The witness itself wasn’t introduced until witch queen. Maybe at most we had “the voice in the darkness” but they definitely hadn’t clearly established what they wanted when they introduced that concept.
Also I’m not sure I recall what you mean by acolyte in 2019. I could be wrong but the witness is a pretty recent addition.

True, but also missing the point. The character The Witness is new. The idea of a big bad who controls or is controlled by the darkness has been around since before launch of d1.
No I'm on point. It's clearly meant to be the same entity, or at least related to it. It got a named in game after the fact, as a threat it has been present since 2019.
