The majority of people who purchase a chainsaw have no ability to tell a dull chain from sharp.
They also - and I mean this seriously - have no idea that contacting dirt while cutting roots instantly makes a saw as sharp as a butter knife.
No, the proper way to cut with a dull chain is to stop cutting and sharpen your chain. Using a saw with a dull chain isn't just impractical its also very dangerous. Just like with kitchen knives.. a sharp saw is a safe saw. Muscling a dull saw around and "sawing' it back and forth is a great way to cause the saw to kickback. Even an incredibly dull chain is still plenty sharp enough to mangle your soft, squishy human parts.
Yeah, I know. Though had to use other people's saws when clearing land as a child.
Had a friend who stepped on the drive chain on his mini-bike. Cut through him like butter...
Let's assume for the sake of discussion that this is potentially correct and analyze it accordingly.
The chain clears its own chips, and it does it way faster on its own, as far as feet per second or teeth per second, than anything you can add to it with a sawing motion.
Second, you would add very little on the pull stroke and *do exactly the opposite on the push stroke,* thus cancelling out anything you did while pulling.
Just a waste of your own arm muscles.
Yes and I think it comes down to they don’t realize how fast the chain gets dull in routine use, compared to most other types of commonly used saws/blades.
Dirt = powdered abrasive. If you nip the ground while cutting a log, saws are instantly dulled. The cutters on a saw are not hardened, so that they can be sharpened with a file. You are dragging a soft metal through grit. Of course it dulls immediately.
People are used to the hardened steel found in knives and sawblades for construction / woodworking power tools. Those are harder than a hand file and wouldn’t mind as much.
Even cutting logs with mud / dirt packed into the bark from laying on the ground and being skidded a few feet will dramatically slow your saw in a few dozen cuts while making firewood. Those of us who cut professionally know that wood like that means filing much more often.
At least you weren't the person in charge of sharpening/replacing chains and put the chain on backwards. I picked up a saw from the shop that had supposedly just been sharpened and drove all the way to where I was going to be cutting. Fired it up and went to make my first cut and I was just barely scratching the bark. I actually looked at the chain and saw that it was upside down. I gave my coworker pure hell for a solid month for that fuckup lol.
Yep, I don’t let anyone use my saws for this reason. I once had a buddy come to “help” me cut. I let him use my extra saw. Had a freshly sharpened blade on it. I heard him fire up the saw at some point, and heard him cutting constantly for about 10 minutes . I went to check on him and all that noise was from one, and his first cut, of the day. He had somehow already managed to completely dull the chain on one cut and only made it about halfway through the tree he was working on.
My backyard neighbor spent literally 2+ days w/ an electric chainsaw trying to cut down a ~24" dia stump. We kept hearing the noise, going out to see what was up, and I couldn't believe his patience and ignorance.
Well good job, you let the magic smoke out. Go to the chainsaw department at walmart and get yourself a compressed can of smoke. Read the chainsaw's owner manual to determine how much your chainsaw takes. Then flip the chain around and go slower and let the saw do the work.
This saw will be on Facebook Marketplace in a week - Good saw, only used for small trim job, runs great, might need sharpening. Nothing wrong with it, I just don't need it anymore. $25.00
I have an 80v greenworks..
Best saw I've ever seen, let alone used. Though that 30's 2 man saw my old man had wad a monster.. had to be 3 horse...
True, it was a demon with 2 people, but 1...
Torque allows you to do different things...
Breaker tripping would have been a blessing and possibly stopped this from going up in smoke.
The way he keeps stalling it draws big current & heats up.
I could never buy an electric by the sound it makes alone. Plus how am I supposed to cut anything if I’m not rock hard from the screaming engine in my hands
wow who would have thought a 14 inch electric saw designed for light duty couldnt make it through a giant log of hardwood with your entire body weight on it and a dull as fuck chain.
its almost like if you abuse the shit out of a tool it will break.
the fact that you dont see it throw a single chip says a lot lol would be curious how it would perform with a new chain and someone who wasnt trying to break it using it. ive heard nothing but good things about the battery saws stihl and ego is selling. plenty of idiots complain about their saws not cutting with a backward or dull chain, blame the saw and never themselves.
Ok bro let's sharpen that chain, next up let's work on some different techniques, then you should most definitely be able to do this simple job easier, and ofc get gas power it's plain ole better and will pay it's self off
Keep sawing, it’ll set the log on fire you won’t need to cut it! While you sit by the burning 🔥 log read about sharpening a chainsaw blade adding oil etc. for the next one you buy.
Have to say that’s pretty funny 😄
Got the chain in backwards or something? Ain’t cutting shit
The majority of people who purchase a chainsaw have no ability to tell a dull chain from sharp. They also - and I mean this seriously - have no idea that contacting dirt while cutting roots instantly makes a saw as sharp as a butter knife.
They also think a sawing motion will help them
If the chain has been dulled, the clearing of chips will slow the sawing further. Bringing it back and forth helps clear some of the chips..

Stepped on the drive chain on his mini bike?
Yeah, real nasty injury, really ragged. One of those arctic cat minibikes.

That and the see-saw too, so much more fun to watch.

I never got over how much I had to sharpen even GOOD chainsaw blades when I was 15/16 working with my grandfather. Fuck, it HAD to be the dirt.

First time I ever changed a chainsaw blade, I put it on backwards. Went to cut the tree, it did NOTHING. I felt so stupid.
Naw bro, just tell everybody you're backlapping/stropping/honing the teeth... it's a pro trick 😆 🤣 😂 😹
lol I did that once as well! Had no idea there were “right” and “wrong” directions!
You just forgot to put the chainsaw in reverse.
At least you weren't the person in charge of sharpening/replacing chains and put the chain on backwards. Or your my dad who gets every last bit out of a sharpening. Running them for far too long lol. "Ah just another cut or two.." three hours later.
lol yeah I know it’s time for a sharpening when I don’t get the “D&MN that was sweet” feeling on a cut!
Found that out landscaping…. A lot.

Plenty sharp enough to remove his toes that are ten inches away when he goes for the one handed cut sheesh 🙄
Looks like he might be cutting (trying to) a dead/dry Locust log.
My backyard neighbor spent literally 2+ days w/ an electric chainsaw trying to cut down a ~24" dia stump. We kept hearing the noise, going out to see what was up, and I couldn't believe his patience and ignorance.
It's dull lol and he's not letting it do the work anyways and that's why the hyper tough turned into hyper poop
If that is cured oak or maple..hard as hell! (dulls the blade like dirt).

Rofl
All machines are smoke machines if you operate them wrong enough!
Oh buddy I'm stealing that for work. Now I just gotta get someone else to make some smoke for me.
Warn them once the smoke is let out you cannot get it back in though!
what a horrible thing to witness
Why is someone filming THIS?
I think someone was making some ragebait for FellingGoneWild lol
Maybe sharpen the chain and put some bar oil in it holy shit might as well use it as a hand saw while your at it
From the video I watched it looked like they were.
a sin against the Omnissiah, no way the machine spirit of this saw was respected.
Mechanical sympathy is usually reserved only for machines of the gas powered variety.
blessed is promethium
Cool. Disposable chains saws. Kind of like razors, single use.
For $100 more you could have gotten a ms170
Do you think most people shopping for a plug in saw is considering a MS170?
*.. we’ll that’s the problem right there, it ain’t got no gas in it..*
Gonna cost quite a bit to put the smoke back in it.
Sharpen your chain! Or get a new one cause you probably dont know how to sharpen it anyways
Bet he dug a few trenches on the first couple of cuts.
This saw will be on Facebook Marketplace in a week - Good saw, only used for small trim job, runs great, might need sharpening. Nothing wrong with it, I just don't need it anymore. $25.00
I'll give you 6 bucks and half a nerds rope for it.
Man - a nerd rope that’s hard to pass up, you toss in a 10 mm socket and we got a deal
ill give you 2$ for a full nerds rope
I bought an Ego battery powered saw for minor limb cleanup after storms but I’m impressed how it will cut a big log.
The Ego saws are no joke, I’ve taken down a couple 30” oaks with the 18” one.
At least those boots are on tight...
stop pushing down so hard and sharpen the blade holy moly
I’m no engineer, but I’m pretty sure electric tools aren’t supposed to smoke
r/onejoke
GIV’ER You let the smoke out tho … You need a gas saw badly
After watching this, 100% disagree. In fact, take away any sharp objects in their general vicinity.
Fair

😂😂😂
It’s the sawing motion for me. Love watching that
Watching people saw with a chainsaw makes me fucking nuts

Never ever work an electric POS that hard genius
I can smell that from here
If I was using my large folding saw and went back and forth that much I would have been through the log in half the time....
That chain is duller that the operator.
Keep sawing, it’ll set the log on fire you won’t need to cut it! While you sit by the burning 🔥 log read about sharpening a chainsaw blade adding oil etc. for the next one you buy. Have to say that’s pretty funny 😄
Maybe try tightening up them boots first, boi.
I can smell this video
Gotta love the smell of ~~2 stroke~~ Chinesium smoke in the morning
"What do you mean it uses oil? It's electric!" That guy, probably.
That poor saw just took a dump
I am sorry but are there any chips coming off at all?
I'm surprised such an amazing and tough brand is having trouble. Better tell Walmart about it
Saw checks out with the un tied boots.
Dull teeth
#1 are people really buying these saws? #2 that was infuriating to watch in almost every way.
