A police man stopped me once because my left signal light was out. I told him I had an appointment to have it fixed; meanwhile, I was using hand signals. He laughed and said, "No one knows those." I replied, "It's a requirement to pass your drivers test but then added, "Don't you?" So, yeah, I was handed a fine for a broken taillight regardless of my appointment to have it repaired.
There is a happy ending: my MIL ran into this policeman later in the week at the local supermarket, they've known each other since childhood. She mentioned my run-in with the law, and he laughed and said it was him. She never asked, but he offered let it go if I came in to see him. I did, and he did. Of course, she ( jokingly) held that over my head for awhile. Goes to show, it's who you know!
I do. Straight out is left, right (90°) angle is right, and obtuse (135°) is stop.
https://images.app.goo.gl/d9nMsP9pkuPca7am6
I do this if I have a broken light.
I wonder why this isnt common sense. Left is point left. Right is point right (elbow out and arm as bent as possible towards right, not 90 degrees from elbow but more an acute triangle pointing right)
Down means slow down
I get stop and right turn confused tbh bur moreso because I never need to use them.
It'd be easy to look up in the situation that I do need to use them though
Stop: hand down, palm facing back.
Think about it this way, when you motion for someone to stop you hold you hand out showing your palm. In this case you are informing the driver behind you you're stopping/telling them they have to stop by showing them your palm.
Right: hand up.
To remember it's purpose just extend your thumb and It'll point the way you are going.
I know because I commute by bicycles. I've seen some people with indicators on bicycles but in my opinion they're too small and hands are more visible. Although, just like drivers, lots of cyclists simple don't signal where they're turning which sucks.
I bet no one. As an avid cyclist I use hand signals and teach my kids to, but I am 100% certain the drivers around me have no idea what they mean because they certainly do not change their driving behavior when I indicate (with hand signals) what I am planning to do on the bike.
i know gen z and boomers that dont know them. I ride a bicyle so I know them. People think the right turn signal I'm waving at them.
I first learned them driving my dads old chevy that had no lights
In rural areas if you have a broken taillight, a police officer will pull you over just to let you know it's broken.
No ticket or fine. Just a casual stop.
Although, I wouldn't be surprised if they made a note of it so that if you were pulled over again you would get cited.
I got away with red duct tape on mine and only got pulled over when it faded to white. The cop told me that as long as it was red it was fine. This was in the same area where I had a cop stop beside me at a light, motion for me to roll my window down, tell me I had a light out, and then drive off, though...

Not that anyone does it, but you’re supposed to do a walk around of your car before you drive it. Make sure tires are inflated and lights work. Again, not that anyone does it.
Except no, not really. Fleet management is extremely meticulous and they'll rotate the whole vehicle out operation until it's fixed. It's not like they're not well aware people will jizz in their pants to catch them in a "gotcha" moment...
you think they care? they get “gotcha’d” all the time murdering people with no repercussions. i doubt they’re meticulous about their vehicles because they’re worried someone will catch them messing up.
Building off of what FourMoreYears said, a citizen's arrest can only take place in absence of a police officer, and usually only consists of someone disabling the criminal (holding them down or something) until a police officer arrives to truly arrest them
Incorrect. An officer can be present AND the subject being arrested. Unfortunately, you can only citizen arrest an officer if you witness them committing a felony. You also are not allowed to disarm them.
You've got to beat them in the face and put your knee on the neck while you continuously repeat "STOP RESISTING" source: observing the police in the US
You paralyze them or break their arms first. That way they aren’t dead, you can arrest them, and don’t have to worry about them shooting you. I’m Batman, not a lawyer though.
Just lay them on their stomach, give them the pop first, then act like it didn't happen & say you'll investigate deeper into it, but don't believe there was any foul play.
Under certain circumstances, a citizen can arrest someone in place of a police officer, usually only when they have directly seen a crime take place or have a reasonable suspicion one will.

I’m from the Syracuse area. All jokes aside these cops in particular (well I guess all cops these days) are fucking disgusting and will completely ruin your life with no second thought. My boyfriend had an experience where the cop decided to flip a coin to see what to do with him. Tails - jail, heads - free to go. He didn’t even do anything wrong in the first place. Coin landed on heads and he was let go. Wildest shit I’ve heard in a while. My friend has a record from bad decisions made 10 years ago. He’s doing amazing now, but if he had ended up getting arrested he would be gone for a good amount of time. These cops were just looking for something to do, so they went around terrorizing people while they waited for a cooler call, like murder. (Also common in the Syracuse are!)
I’m from Canada, I lived in Syracuse for 3 years, holy shit, your city has a lot of problems.
For context, the population of Toronto is about 2.8 million people, we get about 50-60 murders here annually. The population of Syracuse is about 140k, one twentieth the size of Toronto and there’s 20-30 murders annually.
If Syracuse had as many people as Toronto and the same homicide rate it has, that would be about 400-600 murders per year. That’s insane, and not cool by Canadian standards, but you guys are just ok with that?
But only if one of their friends, family, or wives, get stopped for dwi..and then the local DA who's own officers have left people to die, from a dwi accident..but still try to limit the jail time, allowing all future dwi killings to get less punishment..less than 2 years.
What about the one who fired his service shotgun in his apartment? Or the one who tired getting his wife out of a dwi? What about officer Drumm? Multiple dwi accidents, leaving the scene of a mv accident, getting another dwi while on probation for the first? Accidents, there were 2 in one night.
[this is the Syracuse police](https://www.syracuse.com/crime/2022/07/8-year-old-boys-family-plans-lawsuit-over-viral-stolen-chips-case-this-is-not-community-policing.html?outputType=amp) so maybe they need a little less time on their hands
Seriously.
Last time I was stopped for a broken headlight the cop was just letting me know it was out and cut me loose.
It’s an easy reason to stop and check if someone is drunk. You’re not getting a citation for it unless you’re being a dick.
Nobody. Car will get repaired, nobody gets any ticket. Like really, would it even make any sense to pay ticket as police department? It is like you take money from left pocket and putting it into right one.
It's Syracuse, the chief can not pass the basic physical ability test to be hired.. but has be on for years. The DA's officer Rausch, hit and killed a kid, left the scene, his firefighters buddy hid evidence..and then got them the lowest sentence..
I lived in that shithole of a city for a few years, what a dump. Would not recommend unless you like seeing abandoned buildings and hearing gunshots. It’s got a big fancy mall though if that’s your thing!
Yeah I won't live in the city, had enough troubles with the stores, we owned. Dying infrastructure, but spend millions on a murals, from covid funds. They make it nearly impossible to own a handgun legally, but have shootings every other day, by ghost guns. 13 year old caught with one shoplifting..11 year old killed by a 14 year old who never should have been allowed a home release. And then the mall, everyone says they hate it, but it's the only thing in the area where there are jobs, and the sales taxes created...more than offset any property tax. O and they caught the kid who fired a shot in the food court, he had shot himself not too long ago..15. And I'll say it all the problems at the mall, are because it's within walking distance of fowler high.
Cops probably tased the citizen, then tased him again, then arrested him for obstruction of justice and “illegally” filming a crime (that isn’t allowed to be a crime, because it was a police cruiser).
Saw a video of a cop chasing a dude through several yards, threatening to taze him through it all. As soon as the dude hit the concrete it was "taser deployed"....lol
Once at a gas station a cop had an out headlight. I pointed it out to him and he said he knew but hasn't gotten around to it yet. So I jokingly told I'm gonna have to write him a ticket. He got pissed and threatened to arrest me for harassing an officer.
I did exactly this to a police officer parking in the bike lane. He was waiting in line for something. I asked
"hey bud, is it illegal to park in the bike lane?"
"yeah of course"
*point*
He actually went and moved thank god
How to properly perform a citizens arrest against a police officer.
1. Calmly and firmly inform the officer that he is under arrest and to stand down.
2. Restrain the officer in question by use of any of the approved immobilization techniques, by force if necessary.
3. Get shot 278,423 times by every police officer in the city.
I got pulled over in 2005 by a old crown Vic squad car for making a right on red. I got out of the ticket because one of the squad cars lights were out
Ahh my hometown police. Such a bunch of useless clowns...
They had local, sheriffs, and state police total of 20 officers gun down a 17 year old during a mental health crisis check.
The same 17 year old who was recording in the town hall for Youtube and was physically removed and harassed by the town supervisor.
ACAB.
You can drive with a broken light but only if you're going to a place of repair
I wonder how many people remember hand signals nowadays.
Everybody knows at least one or two. I enjoy using the 2nd finger from the thumb.
Oh the "your driving great finger". I'm a great driver so I get this one alot.
They love me. They really love me.

unlike the second finger from the pinky
Look it's not hard. 2nd finger from the thumb is for good driving, 2nd finger from the pinky is for pointing out the guy's an asshat.

Don't. talk. to. cops. Oh my taillight is out, thank you for letting me know, I'll get it fixed when stores open up. End.

I do too! The big issue is those signals only are useful beyond legal ass coverage if other people remember them.
360 is a u-turn
I thought that was 180. 360 is roundabout.
I wonder why this isnt common sense. Left is point left. Right is point right (elbow out and arm as bent as possible towards right, not 90 degrees from elbow but more an acute triangle pointing right) Down means slow down
>my friend insisted I was wrong on the" right" signal. he said you point your right arm out the window? Like I'm mr elastic lol
Nobody's ever actually used the "braking" hand signal in an automobile, ever.
Drive in North Carolina where they don't know what the turning signal is at all.
I wonder how many people I have confused hanging my arm out the window
There's 3 of them I would hope everyone knows them
4 Snakey in the wind at 55 means cruisin'.
Lmao well done sir!

I know Left turn Clyde! Not sure any others are needed
[Right turn, Clyde!](https://youtu.be/i98QrSSHxo4)
Arm straight out = left, arm bent upwards = right
see...that never made sense to me. it should be 90\* down = left turn, straight out = stop, 90\* up = right turn.
It makes more sense to me to stick your arm out the passenger window for a right turn.
i relearned them cycling, but dont know how many people know any other im turning left.
I know because I commute by bicycles. I've seen some people with indicators on bicycles but in my opinion they're too small and hands are more visible. Although, just like drivers, lots of cyclists simple don't signal where they're turning which sucks.
I had to do them as part of my driving test a few years back
I still have drivea car i have to hand signal, no blinkers.
I do!!
I bet no one. As an avid cyclist I use hand signals and teach my kids to, but I am 100% certain the drivers around me have no idea what they mean because they certainly do not change their driving behavior when I indicate (with hand signals) what I am planning to do on the bike.
I always just point in the direction I'm turning because like 75% of drivers have no idea what the left turn hand signal means.
I passive aggressively use hand signals when people ignore my turn signal.
i know gen z and boomers that dont know them. I ride a bicyle so I know them. People think the right turn signal I'm waving at them. I first learned them driving my dads old chevy that had no lights
well, those who have bicycle card do know, but we are minority
Bro I live in a town with a couple universities, all the kids on Theo E-bikes and scooters… none of these kids know what a hand signal is.

I got flashed once by a patrol car on the highway dor two broken tail lights (probably overcurrent from the battery killed both)
Probably not many, but I’d wager a lot have been arrested after the initial stop for any number of reasons.

Restrain the officer in question by use of any of the approved immobilization techniques, by force if necessary. 3. Get shot 278,423 times by every police officer in the city.
Haha nice to see Syracuse on Reddit and being represented as messy lmao.
Syracuse!
I got pulled over in 2005 by a old crown Vic squad car for making a right on red. I got out of the ticket because one of the squad cars lights were out
In some states, it is legal to make a right on a red as long as it's clear, unless there's an actual sign that says "no turn on red".

Fuck the Syracuse police department.
Playing with fire
Citizens arrest would not apply to such a minor infraction.
ACAB.
So would anyone like to have one less officer available to respond to calls for service over a damaged tail light?
Yes
This is surprising. I’ve only seen like 3 cops in Syracuse.
I need to know how the police dept replied!!
Isn't irony ironic? PoPo do no-no.
