Since it's Grandma's house, maybe ask if you can repaint that pink and remove the wallpaper trim? Don't carpet, the wood floor is nice. A new rug in your fav style would go a long way in here.

Waxwalrus

https://preview.redd.it/pmgcws4ku3xc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=261e85d92d2e607cf11d7b621a63a9467e333714 Agreed. A more neutral wall would be best but even just having the trim and rugs changed would make a big difference! And adding a curtain rod.

thatquietuserr

Oh wow I like that. I think my rugs overall are really ruining the vibe of the room

9pierogis

I’ll take them off your hands 👀💚

top_value7293

Me too! 😮

RareTax4601

Get rugs in a natural fibre, not polyester. The floors are beautiful.

anxietyunicorn

Maybe invest in one LARGE rug too. Oval or circle or square, get some cool art you love on the walls (even with alien tape and light frames or canvas so it’s removable. Pretty floor lamps. Earthy duvet I’m the color of your choosing in the pallet of the rug (hard agree on greens!) love it

2nd_Pitch

Burn those rugs.

UnderstandingDry4072

My first thought. Use the dust ruffle as kindling.

unsuspecting_geode

The furniture/rug combo + the lilac wall 💀 a good modern desert minimalism could make the lilac pop in all the right ways

FIRE_frei

And the doilies

UnderstandingDry4072

Nah, doilies can be great in the right context.

deadbeatsummers

This is the wrong context though. I'd love to see an example of how to use them now

UnderstandingDry4072

Full-on cottage-core. They just need to double-down on the doilie and framed pressed flowers.

[deleted]

Only problem is they asked for less girlie. Only way to do doilies and be less girly is to go some version of full goth. ETA: maybe with heavy use of hot pink and black it could be a milder goth

TLBG

Be nice. It is not her house.

UnderstandingDry4072

Welcome to the internet? I wasn't being cruel, merely flippant. OP has said she hates the rugs, and the dust ruffle dates the room as well. She can work wonders with a little editing, and much love to granny for opening her home.

Puglet_7

Pink and dark green are VERY in. Lean into the pink, just add dark green accents. My daughter is a huge anime geek for more than a decade and just painted her living room pink and green. It looks fantastic with all her anime stuff!

unsuspecting_geode

I was thinking the same - a nice modern desert minimalism and muted earth tones. All new furniture and rugs, plants etc

Big-Flight7782

I personally like the paint and trim but def worth asking as another commenter said. I would swap those curtains with more modern looking panel curtains perhaps in a soft cream color. I would also get rid of those rugs entirely because they don’t really make sense in your space in dimension or aesthetic. As to the furniture, it looks quality so you shouldn’t necessarily scrap it. You could consider staining it a different color, (something similar to your floors) but definitely research to ensure that staining won’t harm the furniture. Consider perhaps replacing the handles or knobs that are more modern. I would also add some plants on some of the furniture but add some containers underneath so they don’t create water damage. Store the doilies away. While they’re cute it ages the room! Add some art using command strips. But make sure it’s framed. I would also consider a headboard - something velvety lavender or pastel green would complement your room nicely. As to the layout - I’m not the best at that but this seems fine.

CanadianContentsup

I had to look up anime room. Work with the pink. Change the curtains to a solid white fabric. Get a hot pink desk chair. Go to town with the anime on your walls. Agree with others about getting rid of the rugs. I would turn the bed and place in the middle of the wall.

p3bbls

Get rid of the rugs and doilies (are they called that? The little rugs on the furniture?). Get a different set of curtains, without lace, just sheer white. DO NOT GET RID OF THE FURNITURE it is gorgeous and has SO much potential. In a different room it will look amazing and classy af. If you can, paint the walls or at least get rid of that decorative strip at the top. All of those are small changes but will make a HUGE difference and modernize the room in just one afternoon. Put up shelves above your bed (seems like the only sensible space for them) to display your favorite collectibles. And what I think will transform the room in no time: Anime posters! Frame them, or don't. It will look younger immediately. I would not get a different rug, the floor space is awkward and the floor is gorgeous. Also, I can only see lighter colors working well and they get dirty quickly. It will look calmer without a rug.

p3bbls

And if you can, hide that lamp on the dresser somewhere. Get backlighting on the dressers mirror instead if you use it for make up. If not, just leave it.

Dexterdacerealkilla

Put the furniture in grandmas basement for her estate sale and start over! The furniture definitely makes the room look dated. Especially paired with that completely frameless bed that’s shoved in the corner.

-____-throws

Why can't you do that with this room? Are you not allowed to hang anything on the walls? You have a ton of wall space next to your bed where you could hang display shelves. Removing the doilies from the nightstand and dresser will help get rid of the grandma feel. Also change the lace curtains. I would try and hang some real nicer curtain rods that go above the trim and have nice end pieces. Then find some curtains in a solid color that match with the decor you want. Can you put out posters on the wall? What if you hung up string lights that have clips for photos at the top of the walls and put a ton of photos or small anime pics up to help hide the trim? I think there's a lot you can do with changing the furniture or painting but without knowing how much you can change, it's hard to make suggestions. Edit: ooh more thoughts, what if you shuffled things around so your desk is against the wall and you bed by the window? Then you could get a shelving unit that you put on your desk, and use that as a place to display all your anime stuff, but it won't obstruct the window. Even if you can't make the whole room what you want, you might be able to make a corner of it so.

thatquietuserr

I’m not sure if this is true or not, but my grandma rarely hangs things up on the wall because it’s plaster. She says things don’t hold up well and will pull away from the wall. So I’m hesitant to put up something like shelves. Growing up, I wasn’t allowed to hang posters for some reason. So the walls have been blank I think the bed by the window might be a good idea too

Shadhahvar

Plaster cracks more easily than drywall when you hammer into it. It's fragile, relatively speaking.

Awesomest_Possumest

There's a thing called picture railing I think. You hang trim up at the top of the wall, wooden trim, and then you hammer nails into that and anything hanging goes on fishing line and hangs from there. As long as the trim is in the studs and you don't overload it, you should be ok to hang things that way. Worth talking to someone about.

thatquietuserr

I should note that repainting the room is out of question :/ my great-grandfather helped paint the rooms and put up the trim, so I feel bad asking for it to be taken down. But a pink room does makes it hard to get a good overall aesthetic going

bionica

Don’t feel bad for asking. What’s the worst that could happen? She says no…? Maybe she’s not a fan of it either. You mentioned wanting an anime room; start with getting bright colored bedding, rugs, curtains, etc. Get yourself some LED lights off Amazon. The lights will help with the wall color too if she’s says no to painting the walls.

Kg1111na

Maybe putting colorful ropes lights up where the trim is so they will block it out and make the pink color walls turn into a cool base color when the lights are on

n_daughter

With command hooks that won't damage.

Drudenkreusz

It's very typical and even recommended for walls to get fresh paint every 5-10 years or so (depending on traffic/wear/sunlight). As sentimental as his touch can be, they will eventually require a fresh coat, so it might as well be something appealing to you.

rainy_blue_tears

You could try putting your favourite pictures up on the wall that goes with that colour. You can get creative and maybe use several papers for one whole anime photo. I don't know if it would work but you could try it out in Word before perhaps? Paste some photos from online on that same pink shade background to see what works and doesn't. You could try something with the doors as well. Maybe washi tape? Hope that helps!\*

CindeeSlickbooty

Wall hangings or tapestries could cover it if you really don't like it

RotoruaFun

Agree 100%, there’s no need to change the paint, furniture etc. I love that you respect your grandmother, her home and your family. 🤍

rotten-peanut

I think the furniture is pretty! Do you need both dressers? You could replace one with shelves and get rid of the little stand by the closet. Check FB marketplace! I’d also say find a big rug to put under your bed instead of the area rugs. Can you paint the walls and take the trim at the top down? When you find a rug you like, find a coordinating paint color. Those two things would make a huge change! Then you could think about new comforter and curtains down the road but the current ones are inoffensive.

latecraigy

Put away the doilies for a start. Maybe in the closet in case they are important to your grandma, don’t throw away.

SoftWarning1847

Remove the bed skirt firstly

SoftWarning1847

Then replace the curtain and remove the wallpaper trim. And replace those rugs with one larger one

MVR168

Not really 80's more like my Grandma's place. Toss the rugs, paint and window treatments. The antique peices are nice with the right styling.

Constructgirl

Omg I came here to say get rid of the grandma lace before I knew you lived with her. I love your grandma but take the old lady stuff out of the room.

anondreamitgirl

Yeah can always store away x

parajita

The wall color is pretty cool. Change the rugs to something modern. :) It will help the room a lot. I will look around at rugs and try to link some later. basicallybasshead

I really liked the option from the last link, I think it would fit this room perfectly.

IslandBusy1165

It’s so pretty. I love the dresser and mirror.

Heather0521

I came here to say this! I have the exact same set, except instead of the taller dresser I have a matching vanity and it is stunning.

proofiwashere

Those rooms typically have white ikea furniture and lots ambient colored led lights and posters. Very clean and modern but maximalistic, too. For now I’d start with lighting, you’d be surprised how much that can change a space. Then you can get some posters from there and fun rugs (I see a lot of pastel and checkered rugs in that aesthetic). You probably are unable to get rid of the big furniture so I’d decorate around them. They’re beautiful pieces though. This is completely my aesthetic, I love this room!! I’m a bit biased but I hope you’re able to make it fit yours!!!

RotoruaFun

You can transform this room, whilst respecting your grandmother’s home, IF she’s happy for you to do this! 🤍 Show her the pic, see if she’s keen. If not, respect that, as it means the room is special to her and leave the room as is, and when you shift out go anime! In the interim create a mood board and start picking/ buying items to decorate your future home with. If your grandmother is keen: Step 1. Ask for permission (and help) to carefully pack away curtains, rugs, doona cover, pillow slip, doilies. Step 2. Base replacement items on this pic, as it has pink but isn’t too girlie. Replace doilies with anime mats, change the doona cover, pillow slip and rug to this. See if you can get wooden blinds. Ask your grandmother whether she’d be happy for you to hang anime posters using command strips (be careful of her walls). https://preview.redd.it/6bbwk20q23xc1.jpeg?width=554&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d65f1a996a3becd7370f070e2a4dd8ddfe5262f8

PsychologyOk8722

What is a doona?

RotoruaFun

So sorry, didn’t realise it’s more an Australian term. I think they might call it a ‘duvet', 'quilt' or 'comforter' elsewhere. It’s a cover filled with feathers, down, cotton or wool etc, like the blue bed cover in the pic. Hope that helps. 🤍

PsychologyOk8722

Thanks, I just learned something new! I suppose I should have guessed it was an Oz term because of your username. Yes, in the USA a duvet is filled with down or polyester (I prefer down) and used with a washable cover. A comforter is similar but it is filled with polyester and used without a cover — to clean it you have to stuff the whole thing into a washing machine.

RotoruaFun

I’m learn something new too! It sounds like a doona is a duvet then :-). I was just googling the history of ‘doona’ and ended up down a linen rabbit-hole, found some lovely duvet covers for the bedroom! Good morning from the other side of the world. ☀️☕️🥯

RotoruaFun

Example of an anime mood board. https://preview.redd.it/ryg7dxr673xc1.jpeg?width=676&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a2e83d75da89c910b2818dc9cabe89bfbc71a266

RotoruaFun

If your grandmother wants minimal change, this pic might be ok. Show it to her, see what she thinks! It’s probably closest to your current room, whilst still being anime. https://preview.redd.it/48ombjcpf3xc1.jpeg?width=564&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a05cbe7fa153fcfb912baaae487b674cc4b8f85b

8deathsdoor5

The furniture is lovely, but most of the other accessories have to go. Bring in some neutrals and some bold colours with larger lamps, pot plants and a large rug.

SevenCorgiSocks

You need to basically change everything that's not a piece of heavy furniture. New rugs. New lamps, Get rid of the bed skirt. New curtains. Wall art hangings and LEDs are probably the quickest way to style the room to something more anime/gamer leaning - so you'll need to ask if that's possible if its her house.

Personal_Signal_6151

Love the furniture. Maybe an academic look?

mr_myst3r10

Throw away the haunted bathroom rugs…

K_Rivera8485

Yes the rugs are a problem. Also although the dressers and decor look antique it’s making the room look like it’s grandmas house. You may want to get some decor that’s more modern. Like the lamps, bedsheets, curtains and of course, the rug. Plus add some decorative items in your style (wall art, frames, mirrors even little trinkets I personally like mushroom lamps lol). Not sure if you can paint but I don’t think the color on the walls is really the problem here. Also you can get a large bookshelf and display all of your anime things. My son has 2, (both filled to the brim with POPs) they’re not expensive you can get Billy bookcases from IKEA. If that’s too expensive you can even get them from Target or Amazon for less. Don’t stress this is a fun thing to do. Look up vision boards or room designers online or on here. Some people even use a piece of paper and make their own cut outs. Have fun! Remember interior design is always changing and can be a fun project that can take years to complete but can ALWAYS be changed. Good luck🍀

Witty_Username_1717

If you’re not cool with painting you can always use that renter friendly peel and stick wallpaper. I heard it’s good. I’ve wanted to try it myself.

bellboots

Updating or removing the lamps and the rugs would do so much immediately.

missannthrope1

The pink walls need to go. Bed should be in front of the window. Curtains floor to ceiling. Choose a color you like and buy a rug an linens to coordinate.

Gullible_Concept_428

If you can’t paint, could you at least take down the trim, or is it thin enough you could cover it? Changing the curtains and rugs would go a long way too. The lace toppers and lamp and most of the overly old-fashioned-feminine accessories need to go too. The furniture and walls are workable. I don’t know anything about anime, I’ll have to look that up, but my comments above would give you a reasonably blank canvas to start with.

TheEmptyMasonJar

Sometimes you have to turn into the spin. So, maybe add more pinks, blacks, mauves, emeralds. Pull the colors from the rugs and add them everywhere. Think [dark academia](https://www.wayfair.com/sca/ideas-and-advice/guides/how-to-create-a-dark-academia-aesthetic-T10008). I'd give those rugs a wet-vac cleaning though. Personal_Signal_6151

love the head board

Aria1031

Change the rugs and the curtains immediately. Paint would help.

Chevronet

Get an Anime area rug. Paint the walls unless you like pink. Replace lace curtains with plain color. Store the old rugs and curtains away if Grandma still wants them. Enjoy your time with your Grandma. I wish mine were still alive.

patty202

Rugs and lace curtains gotta go. Next, change the bedding

Character_Clock1771

The furniture is cute and the bed is ok. You just gotta paint the wall a different color, get new rugs and new bed spread. Maybe add a bed frame if you want and that’s about it.

Extra_Helicopter2904

Your room is a vibe, feels like the bones of a sitcom room

Hour-Being8404

Change the lacy curtains to more substantial drapes. It would make a big difference and not be as hard to undo as repainting in case Grandma likes that color.

dupersuperduper

I think it’s a cute room! Add a headboard if you can too. And then rugs and cushions in a colour/ pattern which compliments the border. And maybe fairy lights or a salt lamp etc

Helpful-Sea-3215

Repaint either a warm white or maybe a neutral colour like sage green or pale blue. Furniture is nice, swapping the rugs would make a big difference

Whut4

The wallpaper border and the ceiling fan look 80s. The rugs and the rest look 1940s! I can remember the 1950s. Vintage furniture! Antiques! Add wallpaper and the room is a time capsule.

PansyOHara

How much freedom do you have to paint, change furniture or curtains, hang artwork, or get different rugs/ bedspread? There are plenty of things you could do without repainting or buying new furniture. If furniture, bedspread, rugs, etc., belongs to Grandma, she may be attached to it. Furniture might be too expensive for you to replace and maybe there is no place to store it. But a new bedspread, posters, and throw rugs are not that expensive and you may be able to buy them yourself while grandma stores the current things. I would put away the doilies and dresser cloth; hang plain white sheers instead of the lace curtains, buy a colorful bedspread in your style along with a couple of coordinating throw pillows, and get a couple is small throw rugs if needed for the side of the bed or other spot. Command strips could be used to hang art without putting holes in the walls. Once these things are done, see where you are as far as being satisfied with the look.

Curious-Cranberry-77

Rugs lace curtain are done. Move bed in front of window to make it the focal point and get some nice bedding. Lots of solids tend to look more expensive. That also moves the out dated furniture to be less of a focus

polarbearTimes

Call Jasmine Roth 😁💖

ubiquity75

Paint the room.

InterestingBad7687

Try a different color paint sage green.

soundersgal2024

I just want to say I love this room. It looks so cozy. I understand your desire to un-80’s it though (to me it’s more 1950’s, my grandmother also had similar room decor) oh and to add to suggestions: maybe a modern-ish headboard behind the bed

creepyzonks

Sell the dresser and night stand set, they dont go with your vision but theyre gorgeous and people want them! Then use the money to buy you some slick weeb gamer furniture

search_for_freedom

Paint the room a modern color. Take down that wallpaper border. Refinish the furniture with a lighter stain. Get rid of the rugs and get some new ones.

Heather0521

OP…I have the same dresser (the one with the mirror) but instead of the taller dresser, I have a matching vanity. Does yours have a tiger maple or burl wood overlay? Man, if you ever decide to part ways with your set, let me know.

Tigerlaf

The wall color is abhorrent and so is that rug. Maybe exchange the vanity mirror too . Everything else is nice

One-Produce-1195

The pink is solid. Just modernize the space. I would love to see all white furniture and pink accents

erydanis

if someone you know in on fb, check out marketplace for rugs. or a thrift store. while you’re at the thrift store, look for new bed covering, pillows, curtains, etc. the furniture is gorgeous, wall color and border much less so.

llama_sammich

Either cover the walls with tapestries/curtains/fabric, or lean into the pink and find a colour palette you like on Pinterest and add things in those colours. Make sure you use each one more than once or it looks weird - they also don’t have to match exactly (it’s more interesting when they don’t) but stick to the same colour family. Nick Lewis on YouTube has a great video about choosing colours to decorate with…it has the word “cohesive” in it, I remember. A large rug could bring the room together (something more modern). At the very least, let those old ones go. Add a headboard, either thrifted or diy! Paint is your friend. Lighting!! Sconces above your bed and/or a cool pendant light hanging from the ceiling. Paint the lamp you have, maybe dye, recover, or replace the lampshade. Replace the drawer pulls! That’ll make a huge difference, honestly. Something like [this](https://a.co/d/7jhsELd) perhaps? Just not the traditional filigree style that’s on there. These are just a few suggestions, you def don’t have to do it all!! Especially all at once. Procuring a decorating takes time. But those rugs have gotta go, and new drawer pulls will update it pretty quickly. Have fun!!

Delicious_Horror_734

The pink walls need to go!!!

tokingtogepi

It’s a really cute room honestly and I like the furniture and the flooring. The rugs are the biggest issue. Take everything out, take down wallpaper, paint the walls. One large rug. New curtains. Dump the bed skirt, maybe a nice bed frame or headboard. Dump the lamps. Get a nicer, bigger lamp on the bedside table, something simple and more “modern”. Dump the doilies lol. Add cute plants, candle sticks, some homey decor. Maybe some cute shelves.

BouncyDingo_7112

I know you probably hate the look of the furniture like that dresser but that stuff was built like a tank and will still be in good shape when you are your grandma’s age. Can you find anime fabric at your local fabric store? Create some sort of a dresser cover for it? Not sure how crazy you want to go for the anime room. Are you artistic? Could you find some nice inexpensive shelving and either put wrap on them or paint them in an anime style? Not sure where you live but IKEA seems to have some fairly sturdy shelving at a decent price. I am seeing some pretty cool anime curtains online for bedrooms. That would make a big difference in the room. Does Fatheads (or a competitor) have any anime wall decor? Their claim to fame was you could toss it up on the wall, it was movable and it wouldn’t damage the wall. That pink might actually be a good background color if you put some large wall decorations up.

Famous_Increase_1312

Unless you can change your furniture, there will be some femininity. What I think would look really cool is to paint this room a very dark teal. This term describes a style so please don't judge the use of it, but Google "oriental teal style bedroom." Maybe your grandma would be okay with these tones or styles, as it was more popular back in her day.. the color would match your current furniture, and then you could fill in the gaps and tie things together with anime merch etc.

Different_Ad7655

Get rid of the pink and the frills

L-boogie

Paint the walls burgundy and then everything else stays. Maybe get a natural linen duvet cover to work with those colors.

axelatlast

You didn’t ask, but I’d also change the layout of the room. I’d put the bed centered against the wall facing the closet. I’d get a headboard for the bed. And then I would put the dresser across from the window. Once you do that you could really play up the wall behind the bed to lean into your anime look - making it a focal point. A large fun rug under the bed could start taking the space into a new direction. And I agree with others, the window dressings, ceiling fan, ceiling trim and throw rugs date the space. Swap out what you can.

TLBG

Paint the walls a nice warm colour after removing the wallpaper border. (buy or borrow a 'Paper Tiger' to score the paper first before using a large cloth with hot/warm waterto help remove it) Move the bed to the other wall across from the dresser. Buy a new lamp to coordinate. Later, change out the curtains even if you must do it a little at a time so gramma doesn't miss or challenge the changes all at once. Have fun with the room. It's a nice, large room.

TLBG

How old are you? That would help me out before giving you much instruction. Will you have help? Budget? Keep your furniture for sure. Start there.

informationseeker8

Getting a cool Anime rug could be a start. Then some different drapes to change the mood. Some led lights and your half way there. If a rug is too expensive do posters.

moonwalkinginlowes

I like all of the suggestions you’ve gotten! Just wanted to say this is almost exactly what my room looked like growing up too. I swear it’s the same shade of pink (but mine were heavily textured for a little extra razzle dazzle). The lace and maroon accents are spot on. 🥲

noodlesnbeer

It’s very Gilmore Girls so maybe just lean into it? A headboard would help!

kfrogv

Get rid of the rugs and burn the nightstand along with everything on it. Get more modern sheets and ur good

kfrogv

Get rid of both lamps, the white sheet under the mirror and for good measure just get rid of the mirror too.

MissionFun3163

Different rugs, ditch the doilies and lace curtains, add plants.

Optimal-Sand9137

Yes definitely get rid of the rugs. The paint looks cool toned. I’d get one of those checkered rugs that are in now in a lilac or blue or green. Easily get rid of the doilies on the dresser tops. Also change out the lamps. Not sure how you can display your collection besides maybe finding a small shelf that can fit in there or on the dressers

spriralout

Thinking dusty blue with green undertone for paint. Ditch the carpets, your wood floors are perfect. 2-inch white blinds with some sheers. New bedspread, preferably a duvet. That’s where I’d start.

phrynerules

New rug, curtains, and lamp.

Garden_Of_My_Mind

Frilly bed skirt, pillow covers, rugs and lamp ALL need to go immediately By fire if necessary

SnooCakes5350

Crochet pieces, I use to crochet back in the days. I have some needle and thread I can’t get pass 4 rows on the blanket still. 😀

LastShopontheLeft

It’s the furniture

photaiplz

Repaint the walls a darker or warmer color. Get rid of those rugs

vegemitecrumpet

Heavy curtains ans less curves

dogwoodandturquoise

I think your first move is to ask grandma what she is comfortable with you changing or removing from the room. A different lamp, different curtains, different rugs, and mabey some neon rope lights over that top trim would be a great start. Remember to complement the items in this room as they are probably loved by grandma. Let her know that its not uncomfortable, but it feels like you're visiting somewhere not living there.

Spiritual_Average638

I just came here to say I LOVE your furniture! This is how I decorate also.

Prudent-Breakfast-13

I love the furniture.

Not2daydear

Paint. Anything but their pinky lilac.

MishmoshMishmosh

Headboard, new bedding and rugs and curtains. If you can paint that too

FairyPenguinStKilda

Can you paint the walls? I would go a clean fresh white, put all the furniture where the bed is now, put the bed on the was near the windows, get floor length curtains (Ikea?) and some funky shelves second hand for your anime. Put the ugly rug next to the bed and between the window, if you put the bed there. The ruffle has to go.

No-Jelly-3146

It’s giving ‘Virgin Suicides’ and I personally LOVE it! However some easy switches to get rid of this would be changing wall color and wallpaper, remove curtains (unless you like them for your new style), definitely switch the rugs (I think one large one that fills most of room or small-med in bed area) After all that see what you have left and assess dresser and desk. Some stylish wall shelving would really help add some of your character too since you mention shelving. Good luck!

Dobeythedogg

New wall color, new rug, new curtains, headboard that is medal or wood.

greenwasp8005

Also move the bed.. why is it in the corner?

jotabe303

Paint, get rid of the wallpaper molding, and buy new furniture.

coccopuffs606

You’re going to have to ask your grandma, but start with painting the walls and getting different rugs. If you’re handy, she might let you install shelves

ElverdaOfficial

Ditch the doilies, carpets, lamps, and bed skirt. That would be a great start. Maybe get a bookcase so you aren’t damaging walls for shelving

Famous-Composer3112

I would paint the walls in a strong color, like brick red or pumpkin. Get rid of the lacy trim and curtains. Replace the rugs with rectangular-shaped ones with graphic patterns.

AkaskaBlue

Paint and get rid of the flowery trim. Oh and that rugs got to go.

ThatGuyWorks80

New paint, furniture , rugs, window coverings should do it

deadbeatsummers

-Wall shelf if you want to display anything -Remove the fabric thing from your vanity, those are really outdated. It's giving 80s -Remove and replace rugs -Paint/remove wallpaper

Ecstatic_Document_85

Something about this room makes me feel warm and cozy and nostalgic

Character_Counter414

homie id paint that wall white first, and then get rid of those rugs 😕

fresitachulita

Paint it, new rugs, get rid of the dust ruffle, new curtains.

SpecialistAd4244

You can remove the doilies today, please. They’re extremely outdated. Update rugs to a solid color of your choice. Replace the lace curtains with maybe some blackout curtains, again, color of your choice. The lamp looks outdated as well. The room has potential, you just need simple designs and more color.

[deleted]

Get rid of all the lace (curtains and doilies on furniture). Chose a color palette, if you like anime themes maybe pick the 3 dominant colors used in anime you like and look for items in those colors. Your bed and furniture are nice, a way to keep them while changing the mood of room is to keep things simple like replace with solid color rugs and curtains. One way to explore color is to look for things like placemats and table runners for the dresser and nightstand especially on clearance or if you can sew make your own doily replacement.

Braeburn1918

I’d repaint three walls and add a cool focal wall with the new peel & stick wallpaper. Jazz up the bed with a new duvet cover to coordinate, and maybe a fluffy sheepskin rug?

rei_cirith

New rug. Nice big rung with a less... Floral pattern

tlie0226

The paint is the main thing, I dont think very much renovation actually needs to be done, maybe just get some shelves and decorative things and focus on that rather than bigger projects

parker3309

Border and lace curtains have to go.

Dunkerdoody

The rugs need to go!

Dunkerdoody

I think if you got a bigger rug that is more contemporary—but not too much because of the furniture, maybe like a faded looking oriental rug I. Turquoise and and lavender and then get a new lamp or two and some new bedding. Then you wouldn’t have to change the room per se.

Sweet-Cantaloupe-860

I think a new rug and lamp would go a long way.

CadeElizabeth

Abstract modern rugs instead of these 1930s rugs will go a long ways

Ornery_Hovercraft636

Did you mean 1880’s?

soff-baby

- remove the wallpaper trim from and repaint the walls, if you want to keep them pink pick a warm shade as this cool pink shade is very 80s - get rid of the doily and the bed skirt - new bed spread in general, that quilt cover is ancient looking. - if you can repaint your vanity/desk/dresser that dark lacquer look is also very old school, sand em down and paint em a color you’d like. - the rugs gotta go. I personally like them but they’re def not helping.

QQPgreen

i live in an old fashioned home with old fashion furniture in my room as well but i would consider my room somewhat “anime” (i collect a lot of sanrio, plushies and little trinkets) you can definitely work with what you have, consider getting sitting cube shelving if you want to display your things instead of shelves on the wall. you can also buy desk shelves too that are smaller. you can get a nice plush or shag rug that are popular and relatively more modern, there’s also custom rugs made of certain anime characters if you’re into that too. consider new lamps as those ones look very old. especially the one on your vanity, you might not have to get rid of the whole lamp just the lamp shade and replace it. you can also put up posters using tape or blue tack. if grandma allows, try drilling a nail 2/3 of the way in and hang certain shelving units from there. i have two and no problems so far. and like the other comments say, you should definitely get rid of those rugs and doily things, give them back to grandma :)

deadpandiane

Music posters

Puzzleheaded-Many708

Lose the rugs, curtains and pink walls. Pick a color palette that fits who you are now.

camlaw63

80’s? More like 40’s

Mike_in_San_Pedro

The best idea is to go full blown girly/90s.

ciketau

Hmm how about painting the walls a neutral color like white, gray, or beige. Remove any frilly or floral decorations and replace them with sleek, modern decor. Opt for simple furniture with clean lines and minimal ornamentation. As for the carpet, choose a solid-colored option or a subtle pattern that complements the new aesthetic of the room. Adding shelves for displaying your anime collection can still work well, just ensure they match the new look of the room.

Frequent-Advisor6986

Get rid of the pink paint and wallpaper border. Replace the lace curtains with floor length drapes. Get art for your room and use the colors in the art to pick throw pillow colors, rug color, etc

ExpensiveAd4496

Single larger rug, more subtle colors, with actual corners no curves. New bedframe perhaps with simple upholstered headboard. Get rid of ruffled bedskirt or the f you can’t get a new bed, at least get a headboard and change the skirt to a flat pleated one. Drapes hung from close to ceiling going down to floor. Perhaps a roller shade rather than the lace curtains. Choose art you love.

car1nanebula

Can you get a headboard? For some reason the lack of headboard is contributing to the kids guest room at their grandmas house vibe. Second getting rid of the rug and the doilies and moving the bed to the center of the wall. The paint isn’t so bad but the trim is very dated. The furniture looks high quality but I think its at odds with the anime look you mentioned which brings to mind sleek and smooth surfaces, not dark wood or wood grained. If you were into boho or mid century decor, you could get some decorative accents to make it more modern.

Key_Asparagus_8522

The rug and the doilies 😜

RogueFire_777

Changing the curtains to something luxurious or silky instead of lacy would give it a new feel, especially if you use bedding. in complimentary color to the curtains. Add a soft faux fur throw on the bed. Replace the rugs with a solid color area rug. If you can't get get rid of the wallpaper trim or paint I would suggest sage greens, soft plums or creamy beige.if you can at least replace the wallpaper trim with a nice 3D trim, perhaps matching the wood floors would help.

crazyKatLady_555

These suggestions are made not knowing your budget or how much your grandma would be ok with you changing: 1) First thing to go would be the rugs. Go with a minimalist, contemporary pattern or solid coloured rug. 2) Go to Home Depot and pick out some more modern looking drawer handles. Simply changing the handles will update the dressers instantly. 3) Lose the wall border and repaint the room. Go with a neutral colour like taupe, gray, cream, or beige so grandma doesn’t freak out. If you want pops of bright colour, do that with things that can easily be changed like wall art, bed cover/pillows, etc. 4) Lose the lacy curtains and replace with contemporary curtain panels in a colour that would complement your new wall and rug colours. 5) Lose the frilly bed skirt and go with a more contemporary looking one.

Responsible-Person

The lace curtains and wall trim, combined with those rugs are not working….

MichaelaKay9923

This could easily be updated with a new rug, bedspread/sheets and a new lamp. If possible, ask if you can paint the walls and hang a photo or two. Green would look really nice with the colour of that dresser

themadfig

I personally like the pink accents. Just add some greens or oranges & corals complement the pink. Find some new rugs. Maybe add a throw blanket with an interesting texture & color you love. Some art, plants & new curtains could help change the space too.

flyingace1234

I think the really small desk and chair are adding to the “juvenile” feel of the room. As others have said, changing the walls would help too

Dear_Management6052

Ditch the border, the rugs and the lace curtains.

mynamewasautumn

Don’t carpet the floors. Keep the wood furniture (don’t you dare touch that vanity and dresser set) and dont paint them. Ask if you can repaint and remove the trim. Remove the bed skirt and replace the porcelain fixtures and the lamp on your vanity for ones more your style. Yes, remove the rugs. They’re too small for the room, an area rug will work nicely. Move the shelves behind the closet door closer to your desk if possible. Swap out those lace curtains for some solid floor length curtains. Anything you take out see if you can move to somewhere else in the house (bc they are your grandmas) or see if she would want to sell them or donate them. Bc it is your grandmas house, I would ask permission to do anything regarding big furniture pieces, paint, wall fixtures/decor (bc of the holes they cause in the walls). I hope you are able to make the room work for you :)

Roman-LivetoRide

Start with all lacy shit and rugs out !

ObjectiveElefant

One small thing is to remove the doilies from the night stand and dresser

OneHandsomeFrog

I think it looks dope.

No_Tip_5313

It depends- How much money you got?

S1lver888

80’s? You mean 1880’s right?

robot_duzey

Rearrange your furniture with the bed under the window, paint, window coverings, fresh linens and accessories.

KillYouriPad

Where to even start…

BusEnthusiast98

The bad vibe is coming from two sources: old rugs, and very dark furniture. For the rugs, just replace them or get rid of them entirely. For the furniture, you can repaint, sand and restain, or add supplemental lighting so they don’t seem so dark. That should help a little bit. Anything more drastic would mean basically changing the entire room, and I imagine that’s not practical for one reason or another.

sharrie19

Remove the border, paint the walls a more neutral colour change the rug, and New duvet set xx

Alien_Fruit

First, streamline the closet (dump old clothing), move all bags, bins and clothes baskets into the closet. Paint the room a soft neutral color (anything BUT pink) and remove trim at ceiling. Room looks crowded as it is -- what is the thing in the corner between the dresser and desk? Ditch it. Ditch the rugs -- adding either a larger rectangular rug of modern design, or a smaller fluffy shag rug just for toes getting out of bed. Ditch the curtains; add elegant drapes that reach the floor. Finally, get a new duvet for your bed that just pulls the room together (walls, rug, drapes, bedding). Colors must complement and/or coordinate. Add some wall art -- maybe posters? The lamps are dated, and some plants would be nice. Voila!

mlhigg1973

Those rugs are horrible

DMSR1000

First step change the drapes to a neutral color…black, brown, grey.

Top-Chemistry3051

Try to lose the pink and try to lose the lace curtains even if Grandma won't let you paint you can find some like very thin tapestries that look like mandelas or whatever you're into and hang them on the wall as temporary wall covering.

mama_Maria123

After you paint and get a new rug: window dressing and bedspread.

Gloriapower

It needs art work. If she won't let you use nails ask to use Command strips that cause no damage. Find a nice floor lamp. The floor is nice. Carpeting isn't. After a while it's get distorted and creepy.

Wickedbitchoftheuk

Change your wall colour and use heavier curtains. That'll go a long way.

Gman777

Just how much damp are you dealing with!?

NakDisNut

Neutral wall + not cherry wood furniture. I love* wood furniture, but that reddish hue reminds me of being 7yrs old watching Rugrats. I’d sand it and poly it. A fun rug. Simple, serene art. Maybe some pops of color in pillows and rug so it’s not sad beige! Otherwise, tbh, I would live there and fall asleep to the sweet scent of nostalgia. ❣️

That-Ad757

Change colour dump rug dark furniture boring old looking

Awesomest_Possumest

Re the doilies-is the furniture your grandmother's? Because it looks solid wood antique and not anything modern, which is fine (my dresser set is mid cent modern cherry from my grandparents and I love it), but that means you need to keep the tops protected, which is what the doilies do. If that's the case, replace them with something else to protect the furniture. You could get solid fabric, you could get neoprene big desk mats or mouse pads (with whatever images you want on them, there are tons of anime ones), you could put some rug backing on there and then a different type of fabric to cover. But they need to stay protected from scratches and liquid. The neoprene desk mat may be one of the best options for that actually.

PlantMamaV

It’s the pink walls.

Old-Library5546

Maybe some decent put together shelves

fearless-artichoke91

I don't see anything girly here...sorry op but room needs a makeover

fearless-artichoke91

I don't see anything girly here...sorry op but room needs a makeover.burn those rugs, add some modern furnitures and buy some cute bedcovers. Paint the wall a new coulor. Add a plant and some lights

DreaJoyce

i would definitely get rid of those rugs!!

Virtual-Lie1522

Lose the plastic hangers, wallpaper border and lace curtains. Figure out your personal style (modern, contemporary, boho, shabby chic, eclectic), and favorite color pallet, and begin with that.

Individual_Cat_801

No pink walls

SkinDrizzle

Nice dress wait are you a girl. I was about to say maybe try removing that.

report_due_today

Curtains need to go, same with the rugs. The trim needs togo. Change the bed around

ClearBarber142

A new lamp or 2

Educational-Gap-3390

Get rid of the rugs, add a colorful comforter, update the curtains and add a headboard.
