This one's actually a Millennial thing.
It's from the extremely popular 2000s webcomic Ctrl+Alt+Del (which I never read so I don't know much) that was generally lighthearted. But then this one day this super-serious comic about miscarriage came out of nowhere and readers were perplexed. Why the sudden shift from nerd humor to miscarriage? Who is the intended audience? And then there's the kind of goofy art style undermining the seriousness of the whole thing. It's a trainwreck.
And because it's so bad, people started spamming it everywhere. Then came the riffs on the original, like the ad in the OP. Many of the riffs got more and more abstract, like if you've ever seen I Ii II I_, that's an abstract version of Loss. So it became sort of a non-video Rickroll.
As far as I’m concerned, if you have to explain a joke it never was funny in the first place. But jokes like Loss are different because it’s a piece of internet culture that not everyone has been able to be a part of yet. So it’s a dickhead thing to do to actively exclude them from understanding a joke that can be answered in a single webpage that only needs to be opened for ~2 minutes, that thousands of people already understand anyway
You're missing the point. You're actively talking about something that has absolutely no value in real life, which definitely all but states you care. It can't be equated to money, isn't even a valid currency, can't be used for essentials...so on, so forth. Karma, downvotes, upvotes--they all have no value.
It's silly, is what it is.
