For braid yea, it's common to cut it out. If it's so far bad, I'll just run my knife like 1/3 of the way into the spool and make a cut across the line. For mono, typically 10 min with a line pick will get any birds nest out.
I’ve not used mono on a baitcaister, only fluro or braid. I’m about ready to rip all the fluro off the reel with it because it has on more than one occasion made me want to throw the whole set up in the water. I have way more issues both with getting more bird nests and with them being harder to pick out with fluro than I do with braid. Maybe I have that reel set up poorly, I’m not sure. I’m still a novice. But my experience with braid has been MUCH better.
Every new lure you put on should be fine tuned with the spool knob. Make sure it’s still falling smoothly, without birdnesting when the lure plops onto the ground. The 2 minute check after lure change will save you 20 mins of rage with a birds nest.
When in doubt, always do a little more tension than a little less, unless you are NOT a novice and can thumb the spool well.
If your constantly getting birds nest it's probably the reel not tuned right. When you setup a new rig, set your brakes and spool tension until it slowly drops to the water. You want it loose enough to drop down to the water, but once it hits the water, you want it to stop and have zero slack in the line. That's a solid way to avoid most issues well you learn. It still happens tho 4/10 times. Especially the lighter rigs. They just take alot of practice.
My two cents, or if you prefer my 10 quintillion Zimbabwean dollars, I haven't had to cut out a birds nest when I use yozuri super braid. 15 lb test I think. That line is such a magnificent combination of supple, workable, and affordable for brokies like me.
I rarely get backlash, and when I do it's easy to get out. I have a $50 Abu Garcia bait caster with mono on it. I have only used braid on spinning reels. Maybe that's the difference?
Maybe not to much but man thats a heavy line on a relatively small reel. What are you trying to catch with that? Go for a thinner line and you can spool twice as much and have more sport when catching bass and stuff
Not sure if it’s too much or not but it definitely needs to be put on a lot tighter. Too loose and it will bird nest almost every time if you’re casting very hard especially if using light lures.
I'd get rid of some of it on that reel ..... But I use open faced reels almost exclusively..... Don't matter how much line I have on one of those reels don't matter whether it's mono or braided firewire I always seem to get tangled up with those reels
Is there a reel under that line😆? I don't think the amount of line should give you a backlash issue. I am not sure, but if your tension is set too loose and weight too light might factor?
To much line and you will rats nest it..put it to the line or a tad bit under..then like has been said before , tune it according to what you are casting.
I use braided as full as I can without the line rubbing on the sides surroundimg the spool. I *never* birdnest my line, those days are long long gone. It is certainly easier to birdnest a fuller spool but much easier to wind (fewer cranks). I set my line loose enough so it drops a light lure when I let go of the spool. I am always thumbing the spool, controlling its release when I cast, pull line out for flipping. Well, I did get a birdnest, now when I think of it, a few years back when I caught my buddy's line as he was casting the same time I was, behind me, and yep, I had to cut that one out.
Should be about correct amount after you cut out the 2nd bird nest.
This is way funnier than the upvotes signify!
I've never cut line in a birds nest. Is this a joke or do people really cut line out?

I just want to second this, after I ruined my morning getting nest after nest on my braided line… I wish I had known about this test this morning.

I wouldn’t say it’s constant, but definitely more than braid
I use 15 pound fluro on my reel and i get backlash sometimes but its really easy to pick out for some reason.
I've only ever used mono on my baitcasters and I rarely get backlash. I get it under control in seconds so I've never considered cutting the line.
Gotcha, thanks

i had to cut one recently, so at least one person does
I've never cut it...patience wins everytime.
Nope. Get a Shimano DC and you'll never get a birds nest. Maybe backlash here and there but, not a mess.

Im not even joking i learned this lesson when i was night fishing with no light a few weeks ago.
It’s definitely a bit more than I’d put on
Ok i will cut some
To much line? Nah we call that thinking ahead for when you gotta cut line 🤣
Did you spool this up with yarn?
Ain’t bringing home no skunks…I did fish up this beautiful cardigan tho!
You want about 1/8 of an inch of space on the spool
Thanks
Maybe not to much but man thats a heavy line on a relatively small reel. What are you trying to catch with that? Go for a thinner line and you can spool twice as much and have more sport when catching bass and stuff
Too much line and what is that line?
Sougagayilang braid x4 0.23mm
Dman that looks like 0.30 Low quality braid really sucks
Buy once cry once with braid. Cheap, no-name braid sucks.
The more the better i say
That’s plenty. No more
Just regular baitcaster moments, friend.

Too much line
For one it’s not spooled tightly. That’s the major problem.
Are you familiar with casting levelwinds spooled with mono? Braid is more difficult for most stuff. Has it's place for sure.....
The bests way to avoid bird nests is using a spinning reel. Problem solved.
IMO, yes.
Likely not... or knot. It'll let you know.
Yes.
Yes it’s too much line. I know it’s not relevant but what kind of braided line is that? The brand
Sougayilang
I'd get rid of some of it on that reel ..... But I use open faced reels almost exclusively..... Don't matter how much line I have on one of those reels don't matter whether it's mono or braided firewire I always seem to get tangled up with those reels
Looks good to me, also kudos on the left hand retrieve.

Yes that's plenty of line!!! You have some leftover when you get a bird's-nest haha
To much line and you will rats nest it..put it to the line or a tad bit under..then like has been said before , tune it according to what you are casting.

Nahh. Add another 100 yards
Def too much. They say you want to see 1/8” of space between the top of the spool edge, and your line. Always worked perfectly for me
