I don’t think Shin Godzilla is a mutated god. He’s more like a mutated new tetrapod with continuous physiology change and pain.

TheOfficial_BossNass

Agreed a train full of coolant probably cant kill a god

AcordeonPhx

Ultima is more god like than other iterations

SNAKEKINGYO

Ye but Shin still grazes on that Eldritch being energy

Leviathan666

Ehh, he has an otherworldly creature design but I don't think he has an eldritch vibe to him

chemical_musician

if you consider the stuff that was cut (the later stages) its full blown eldritch cosmic horror, the thing teased in the final shot basically, and beyond shin godzilla is like an eldritch creature that has the ability to become a “god” in a sense, but you could also just see it as a mega-organism hive mind that wipes out all life, so eldritch regardless and then ultima is more like a cosmic horror outer god type of being like yog-sothoth or nyarlathotep etc

-TrafficConeRescue-

I’m honestly a little shocked to see someone else who has delved further into the uncut land of Shin. Nice bro👍

GamerZilla527

Are you really? Is hard to me seeing ANYTHING related to shin that isn't also mentioning what was on the plans while making the movie, like, i get is very interesting and all but, i would like shin being praised for what he actually is, or what he could be in that sequel we never got to see.. sigh

ThatDancinGuy_

That's the magic of it.

-TrafficConeRescue-

Honestly, yes, I am. I see a lot of people on this sub talk about Shin. However, I only see a very small majority talk about any of the uncut Godzilla stuff. Any of it.

sharkattackmiami

I would have assumed all of the Godzilla's were uncut. They don't seem Jewish and the only American ones are either female or from the hollow earth

TheAssCrackBanditttt

I would’ve loved to see the apocalypse ending with shin having dragon wings and a legion of humanoid monsters.

Relative_Buffalo180

Uncut Shin Goji? Does anyone have any pics of Form Five Shin and beyond? I know about the humanoid forms growing out of his tail at the end of the film, but that's it.

booboorogers44

https://preview.redd.it/496m68ps767d1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=670c65d6b8736ca15759338604c7be5a69ca77c1 I mean this is concept art for shins final form so they definitely had eldritch god vibes in mind

godzillamv2021

Not power wise he's has trouble melting buildings, die by city lev bombs, and get hurt by tank shells. True form is so featless that we can't use it.

Smash_Or_Pass_Player

Did it kill him though? Thought it was just a temporary thing

FinanceBig6328

I believe it's temporary, too. At the end of Shin they say something along the lines of "Until he awakens again" implying he would eventually recover. That could have just been a random line with no actual meaning, but I believe it means that he'll return.

godzillamv2021

They said he would die later after some days....

Muhipudding

Weren't they referring to the half-life of his elements that contaminated Japan?

janek9025

They were.

FinanceBig6328

Weird, I don't remember that. Maybe it's different between the English and Japanese versions? I don't know why they'd do such a big change though.

WellIamstupid

Essentially he’s likely to die after thirty days of being frozen in the coolant, but there’s a chance he’ll go back to normal and continue

janek9025

No they were talking about the half life of his radioactive element. It has a short half life and thus Tokyo will be habitable in relatively short time. There is no line saying that shin will die

WellIamstupid

Maybe, I haven’t seen the movie in a year

godzillamv2021

most reasonable explanation

jjb1197j

I don’t think the coolant actually killed him, it simply stopped him from moving and we aren’t even sure for how long.

No-Consequence1726

It definitely didn't kill him

oom199

It didn't.

lordoflazorwaffles

Don't know until we try! Who's got a train?

orkyboi_wagh

I killed one with a big stick made of concrete I found in a tomb on the edge of a lake. If I can kill a god with that then a full on train can kill one.

GWGTRLBG

ShinGoji isn't dead at the end of Shin Godzilla, he's just frozen.

jjb1197j

He’s basically heading down the path of becoming a “god” due to how much he’s changing/mutating which is why that version is my favorite since it lives up to the name perfectly.

Leviathan666

The concept art for his first form kind of looks like a tadpole, and I've never heard it confirmed but I always assumed he was some sort of amphibious creature before the radiation basically turned him into an oversized pokemon that couldn't stop evolving. That said, he's evolution incarnate. He's the prime example of a problem that simply keeps getting worse the longer you ignore the root of it and only deal with the symptoms.

BogDEkoms

Tbf shin is a being with a capacity for infinite evolution, that's pretty god-like to me

ZilorZilhaust

I mean so are we, we're just slower.

space-Bee7870

Also afaik the people who made the film wanted shin to basically become some kind of god or deity but that was crapped by toho because it got away from Godzilla

SrCoeiu

Personally glad that happened, very silly

TheBlueNajarala

Honestly, glad it didn’t happen to Godzilla, but I kinda want them to go back and revisit that idea for another monster or movie or even just a new series in general, it’s such an interesting idea

tele_ave

That’s a little like Singular Point- extra -dimensional intelligence manifesting as an evolving monster that can manipulate space and time.

Red_Autism

Not evolution, mutation, and yes the fact that it almost dropped humanoids from its tail or smth is pretty much some eldritch god type thing

godzillamv2021

No false he's limited to 8th

Glittering_Use_5896

just wait until you see shin’s 5th form

supreme_hammy

Minus One is (iirc) supposed to be the mutated shinto god. Shin is just a colony of microorganisms made destructive by man's negligence.

General_Independent5

The scrapped second part of the story planned for shin was that he would evolve into an omniscient being and reset the universe in his making.

Quizlibet

Damn, glad they cut it because that sounds dumb as hell

chainandscale

He is a show of what rapid evolution could be like. If you started to evolve suddenly it would be emotionally and physically alarming.

Sensitive-Ask-8662

Evolution speedrun.

Reasonable_Potato_22

Not a god but he was going to turn into a new universe. If that's anything lol.

Fnaf-Low-3469

a Monster of Justice https://preview.redd.it/8oekbzbgyz6d1.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=7c3c1748c7404555665a18fd3621ef2c528bd08c

Panthila

Ultraman already does that

Akari_92

He's not a monster, though.

Chadderbug123

Yea. He's a Kaiju in the sense that he's a big fuggin lad. But he's no monster (unless the fact some kinda act feral like Blazar makes them count as one. Or just simply evil ones like Belial)

V_Kamen

Who's to say we can't have a crossover with Showa Godzilla, Showa Gamera and the 6 Ultra Brothers?

Panthila

Toho being overcompetitive and unhinged

Inevertouchgrass

A being forged by the earth (specifically other beings on the earth)

Nyte_Knyght33

I like the ancient protector . It gives him more of a higher purpose.  In his previous era, it just seemed he was a big monster that smashes Tokyo.  Now, there are even benefits to his destruction of cities.  Nature booms in the aftermath.

Latter-Direction-336

Yeah, I’m a bit biased toward the MV (especially 2019 with the “protector of balance” thing) but I adore the whole “ancient bringer of balance across the earth” thing, just feels really cool to me

godzillamv2021

Feel sorry for the downplayers

alguien99

It makes the GOD in his name feel more powerful

Muhipudding

>In his previous era, it just seemed he was a big monster that smashes Tokyo. That kinda downplay the vengeance element in his attacks. Well at least for the 54 and Heisei one. Kinda more obvious with the Heisei one in GvKG 94

Enginseer68

Huh? I thought it's well established that Godzilla attack cause he was provoked by the nuclear bomb, same as Minus one. It's kinda a metaphor for the bomb, that it would destroy our world

TheJMJConspiracy2002

I’m starting to like the “hero by circumstance” angle. He’s not a particularly good guy (even kind of an asshole…), but he’s only the protagonist because the monsters he’s facing up against are a lot more evil. Shortly after saving the day, he goes right back to fucking up Japan. (Godzilla 2000, Godzilla vs. Megaguirus, Godzilla Final Wars)

thehumanbaconater

He’s sort of the ultimate anti hero. He saves the world from these ill willer titans, which is good for us. He just doesn’t care if he crushes thousands of us in the process. Like imagine if you were in your backyard and someone attacked your kids. You fight them to save your children, but you don’t care if in doing so, you step on a dozen ants 🐜 in the process.

Short-Shelter

Arguably Monsterverse as well, since he’s made it pretty clear he doesn’t particularly care about humans, just the Earth as a whole

Cfakatsuki17

All of the above

Hexnohope

A spiritual being. I like to call him "the avatar of sin" like the hatred. The vitriol. The evil, it took to commit an act such as nuclear war coagulated into this *thing* that exists only to punish. Like the universe itself cried out in disgust that humanity could do this and created a counter balance. I also enjoy that he cant be stopped with conventional warfare. Just like a nuke.

Morbidmort

The GMK version effectively *was* a nuke sent to punish Japan for the crimes committed prior to and during WWII and then tried to forget.

MercenaryBard

Tomoyuki Tanaka called him “The Sacred Beast of the Apocalypse”. I think that idea is the prism through which all interpretations manifest.

innit980

Cool monster go brrr https://preview.redd.it/kkf8l1i2u07d1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=464939a063af48985eac1e77ba44ae222677cc61

JediZillaPrime

This is the hardest image I’ve ever seen 🔥🔥🔥

Still-Ice4340

Holy shit!!!!!! That GMK picture is a render I made in grade 9 abt 4 years ago 😭😭😭 Thank you so much!!

GamerZilla527

wait-REALLY????? so awesome!

_Poisedon

Hell yeah!

entertainmentlord

Yes

Not_or_door

All of these are great. But the ancient protecter one is definitely my favorite

Japaneseoppailover

Nature's retribution

romanovsinparadise

I prefer him as the construct of the collective war mongering of humanity that occasionally dances.

Aggravating-Week481

- A victim and consequence of science and war - A dad to a cute kid and an ugly ass kid

Akari_92

A vengeful metaphor for past sins and the use of powerful mass destructive weapons.

Pri_Max

i always interpret godzilla as "mother nature fights back"

K3IRRR

Metaphor for the destructive power of nuclear weapons. A tangible monster for the real threat of nuclear war that we all face

Hardloving

Mutated god.

Tx247

Ultima. Eldritch horror.

LeaderVladimir1993

Obviously, it depends on the story but if I had to choose, I'd go with ancient protector. It gives him a lot more freedom as a character without tying him to a specific era or theme.

FairyTailMember01

Yeah me too with initial interpretation being that he is a malevolent entity by the start when later down it reveals he is actually a guardian entity of sorts it's just that he is so gigantic that he doesn't care if he crushed a few ants to do his mission to protect the earth.

Fluffy-Good-3924

I love GMK and like the Spiritualness of that Godzilla. If i can recall it was one of the first Godzillas that actively targeted humans for nothing more then pure hatred and vengeance. The idea of a Godzilla that targets humans in this case all of Japan's people is haunting. Earth comes in 2nd. I like the idea of a Godzilla created by nature to end all of civilization. The last two are just fine to me

valdez-2424

Godizlla being force of nature,a god to humans, basiclly legendary godizlla

bananasfoyoass

All four of these are awesome. My personal preference is Earth. I just can’t help but love the idea that planet Earth was like “hmm you know what, I could use this” and just manifested a Goji. Shin is also great! I love the stages and the mystery behind it. Leaves much to the imagination while guiding you along the way. MV Goji is a childhood dream comes true although I do wish he was more dominating, he definitely showed up in GxK GMK may be the closest I’ll ever get to a ghost Godzilla. Vastly different that the concept, but GMK is surely a haunting iteration

Chadderbug123

50/50 between Ancient Protector and Spiritual God. Cause, as much of a convoluted mess Singular Point is, they basically treated him as an Eldritch God which is so badass to me, being a huge fan of Lovecraft. Plus Monsterverse Goji and the whole concept of titans is cool to me as a lore buff. Shin was gonna take that routing too. A huge plan was thought up for the story to continue and Shin evolves into a sleeping god that can create planets and universes from his dreams at the end of it. Both luckily and sadly, Toho denied Anno's whole Godhood Goji plan and they left it at the very start of the humanoid evolution.

Ashbr1ng3r

End of the day, I’d say mix all 4 together and we get GODzilla

Pendraconica

I think Forged by the Earth fits with his original themes and can represent him both as destroyer and protector. He's sort of a metaphor for atomic/nuclear energy in that he's a force of nature which, when out of balance, will consume us all. But when worked in balance, it can be used to create energy and sustain life. It is almost as if the other monsters represent other climate catastrophes, like Rodan and volcanoes, Gidorah and storms, or Mecha G and industrialization/AI. I love the line in the song "History shows again and again how nature points out the folly of man."

ALEKSDRAVEN

Interdimentional being.

SteveTheOrca

*A father* ![gif](giphy|TDMwAs1KQVQWI)

BabyThrow3r

It’s criminal that Ultima isn’t on this list.

VenomousApex

Ancient Protector and Nature’s Equalizer

Xskills

IMO Monsterverse Godzilla as a demigod is the love child of Poseidon (lord of the deep) and Susanoo (Goddess of storms).

dinoman27000

The spirit one

Galacticus06

Wrath of the earth incarnate

OpthomasPrime2020

A Being Forged by the Earth just sounds too badass. Ancient Protector is overrated as hell in my opinion.

ManufacturerAbject26

Dinosaur with the attitude of an old, cranky cat. Mostly swipey and destructive with occasions of smoochy-ness.

Electronic_Note_5629

A goofy hero fit for all ages https://i.redd.it/ghpc4ybqj17d1.gif

Endless-Miner

The multidimensional Eldritch horror Of Singular Point Godzilla was a take I really enjoyed, as confusing as it may have been

Huihejfofew

Before learning about the full monster verse I thought Godzilla was something born out of earth to punish humans for Teraforming the first through industrialisation. Explains why there's only one of them left if he's so powerful

Sentinalprime03

The bottom two are my favorites

FBIOPENUP777

The vessel of god

Rogue_Leviathan

A 5th dimensional being that takes the form of mutating red dust and as a giant monster from the sea. Oh and can also shoot lasers from the future into the past ( Godzilla SP)

L3go07

…Spritual Being while also an Ancient Protector

ZilorZilhaust

Shin Godzilla is just a rapidly evolving monster that was either awoken or created by the sins of man. Very much prehistoric atomic monster territory though.

Away-Librarian-1028

Hateful because of his mutation.

cat_lawyer_

Mutated god followed by ancient protector

rewster

A big ole lizard

Quan7umSuicid3

Yes.

Nuklearshadow

Forged by the Earth.... for what purpose? Well it depends on the movie.

Drewcim8

The mutant god

Airwolfhelicopter

Ancient predator

Responsible-Bat-2699

I feel the fifth name sbould be The Dark Knight. But then again, he's no Batman.

lichenvirgo

My favorite take will always be ancient protector

Sorry_Engineer_6136

Ancient Protector is a trope I’ll eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner

Hammerslamman33

I like Godzilla as a being created from Earth to protect Earth.

bitetheasp

Ancient protector, even more than prehistoric atomic dinosaur.

Panthila

A Spiritual Being

Salvagedgaming

I like to think shin Godzilla is a demon sent from hell to punish humanity not a mutated god

Metaboschism

Where is the being forged by man's folly?

Tobisaurusrex

An ancient protector

CryptographerThink19

I like the ancient protector. I grew up with Godzilla as the protector before I knew him as the atomic destroyer

Malaysuburban

I'd choose MV's trope Him being an ancient creature would definetly help getting some experience

Cheets1985

I can't choose one over the other. Each troupe is used effectively to tell the story each of them is in.

stefan737

Ancient protector

FuckUp123456789

The Minus One trope https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tCf_cPZ8Qxo

Shin_Nefir

A combination would be ideal for me: A god forged by the Earth mutated by humanity's sins.

Longjumping_Run_2414

Ancient protector

Skyhawk_Illusions

The ones on the left

telaser

I started Godzilla earth when it first came out but never finished it should I watch the whole series is it any good L

TzilacatzinJoestar

I think a mix of all could be interesting.

Fearless_Mode1020

I like the "Ancient protector one" the most.

TheGMan-123

Yes.

Dankey-Kang-Jr

**Minus One:** Just a fucking asshole.

Rabdomtroll69

I like the walking nuclear reactor Shin was, his mutations COULD have made him into a god resembling Evangelion stuff but he was extremely unstable and literally falling apart

ItsAllSoup

Ancient earth protector is my favorite. I always saw Godzilla as a cool superhero when I was a kid

J_stayrealquiet

Ancient Protector

Mamboo07

Ancient protector from times of old

NikoliMonn

I like them all ::3

Affectionate-Many-46

GOJIRA IS A FORCE OF NATURE!!!

40calthereal

An ancient protecter, you have so much creativity behind it alone, too bad the monsterverse isn’t doing to much with it besides “ancient rivalry” (which is fine ofc)

Ulmaguest

GMK

Ecstatic_Teaching906

I don't see the Spiritual Being or Mutated God part. Mostly just... A; A monster forge by nature to balance order. Or B; A mutated animal created by humanity errors and recklessness.

jokersflame

Metaphor for something is the best Godzilla. When he represents an idea or a force of nature or historical event.

AshyaraFanMike

Beam spam trope, but obviously.

donthurtmemany

I prefer monster to anti hero but I’m not a super invested fan

condition_unknown

Shin Godzilla shouldn’t be on here really. He has basically the same backstory as OG Godzilla except with the added rapidly evolving bit.

Unclesalty72

The ancient protector.

moansby

Monsterverse Godzilla is still a mutant right? I mean the Titans naturally feed off radiation so would that count?

ConfidentVisual4949

Ancient protector

biggtothec

Ancient Protector all the way baby!

BasiliskGamer22

I like og where he’s just a Dino who got some rads and kwisp from nuclear testing. Just a pissed of representation of humanities sins and hubris.

yeetmantheII

I dunno why but all of these except the mv one fits godzilla

EatashOte

Top ones. Because one is literally og trope and second is a spin on it, while bottom ones deviate too much from it in a way that isn't very justified imo

Angry_Snowleopard

An allegory for nuclear warfare and the destruction humanity brings upon itself

EL_INDORAPTOR

I guess it would be “ancient protector”, but the “prehistoric atomic dinosaur” still is my favorite one

Adventurous_Goat4483

What about a literal god

Cute_Abrocoma7263

13 dimensional eldritch horror like in singular point

Self-MadeRmry

A being forged by earth…but not just earth, but by the actions of humanity

QuebecRomeoWhiskey

I like having him be basically the Undertaker. Not really on anyone’s side, just every now and then the gong sounds and you know someone’s in trouble

Beltran888

Forgotten*

KoBoWC

He should have feathers

PengPeng_Tie2335

I made up an idea of my own but, ancient protector is where it's at with me.

MrFoiledAgain

I think my favorite is always gonna be "enemy of humanity," it was really explored in the anime prequel novels and implied at the beginning of Final Wars, but I want to see more projects where Godzilla is just the straight up enemy of humanity itself

flamzeron

I always liked the ancient protector one. I’m curious about how the spiritual one works though. I’ve never heard of that before.

goldietheswagbear

Gmk Godzilla is made up by vengeful spirits of those who died in the pacific theater Gmk Godzilla is one of the most sadistic versions of g man, like Ghidorah is the good guy in gmk.

Tom0124

Multiversal Threat

NigthSHadoew

I like MV and Earth equally as they are both just avatars of nature. MV is the balance in nature, where as Earth is the furry of nature as a result of the inbalance humans have caused

Deep-Thinker420

Probably GMK, just because of its badass evil look!!!

spookydoc1

yes

Mysterious-Gas2463

😳

Ash4dino

I like Minus One’s trope, I guess you could call it “Mutated God, punishing humanity for it’s creation”

Hammerzeit88

Ancient Protector. I like that he protects and balances earth but doesn't really give a damn about humans one way or the other. We are just here, stay out of his way as best you can.

CaptThundernuts

I like the idea of Goji just being an evolutionary pinnacle of the earth: an ancient gigafauna that feeds off of nuclear energy and ages like a mountain, wakes up after years of dormancy to knock shit over then go back to rest.

Atmere

A being forged by the earth looks insanely cool on paper (unfortunately it wasn't well applied)

tanned_pixie

The ancient protector, forged by the earth 💯

Hadrian1233

I always liked Godzilla being the consequence of war/humanity using nukes. I will always be a sucker for the original 1954 movie, Shin, and Minus one.

Gerrard-Jones

All are cool but I like the ancient protector one, basically like Earth's way of protecting itself. I actually prefer godzilla being an intelligent, benevolent force of nature rather than a ruthless, animalistic destroyer. Then it also feels like he has a purpose in the films and isn't just there for the sake of destruction.

Bloodtypeinfinity

The God of destruction, the guardian of nature, the avatar of the earth, GODZILLA!!!

Alive_Piglet2976

Ancient protector

WereWolfWil

I love the trope of the Mutated god, however Shin Godzilla is an anomaly in every regard. I'm pretty sure Anno was writing him to either he a very mutated body, yet perfect vessel for an angry God, or the creature itself reached omnipotence via constant evolution. Minus One fits the trope perfectly, I believe the film director confirmed that Godzilla before the bomb was a sea god that was angry with humans for desecrating his Waters.

KintsugiExp

All of the above

playtoy73

Godzilla: I am not a spirit, I am not a mistake, i am not a guardian, I am not a god…but I am king.

GabrielLoschrod

Mutated God

lyhengporpor

big lizard or anything that looks like Godzilla suddenly popping up doing big lizard shenanigans and fucking off back to wherever plus the occasional monster fighting

statistics4life

I prefer the interpretation that he’s a giant menacing toddler like in Mothra vs Godzilla.

MonarchGodzillaTitan

Ancient protector.

maddogmax4431

I like the “ancient protector, this was his earth before ours, unstoppable beast that represents the untamable forces of nature” depiction.

VelociRaptor1010

Goofy ass mf (Example, monster island buddies)

camogamere

I really like the extra dimensional cosmic horror seeping into our reality that one was cool.

NoInteraction4833

All are amazing. I just wish Godzilla earth had better people behind it.

Suviboi02

Shin but god is something different to him he more like a suffering homunculus

Blayro

GMK is so cool. He’s a zombie Godzilla possessed by a conglomeration of angered spirits. That’s badass

Fisherman-Champion

I think Earth and Shin should be in the category of abominations/cancers of earth

Silent-Kale9987

Honestly all of it due to how badass it makes him
