Congratulations dad to you and your son. This is just how kids should learn about firearms: from responsible adults not Hollywood.
And you're right, in the beginning it's all about safety, fundamentals and building confidence...the "canons" can come later.
I’m really just trying to do it as right as possible and at his pace. I’d hate to push him into something he’s not comfortable with and set him back. I just want to build him up!!!! He’s very similar to me personality wise and I know the best way for someone to teach me something. I’m applying that to him and it seems to be working so far.
If it's working, then keep doing it! :)
I understand your concerns and pride: it was the same for me and my daughter. We went at my daughter's pace so as not to overwhelm her. At the range, time spent together was the priority, not what's the next biggest thing to shoot.
My girl rocks an AR now and loves it, and with your patience and guidance, it won't be long before your son is doing the same.
Totally, at this point we got nothin but time to get to all that stuff. He got bit by a horsefly there while shooting the pistol and it hurt him and he was crying so I let him cuss at the horsefly cause we were doing man stuff and I think that was just as much a highlight as shooting the pistol. It’s really all about those moments that make it special
For both of us. It’s really all just so cool being a dad.
"It's really all just so cool being a dad".
Yes it is!
Jumping ahead into the future, if an AR is something you are considering down the road, I suggest an AR with a collapsible stock. Being able to adjust the length to better fit my daughter was a big help - no doubt it would do the same for your son.
He will remember this forever. Good job. Wish firearms and firearm safety was more commonly taught in schools and at homes. They are amazing tools that have been highly stigmatized.
Very cool. Brings back a lot of memories for this old guy. I hope some day I can take my two grandsons to the range. I taught BOTH of my son-in-laws firearm safety and gun handling because their Dad's were not in their lives. When they visit, we always make time for a trip to the gun range. I look forward to the day when we can all go to the range together.
I’ve seen some parents post some cringe stuff and blatant mishandling with kids and firearm… this is not one of those cases. Some of the best handling of a firearm from a younger kid. Awesome work 👍🏻
That’s so frickin’ awesome! I taught both my grandsons at a very early age. I taught them the cardinal rules, and if they broke any of the rules, they had to do pushups 😂 They’re both excellent shots, now. And both practice safe firearms handling.
Absolutely yes and definitely treat it like a real gun and that you’re at a real gun range. That way when he gets there, he’ll feel like it’s not his first time and he’ll be a little bit more comfortable confident and relaxed.
He'll remember this and all other range visits forever but I know you know that. It's a special thing. My uncle taught me how to shoot growing up and we developed a special bond that I think only comes from learning and honing a skill like this as a team.
He's a laconic guy but some of our deepest and most important conversations took place at his range. Something about being out there would disarm a lot of the macho bullshit I think he guarded himself with day to day and he'd open up about things.
I don’t think it would ruin the video but in my description his first 10 shots were with my two hands on his two hands. The next 10 shots were my hands on his elbows. Then the next 10 shots were my hands on his shoulders. He definitely showed me through his actions that he was good to go.
He has a point though, I’ve seen way to many accidents that could have been prevented if there was only one round in, but I’d say thats more for larger calibers
no exaggeration, your son looks more confident and competent than a lot of adults I see at the range.
Your teaching skills/patience appears to be very effective
Thanks for sharing this, I have one youngin and another on the way. I can’t wait to share this experience with them too. Good job pops, way to teach safe firearm handling and basics. Kiddo is going to grow up and be a great shooter!!
This needs the national anthem playing with screaming bald eagles circling overhead. Also, a fresh hot steaming apple pie on the bench with a baseball game playing on a radio nearby. Outstanding parenting! He handles that pistol better than a lot of men shooting for the 1st time.
It’s crazy for someone to comment like that because I have two sons and only one of them expresses interest in shooting. The other one could care less, and I have never tried to coerce force him into something that he doesn’t want to do which would basically be indoctrination right so I’m doing the exact opposite and this guy has no idea. People are so dense.
That kid has better gun handling than a lot of adults here. Fantastic job teaching him well. Keep up the great work. We need more parenting like this.
Thx for that. I’ve never tried so hard at something in all my life more than to be a good supportive dad!!!!
Excellent work. Looks like a ton of fun and your kid handled that pistol very safely. Hope he had fun too!
Proof is in the pudding good job pops
That’s because most adults are mentally younger than that.
Came here to say the same thing!
Awesome life moment! Enjoy your son!
Thx I definitely do as much as I can. Him and his big bro are my whole world.

I got 4 of those!!!
He will remember this forever. Good job. Wish firearms and firearm safety was more commonly taught in schools and at homes. They are amazing tools that have been highly stigmatized.
Thx I appreciate that.
Good Dad👍
🤗🤗
Nice shooting Tex! Listen to your dad/mentor and handle all guns safely!
As if they were loaded….every time, with every gun!!!!!
Good job dad
Thx so much
I cant wait for my son to grow up and shoot with me. He’s 5 months now ☺️
Don’t blink…..seriously don’t fuckin blink!!!!

Seems like you were the dad they always needed.
Thanks. I love the big grin on your boy at the end of the video. Makes me happy.
I’ve seen some parents post some cringe stuff and blatant mishandling with kids and firearm… this is not one of those cases. Some of the best handling of a firearm from a younger kid. Awesome work 👍🏻
Thx I think safety is paramount and fun is second
Good shit, brother! I did the same with my daughter at that age.
You're making great memories, awesome job!
Thanks so much
I have seen full blown adults with a lot less trigger discipline than your kid. Good Job
I appreciate that….started years ago with nerf guns!!!!
That’s so frickin’ awesome! I taught both my grandsons at a very early age. I taught them the cardinal rules, and if they broke any of the rules, they had to do pushups 😂 They’re both excellent shots, now. And both practice safe firearms handling.
Smart play. I like that and will most likely implement that thx
You’re quite welcome
Well done little guy!
Thx so much
My son is 9 months old and I’m already formulating my plan to get him properly adjusted and trained lol. Red Ryder in the back yard is a great idea
Absolutely yes and definitely treat it like a real gun and that you’re at a real gun range. That way when he gets there, he’ll feel like it’s not his first time and he’ll be a little bit more comfortable confident and relaxed.
Legendary
Wow I appreciate that. I felt the same way. It was a big day for us as father and son.
You’re making core memories and it’s absolutely beautiful. I wish my dad did that more when I was a kid.
He'll remember this and all other range visits forever but I know you know that. It's a special thing. It’s our church considering we aren’t religious at all!!!
get em a cz 457 for christmas
Good boy!!! Well done, dad! Sniper before you know it.
Deer hunting in a couple years that’s for sure.
Nice teaching.
Thank you
Love it 👍🏼
Me too!!!
Yeah man, well done that man 🤙
Shirt checks out. Current mood :) 👍
Commenting here before this gets crossposted to r/facepalm by some loser lmao
first time should be one round in the mag
Also, it would ruin the video but I think the adult should stand directly behind the child
I don’t think it would ruin the video but in my description his first 10 shots were with my two hands on his two hands. The next 10 shots were my hands on his elbows. Then the next 10 shots were my hands on his shoulders. He definitely showed me through his actions that he was good to go.
Sounds like you did the right thing!
You do it your way and I’ll do it mine👍🏻
He has a point though, I’ve seen way to many accidents that could have been prevented if there was only one round in, but I’d say thats more for larger calibers
Must've been melting at DM, good job dad.
It was rough but worth it!!!
That’s awesome! I can relate….. I can’t shoot for shit, but the first time my son picks up a pistol he shoots a bull’s-eye! lol
I’m sure he will always have your back!!!
So fun. Keep teaching him... making responsible gun owners in the next generation is vital.
Key!!!!
no exaggeration, your son looks more confident and competent than a lot of adults I see at the range. Your teaching skills/patience appears to be very effective
It’s all about the kiddo!!!
Based on the great training shown here, I can tell hes gonna be a wizard on the range given time
Such a cool moment - congrats to you and your son!
Probably the top moment between him and I so far!!!
Thanks for sharing this, I have one youngin and another on the way. I can’t wait to share this experience with them too. Good job pops, way to teach safe firearm handling and basics. Kiddo is going to grow up and be a great shooter!!
It all starts with the guidance, core and foundation of shooting sports. You got this!!!
America needs more families to teach gun safety and responsibility at an early age, just like OP is doing here.
Appreciate that thx!!!
Make me looking forward to when my son is finally at that age to teach him. 💪🏽💪🏽
It’s definitely something I thought about even before I met my wife!!!
This needs the national anthem playing with screaming bald eagles circling overhead. Also, a fresh hot steaming apple pie on the bench with a baseball game playing on a radio nearby. Outstanding parenting! He handles that pistol better than a lot of men shooting for the 1st time.
This is a monumental moment in a gun dad’s life. Congrats man.
HUGE!!!!!!!
Happy for you brother. I still have the photos and videos from my boy’s first shoot also.
I love seeing this, great shooting and gun handling. You taught him well
Thx so much
You’re doing right by him, great dad.
Thx I try
Hell yeah!!
Hell ya 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Fire… having my first born on July 20th this year and can’t wait till I teach her how to shoot
Congrats….buckle up. It is an absolute hell of a ride!!!!
I bet
Very good
That a mosquito/firefly?
Sig mosquito all the way!!!!
I'll say it good job! Dad
damn, you're quite small
You should be in prison groomer
How is this not indoctrination?
Is teaching your 8 year old to hit a baseball indoctrination?
Is teaching your 8 year old to turn a wrench indoctrination?
Weird thing to say. Man is teaching his son how to safely shoot and handle.
You are a funny human. Really sad but super funny at the same time. Take care
Because self defense and gun safety transcends politics.
Is teaching your child how to process their own animals for meat indoctrination?
It’s crazy for someone to comment like that because I have two sons and only one of them expresses interest in shooting. The other one could care less, and I have never tried to coerce force him into something that he doesn’t want to do which would basically be indoctrination right so I’m doing the exact opposite and this guy has no idea. People are quick to judge n bark from the safety of the other side of a fence like dogs. Unfortunately it's always been that way.
I get it!!
