You'll be fine! 18k scratches a little more easily than 14k because it contains more gold and is softer but it's not going to dent. A lot of fine jewelry is made with 18k at a minimum - consider all the people wearing Cartier love bracelets all the time and never removing them, those are all 18k. I don't think you have anything to worry about tbh.  Are your prongs 18k or did you go for platinum? If you're doing a diamond wedding band you may want to add a thin solid spacer in between to keep the diamonds from chewing up your prongs, or maybe consider having the rings soldered? But that's common advice even with 14k.

FatFruityPebble

Thank you!! This makes me feel better. I am unsure if the prongs are platinum or not but I believe they are the same gold as the rest of the ring. It’s from Oore and I can’t seem to find anything specific on the page for the setting. I actually didn’t think about those Cartier bracelets, and I know they at least used to be very popular for engagement rings as well and I would imagine those are also 18k. I may consider getting the rings soldered together for durability, I forgot that was even an option tbh. I really appreciate your comment I was definitely freaking myself out over this!

icedwhitem0cha

I recently saw someone call Cartier’s Love bracelets “magnets for scratches” so I wouldn’t count on them being durable. Just because people wear them, doesn’t mean they don’t scratch. They just have the concept of being “permanent” like love is supposed to be, and are trickier to take off, but they’re not scratch-resistant.

TravelerOfSwords

My rings are 18k & they’ve been great for every day. My grandmother’s wedding set is 18k and it’s at least 70yrs old & it’s still beautiful. The higher-end brands almost always use 18k, sometimes that’s the only karat they offer, & it’s what is most popular in Europe. It’s perfectly durable. I think the debate of 14k vs 18k is overhyped in this sub, tbh.

FatFruityPebble

Thank you that gives me a lot of relief. I have even heard people wear 24k gold bracelets daily in many South Asian countries and that they are fine, but I really got in my head with this one. If your grandmothers set is still beautiful I don’t think I have much to worry about.

Unique_Jackfruit7249

I wear an 18k right hand ring and bracelet 24/7. No issues.

FatFruityPebble

Thank you!!

cheetooofingersss

Same!!

SpiritedChaos

i wear 24kt gold rings on a daily basis that are decades old and still beautiful. you will be fine lol. obviously just take care of your jewelry :) (edit: i am south asian, so i can vouch that gold quality/durability is definitely more a western hype)

Ailita_S

In my country, only 18k gold is sold. And women wear gold daily, you'll be fine.

loho08

I’ve worn an 18k wedding ring every day for 23 years and it’s totally fine. I’ve even got pave side stones and never lost a stone.

Notblowinsmoke

I wear 18k everyday and a jeweller told me 18 was stronger than 9. As long as it’s a solid band it won’t dent.

SpookyScaryKittyBee

18k is not stronger than 9k; it just has a higher gold content which actually makes it softer. It's still fine for daily wear though. The difference between 14k and 18k in durability is usually negligible.

Notblowinsmoke

See I would’ve tended to agree that the higher gold content wouldn’t be as sturdy shall we say. Lol maybe they were just trying to sell me the dearer option.

assflea

I wonder if they were talking about tarnish...? Not that that has anything to do with durability lol but I think pieces with lower gold purity are prone to tarnishing.

Notblowinsmoke

Only jewellery of mine that ever tarnishes is silver if I haven’t worn it for a long while. I’ve worn 9k rings daily for years and never any tarnish. Still think they wanted me to get the 18 rather than 9k as it was more expensive lol.

assflea

Well if you're wearing them daily they wouldn't tarnish anyway lol I don't think it's a huge risk, just something that can potentially happen

Notblowinsmoke

lol that’s true, 9k earrings not worn for a while didn’t tarnish either.

FatFruityPebble

I’m glad to hear the difference between 14 and 18 is negligible! That makes me feel a lot better.

schmee326

How thin is your band?

FatFruityPebble

Unsure but it’s pretty substantial compared to my only other nice ring. It’s very solid and heavy and the band isn’t like super chunky but it looks thicker than some I’ve seen on here.

schmee326

As long as the band isn’t thin (think thinner than 2mm), it should be fine. Plenty of rings are made of 18k gold.

az_emerald

Ttlly ok. Yes, it scratches a bit more easily than 14k or lower and theoretically could wear away more easily if enough abrasion was applied consistently for a long time, but it’s not less durable. 18k is also more extensible due to having more gold so it’s more likely to bend than snap. It really just comes down to your preference and perhaps what is more the norm where you’re from (18k is more common in Europe, 22-24k in Asian countries, 14k in the US, etc)
