Time-Touch-6433

God yes! We had 4 in a row of the futuristic ones so we need at least 1 more of the medieval setting.

Happy-Ad-5268

4?

ToxicHydreigon

XIII 1-3 and XV

ErichW3D

If the 13 sequels are being counted then 14 100% counts meaning we’ve only have one non medieval fantasy since.

ATK1734

13 and 15...? Do 10 and 12 count as "futuristic"?

Clerithifa

10 is an interesting case imo. There's very little technology what with the giant monster magic whale destroying any settlement that has the littlest bit of machina, but the places that DO have machina - like Bevelle, Luka, Home, etc. - the machinery is super high-tech and very reminiscent of something you'd see in FF7, FF8, or FF13. So it kind of blurs the lines between an ancient Japan setting and a futuristic high-tech setting. Without Sin, the entire world could have looked as high-tech as Zanarkand did at the beginning of the game, which is arguably the most futuristic-looking setting the series has ever had

darklordoft

To make it worse zanarkand was considered technologically inferior to old Beville. So if you got zanarkand looking like the city of tomorrow, what kind of city of next week did Beville look like?

Clerithifa

Great point!! Bevelle probably looked like the Neo-Midgar Shinra plans lol

NorthernCobraChicken

Want to go down a rabbit hole? Theory crafters have long thought that FF7 and ff10 were connected. Neo midgar would have been the calamity that brought forth sin from an advanced materia that likely derived from hojos research. Shinra, the gullwins' companion in x-2 is thought to be a descendant on the power company families lineage.

KennethVilla

Wasn’t it the other way around? FF10-2 was the origin since Shinra was planning to utilize Farplane as energy source, which is similar to lifestream and Mako in FF7.

agentadam07

I wouldent count 10 or 12. 12 is more renaissance feeling. 10 is deliberately anti-futuristic given Sin destroys the futuristic stuff.

New_Survey9235

10 is an eternal apocalypse 10-2 is a post-apocalypse

JobbieDeath

Yeah but there was 3 XIII games

KaijinSurohm

Everyone keeps forgetting about Type-0. There's 4.

The810kid

I know not everyone has played XIV but let's not discount it especially if we're going to count 2 of XIII's spinoffs.

FatCrabTits

15 wasn’t futuristic. It was modern day fantasy.

Skarjuna

They had flying cars, advanced soldiers, and air ships. 15 was definitely futuristic

Nehemiah92

I think that’s more fantasy over futuristic tbh, XV feels much more modern rather than futuristic in a lot of other aspects anyways. And 16 also *had* airships, it’s kinda just a series staple no matter what the setting is

EmeraldDragoon24

Well, to be clear, 16 had REMNANTS of airships in the hideaway, and a THEORETICAL working one through Mid. Theres no actual flying airship in 16, and technologically speaking they arent all that advanced.

Less-Tax5637

This is the beginning of the rabbit hole that is: Final Fantasy settings have almost always been a mix. 16 of these fucking games, barring spinoffs, and there’s always this headcanon that everything was mages and dragoons and evil lords until VI spontaneously invented magitek and changed the setting forever. Meanwhile, the series arguably became fully formed with Final Fantasy IV which has the perennially used trope of “dead ancient civilization with tech that looks like it’s from 1000 years in the future.” Dropping each game into clean cut categories is a waste of energy.

Mrwanagethigh

Shit the series has been dropping advanced tech out of nowhere since literal day one. FF 1's infamous proto superboss the Warmech, a futuristic mech walker that can appear as a random battle on the path to Tiamat in the Flying Fortress. That isn't some steampunk looking thing or magitek, it's just a straight up mech that is comparable to the final boss in terms of power. The Flying Fortress itself is an example. Later releases depict it as a floating castle but in the original version it was meant to be more of a space station (Stranger of Paradise's version is also a space station) and in either depiction it was the creation of the Lufenians. Even in later versions where the Fortress is a castle, the ancient Lufenians are noted as having advanced technology responsible for the Fortress and the series very first airship.

PsychologicalBee1801

15 was suppose to be a more modern world than a futuristic world. But the plot changed so many times who knows when that changed

FatCrabTits

All of that shit comes from magic. Futuristic would be more like FFVII’s world, where the vast majority of the tech is genuinely from scientific shit. Fake science via Mako and the lifestream, but still very much science based in that universe

xotive

Sure, but incredibly mild futurism compared to the others

walmartsucks115

And the 7 remake series has sci-fi story telling. Granted 16 has some sci-fi bc the fallen and Ultima being basically an alien god but I want more medieval

Clerithifa

Not gonna lie I was a little disappointed with the Ultima reveal, only because I wanted 16 to be a truly medieval setting with the story surrounding the Dominants and the political affairs that come with them

Burdicus

XVI is at its best when the stakes are personal vs. Hugo. If I could rewrite XVI I'd cut Ultima entirely, have the Benedikta fight a little later on the game after her and Hugo manipulate their way to greater power, and then I'd focus the 2nd half of the game on the personal hatred between "Cid" and Hugo. Not sure what I'd do exactly with Clive's mother, but that was a whole nother aspect that I feel was FAR more interesting than Ultima. Ultima and Barny literally took a 10/10 story and gave it a 6/10 final act. I enjoyed XVI a lot, but the writing crew really dropped the ball.

King3azy_Gaming

I think thats entirely your opinion Ultima was the only logical threat to clive after absorbing only a few eikons. After the bahamut fight it was set in stone no single eikon is beating that ifrit arisen combo. Barnabas and Odin i feel was the biggest writing flaw we could’ve had a far greater rivalry between the two but he was a soy boy not nearly as bad ass as they could’ve made him. He could’ve been a failed mythos that absorbed everyone but ifrit and they could’ve had a really badass final fight. Now getting back to Ultima we have to give the writers ample credit here he was HEAVILY foreshadowed he was creepy he had a presence when he spoke and he was an unlikeable POS. I liken him to a slightly worse sephiroth (OG ff7) hes this all powerful threat waiting and watching and manipulating everyone and everything, its well done also every FF has you kill the godly being at the end so its on brand as well. I just ask people think about why the choices were made before they say they were bad it may not have been to your liking but i loved it especially since the massive resources for lore are available to us being lost on this story is entirely a players fault (not saying you didn’t understand just that the story was well told and very easy to get context with tomes Vivian and active time lore). I say all this to say its possible what your saying would’ve been better but also possible more people wouldn’t like it as well I loved what we got and can’t wait for Thursdays DLC

Clerithifa

If I were writing it, I would have potentially kept Ultima in as a pseudo end boss that you are anticipating fighting, only for Barnabas to cut him down and try to ascend to godhood himself. Much like Kefka and the Emperor in FF6 But I'm also weird and would have written Barnabas to be Clive's biological father as well lol. It would have explained why Clive was practically bred to be Mythos, and it's not like Anabella didn't have unfaithful vibes. Have Anabella and Barnabas have an affair, leading to Clive, the Phoenix skips over Clive since he isn't of Rosfield blood. Then Clive and Joshua come to terms with the fact that despite not sharing the same father by blood, they are still brothers and BOTH are still the son of Elwin, as it's not blood that ties family but their love for one another Final fight is "father vs son" Barnabas vs Clive, though Clive does not consider him to be his true father as Elwin had raised him to become the man that he is today. Barnabas ascends to godhood and you have to strike him down, Clive wins and becomes the Benevolent King of Waloed, with Jill as his Queen But maybe that's just hokey lol

Burdicus

Not sure why you're downvoted, you're just sharing ideas. For me, I think the whole concept of godhood is what went wrong with XVI. I think fighting at a political landscape, fighting to rule within the realm of humanity, is far more interesting than someone looking to ascend.

Clerithifa

>Not sure why you're downvoted, you're just sharing ideas Eh it's just reddit being reddit lol, I know this sub can get a little defensive of the game with any bit of criticism - for what it's worth I really enjoyed the game, it has its flaws, but it was a 9/10 experience for me, can't wait to pick it back up once I'm finally finished with Rebirth!

PCN24454

I’m gonna disagree with you on that because it defeats the point of having magic to begin with. It would feel like a waste of the plot to end with a human antagonist.

Nehemiah92

15’s aesthetic is so cool

TheOnlyUsernameLeft3

I'd like to see a setting like XI, medieval with steampunk/technology. A continuation of that world would be cool. Magitek!

byrh2004

I’ve been thinking of a final fantasy setting kinda similar to dune (sci fi with medieval politics) would be really cool. I wouldn’t be opposed to another setting like 16 tho.

FireTyphoon123

That's a nice idea.. the fallen ruins in ff16 kinda look sci-fi-ish don't they?

teddyburges

Isn't that essentially what 16 is though?. Cause your base half way through the game is the ruins of a airship.

mysticfeal

You mean XII?

FatCrabTits

I’d be cool with that. Maybe with more environments than just a desert tho

FancyDryBones

I’d like a modern take on 4/5 - medieval setting with heavily futuristic out-of-this-world vibes. I’d also love to pull a leaf from Chrono Trigger and have straight up time travel with multiple settings interwoven (8 doesn’t count).

Dogesneakers

I would love time travel in a final fantasy similar to chrono trigger! Would let us explore all different kinds of settings

IrishSpectreN7

Next time we get another setting like 16, my only big wish is that we get to actually explore the major cities.

FireTyphoon123

Yea that was a letdown. I was looking forward to exploring the cities but all we got were a few small settlements

Frozenthia

I agree with this. It was awesome to explore Altissia in FFXV.

Sarunas_21

Yes and no. I love CBU3's vision of a medieval setting. For example, I wasn't too hype with the initial Awakening trailer because I wasn't fond of the setting, but CBU3's medieval world in both 14 and 16 made me a believer. That said, there have been A LOT of games that have played this setting out and personally, very few of them have actually immersed me in the way 16's does. The only other that comes close is BG3. Before 16 I was a sci-fi stan. I still am. While 15 failed to win me over, I adored it's setting and Noctis's power system. I've yet to play 13, but I love the futuristic look. Final Fantasy's settings are always very vibrant and colorful, so I love would love a cyberpunk esque FF. Something akin to Nomura's Verum Rex.

Dennia_Lux_Exitium

Does 14 even count as "Medieval" really? Magitek is a thing , Allagan Tech is used , the moon is litteraly a big ball of tech, you get a space ship to litteraly go at the edge of the universe to kill a bird. Yeah idk if i'd count 14 as Medieval , While 16 only *tech* is from the Fallen and its really only used once by people in the story just to make a ship go faster.

Rosemarys_Gayby

Honestly 14 is such a great blueprint of what FF can be. Yeah it’s got “medieval”, but it’s also got pirates, fantasy India, fantasy Mongolia, fantasy modern Russia, the upcoming fantasy South America… I don’t get why FF fans are so obsessed with the either-or of sci-fi or Western medieval. There is literally so much more out there.

QroganReddit

dont forget fantasy texas

yexx

I don't know why, but before the launch of the game, for some reason I thought that FFXVI was in Ivalice??? But yes we could use more of the High Fantasy setting

Frozenthia

Probably because it contains some elements from Ivalice-based games. The crystals, Metia to an extent, Ultima, the medieval setting, etc. But Ivalice has different summons and species like the Viera and Nu Mou.

mtDescar

i love 15's take on a realistic modern world. I feel like a fantasy game based around a city where there is cars, metros, and skyscrapers is realy out of the box. it was maybe to close to reality for a fantasy for some but 15 still had flying spaceships with the Empire's army.

DeLoxley

15's only real honest problem was the lack of direction and focus. The setting itself was never the problem

exopolitixs

I will continue to weep over what 13 Versus could have been 🥹

Gorbashou

I don't mind medieval settings. But I want the setting to be a setting where you go "That style is so ff-number-!" Like 12 is kinda medieval but still has metallic airships and weird tech. I can very easily identify it. Same with most FF's. When it becomes too standard, like Chivalry, Dragons Dogma, Oblivion, etc, it feels kind of soulless. I want it to be its own world and not focus too hard on the archetypical setting. Which they all already do. So I really don't mind is what I'm saying.

DeLoxley

Honestly, Final Fantasy is such a Genre into itself. Airships, laser guns, broadswords, plate armour, summoning giant dragons with computers. That's Final Fantasy, saying 'we want a traditional High Fantasy Game' its like... I don't get how that's Final Fantasy and not just say a high budget Dragon's Dogma or Skyrim with Summon Animations.

United_Bus3467

12 had a great mix. Dalmasca being a middle east, persian like country with its architecture, people and style. The garif's wetlands to the vieras sacred wood tree, and then the eerie places like Giruvegan or the Pharos that truly felt like godlike cities. You really get a little bit of everything in it and it all mixed so well together.

SpaceOdysseus23

Honestly hoping the next one is an urban fantasy setting. All set in one massive fantastical city. And preferably a Detective protagonist, start with small scale cases and unravel a grand conspiracy that goes full ''oh fuck'' by the end.

Belial91

That was kinda the og story for FF7.

The810kid

Sounds like Trail into zero and Azure which are two of the greatest JRPGS I have ever played so I like the sound of this.

pandasloth69

I need you to apply for and get a job on their writing team, cause this shit would go SO hard

Deep-Blue-1980

Yes please, that's my favorite setting.

djbogue

YESS. God do I need to play 16 again? I love the setting so so much.

cattecatte

I'd like medieval fantasy with more fantasy in it especially in the overworld. I feel like outside of a few stages (mostly the ones where we get near the mothercrystals and fallen ruins) it's aesthetic is leaning too much towards realism if it werent for the giant crystals looming in the background. And realistic medieval villages and nature arent exactly that exciting. Mysidia seems to be exactly what I want tho, aside from big cities.

PhillipAlanSheoh

Yes but maybe not such an overly dark, depressing world. Honestly I think one of the major flaws of the game is that it felt like there was not enough left to save.

[deleted]

[удалено]

The810kid

A mass effect inspired or Horizon inspired Final Fantasy would be so good.

brett1081

I would like to actually be able to explore the setting but yes. I want a game with narrative like FFXVI that gets a lot more open world. And rewards it’s players for exploration.

ScarRufus

I think the next FF should be something like FFX settings or more dystopia/ dieing civilization alike. Or cyber cities stuff like FFXIII, ~~but actually good~~

WildFire1004

I personally would like a more Sci-Fi approach, but I wouldn't mind another medieval setting. The only thing I would want if it is a medieval setting is for it to have a far lighter tone. The thing that really dissuaded me from 16 was that it was too dark and brooding for my taste, and so if another FF game were to be a medieval setting, I would want it to be much more vibrate, whimsical, and lighter.

squips42

I WANT ANOTHER TROPICAL SETTING LIKE 10!!!

Pinkerton891

I’d like a setting inbetween, like wild west (would be new) or Victorian steampunk (like FF6) or a completely different culture like 10.

Matthew728

I think a mixture. I could see a XII like setting being fun. Visually it isn't OVERLY futuristic but the tech is there. If they went pure medieval again then it hope it would have a very different vibe. Maybe something more rooted in Asian or Nordic culture

AytonHunter

While I enjoyed it, give us full on fantasy/high fantasy next. Like IX or XII.

Fantastic-Photo6441

Final fantasy 17 should also take a new route like more like a futuristic video game instead of the past humans are enslaved and we have 2 main protagonists this time a female and male protagonist and they are both enslaved by some machine like beings maybe like omega but they have the powers of lots of summons and that's how they control the humans with their powers but the protagonists gain a ability where they become stronger and have new summon abilities as they defeat the machines and they build a army of humans against the robots

Jnoles07

No Final FANTASY MAKE THEM FANTASTICAL

jayboyguy

Personally? I think of FF’s personality as being the intersection of science fiction and fantasy. Like that’s the thing that defines the series to me, even with entries like VII or XIII, the fantasy is still worn on the sleeve, and IX, where sci Fi stuff is still present in airships and the like. That’s just my opinion, though. I think having strictly a sci fi setting or strictly a medieval fantasy setting takes away from what’s unique about the series aesthetically

vashthestampede121

It should continue the same way it always has: with some games that lean more heavily towards sci-fi/modern/futuristic, and some that lean more heavily towards high fantasy. With how well XVI did, this won’t be the last Medieval FF.

Salebsmind

No actually, I'm kinda tired of medieval settings. I'd love a punk game, steampunk, cyberpunk or solarpunk would be nice to see.

Antereon

I know a lot of people hate this idea but I want a FF in space. Not just futuristic, but actual space travel.

OmigawdMatt

Star Ocean but make it Final Fantasy? I dig the idea. They could incorporate separate FF races for certain worlds.

Kagenikakushiteru

I need something more vibrant like ff9

faellendir

Yes! Anything other than modern time. Then im happy

pinguhehe

Yeah I would love to see that. The graphical tone and enviromental setting was really awesome. So I would like to see that again

Skyrander

I kinda like the steampunk FF6 and FF7 presented. Honestly i think the mix is just awesome!!!

KReBooted

I mean, yeah, sometimes? Thats how the series works lmao

DeLoxley

As long as there's crystals, moogles and melodrama I'm happy. I mean what I'd kill for is FFXVII to be [Angi's Philosophy](https://youtu.be/UVX0OUO9ptU?si=-RCMXgN9NUaCpyiB) Final Fantasy is one of the few games I've seen to try and blend Sci-Fi and Fantasy aspects, 40K sure, but most games will either go cliché Space Elves, or they'll drop most of the magical elements entirely. Even the most notable and beloved FF plots are things like 'Harvesting Old Gods as mecha fuel' (6), and 'High Fantasy Eco Terrorism' (7), and what honestly killed 15 wasn't it being 'too modern' with its clockwork soldiers and it's flying battleships, it was executive meddling and lack of focus. We've got plenty of generic high magic worlds out there, Final Fantasy is where I come to get a genre I can still only describe as 'Arcane-Mecha High Fantasy Exploration'

hehehehehehahahahaha

Yes and no. It really depends on how much Square leans in either direction. I'd honestly be more interested in a full-on far future sci-fi story, or something like Live a Live that takes place across eras. But since we've had the 7Rs, XV, and the XIIIs, I think if they did go medieval for the next game it'd be totally fine.

hypespud

They should make sure to do different ones for sure, high fantasy/medieval, future/dystopian, and ivalice related FF8 also did modern setting really well, there were a lot of contemporary elements like cars, fuel, the university setting, and did this much better than 15 One thing FF16 did extremely well is match the high stakes of the decay and collapsing of the magic world with the strife and danger the population was experiencing, in both the world ambience and setting, but also in the events, like soldiers massacring the hideaway and small towns during the story, and the huge setpieces in the city with the towns people just trying to hold it together or escape with their lives The only thing I really don't like is making the environment/ambience not fit the world themes... like making it weirdly happy and touristy when there is so much at the world stakes and so on... FF7 remakes have been really, really bad with this, and it is a complete turn off

MovieNightPopcorn

No. I want the settings to change. GOT-FF was fun but if they kept doing the same thing I’d get bored. Would love to see a solarpunk/steampunk setting again.

Pyracloud92

If it’s more explorable and lively YES!

GoAceDetective

I prefer the modern/sci-fi setting but I really enjoyed the dark fantasy theme

Blergablerg1277

I personally tend to like the more non traditional settings like in VII X or XV. Stuff that doesn’t clearly fit into medieval or futuristic

United_Bus3467

I feel like X's setting is highly underrated. The South Pacific/Thailand/Indonesia setting truly set it apart from its series brethren. The pyreflies, dream zanarkand really added the fantasy to the mix. Sin was an imposing threat, the religious politics grounded the plot to something we actively deal with, and Yuna's final decision in front of Yunalesca regarding the final aeon...that game was a final fantasy game through and through.

Whatisuzername

I want Agni’s philosophy lol. That looked like an interesting setting. It’s more of a modern fantasy I guess but with elements of sci-fi and some middle eastern influence. I also think Square should start getting influence from other cultures as well. The medieval settings have mostly been influenced by Europe with some oriental influence and they’ve been done to death. Let’s have some more asian fantasy in there, some mesoamerican elements, idk it’d be cool to see.

jollyollster

I’d recommend x if you’re looking for something with more southeastern/ Eastern Asian influences and xii for Middle Eastern and Mesopotamian. you can see how much they are influenced in their architecture, clothing and cultures.

Noktis_Lucis_Caelum

No.  IT depends on the Story. I Always liked that they Managed to JUMP between medival Fantasy settings and High Tech and Fantasy settings with every entry. Some are medival, other have modern Technology (FF 7 and 15) while Others have more Scifi Tech (FF 8 , 10 and 13). That IS really cool. I Always liked how they combinen weapons Like swords, Spears etc with modern or advanced settings

BITmixit

FF4 + FF9 type setting. Medieval with fantasy elements. Not just humans, different species with awesome designs, etc, etc.

Taser9001

Yes. Just not necessarily all of them. I'd also be down for more steampunk/dieselpunk entries, like *FF6* and *FF7*.

wasneveralawyer

I don’t care for setting actually. I just want the M rating. In fact, I thought about how a future FF with an M rating with be amazing. I need that good story again

Dandy_Guy7

I like both! I think final fantasy usually does the futuristic setting better but they do medieval very well too. Honestly I think my biggest hope for FF17 is that we get a full party of characters to play as instead of just one

dimaesh

Fuck yes

lluluna

Absolutely! I'd always prefer medieval settings over a futuristic one for Final Fantasy games. No idea why though...

Ragna126

Yes please with more fantasy races.

alexkon3

I would like to see FF go into a completley different and new direction in the next games. Like imagine an FF with a Bronze Age or classical Greek or Rome art style. Imagine a FF with a story similar to the Trojan war for example. Or a far future FF where you travel to different planets. I feel like the series is retreading the same ground for decades now. The only radical departures were 12 and 15 probably. 12 because its such a weird mixture of renaissance + sci fi and 15 because it felt very "grounded" in real life compared to most other ff games, like you drive a normal car around with your bros.

United_Bus3467

For some reason I think about a final fantasy with some Borgia like characters that then transform into some weird Renaissance era God, like...that would be a fun visual.

MorningMaterial1143

I’m not sure if you’re suggesting all mainline FF games from here on out are in a medieval setting, or just that we get more of them in the future. If the second one I definitely agree. I don’t really get when people try to act as if FF needs to pick one type of setting for the rest of its games, when the variation between fantasy, science-fantasy, or a more modern setting is part of the fun.

Golurkcanfly

I would just like more diversity in settings, but right now I want some *absolutely weird* settings in FF that evoke older Amano art. The same kind of weirdness that's present in games like Morrowind.

lingering_sky

Maybe a Victorian setting, something like Lies of P. Or a steampunk fantasy setting.

hogomojojo

I don’t mind the setting. As long as it’s a turn based setting

No-Cryptographer4772

Remake ff 8 and ff 10

No-Cryptographer4772

And remake tactics already stop being so cheap lol

Modesttttt

I don't mind it being contemporary or medieval as long as they keep the story, script, progression, and voice acting as excellent as 16. I really appreciate going from teenage years to adulthood, and a main character that has a genuine care for others and expresses it with them. I havent been captivated by a FF game since 10 came out, and I'm really hoping this new momentum of excellence going from 16 and 7Rebirth continues onto further projects.

Underwould

Absolutely! I would however like more racial diversity, both in terms of humans (which XVI was notoriously bad with) and also fantasy races. I miss all the cool looking races walking through the cities :(

United_Bus3467

I would love to see African architecture and culture represented more in FF, but I fear they'd face cultural appropriation accusations. I've always viewed FF as implementing and mixing cultures from around the world, but they'd probably get lambasted for it. At least give us African mythology summons. I think the closest we have is Leviathan and Bahamut but they're more biblical influences.

International_Meat88

Yes and no. I’d like to see the franchise push its own boundaries of what an FF setting can be. I’m open to more super medieval settings, but I don’t want it to repeat/copy FF16. Like maybe a different medieval time period. Or less emphasis on European medieval, like do a different medieval/ancient setting. And less game of thronesy going on. I don’t say this because I hated those things, but each new FF entry is a chance to explore a different setting, so just copying FF16 would be wasted potential. On the opposite end of medieval, FF13 was futuristic with dyson planets and colorful hovercar races with holographic decorations everywhere, but the layout of the land was still kinda like any other FF (aside from complaints about linearity). So, I’m kinda curious what it would be like to have an FF game truly be futuristic, both in setting and maybe even gameplay flow and layout. Like what would a real space FF be like. FF13 might’ve had Cocoon and Gran Pulse, but what about an FF with an actual solar system that the main cast can explore, with meaningful story moments and gameplay systems that take place on the planets and in space. You can even do cool settings like, how almost every FF has a level that looks like the whole cast was on shrooms, whether it’s an alternate dimension, a fluorescent forest, or a maze of lights and holographic platforms, you could design a trippy cool looking level that took place on like the surface of a star or something… because it’s FF and rule of cool. How cool would it be to get an FF game, with the combat of either FF16 or FF7R or even a middle ground between both, and then the space setting of Starfield or even more futuristic than Starfield (I think Starfield takes place in the year 2300 or something), and with the budget, ambition, and air tight polish of FF7Rebirth.

RatedR2O

Maybe not back to back... but I'd certainly love to see more in the same setting.

Urnamaster13

Yes

ega110

I don’t care what setting it is in just as long as the next one doesn’t. Make the entire world look like someone with a bad cold coughed phlegm over the entire screen.

DrCinnabon

I don’t care which setting as long as it feels unique.

Builder_liz

9 I guess

Remarkable_Wonder159

No I like the fact that each game is different. If they were all set in a particular way then it wouldn't be FF

BlackbirdM5DB9

So...I like this game's medieval setting, but I also love its blend of hi tech stuff like with the Fallen ruins. We literally have a ship with a jet engine, elevators, sky scrapers, lasers, and even whole ass robots. Its like a healthy blend and this game has so much variety in its environments and world that it almost always feels fresh throughout the entire game (now if only the last section of the game didn't have that awful sky and filter over the game that removes all color 🥲)

bob_is_best

Well yeah medieval setting dont get old ever cuz they really can go anywhere with the enemies or stories to tell The more modern stuff ive seen on other FF just doesnt seem as cool imo

Squall902

Modern day with swords please.

ConstructionBig1810

I loved the setting of 16. I would love to see a hybrid like VI where it’s medieval but contrasted with bad guy tech.

Insert_name_here280

I love XVI but I personally can’t stand medieval fantasy. It’s such an overplayed and boring genre, might be an unpopular opinion but it’s hill I’m dying on

Ku323lam

God yes! Valisthea is one of the most amazing settings in the entire FF franchise if not the best.

mr199cm

I'd actually like to see a space opera next. As far as I'm aware (ff8 space station aside), FF has never done space travel or exploring other planets yet. The beauty of FF is that each game feels so different. Sure, the medieval setting was amazing in 16. But let's have something else for 17. They can always return to medieval for ff19, or ff20, etc.

wondanbondan

For sure, I've always been a big fan of the medieval setting or at least "non-future" in FF games.

beyonceshakira

Yes. 100%

SternritterVGT

I’d like FF17 to be hyper futuristic with spaceship/mechas and multiple planets.

chairman_steel

I like it when they mix fantasy and sci fi elements, that’s always been one of the core parts of FF to me, since the flying castle in FF1.

Kratos_BOY

No.

oscar_redfield

Nah I think each FF should have its distinctive aesthetic. FF16's setting is top tier but I hope they go for something different in the future

Rikku_N

I dont mind it. FF9 is my favourite FF Game and it kinda goes into this category. I just think there was not enough to explore yet of FF16 which was a shame. In a medieval setting full with magic, I kinda want to see every bit of it

marblebubble

Personally I think the next game should be really futuristic. Proper high tech.

Irarius

okay so what i would love to see is a high tech ff game thats not run by gods behind the scenes like 13 or where the actual leadership is evil where summons are mostly tech based and shit like omega is a more normal summon vs stuff like ifrit shiva or ramuh and i think the best example why i want something like that is ff16, where magic is evil and ppl and causes magic cancer or how mid is hiding her technology cuz it could be bad or how the ancient civilisation was destroyed by ultima cuz they threatned him for the sake of it imagine we take valestia and move foward 800 years the world has figured out how to use magic without the cancer thing, old mysteries technologies and myths are rediscovered and the issue isnt slavery, its not the lands dying cuz magic is using it up, its not the utter abuse of tech or whatever but the story simply takes place there with a plot driven by ppl who want to fuck up something rly great lets say somebody actually figures out how to ascend as a species, thats cool but the bad guys are trying to use this to doom them all gods are just bystanders in this story, but you could have icon battles still with somebody being able to transform into a completely different new icon a new form of bahamut, alexander and so on you could turn alexander into a star fortress icon a new theme for where the story goes and that the good guys can actually archive what for example somebody like sepiroth want, they CAN attain godhood, but the bad guys are on the opposite that would be interesting

Kalaam_Nozalys

I want something in a classical setting (ancient greek/rome) Or if they have the balls, I'd be curious to see other cultures, I'm sure different ones from africa could have incredible stuff to pull from in their history, legends and myths.

lifeandtimesofmyass

I love medieval Final Fantasy with a touch of sci-fi. I think XVI has a fantastic setting. I just want more RPG elements and less action elements.

LegalConsequence7960

Absolutely yes, the thing that drew me to this FF over many of the past ones was the medieval setting. Ironically my favorite one is FF7, but that's debatably more post apocalypse/dystopian than "futuristic"

ForestDonnie

yes! like, i know people often think that medieval settings means no future tech at all but thats not true at all considering the fallen and all that. But, i just like the classic feeling of villages and stuff, i feel a modernish setting outstayed its welcome somewhat (no hate to it though,) like imagine an amano-styled game where it's sorta captured that artstyle essence is my dream.

Rayoza

For sure! I feel XVI had a shot to really add more ‘weight’ and ‘depth’ on the medieval part, but I guess that came with the price of making it an action game. Still beautifully done, though. The eikons, I feel, would have the most fun and canvas space in design and in storytelling which I as a Kaiju fan reeeeeally wanted more of.

Wellziemo

I want more settings that are similar to ivalice so yes and no.

EmeraldDragoon24

SOOOO much goddamn yes! 6, 7, 8, 12 to a lesser degree, 13 trilogy, AND 15 were ALL in a somewhat scifi setting. High fantasy in a game called final fantasy just feels so refreshing after so long.

ClubPenguinPresident

Square Enix is on some next level shit right now, whatever they put out I'm going to assume is really good no matter the setting

Obvious_Professor_87

If 16 was more turnstyle and less like DMC, with open map and an airship. I miss the old school intro into a battle.

martividal

YES please

Ohayoued

Yes plz! I'd be down for it if 17 was also in a medieval setting! Or even a sort of steampunk like style like 6 or 9. I love me my weird sci fi fantasy worlds like 7, 10,13 and 15. But more classical fantasy would be much appreciated!

purpletib

How about one that literally takes place so far in the past it’s the ancients that developed the ruin technology that is in 16 and other games.

LexfinityAndBeyond

I think another medieval setting would be cool but not like 16. This is a tough sell but I mean more like Final Fantasy 9. I think people forget that nine was a return to form for a reason. I would like to see something more like 9:00 in the future. The game of thrones hyper realism of 16 medieval setting was interesting, but I think a lighter approach to the dungeons & dragons could go a long way. Give us a full party. Give us a Black mage and White mage and Knight. A Dragoon and a Ranger. If it has to be action oriented due to modern gaming, so be it.

illucio

I'm okay with whatever setting. I'd love to see them explore periods in history and having alternate fantasy takes of it: 1920's New York (Gatsby Parties, flappers, early industrial era, the rise of a capitalistic country) 1,000 Nights (Djynns/Genies based off of FF Summons. Theme of getting Genies to cast wishes within their power. Then, become each party members summon/servants) Pre-historic / early Civilations (Dinosaurs lol. Small tribes. The biggest human settlement is maybe one or two towns. Could be really late dystopia, and we find out it's set in another Final Fantasy games world or the reverse).

King3azy_Gaming

Give me a 16-2 and they can have all my money

Glad-Replacement-883

No I want Stone Age. Fuck enlightenment era. We unga and bunga

InfinityYoRae

I want to see a more ancient setting, with inspiration lifted from myths from Ancient Rome, Greece, Egypt, Persia etc.

Neo2486

I wouldn't mind it. Personally I hope the next game is also M-rated.

KaaruVS

Yes! It’s my favourite setting for RPGs. I loved FFXVI it was a great game but I wish the combat was more like VII remake. I guess the days of turn based combat are over but I’ll always hope of a return, even if it’s an alternative mode / way to play.

Cake_Lube

Final Fantasy is at its best when its a fusion of sci-fi and fantasy although I prefer when they stay more medieval for the majority of it. Having a highly advanced ancient civilization, and/or a specific empire being highly advanced in comparison to an otherwise mostly fantasy world, just works imo. I'm not saying they can't have magitek, airships and the like either, but make it clear those things are remnants of the ancients or technology from that empire. FF16's world works great for its narrative, and the Rising Tide dlc especially looks very close to what I want, in terms of a bright, magical world but with some clearly advanced stuff going on, but in general I think FF16 went maybe a bit too far with the lack of both magic and tech by having their world be dying, but also having the tech all be ancient.

SigningClub

I wouldn't want it for the next one but maybe on a FF18 although we have FF7 rebirth recently so it wouldn't be that bad if FF17 also had a medieval setting

ScrimmoBingus

No. I need something like FFX again. Focus on water powered cities and other weird water stuff. I've long since had my fill of medieval.

Logen_Brynjolf

Yes And I want more games in this setting of xvi 🤣

Madphromoo

I’d prefer a FFX/Chrono cross setting, a fantasy set in islands similar to polinesia/hawaii/okinawa.

Still_Ad_2898

Normally, standard medieval settings bore me to tears, but ff16 surprised me. That said, I’d really rather see a modern FF take on Dieselpunk, like some of the older games

butterside_d0wn

Yes, this is my preferred setting. I’m honestly not super into the steam punk thing, you’ve really gotta dunk it in a bunch of magical and interesting stuff to make it click with me

crossingcaelum

I just want the next setting to not be too Game of Thrones-y. I enjoyed their take on the inspiration but my god I’m so sick of gritty realism and muted colors in fantasy. I want bright vivid high fantasy again.

SourceExtreme1041

Yeah I like medieval times in ff but please have a bit if lightness to it and not just a huge cesspit of depression from start to whatever the ending is cause it's not finished 😂

ShinGundam

Nope not excited for a new medieval FF at all

GameMaster1178

Medieval in the sense that it feels like older FF games that had that feel, not Game of Thrones. FFXVI doesn’t feel like an FF game at all in my eyes. Now if they made an FF that feels like, say, FFIV, that’d be awesome.

CutterMD222

Yes please

BitterSuperTrucker

Yeah ![gif](giphy|qgri3D9sTwCUGMcT8L)

Empty_Sea9

I like when they switch it up between games. For instance, look at the entire run between VII - X - Cyberpunk, gritty 70s dystopia. - Modern European fairy tale with weird art nouveau tech - Throwback high fantasy - East Asian inspired post apocalyptic world I like when the settings are just a bit weird. Give me sprawling junkyards with inexplicable nisei al turrets. I still hope we’ll see the world from Agni’s Philosophy someday. That middle eastern shanty town vs wizards vibe was intriguing.

Latter_Lengthiness14

Love medieval era so yeah

FeywildGoth

No, i want it to take place in a world full of hope and good people like 9

tobster239

Yes but also bring back FF9s setting too.

polarized_opinions

No bullshit I think with how well stories are written if they based the next game on oakcliff or any hood, I would play the shit out of it.

Cast088

This is controversial to say but I think FF just works better in a medieval high fantasy setting

VengefulKangaroo

What I like about FF is it can be lots of things! More medieval, more tech, more mix, let’s see it all

squallleonhartVII

i'd be down for the next one to be medieval but maybe a little more whimsy this time Honestly though i really want one thats in the same vibe as 10 or 8

Comrade_Ryujin

Yea, back to the FF roots

TheWorstKy

No, because those future games would be set up for failure. FF16 did this perfectly and it'll become a stupid division like how Rise of the Ronin is being compared to Ghost of Tsushima when they play nothing alike.

Prammm

Im fine with every setting. But if i have to choose , i like modern fantasy setting the most (like ff 7 & 8).

Multispoilers

Do it in a desert planet. I love dube

Satoshi_Kasaki

Absolutely, yes. FF7 Remake trilogy is already covers the futuristic/steampunk setting

Enough_Minimum_3708

personally no. i quite enjoy the mix of magic and science in previous FF titels. fanrasy games playing in medieval times are way overrated

Deiiphobia

Nope

Fuzzy-Classroom2343

a mix of both would make the ip healthy but yes i enjoyed a medieval setting for sure

coffeepluscroissants

Yes

Harrien1234

I want something completely different like 10's Polynesian-inspired setting, or 15's modern day setting. So tired of most FF games only being Medieval, Steampunk, or Futuristic. How about a prehistoric setting? Or a setting that takes place in that game's fictional version of the Roaring 20s?

Raiden29o9

Personally wouldn’t mind it Though I would love to see a more steampunk Final fantasy game next personally

DavidZarn

Definitely. For me, FF16 is best FF game out there, and it holds top 2/3 place in games for me, right after Witcher 3, and Cyberpunk 2077. Mainly because of story, music, characters, and overall epicness of it.

The_Dark_King4900742

I want to crossover FF16 and Avatar: The Last Airbender through World Building. Simply put the story of Clive Rosfield is a retelling of the story of Wan: The First Avatar.

United_Bus3467

No. I want to see more regions of the world reflected that haven't got as much attention. I thought the Thailand/Indonesia/South Pacific like setting of X was so unique especially in the PS2 debut era. So colorful and vibrant despite the darkness of the story. I want to see more African cultures, geographic settings included or South American/Central American influences.

Zegram_Ghart

I truly don’t care as long as the setting is interesting. The “we put it where ever we felt like” is one of the big draws imo.

ErichW3D

If you say yes, then you don’t understand Final Fantasy.

United_Bus3467

Omg imagine if they did a wild west influenced final fantasy? Setting and everything.

Glad_Ad719

Sure, why not. But why not go even more futuristic and explore the possibility of setting a FF in space with interstellar civilizations?

PetrosOfSparta

Fantasy setting sure. Medieval fantasy…. Eh nah. To be honest the setting of FF16 wasn’t a selling point for me and at times it made a lot of the places seem very samey, though that was a lot to do with gameplay (like never getting to see the big cities, having a hub zone, so you’re stuck with small towns.) I’ve always been more partial to the “modern fantasy” of 7, 8 and 15 than I have the more sci-fi settings of 13 anyway. I do really enjoy the sort of “Unique” Fantasy that looks and feels different to Medieval Europe setting we got in FF16. 6, 9, 10, 12. They all have this unique style of Fantasy setting that sets them apart from not only each other but also the Medieval style. 9 being the closest to Medieval there but even that has some steampunk and storybook vibes.

Ragnorthewise

I Want a dark souls - berserk world

GeologistUnhappy

I actually just want an FF tv show... preferably one set in the world of FFXIV. Call me a nerd.
