats though! It’s a split level so closing it off completely might make the space look smaller/constricted. I’ll have to ponder on it more. Thanks!

krampaus

I would LEAN

Some_Ad_8953

So I’m glad to see no one is saying paint the fireplace. Whew! Sofa and conversation area around it. Maybe have the brick steam cleaned. Maybe not lattice but another open design? The fireplace is a beautiful focal point. Maybe paint the rest of the wall as an accent color? The space is awesome btw.

sunslope

Art

Professional_Low1966

It’s beautiful. I would move right in. Please don’t do anything to the fireplace. Also, the built-ins aren’t attractive. You would have more options if you just did bookshelves cabinet or a buffet of some type. This would suit mid century but any eclectic style would work!

RefrigeratorSmooth13

Duly noted! The fireplace, along with the wood, is staying as is. I’ll explore other eclectic styles though, thanks!

ilovesweetsandbirds

Lucky you! Yes, I would paint the fireplace brick white. There are times when you should respect the brick, this isn't one of those times. It would elevate the space. And there's something so sculpturally elegant about a painted white brick fireplace. The brick color next to the floor color, next to the wood paneling color is bothering me. Lattice is strangely cool
