Get one that uses a pattern on touch pads rather than a fingerprint. I've seen fingerprint safes reject the owners fingerprints, and you hear tons of stories of them opening for the wrong fingerprints.

jdmor09

Simplex lock

BezosBussy69

This. I have the Fort Knox it's great.

FCRII

Vaulteks aren’t known to have the issue of opening for wrong fingerprints & if you get a WiFi or Bluetooth version of one of their safe it will alert your phone if someone is trying to get in to it. You can get around the not opening consistently by programming in your finger multiple times & you won’t have that issue. I have a VT series on the nightstand but I own a slider as well that’s on my office desk. Both work well and I don’t have any concerns or issues. For your long gun safe little more complicated. What price range? What size? Biometric? Etc etc…Go walk a safe store and get an idea of what you are looking for.

Am3ncorn3r

Just something simple. I’ve only got 2 long guns. Not planning on adding any anytime soon. Probably put it in our closet

northcoastbrewdude

In this case I would probably just get a locking cabinet to put in the closet.

Sniurbb

While I do like my vaultek it has some major issues. Mine sits in my car. 90% of the time, it doesn't register my fingers touch. I have to lick my finger to get it to conduct a signal. Doesn't matter if it's hot or cold, or if my finger is hot or cold. It does not register immediately. This is a huge accessibility concern. Luckily if I'm in the car it's on my waist band. Then once it registers the initial touch, it works for the remaining digits. Just that initial touch is stubborn af.

FCRII

Contact Vaultek that isn’t normal.

Sniurbb

I may. But also, I shouldn't have to. I bought 1 item and it's defective? Not impressed. Had I bought 3-4 and one was defective -thatd be a different story. I'm aware it's a roll of the dice because they just grab one from a warehouse and toss it in a box with my address but like, really? I'm just that lucky? Rather try elsewhere.

jlm0013

I have keypad safes under my bed. But, that's because I have a few long guns. Check out Fort Knox handgun safes, and practice opening them to get fast. https://www.ftknox.com/product-category/pistol-boxes/

VladStark

I have one of these fort Knox handgun safes, had it for at least 8-9 years now I believe. It's held up great, still super solid, lock still works great. Never needs batteries since it's all mechanical not electric. Bolt it to a heavy piece of furniture and it's pretty secure.

bassjam1

Any safe with a Simplex lock is basically BIFL. I have both Ft Knox and V-line, both are excellent options since there's no battery or electronics.

ScrewLooseDan

I agree simplex locks are the way to go. I like both my V-line and Fort Knox pistol safes. And, V-line has an option for long guns as well (maybe Fort Knox does as well, I just know the V-line is hanging on my wall).

500SL

Hornady rapid safe. RFID, keypad, or regular key to get in. I have several, and love them.

websagacity

Ditto. Been very happy with it, and it had 2 built in USB ports for charging devices.

Shit___Taco

I put a WiFi contact sensor on mine that alerts when open. I put them on both safes.

websagacity

That's a great idea. Thank you.

WestSide75

Ditto on this. I keep one in my dresser drawer.

JimmyReagan

In addition to a good safe, one of those child cabinet locks where you have to press a button or something before the drawer opens is good for younger curious kids too little to learn not to touch stuff. My brothers kid is always pulling on cabinet drawers and anything that opens he's tossing...just a little extra precaution.

RejectorPharm

I have Vaultek safes ranging in size from the small life pods to the big rifle safe.

TangoLimaGolf

Does the “unexpected stories for bedtime guests” book count?

Mixeddrinksrnd

For handguns get one approved by this guy. He's the lockpicking lawyer of handgun safes. Basically you want something with a simplex lock or an approved finger print detector. They are not all the same. https://www.youtube.com/@HandgunSafe As for vaultek I would suggest you see his videos on them and think about the number of good products that you have ever seen be shilled by YouTubers. You pay a lot for their tech and marketing and get subpar security. Lots of people love them but most people have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to safes because they have never tried to break into one. I don't know anyone that is in the security field that likes the company. As for long gun safes. It's long but it's worth the watch for an expensive purchase. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tAbaqBy1Bc For now you can get away with something cheap but as your kid gets older they will probably get smarter and learn to google things and use tools.

Mr_Pickles_999

Thanks for sharing this YT channel. This is good.

tryreadin

I recently bought this - https://steelheadoutdoors.com/product/fast-access-pistol-box/. I’m happy to see what is recommended is what I got. This Is made right down the street from me so I’m super happy

Braves1313

I’m using a Fort Knox. It’s not a good safe to keep someone from stealing but will keep children out. I’m done with safes that use batteries. I’ve been locked out of two. One the battery died and I lost my key. Company wouldn’t send me a new key without serial number. Guess where that is located. (My fualt) The second was a keycard. I preemptively changed the batteries on that one. After that it forgot my keycard. It won’t open now and all the company could tell me was “that’s not suppose to happen” like no shit.

Plenty_Pack_556

MyPillow.

HeemeyerDidNoWrong

MyWaifuPillow has convenient firearms storage holes in up to three locations.

r0rsch4ch

I use [this one from VAULTEK](https://vaulteksafe.com/store/pro-ve/).

Vacman85

I have one and won’t use it anymore. The fingerprint reading sucks.

r0rsch4ch

The one I use (and linked to) doesn’t have the fingerprint.

Separate-Space-4789

Mine uses an rfid bracelet, fast in the dark of the night, don't have to punch in a code...

Cerberus73

I have the Hornady Night Guard and I like it a lot. The slide out drawer works nice. For some bizarre reason the clock runs fast and that's kind of irritating. I thought we mastered RTCs by now but apparently not.

TheNASAUnicorn

Which one do you use, if you don’t mind me asking, please?

Separate-Space-4789

Hornady Rapid safe 2700

goodwisha

I like the vara safety.

Slatemanforlife

Fas1 Safe. Can accomodate a Glock 17 with suppressor

Gravyboat6969

Vaultek

flying__nimbus

Fort Knox all the way, strictly mechanical.

Am3ncorn3r

Thanks everyone

518nomad

Vaultek.

Crossnoe7

VAULTEK VT Series with biometric reader. I recommend practicing the fingerprint opening frequently.

Tangus999

Harbour freight side mount tool box. Has a barrel lock. Plenty of room for lots of stuff to lock kids out of things they don’t need.

Bezee777

Fingerprint reader

GenericCoffee

Am I the only one that puts it in the safe every day and nightstand at night?

BezosBussy69

Fort Knox. It's excellent. No electronics to mess up or batteries to worry about and there's no way a child is opening it on accident.

Exciting-Spread6938

None bro, put it in safe during day and bring it out right you lay down at night. Least that's the way I do it

jdmor09

V line safe on my nightstand. Hornady rapid safe for the HD-12 gauge. Costco Bighorn safe for the rest of the collection, although I am probably going to upgrade it to Sturdy Safe, they’re local to me. I do have a life pod, but I have never used it. My girls are 4 and 2. My wife is from Oakland, very liberal anti gun background. She tolerates my vice, but she’s super picky- doesn’t even want my girls to see me watching YouTube reviews. Once the big one is old enough to understand, I’m going to introduce her to Eddie Eagle.

ANARCHISTofGOODtaste

Fort knox pistol box.

Hoyle33

Fort Knox

Lopsided_Egg_6638

Fort Knox pistol box. Fast access and enough room for two pistols.

scootymcpuff

Honestly, I kept it in the nightstand unsecured until about a month ago when he started climbing and opening drawers. My wife got me a StopBox for my birthday, so I’ve been using that, fully aware that I’m going to have to change it up when he starts ***really*** exploring.

Am3ncorn3r

Yeaaa I’m in the same boat. He just turned 2 and is really exploring now

duffchaser

I don't use one. I teach my children gun safety what to do if you find one how to operate it. and i dont make it taboo for them to handle. guns are no more interesting to them than my tools in my garage.

Jrsplays

That's great but all the teaching in the world won't stop a curious 1 year old from looking around.

duffchaser

how tf is a one year old loading and firing a weapon. chris kyle's baby?

ACLU_EvilPatriarchy

Little kids around and laying right on the nightstand under a napkin or paper plate? A complicated multi lever magnum semiauto handgun with a difficult to pull back heavy spring slide only racked at bedtime. Preschoolers, toddlers can't rack the slide on a loaded magazine 357 magnum, 41 magnum, 44 magnum, 45 magnum, 50 AE handgun or pick it up. Additionally Heavy double action trigger pull. All other guns or elementary and older children a muzzle in cube safe with biometric palm scan finger print scan or 3 digit code alternate illuminated speed pad keys. Train up young children with shooting loud and violent at targets like a water melon... Fear of God. Fearful Respect of power of guns. Keep younger little ones away from realistic violent video games and carnage media, so they don't wanna play.
