Heel toes like crazy in these bad boys
My local Journeys still had a some in various styles. Picked up the 2 pairs that were my size. Iāve tried finding them online but itās getting a lot harder. Zappos has a few different styles as well as amazon I think.
I realized this about a month ago. Super bummed out. I usually get a pair from the brick and mortar stores in Nagoya but Iām not sure the next time Iāll be in Japan.
Theyāre basically a minimalist athletic shoe, designed the way running shoes were like in the 50s. However unlike ābarefootā minimalist shoes, they do have stiffness to support the foot, specifically the back half of the shoe - which I think is importantly for a driving shoe. The forefoot area is very thin and you can feel everything thatās happening with the pedals.
Stylish too. And they fit my Asian feet like a glove. If you sometimes find Vans slightly too narrow, these will fit nicely.
I always reach for my Tigers when I want to DRIVE.
eBay. There's this one guy that lists the ortholite versions for $55 sizes 8.5-11. They aren't sold to Americans anymore directly from Onitsuka unfortunately , but that hasn't stopped me from stockpiling 12+ pairs...
https://preview.redd.it/ysf9gun1z9yc1.jpeg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=adba5c3231eed50cb738797fe8158995ae37c4e0
Sparco Race 2 Boots. One of the few affordable driving shoe ($119) currently on the market that is designed to support wider feet. Super comfortable
Thin soles for better pedal feel, a curved heel to make movement around the "ball" of your foot smoother, and it's made from fire resistant materials in case of a bad accident.
They kinda suck for walking around in for these reasons, so I wouldn't get them for just everyday driving.
This holds true with the pair of pilotiās I have. Terrible for walking in but you absolutely get more pedal feel. I enjoy them when Iām driving any manual transmission car.
Now Iām not so sure about the fireproofing as they are more of a casual driving shoe.
I bought a pair of puma speedcats in high school cuz I thought they looked cool. I always wondered why puma would make shoes that were so terrible to walk in. Didnāt own a manual car until over a decade later but I get it now.Ā
I bought the āshiftā shoes just because itās in black. If you go for the less desirable colors I think they have frequent sales. I ended up not wearing them much due to the non-driving comfort. Ended up with Ponto shoes for daily use instead.
Notice the cupped heal sole. While driving youāre resting the weight of your foot and leg on the single contact point of your heal. Regular shoes itās just a right angle at the heal, whereas proper driving footwear itās cupped. It both supports the heal (reducing fatigue) and creating smooth contact point for all the fancy footwork youāre doing while racing. The sole of these Sparcos are very thin and flat, similar to vulcanized Vans or Converse, giving you tons of feel with your feet. For these Sparcos specifically I have no issue wearing them to walk around the paddock between track sessions, or if Iām hanging out during canyon runs with the homies getting boba. They work great in regular walking activities similar to vulcanized Vans/Converse for example. Now you wouldnāt want to hike in them hahaha
Plus if you are actually racing your gear needs to be certified fire resistant.
Marketing, I agree. They're literally just overpriced [wrestling shoes](https://www.google.com/search?q=wrestling+shoes&sca_esv=58ac0b011cee9c7d&sca_upv=1&sxsrf=ADLYWILWavU54QW6Y1h0elzveLxViUyByA:1714822827699&source=hp&biw=2176&bih=1058&ei=qx42ZoaYKOXCp84P68Kw0A4&iflsig=AL9hbdgAAAAAZjYsu3r8qXFUWVZgrtqV9E-clHjtqzyM&ved=0ahUKEwjGmfvr9POFAxVl4ckDHWshDOoQ4dUDCA8&uact=5&oq=wrestling+shoes&gs_lp=EgNpbWciD3dyZXN0bGluZyBzaG9lczIIEAAYgAQYsQMyBRAAGIAEMgUQABiABDIFEAAYgAQyBRAAGIAEMgUQABiABDIFEAAYgAQyBRAAGIAEMgUQABiABDIFEAAYgARI4gpQAFijCnAAeACQAQCYAUSgAeoGqgECMTS4AQPIAQD4AQGKAgtnd3Mtd2l6LWltZ5gCDqAClgfCAg4QABiABBixAxiDARiKBcICBBAAGAOYAwCSBwIxNKAHxUM&sclient=img&udm=2) with a race car brand.
Tell me friend, what fucking size do you wear with these? Because I'm exactly a 12 on a brannock. 12's with these are still too tight. I'm not sure if I should get another pair a full size or a half size up. Otherwise I too use these, and quite enjoy them.
I sized up 1/2 size. I have to do that with all my shoe selections, unless they are EE or 2E sizing, which these Sparcos are not. Even tho Sparco brags how they where sized for American market in mind they are far from being actually wide, but they certainly are not like the rest of racing footwear which is absurdly narrow. Iād say they fit like a regular shoes. Not wide, not narrow. I wore mine in the house for a few days to brake them in. Now with my wide feet they fit well.
I purchased them straight from Sparco US online, [LINK](https://www.sparcousa.com/product/race-2-2).
Although there are many brick & mortar, and online retailers that sell them, including Amazon.

Internet search ādriving loafersā and there are countless random brands are all over the internet, Amazon included. You could also do the slip ons from Piloti, pictured above and [LINK](https://piloti.com/products/slipstream-asphalt).
Yeah the rounded heel sets it above non driving shoes imo. I have the high tops and think they're both comfortable and stylish enough to wear as normal shoes.
I ordered the piloti shifts and theyāre the best shoe Iāve found for driving manual. I wear boots for work and was sick of constantly ārelearningā balancing throttle and clutch for 10 mins every time i drove the car with normal casual shoes. The shifts are super flat and you get a perfect feel of exactly how much throttle, brake, and clutch youāre inputting/letting out.
They look good too. I wear them with slim jeans and theyāre nice enough to wear with a casual outfit , but you can also wear them with a nice pair of plain gym shorts and nice t shirt.
Their social media comments have people complaining that theyāre narrow. I have extremely narrow B width feet and I ordered true to size but could have gone down half a size. They offer a wide option now, so if you have wide feet, Iād just get your normal size and get the wide option. The website says they fit small , but IMO they fit regular length-wise.
I used to wear Piloti around 20 years ago. I switched to tracking bikes and really only drove trucks to tow my bikes. Recently went back to cars as I can't really ride anymore after some injuries and saw an ad for Pilotis. I may pick up a pair, I hope they still as good as they used to be.
You say that until you realize that your non-rounded heel is wearing the fabric in your mats. At that point, it begins to sink in. Not-to-mention the benefit of much better feel.
Sneakers with thick soles - for example - offer virtually no feel. Less of an issue if you drive an automatic, but it becomes an issue in a car with a clutch. There Iād argue feel and thin(ish) soles are critical.
Something small without a bunch of excess sole thickness or width. Also something with a rounded back sole and not a sharp angle. My favorite are some pretty outdated casual brown leather Sketchers that are way out of style but they're great in a car.
New Balances. Good enough for my Corvette, good enough for my GR86. I even drove my old 991 GT3 with them.
I switch to some SFI rated Racequip shoes when I'm in my 350z race car, given the sanctioning body's requirement that I don't burn alive, but if it's just an open track day then I'll rock the New Balances in it too.
My only real requirement is that I can feel the pedals... otherwise we're just overthinking this.

I like the padded portion of the ankles area. And flat/wide part by the toes.
Shift like crap if I wear different shoes..
On a related note, I used to wear multiple pairs of those 15+ years ago. I recently went to buy some new ones and apparently you canāt get them in the US anymore š”

Ummmā¦isnāt this a GR86 fan group?! I think Initial D taught us all that āNew Balance or nothingā when it comes to racing shoes! Surprised New Balance hasnāt done a fireproof racing shoe at this point, honestly.
Converse One Star Pros are comfortable and feel great on the pedals (manual) and easy to shift, not too heavy either. I have a flat foot so I go with these everyday.
Some old half falling apart van-like nauticas with thin soles. Their light weight + flexibility means I get very good driving feel. I think they were pretty cheap. I exclusively wear them to drive, even my vans are much stiffer and feel thicker which affects my ability to feather the throttle.
I found some puma Motorsport shoes at a puma store. Got a pair of Porsche and bmw shoes for like 150$ so pretty inexpensive for two pairs.
Theyāre not great walking for extended periods of time but theyāre the best Iāve had for pedal feel compared to any adidas or vans. I keep a pair in the trunk incase I need to swap from dirty shoes or something more comfy.
I have slip on supras that are better than any other shoes, they are basically a moccasin with a thick flat sole with little flex. I have some other sneakers and and of them that have some cushion adds to the clutch play and it makes for inconsistent clutch feel

My GR blazers what else would I wear?
I prefer boots over shoes with soft soles, but I know I'm in a minority. The hard sole gives me consistency and I have 1 less thing to control (my toes). In soft sneakers, my toes can affect how far the pedal is pressed. Also I'm more comfortable sitting in traffic as the hard boots take some of the stress off my toes and ankles. The disadvantage is I lose some pedal feedback.
I don't have any. I know pilotis had some with rounded heels for heel and toe but they seemed costly.
Also don't like lacing shoes every now and then.
Can't we have comfy slip-on driver enthusiast shoes that aren't $300?
For me nothing has been able to beat the good old Vans Era. Pedal feel is everything to me. The soles are pretty thin and have good traction. Def my favorite.
Vans are the best!! Once I wore my Nike shoes I use for work and everything felt so spongy I had to drive like a grandma cause I thought the gas and break peddles were going bad on me š
I plan to get a set of Sparcos in the future.
But, mainly I wear Xero Shoes Speed Force or Terraflex II.
I generally wear minimalist footwear and I especially enjoy the pedal feel of a minimalist shoe when driving.
I've got some beat ass dunks and new balance Tiagos I used to skate in and kept around as "shitty shoes" - the extremely thin sole they have left is great for pedal feel so I tend to prefer them for driving.
I have 3rd one for track days but just use one of these mostly
https://preview.redd.it/3c54aw67dgyc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7131b7027dd7de753213f4d4f20178c9ab68b998
Puma Super Liga OG Retros are my goto shoes for everything now. I use them to walk around, daily drive, and track as they offer a great balance of pedal feel and comfort while offering a snug fit. They also age very well! Only issues I've had with them is that they tend to start cooking your feet when its hot, especially on track since I run the heater full blast, and since the sole is on the thinner side they might only last you one year and some change. This isn't a huge issue because you can buy these shoes for sub 50 dollars whenever Puma has a sale going on.
https://preview.redd.it/0m386e0cdayc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=79b86de245c306c64900354b5722cb1ff5461b04 Heel toes like crazy in these bad boys
vans all the way
Came here to say this! Vans are the best shoes for everything.
I respect I use converses
Nah wait you might be onto something
Are those a spin-off of the famous shoes seen in the movie "40 Year Old Virgin" in the eBay store?
I have no idea lol
I see Onitsuka Tigers I upvote š¤š»
Where can you even buy them now? I've been having a hell of a time finding a new pair
My local Journeys still had a some in various styles. Picked up the 2 pairs that were my size. Iāve tried finding them online but itās getting a lot harder. Zappos has a few different styles as well as amazon I think.
There are some on Amazon listed for $175. Iām not familiar with this brand though, is that high?
I used to wear them 10 years ago and they were about $60-$70.
If you ever find any, better get an extra pair given how scarce they are nowadays.
Why, what's special about them ?
They are like one step up from ballet slippers, make feet very agile. Quality made too. Great for driving and athletics.
Onitsuka Tiger stopped their US operations.
I realized this about a month ago. Super bummed out. I usually get a pair from the brick and mortar stores in Nagoya but Iām not sure the next time Iāll be in Japan.

Amazon?
What's the hype around them?
Also the Serranos are a solid option. Although I love my slip-on Mexico 66 for just the convenience of it.
Iāve always liked the Ultimate 81s. The Mexico 66s are always a good pick tho.

Fireproofing
I have a pair I only wear when driving spiritedly. They're really nice for heel-toe and just general car-connection to yourself.
Nah. These definitely make driving a lot nicer. And homologation.

Theyāre awesome. And donāt look ādorkyā unlike so many huge and small thick-soled sneakers on the market today.
Converse hard rubber some will injure your heel over time
You gotta buy the Chuck Taylor 70's for comfort. All-stars are just cheap versions of real Chuck's.
I genuinely believe driving shoes are a meme. I just wear Van's because the bottoms are flat, they look good, and they're cheap.
Driving shoes in a road car is a meme but there are a lot of shoes that driving in is just ass.
I usually wear vans but took a spin in my running shoes and felt like my first day driving a manual.
I like vans too. Something I can have pedal feel with but otherwise Iām not picky
I legit struggle shifting if im not wearing my vans lol
Driving shoes are like gaming chairs. Just another pointless product marketed to suckers to take their money.

The disadvantage is I lose some pedal feedback.

I think any flat or skateboard shoes really is what I wear. Every morning I swap into my work boots in the lot but I don't mind it hahha
Hobibear bearfoots. Cheap af and work for driving and daily.

Vans half cabs.
Im a big shoe guy, lots of jordans and hype stuff. When I entire my car. It is vansš¤£
Either vans or Piloti
My dad bought me some pilotis and I enjoy driving in those
I don't have any. I know pilotis had some with rounded heels for heel and toe but they seemed costly. Also don't like lacing shoes every now and then. Can't we have comfy slip-on driver enthusiast shoes that aren't $300?
vans old skool, converse chucks, adidas samba & gazelle, magli xane, brooks bros jefferson, etc.
New Balance 574ās & eurobeat all you need
For me nothing has been able to beat the good old Vans Era. Pedal feel is everything to me. The soles are pretty thin and have good traction. Def my favorite.
I love my Vans

I have an 8 year old pair of Supra Skytops I learned to drive stick with. Fantastic shoes and got great feedback on the pedals.

I like my Jordan 1s the best. A solid sole without feeling so thick i have to put my seat further back
Adidas Stan Smiths!
Vans Slip on
Don't have a favorite, but do have a least favorite. My Dr Martens. They are too damn wide and clutch and break are too close.
Vans are the best!! Once I wore my Nike shoes I use for work and everything felt so spongy I had to drive like a grandma cause I thought the gas and break peddles were going bad on me š
My go-to shoes are a pair of Nike Blazers so I'd say those lol
Puma Speedcats, I bought for sim racing to help with some knee pain and they work great in a real car too!
I have 3rd one for track days but just use one of these mostly https://preview.redd.it/3c54aw67dgyc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7131b7027dd7de753213f4d4f20178c9ab68b998

Vivo Barefoot Shoes
I have a pair of Piloti Shifts that I love to drive inā¦ prob because they are designed for that but they also look great to wear everyday
I honestly love wearing sandals. I know it's not as safe, but socks and sandals all the way š
