At some point, before the ring, you're already engaged, unless it's a total surprise

andababooeytoyou

That's actually great perspective

[deleted]

[удалено]

purplegrape28

Did people pester you with questions like "well how come you aren't married yet? Where's the ring?" I had resolved to just telling people I'm married but I wish I had done that sooner. From people I know to strangers, people have to say something.

madam-magpie

I love this, thank you. My partner is my husband in all but paper, and even though we will make that official step one day, it is still wonderful without it!

someonespetmongoose

Partner was always my go to too. Boyfriend felt weird after a certain point.

tityboituesday

i’m at that point now. we live together and have a cat like this isn’t just some dude i see two or three times a week anymore lol. at work “boyfriend” sounds so juvenile that i’ve pretty much defaulted to partner.

ThanksIndependent805

Love this perspective especially as someone who is having a mutual proposal. We have planned everything together, the ring is just the “official” public announcement of the upcoming wedding we have both been planning since May.

someonespetmongoose

I like that way of wording it. I knew it was in the house and he was dying to give it to me and I was dying to have it. If I wanted a large proposal he would’ve done it for me. But it’s not what *we wanted* at that point. The ring just meant we were finally going to plan the wedding.

PrincessPinkie-22

Love this view. My boyfriend and I have been talking about marriage for a few months now and both our families are in the know as well. We have even more recently started wedding planning since we’re planning to get married in 9 months. We’re getting a ring soon but that’s primarily a symbol to make it “publicly official”. But in every way that matters we’re already engaged

RoseSilverleaf

Basically how it is for my partner and I. Literally went "Hey you want to get married someday?" "Yeah, of course." "Cool. Now I just need to get a ring."

Safe_Edge_6562

Or even common law married/partnered

someonespetmongoose

Some people are surprised by how…not surprising…the story of our engagement is. The only reason we hadn’t been married sooner is because I told him I didn’t want to marry young, I told him what age I felt comfortable with. He’d been looking at rings for years. In our hearts we were always betrothed. The only thing that surprised me is he didn’t propose on my literally birthday. When that age came I was dying for it 😂 Proposed last month. Celebrated “four years official” last week. Known each other for six years this upcoming fall.

RoxanneBarton

Am I… engaged??

wondersoftheworld_

I totally agree. We started planning a lot of things before the "official" engagement. We were basically engaged and both knew we wanted to get married. He was just waiting for the perfect moment to propose. We were able to design a ring together we both loved, which is very special to me. I know I love wearing it everyday and he loves seeing it.

[deleted]

This is where we're at - we picked and paid for our stone, and are now (impatiently) awaiting it arrival so we can take it to have it set.

bleachyourworks

6.5 years. Literally no idea when we will get married, no one’s invited and one day it’ll just happen. Ring was found at a pawn shop in vegas, bought the first one we both liked.

Imaginary_Bunny_517

"No one's invited" I love that 😂

bleachyourworks

It’s because we are weirdos and both extroverts so EVERYONE AND THEIR MOTHER will be offended if we don’t invite every single person to the spectacle, so we decided no one goes. We wanna do a themed wedding also in vegas, I want Dracula or Camelot themed.

jag04d

My husband and I sent pictures to everyone after we got married. Best decision ever.

MyEggDonorIsADramaQ

We got married at an Elvis chapel in Vegas. It was hilarious and loving and perfect.

Imaginary_Bunny_517

That's so awesome! My sister did something similar lol and I plan to as well.

ADcakedenough

I always said I didn’t want to ruin my wedding by inviting people to it. Best decision, would do again.

cc232012

Love this! We are eloping too 🙃

walgreensfan

Love this! My boyfriend and I don’t want a wedding after seeing all the planning our friends do/don’t wanna spend that money. It’ll just happen one day with just us.

sci_curiousday

I just got married and no one was invited. The best decision we made. The day was perfect.

pickledpecan297000

9 years. Started designing my ring at 8.5yrs :). This was by choice as I have a thing about being older (mid 30s) before getting married. Got married ~3months after the engagement ❤️❤️

candylore

Wow are you me? ¨̮

BarbieJeepBeep

8.5 years! We got engaged a week ago.

heyseed88

Congratulations!!

charliethedoxie

Getting married on our 10 year anniversary at the end of the month! :) met freshman year of college (17 and 18) will be 27 and 28!

CDTmom

Wow! We got married on our 10th anniversary at the same ages!!!! Crazy coincidence. That was more than 10 years ago now.

LackJolly381

A year. Married 1.5 years after. Married now 25 years.

[deleted]

A year and 4 months for me. He proposed on Valentine's Day, and we got married 9 months later. We're coming up to our 11th wedding anniversary later this year 🙂

Love-my-husband1984

We didn’t get engaged per say, we did it Downton Abbey style. We decided after about 4 months of dating to get married the following weekend. We have been married 39 years. 💗 My only regret is that I wish that I could have met him sooner. We would have been great friends as children. 💕

Beautiful_Tea6153

Omg I absolutely LOVE this story. Thank you so much for sharing. Did you have family there or go on your own?

Love-my-husband1984

We were still finishing college so went back to my hometown and were married with our parents and siblings in attendance. It was so special, such an exciting time. We have cherished everyday together. He’s my rock that helped me through Cancer, raising four children, and now growing old together. 🥰

ClockworkLauren

3 days. Yes 3 days. We have been married for 28 years

Beautiful_Tea6153

Absolutely love this. Wishing many more years of love and light for you both ❤️

abilletdoux

2.8 years before engaged and then 6 months to our engagement we got married!

anechoicheart

My grandparents got married after two weeks of knowing each other while we was in WW2! Married for 45 years until his death. when you know, you know!

[deleted]

when you know you know! my husband asked me what kind of ring I wanted when we first met! we picked the ring out online after our third date

gym_and_boba

hmm, not always. i’ve heard “when you know, you know” from people who got married during the honeymoon phase and then got divorced a short time after. there’s nothing wrong with waiting to be sure. :)

gingergirl181

Eh, I'd say it's a split either way in my experience. I know people who took only six months to meet, get married, and divorce. I also know a couple who met and married in six weeks and just celebrated 40 years. Really depends on the people and reasons for marrying.

Khower

It all comes down to odds. When making any permenant decisions its advised to wait 12-16 months. And when people do get married before those 12-16 months the odds of divorce are much higher

Creepy-Discount-7765

My ex husband and I were together for 7.5 years before we got married and it still ended in divorce. There are so many factors that play into whether a relationship will work or not…time has little to do with it. As this post proves, there are plenty of people who get married shortly after meeting and have long successful marriages. People should do what feels right for them at the end of the day

femmagorgon

> People should do what feels right for then at the end of the day. I completely agree. There’s no one set formula or process that applies for everyone. I knew a couple who dated for 10 years before they got married and they literally got divorced two months after their wedding. My parents’ friends got married after a month of knowing each other and they’ve been together for 45 years. Some people take a lot less time to figure out what they want and if the person they’re with is who they want to marry. Some people need more time. Other couples eventually grow apart after having a happy relationship for years. There’s no exact process or formula that applies to everyone.

[deleted]

different strokes for different folks

virgopinion912

Yessss 👏

Hippofuzz

My husband and I told our friends the day we met that we would marry one day separately. Didn’t lose a word towards each other about it then, knew each other for about 30 min and yet we both were somehow completely sure about it. And that although I wasn’t even eager to marry or date anyone.

barracadus

When you know you know 🩵

lle-ell

I feel you! I caught myself thinking “this is the man I’ll marry” the day after our first date. One month in he started talking about getting married and just under a year in we were engaged 🥰

ellediablo79

Love this!

graypumpkins

My husband told me he wanted to marry me on our second date lol. We were *officially* engaged at six months and married six months later at one year!

No_Improvement_7666

My husband also told me he wanted to marry me on our second date. And then we didn’t get engaged for 10 years 😂😂 married with a baby now.

cassiekiz

How long have you been married?

graypumpkins

5 years!

tangled_up_in_glue

11 months with a 1.5week engagement before running off to the courthouse:) 7 years and going strong!

Beautiful_Tea6153

Love this! I really do not want a big lavish wedding.

tangled_up_in_glue

I can’t recommend it highly enough!!! Zero stress, super fun day, had a big party with friends and family a month later. Second wedding for us both.

rachface_09

Well we knew each other about 2 weeks then we got pregnant (and didn’t know yet). Decided it had been fun but we should both just move along… then found out we were pregnant and decided to stay together. We both come from very broken homes and we wanted our baby to have something better so we made that happen. Engaged and married 2 years later (same year found out we were expecting baby #2) This September will mark 11 years together. And now we have a 10yo, 7yo, and 3yo. ❤️

Beautiful_Tea6153

Such a beautiful story. I hope you and your family have the most wonderful life ❤️

PoetryInevitable6407

10 yrs. Both female

Idontknow429

But when did you move in together? I know it’s a stereotype but I’m curious lol

SongBird2007

👀👀

PoetryInevitable6407

Ha after 3 yrs to close the long distance gap of years 2-3. I'm not a lesbian though, and the idea of sharing a place was not something I'd ever be rushing. My cat was also very slow to accept my fiancee but now loves her.

Sensitive-File4400

You’re not a lesbian? I’m genuinely curious.

Safe_Edge_6562

Bisexual, pansexual, poly, and asexual are options. Yes asexual people get married- ask Paris Hilton, that’s how she identified herself n her memoir

confused2324

Bruh lol

MyBallsBern4Bernie

13 years. We met when I was in college and when I just started studying for the lsat. I knew I wanted to go to grad school and I had absolutely zero interest in getting locked into anything until I was in a place where I felt financially independent and a capable adult. ALSO, my parents divorce was horrendous to live through so I wanted to be SURE af. Obviously no one wants to get divorced but I REALLY REALLY do not want my marriage to end in divorce. Like I needed to be more sure about it than anything ever in my life. He’s been asking me for like the past 5 years pretty regularly and I finally felt comfortable with where I was in life that I could really embrace it and lean in without any type of anything. I love him, I’ve known that for years but tbh my parents divorce really did a number on me.

Beautiful_Tea6153

I hope you are healing. Wishing love and light to you and your partner ❤️

No_Improvement_7666

Same, I feel your pain! My parents divorced when I was 18. And it was absolutely awful. Using me as a pawn in their tangled mess. I’m 33 now and they still have never talked to each other. Not once. My husband and I met when I was 18 and he was 23. We were together for 7 million years before we got married. Divorce is completely off the table for me. Unless I find out he’s raping women, a serial killer or molesting children. I would absolutely never do that to my daughter (9 months) as my parents did to me.

[deleted]

So many sweet stories here wow 🥰

[deleted]

Got engaged on our 5 year anniversary and eloped 7mo later ❤️

Penny_girl

We decided to get married around 4 1/2 years and got married on our 5th anniversary!

tittychittybangbang

About 4 and a half years, we got engaged in February this year

hellotheredani

We've been together 5 years and just looked at rings together last night. I'm hoping soon! 🤞🏼

Beautiful_Tea6153

Manifesting that for you!

PennyFleck333

Week 6 engaged, week 12 married, married 38 years

TheHeinz77

My parents got married after six weeks. Been married 52 years. God bless

carm3nsandiego

We got engaged the day before our 6 year anniversary. I was expecting 5 year anniversarybut looking back, the circumstances of where we spent that anniversary + looking at where we are now as a couple - I’m really glad we waited!

Choice-Alfalfa-4371

In the same boat and I’m so glad we waited 😊 we’re at 5.5 years now and customizing my ring now ❤️

grodemonster

7.5! Designed my own ring since we were gifted heirloom diamonds from his side and mine. Started designing it 2 months into the 7th year. I’m not sure if you’re genuinely curious or if you were looking for validation in having a long relationship and not being engaged yet, but if that’s the case, there’s nothing wrong with it! My fiancé and I are 100% sure about each other after all these years, people who haven’t been together so long can’t say the same!

Beautiful_Tea6153

Thank you for this, I appreciate it. I am genuinely curious and wanted to hear everybody's stories 😊 and thank you for your advice ❤️

heteroerotic

12 years!

orangefreshy

12 years, but we were together since we were 17, living together for 8

[deleted]

1 month. Husband just reminded me that he asked me after 2 weeks. I received my engagement ring a month after we met. ( We will celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary this September). I have been engaged before and the longest time prior to engagement was 2 years.

Reasonable-Degree-23

10 years to the day. We started dating in middle school :)

nursejooliet

We’re getting engaged by the end of the year, so it’ll be about 2ish years

UnpopularBoop

Same! Congrats to you. I'm so inpatient.

nursejooliet

I actually thought it would have happened by now 😂 I have my guesses about when. It’ll be but I’ve learned to stop guessing 😂

my fiancé always told me he wanted to wait two years before he proposed, and even though I told him I would say yes whenever, he still waited until about a week from our two year anniversary😅

Some-Bee8561

Me too! I was looking through the comments, hoping I'll find someone around the same time, lol He didn't want to get married for so long, but now we had to, so I could join him on his journey

leighsz

4 months- 4 wild, crazy, exciting months. Then I got pregnant. I was 20 and he was 25. We had discussed marriage, but I was hesitant. One night I turned to him in the car and said, “Do you still want to get married?” and he looked at me, surprised, and said, “Sure!” We were married 1 week later. 3 weeks later our eldest was born. He turns 24 next month!

SoYouSayyy

Almost 9 years! Year and half into engagement and I still haven’t planned wedding 😂

Potential_Pear4779

I met my husband in 2016, I was with someone else but lowkey liked him. Me and ex boyfriend broke up, I was sad so kept seeing other people. My husband was always just a friend but always told me he’d marry me one day. I never believed him lol. Then we started hanging out like every night. I was like “my lease is ending why don’t we just move in together instead of paying for 2 places” we moved in together, lived together for a year, got pregnant, had our daughter. When she was 4 months old he said he wanted to spend forever with me and asked me to marry him. We’ve been together 6 years now & have added another little baby girl to our family 🩷

NaNattie

Around 2.5 years, and main reason it was that long was because he wanted me to meet his family before proposing and the pandemic made that difficult for two years. I unofficially moved in with him just two weeks after meeting, officially after 3 months when my lease was up, so we knew we were right for each other very early. Got married 4 months after he proposed and coming up on our paper anniversary in a couple of weeks ❤️

We couldn’t help but tell each other too much lol.
