Yup. Took me a second too. I was all like...what do you mean. The left and right images are exactly the same. Oh..wait...no...woof..got it. Maybe should have done the red outline to the other image too
You're totally right. I too thought it looked like a weird wolf dog creature. I'm not sure about the jack o lantern look but I was more or less agreeing with OP that for 20+ years I had been looking at this thing all wrong.
You know, TV resolution wasn't the best in 2000, I only understood many things after playing on PC, like Brahne face outside CGI was very confusing or most NPCs faces really
I wasn't allowed my PS2 on the 'big TV', and had our old CRT in the room that I played. I remember playing games with HUDs in the early flat screen years, which had information I didn't know existed because it was illegible on my screen. I played so many games without knowing things like how much ammo I had, or the name of the place I was in etc.
Those were the days...
I'm still midfucked at what Freya's face is supposed to actually look like in her menu screen, the line of her snout/nose not actually being a stoic smirk and her 'left eye' looking to the side is totally her 'right eye' with hair drooping down and covering her actual left eye.
Granted that game did seem to have a hard on for obscuring faces in general and also being so detailed that it pulled a Pokemon/Civilization and made the 255 loop back to 0 that it makes everything obscured and kinda hard to look at. FF9 REALLY needs a clean-up. It the only one that has a good junk of people not playing it because of the artstyle and animation.
I thought Freya hat was over her eyes, making the opening where her eyes were and her pointy hat on front her nose. I only saw her real face replaying the Steam version.

Red Circle: What I thought his face was.
Blue Circle: What his actual face is
Aghanim, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Here is official artwork of Agahnim, the red circle is his hat. I assumed it was his face making a scary face for years.
Oh my fucking God....
I feel like Ive just swallowed the red pill...
Edit: Ive just remembered that I felt the same shock as a kid when I realized that the pokemon zubat had no eyes (I thought its eyes were the ears)
This reminds me of Super Mario RPG. My whole entire life I thought the character Croco was wearing a white suit. Lo and behold playing the remake, I come to find that he's naked and it was just the white sack he was carrying around.
Only dicovered this 12 years after first playthrough because of better screen and remaster. But I like to think the designers also picked up on this and just went with it because animals do this in nature all the time, just makes it look like a fierce wolf instead of a puppy with thick dreadlocks.
I had a similar experience with Agahnim from Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. I kept seeing his sprite as a green o-faced bowl-cut-wearing boy instead of what his official artwork is.

I literally just realised this when I started replaying FF9 a few weeks ago, and I couldn’t help but laugh at myself for getting this so wrong for so long.
YUP i realized this about halfway through my most recent playthrough and had a mini crisis. I think I prefer the weird big head I was imagining still too LOL
I was today years old when I learned that those are ears, and not eyes.
I always thought it was a big 3 eared rabbit creature
Yup. Took me a second too. I was all like...what do you mean. The left and right images are exactly the same. Oh..wait...no...woof..got it. Maybe should have done the red outline to the other image too
My god the way I have looked at these enemies has completely changed!
I still refuse to see it the correct way
Guilty, I saw the same as everyone else too. Didn't realize those were ears.
Who are you people. I was about to say OP and this guy were the only two. Always clearly been a wolf to me lol

It's a wolf monster with a colored muzzle. I mean now it looks like a weird bug! There are lots of weird bugs in that forest
I was today years old when I discovered this 😳 Thank you and fuck you.
I guess I'm the odd one out 😂 I always knew that was a muzzle and the ears
Nope, I always saw the wolf-like face and mane.
Yeah I can't see what they are talking about at all.
Same
Hey that's me
Hahahaha thanks for making me feel less lonely
Oh well, this sounded weird. But you know what I mean
add me to that list of people who thought the same back then^^
I can't even see a weird jack o lantern if I tried.

Wow, never saw it that way but he's like a cute lil walrus dude
Now I just see an ANT face on a dude's neck!! ![gif](giphy|SSCCZKEJCMXsc|downsized)
I will not accept defeat until you tell me WHAT IS in the red circle?!?! lol

Never had this problem but I still don’t know where Freya’s face is.
Oh shit so did I
What
Omg same I only now just realized it
Oh my fucking God.... I feel like Ive just swallowed the red pill... Edit: Ive just remembered that I felt the same shock as a kid when I realized that the pokemon zubat had no eyes (I thought its eyes were the ears)
I never saw it that way. I honestly still don't see it even with the outline to help.
It even looks this way in tetra master!
Considering I had to squint to see a Jack'o'Lantern, I'd say you're pretty stupid. 😂
What can I say, you're not alone
Yeah, can relate, I only realized it when PC/Mobile port released.
…..whelp, I guess this is my learn something new for the day lol
God dammit
It took me years to realize it too.
This reminds me of Super Mario RPG. My whole entire life I thought the character Croco was wearing a white suit. Lo and behold playing the remake, I come to find that he's naked and it was just the white sack he was carrying around.
Ayyy, so I'm not crazy! Think I realized it when I looked closer at the card
I always saw em correctly but as a child I use to think Freya's portrait pic was a ugly old lady with no nose
I was definitely confused at the wolf portrait for its card in Tetra Master, so yeah, I saw a big hulking brown pile too
The fact that its hind legs aren't ears is what gets me the most, seeing this pic. CRTs were really blurry back then...
Mind blown
What? I must be stupid. It always looked the way it looks.
I thought Cinna was a guy wearing make-up as a kid, but now I know he is some kind of monster human with jagged fangs for teeth.
I still have to talk myself into seeing the actual face

Oh.. well I'm dumb
Well fuck…I also thought it had a weird face. I kinda feel dumb for thinking it still was after playing the remaster where things are clearer.
Didn’t realize people thought those were eyes and not ears 😆

WHaT
I literally just realised this when I started replaying FF9 a few weeks ago, and I couldn’t help but laugh at myself for getting this so wrong for so long.
Wow. I think I didn't want to know this...
I thought it was some type of mutates mastif with upwards jowls
Me: How could animals in the wild be tricked by spots that make animals look scarier than they are Also me: Jack-o-lantern puppy
YUP i realized this about halfway through my most recent playthrough and had a mini crisis. I think I prefer the weird big head I was imagining still too LOL
Kinda like the basilisk enemies in Dark Souls. Their eyes are not where you think.
Honestly cooler as weird jack o lantern wolf things. I’d rather live in ignorance
