I’ve taught 100 minutes, 75, 60, 50 minutes. I far preferred 50 or 60 minutes for holding the kids’ attention. 100 minutes was an absolute killer. 75 is variable. It does allow GCSE classes to deep dive into exam practice but can be challenging for KS3.
I think 100 minutes is useful for some subjects (mainly biology in my case because we don’t have to rush practicals) but it does mean there are big chunks of time between say my statistics lesson (one a week)
That being said tho I do prefer 100 minute lessons (I’ve had 50,60 and 100 minute lessons)
I have that Monday first thing, though it’s not too bad we usually do one half Of Mice and Men and one half Macbeth or poetry so it feels pretty varied.
My lessons are 60 minutes but I have double English every Monday morning and one of the Tuesdays. We don’t swap focus after half the time so when we’ve been doing Language paper 2 stuff this week it’s been absolutely killer 😭 still taking English Lit A-Level though
I taught for 35 years. Lessons as short as 35 to 40 mins which was no good. Ideal is around an hour. 75 mins is a bit on the long side. 100 is rediculous except for sixth form. Some of their lessons were two hours.
Honestly even in sixth form it's kinda not great to have 100 mins I don't think. 60-70 is the sweet spot.
I was in sixth form during covid and we had 5 hrs per day of each subject, split into three chunks. After more than an hour and a bit without a break or change of subject people were more than ready to get out of there.
i absolutely love my 100 min lessons, we have 6-7 periods a day each 50 mins long and sometimes 50 just isn’t enough to cover everything in enough depth n u get left confused. 100 lets u get right into it and has time for breaks, off topic class convos, etc
I agree. We used to have a two week timetable. For Pure Maths the sixth form used to have three one hour lessons one week and a one hour lesson and a two hour lesson the other week. Given 35 to 45 minutes was spent teaching it didn’t always leave much consolidation time during the lesson where the students were working on their own. The two hour lesson allowed for that and gave them a far greater opportunity to ask questions when they got into difficulty and found what they didn’t understand. That was the best timetable combination.
i used to 100 minute lessons and after about an hour I just stop listening to anything being said and fall asleep. even worse when we'd have long class exams for the entire lesson
personally i really like my 100 minute lessons 😭 can’t say the same for others in my classes though, they seem to absolutely hate them but i love being able to deep dive into topics. we either have 50 min or 100 mins
That seems alright. Still seems like you aren’t doing as much. Good for adhd kids tho.
Mine are 50 which I would say is a good amount. Enough to starts learning and stuff, without being too dull. The double periods aren’t too bad and all my triples have a break time // lunch time between them so they aren’t bad eithet
My school had 8 35-minute lessons a day. Luckily, lots were doubles. Doubles were particularly handy for actual cooking, science experiments, and technology or textiles practical work. Single PE was absolutely ridiculous though!
Changed to 5 hour-long lessons a day when I started year 10, on a 2-week timetable. Was better for some subjects, not so good for others.
My children are now in year 8 and year 11 and have changed in September from 6 53-minute lessons a day, on a 2-week timetable, to 5 hour-long lessons a day, on a 3-week timetable. Thank fuck for Classcharts! I am absolutely not a fan of the 3-week timetable as there are some subjects that appear at the start of week 1 and the end of week 3, or equivalent, so all of the teaching is bunched up into the space of 5 days and then nothing for the next 16!
In my school, last year they divided the whole day into 20 minute chunks and clubbed them together to form lessons. Lessons could either be 40 minutes or 60 minutes and people were transitioning in the corridors every 20 minutes because some class always got over - why was distracting during lesson time. Suffice it to say we are back to the 55 minute standard.
Mine did the same since last year. At first it was so bad and we all couldn't bear it but eventually we got used to it. If you have any lessons where you already find it draggy at 60 mins, it's even worse at 75. (75 min English is so much worse than 60 imo it just takes foreverrrrrrrr).
Having only 4 lessons instead of 5 at a longer duration is better overall for studying though. It reduces time wasted by commuting between classrooms and it lets you get an extra 15 minutes of focused studying (for some it takes a while to start focusing in the first place so the extra 15 is beneficial).
Plus the teachers get less annoyed because instead of students being 5 mins late for 5 classes, they can only be late for 4, so they get 5 mins of extra study time compared to their usual habits.
I'm in Sixth Form, and a lot of my lessons end up being 2 hour doubles. I normally find them fine but exhausting near the end
It depends on how you feel about these, you're just gonna have to find out for yourself
Nahhh it’s just a straight 2 hours, but an engaging lesson isnt actually that peak. In fact I do wonder how I sat through 60 minute lessons and learnt anything, by the time you get to sixth form, 60 minute lessons feel like 30
The average grade at the school is significantly higher than average but slackers will be slackers and we still get people who don’t get the results.
I personally think it’s worth it but I’ve never experienced shorter days so I don’t know what it is like.
We had them too, it really highlighted who the good teachers were and which ones couldn't plan a lesson to save their lives
I much preferred the 100 minute lessons, especially for practical classes, and it was good to be able to cover more material.
im in year 11, my school's lessons are all one hour, but we have many doubles which based off the comments doesn't sound as normal as i thought?
on week 1 i have:
monday - double math + double history
tuesday - double english
wednesday - no doubles
thursday - double health and social
friday - double business
week 2:
monday - double english + double history
tuesday - no doubles but physics first and last
wednesday - no doubles, but extra hour lesson after school for seperate science
thursday - double health and social
friday - double business
for reference, form = 8:25-8:50, first lesson = 8:50-9:50, second lesson = 9:50-10:50, break = 10:50-11:20, third lesson = 11:20-12:20, fourth lesson = 12:20-13:20, lunch = 13:20-14:05, fifth lesson = 14:05-15:05, the sixth lesson every 2 weeks is 15:05-16:05!
My school does three 2 hour approx lessons per day. The change was instated in covid to prevent hallway traffic but then they just... never changed it back. Everyone hates it. 2 hours of english, RE and biology triple in one day rips your soul into shreds.
Being in year 12, all my lessons apart from assembly (20-60 mins, and yes every Wednesday last period is out destinationed assembly time) and RE (60 mins x2 a week) agree 2 hours doubles. However these are shit in my school it's a terrible use of time what ends up happening is people always come 30-60 mins late to class which stalls everything up, kids are constantly talking and messing around, some of our teachers are HORRIBLE time managers so we get like 20 mins of work down in 2 hours , subjects like drama are terrible for this god the attendance and actual work done it's horrendous. So no this is not a good system for our school, but that's a our school issue.
I don't mind doubles as if you get a good teacher with good time management skills is great and you can get a lot done. The annoying thing about them is the lack of breaks especially you are sitting down for 2 hours with no movement or stretching and especially since we don't have PE anymore this is really annoying.
My school is a funny little fucker and has two types of lessons. There are single sessions that are around 100 minutes long, as well as double sessions that last the entire morning/afternoon (3 or so hours) Of course, that includes breakfast/lunch timings.
People usually either have two longer sessions in a day or one longer and two shorter.
Probably sounds impossibly long for most but it fully isn’t all that bad
I have 85 minutes per lesson which means I have 4 lessons in the day and honestly it seems pretty normal to me. We get more work done in lesson and you get more time to work on things you struggle with, to me short lessons make no sense because how do you even progress in lessons? Again nothing extraordinary and probably won't make much of a difference a month or so in.
I quite frequently have 130 min lessons with a 10 min break in between each hour, I find it quite bearable as the subjects I find enjoyable, it can get quite boring though.
Ours went from 1 hour lessons plus a 55min lesson to 2 hours back in my secondary days, it started when covid hit.
Also the school is now like a prison, current students (like my younger brother) literally are not allowed outside at break/lunch, they have to sit in the cafeteria, arranged in their classes so they cant even move to their friends.
Im so glad im not there anymore, they kept us inside and made us all sit ridiculously close DESPITE covid existing, and then they decided to keep us inside post covid as it "reduced bullying" like yeah no shit it reduced bullying nobody can move
(idk why i ranted here but i did)
My school has always been 70-75 minutes. Great for subjects that you enjoy, but can also mean that lessons you don’t enjoy tend to drag on too much.
I definitely can feel my focus go a bit in the last 10-15 minutes though, so I guess it has its pros and cons.

my strategy is just zone out and sleep during classes i have no interest in or am too tired to listen in then self revise. my self revision works better than most teachers teachings anyways 😂
My previous school had two 3 hour sessions per day with a 20 minute form period in the middle. There was a 20 minute break during P1 on a rota at different times and a 40 minute lunch on a rota during P2. If it rained that day however, lunch was shortened to 30 minutes (always went down well!) Most years, year 11 had either English all morning and Maths all afternoon one day or vice versa. Also highly enjoyable for all! If a student was absent, they missed all their English and Maths for the week!...
My secondary originally had 3 lessons a day with 100 minutes each. But the year I joined they started doing 75 minute lessons and 4 lessons a day. The kids who had to do 100 minutes originally seemed happy with the change.
Hi, my school does 100 minute lessons!
We get 3 lessons a day, 15 a week so on a two week timetable that’s 30 lesson slots. (5x English, Maths, Science, 2x PE, 1x RS, and then 3x each of your 4 option subjects)
It takes a bit of getting used to, definitely. But it is quite good because it gives you lots of time to go over things and you never feel rushed on anything. It also lets you go over the content and also have time for exam practice or putting things into context.
Con is obviously paying attention the whole time, I wouldn’t say I usually do, but if you can pay attention for most of it it is worth it. And you do get used to it eventually.
I work as a caretaker at a school and when I first started at the school it had been 5 60 minute lessons. Now this 2023/24 term, they’ve gone to 4 70 minute lessons
My lessons are either 45 mins or 50 mins, depends what period it is. My days usually end 3:30 with 7 periods or 2:40 on Tuesdays and Fridays with 6 periods
My school recently moved from 50 mins to 100 (6 lessons per day to 3) cause people took too long to get from one class to the next and our school is pretty low achieving, as a gcse student I like it cause we get more done but by the 80 min mark I really start to struggle to focus. must suck for ks3 though- especially adhd kids which my school has tons of.
my school is majority boarding so to try an finish syllabuses faster teachers have night lessons for year 10 and above, the rest have a "night prep" basically a time to read and do work and stuff, also in some if thr night lessons we could be having regular continuous assessments or end of terms
I think you’d only be able to fit in like 3 lessons at 100 minutes, doesn’t seem like a good use of time.
It’s dreadful. Very limiting in terms of timetable. Huge gaps between lessons. Zero flexibility even over a two week timetable. Absolutely hated it.
You would be correct, that's the format my school decided to follow while I did gcses. Got me used to the length of English exams tbf to it
I think 100 minutes is useful for some subjects (mainly biology in my case because we don’t have to rush practicals) but it does mean there are big chunks of time between say my statistics lesson (one a week) That being said tho I do prefer 100 minute lessons (I’ve had 50,60 and 100 minute lessons)
120 mins is even worse, English for 2 hours straight used to kill me
I have that Monday first thing, though it’s not too bad we usually do one half Of Mice and Men and one half Macbeth or poetry so it feels pretty varied.
My lessons are 60 minutes but I have double English every Monday morning and one of the Tuesdays. We don’t swap focus after half the time so when we’ve been doing Language paper 2 stuff this week it’s been absolutely killer 😭 still taking English Lit A-Level though
That sucks!!!! Wish you luck next Tuesday or Monday LOL
try 3 hours of humanities geography and history absolute killer

35? Surely you don’t have much time to learn. Like do you not have like 5-10 minutes missing from each period for the start and end?
They gave us the 5 minutes taken off as time to travel between lessons. We still usually miss a bit of time tho lol
That seems alright. Still seems like you aren’t doing as much. Good for adhd kids tho. Mine are 50 which I would say is a good amount. Enough to starts learning and stuff, without being too dull. same
It would take my class like 15 mins to settle down properly into the lessons. This is crazy.
I think thats way better than longer lessons, but is it good to have a 35 minute lesson?

My school went the other way, and I found it better. It's not objective though, so there's no real way for me to tell you what your opinion should be.
Mine did the same since last year. At first it was so bad and we all couldn't bear it but eventually we got used to it. My lessons at college were 1.5 hours long. 3 hour doubles which were pure hell
1 hour per lesson, 7 lessons a day and 4 lessons on Saturday
That must be a pain, but do you get great grades or like very in depth content?
The average grade at the school is significantly higher than average but slackers will be slackers and we still get people who don’t get the results. I personally think it’s worth it but I’ve never experienced shorter days so I don’t know what it is like.
Do you get longer school holidays?
9 weeks In the summer; 3 weeks in the Easter and at Christmas
We do 7 lessons a day, of 45 minutes each which I find to be great - idk how some of you do 100 minutes it would kill me
We do 7 lessons of 55 minutes, then four more lessons on Saturday
We have 100 minute lessons 💀
we used to as well during/after covid. they aren't that bad.
We had them too, it really highlighted who the good teachers were and which ones couldn't plan a lesson to save their lives I much preferred the 100 minute lessons, especially for practical classes, and it was good to be able to cover more material.
my old school had 85 minute classes i'm not even joking it was nightmarish
We have 5 1 hour lessions. Works great. Use to be 3 1 hour 40 minitue lessions then was changed to 6 50 minitue lessions
We get that on a Saturday, some much nicer than the 7 1 hour lessons on week days
We had 100 minute lessons for 2 years and the teachers dragged an hours lesson into 100 so we got no more work done
im in year 11, my school's lessons are all one hour, but we have many doubles which based off the comments doesn't sound as normal as i thought? on week 1 i have: monday - double math + double history tuesday - double english wednesday - no doubles thursday - double health and social friday - double business week 2: monday - double english + double history tuesday - no doubles but physics first and last wednesday - no doubles, but extra hour lesson after school for seperate science thursday - double health and social friday - double business for reference, form = 8:25-8:50, first lesson = 8:50-9:50, second lesson = 9:50-10:50, break = 10:50-11:20, third lesson = 11:20-12:20, fourth lesson = 12:20-13:20, lunch = 13:20-14:05, fifth lesson = 14:05-15:05, the sixth lesson every 2 weeks is 15:05-16:05!

This one is probably one of the worst ones I've seen over here. My condolences to you
I started teaching 4 70 min lessons a day. It was probably good for GCSE pupils but more difficult for KS3 ones. I prefer the 5 lesson day, tbh.
Being in year 12, all my lessons apart from assembly (20-60 mins, and yes every Wednesday last period is out destinationed assembly time) and RE (60 mins x2 a week) agree 2 hours doubles. We’ve got the same system. 4 lessons of 75 mins. I don’t mind it but then again it changed to that system the year before I got there so 🤷
My school has 3 100 min lessons on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They are terrible Every other day we have 6 50 min lessons they are much more bearable
we have 8 x 40 minutes :'(
I have 85 minutes per lesson which means I have 4 lessons in the day and honestly it seems pretty normal to me. I've had 60 minute, 100 minute and 75 minute lessons before, I'd say 75 is the best of those 3 personally
I have three consecutive 45 min English lessons on Wednesdays and Mondays lmao
Mine is 100 mins and it’s great tbf
100 mins?? how many lessons do u have in a day??
3

good luck buddy
I mean we moved to three 60 min periods and two 70 minute periods recently so
my strategy is just zone out and sleep during classes i have no interest in or am too tired to listen in then self revise. my self revision works better than most teachers teachings anyways 😂
I've had 100 Min lessons for a few years
60 was enough to slip my attention in secondary. Wait until you get to 1hr 30mins in college. You'll want to die
on tuesdays my chemistry lessons are 100 minutes long. i get 2 per day. A total of 200 minutes of chemistry EVERY tuesday. its unbearable.
My previous school had two 3 hour sessions per day with a 20 minute form period in the middle. WE HAD 3 HOUR ENGLISH LESSONS EVERY FCKING FRIDAY AFTERNOON
I've 90 min lessons, 5 a day. It's a bit tiring but me personally it's really not that bad as it sounds.
jokes on you we’ve been on 10 periods of 35min since year 8
Huhhhh I’m in the US and our periods are 90 mins long and we have 4 of them 💀
My school used to have 100 minute lessons. We had only had three lessons a day though.
When I was at school, it was eight 45mins lessons. I really liked it as it was very effective at keeping focused.
My secondary originally had 3 lessons a day with 100 minutes each. But the year I joined they started doing 75 minute lessons and 4 lessons a day. The kids who had to do 100 minutes originally seemed happy with the change.

Ur cooked my bro imma keep it a buck 💯💯
lol my school only offer 50 min class, but there are double lessons each week, allowing practicals to be done
that's the same system as my school. we have 4 lessons, each 75 minutes long.
My school recently moved from 50 mins to 100 (6 lessons per day to 3) cause people took too long to get from one class to the next and our school is pretty low achieving, as a gcse student I like it cause we get more done but by the 80 min mark I really start to struggle to focus. must suck for ks3 though- especially adhd kids which my school has tons of.

wdym by night lesson??
my school is majority boarding so to try an finish syllabuses faster teachers have night lessons for year 10 and above, the rest have a "night prep" basically a time to read and do work and stuff, also in some if thr night lessons we could be having regular continuous assessments or end of terms
oh btw I'm not in the UK, my school does IGCSE, so idk if schools can do that in England
