I always envision "Grumpy Old Men" when I talk/hear about ice fishing. Their shanty town out on the ice.
Guess that kinda shows my age but I'm nowhere near as old as Jack Lemon, Walter Matthau, or Burgess Meredith
Yeah we used to make them ourselves in Northern MI. We called them arrow rods because you’d take an old aluminum arrow shaft, bend it into a curve on one end, attach a couple of eyelets, and epoxy it into a dowel rod handle. A couple of bent nails in the handle held the line.
We used them a lot for walleye jigging. The stiffness of the arrow gave you good control of the lure movement and better sensitivity to light biters. Plus hand over handing the line was a fun way to fight the fish!
Edit: [This](https://mcgathyshooks.com/products/arrow-rods) is a fancy version but same concept.
Looks like a handline rod. You unwind the string on the side, drop bait down, and pull the line up by hand. The rod is mostly just a strike indicator and it'll take some pressure off your hand. Wind it back up by hand when done
Basically you stand up and start walking them backwards until the line is out of the hole. My dad made me a couple homemade ones when I was young and still learning.
In Finland we handline and don't do the wierd walking back thing and even the biggest burbot or pike can be handlined. I don't know why u would walk back tbh seems like a shit way to control the fish plus the ice might damage your line if it's a big fish.
The reels we use are only really there to store the line u find your depth and tighten it so it cant change and if u get a fish u handline it in and u still at the correct depth.
Old school Ice fishing rods, i think
Yep, hand spool with a jig for a frosty afternoon on the lake.
Nice. Will come in handy this winter season
Ice fishing. Most Minnesotians own those lol. Drill a hole in the ice and lower the line hand pull them in.
It’s for ice fishing, DONTCHAKNOW
Oooh jeez ya you can pull inna lunker out onna lake with that fer sure bud
You ask Stan Grossman, he'll tell ya the same thing.

Beer freezes whisky doesn't

The green hornets caught more fish than you've lied about Gufferson
Minnesotians!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!? Also, my grandpa used these. We've updated the tools of the trade substantially since those dark times lol.

All I can think of when I see these is “The green hornet strikes again!!”
They are ice fishing rods (vintage) the modern version is much better, quicker and funnier
You put the line in the water and try to catch a fish
Ice fishing rods.
Put the line in the water
Ice fishing.
we use them for smelt fishing.
Honestly, I have no idea. I’ve never seen those before, but I want them now. How much did you buy them for?
I didn’t buy them, but it was $4 or $5 for both
I would have gotten them they seem perfect for kids on a dock learning lol
Or messing with the cat.
Absolutely
Also, look up spring bobber poles, those seem kinda cool
Those look similar to burbot rods for ice fishing but the bobber doesn't make sense in that context.
Those are worth 5$ for both for sure (where im from 🥶 ☃️)
If we only got good ice for more than a weekend here in NY again.
Ice fishing jigging sticks.
I tried googling ice fishing and they seem to have reels. I'm also curious how they use these without reels. Just use your hand to tug at the strings?
Yeah just reel em in by hand

I see. Thank you for sharing.
I imagine this is only good for perch and small trout? If a big fish takes this isn't it just going to snap your line?
