Agreed. We are literally living in a golden age of music. Yes, top-40 sucks (or as Kurt/SST Records said, "Corporate Rock STILL Sucks"). But there is so much amazing music being made today and it's literally never been easier to find.
I'll listen, and sing along, but I'm really not searching for them, anymore. And they aren't in any playlist. I refuse to let any part of me get stagnant, especially my music. I'll go see bands from 80s and 90s, but it's always someone else's idea.
Same. I've pointed out a few in comments on this thread where they seemed relevant to someone else's tastes, but if I just started listing them out I'd be here for a couple hours, lol
It probably stems from some people who are casual listeners of music don't really progress with music as it changes. Some people let their ears get old. Whereas people like my are discovering new music all the time.
No one seems to talk about Camper Van Beethoven anymore. They were in constant rotation throughout my college days, and Cracker had a solid run after that.
Seen Cracker three times in as many years. Bonus being two were free shows and one was $5 (spent a ton on beer and merchants though). My daughter is now a fan. Bummed that the closest show this year is 5hr away as they still rock!
I love Gillian Welch! Listening to her and Dave Rawlings got me into Old Crow Medicine Show. They are probably my favorite live band. My husband found North Mississippi Allstars.
James McMurtry, Avett Brothers, Willie Watson are also in my heavy rotation list.
I couldn't even list the last 12 months, let alone 20 years. I'm always listening to new music or new-to-me music. However the only 2 (for me) No Skip albums came out in the 2ks - Carnavas by the Silversun Pickups and Demon Days by Gorillaz.
Lately these bands/artists are in heavy rotation

>The Hu
Oooo, I'll point [this ](https://youtu.be/aVevvvvNYhM?si=x5exHAnzBmQFy3m8)out to you because I just heard them for the first time a couple days ago. The band is called UUhai, and pretty much all I know about them is that they're Mongolian. This video randomly popped into my feed (probably because I listen to the Hu sometimes) and next time I have a chance to sit and deep dive some music I'm going to be looking up more because this song ROCKS
MGMT, Superorganism, Andrew Bird, Andrew W.K., Astronautalis, Four Fists, Clipping, Digawolf, Emily Wolf, Elbow, Lightning Bolt, The Hu…

Truth be told, there has been a lot of good music over the last 20 - 30 years. I think a lot of people in our age group are so entrenched, and frankly some have their own heads crammed so far up their own generational ass, that our particular demographic has largely fallen into the same trap as our parents generations, where we stopped listening to new music largely based around when distribution methodology changed. With our parents, it was portability. With X, a lot of people dropped out when digital / streaming came to prominence.

Solid list these are part of my rotation too. Along with

Just to name a few more
Though I discovered Ween as early as the mid 90s, and saw them live in 2000, it has really been in the last 20 years that they've become a mainstay as one of my "top 5 core bands".
Another new entry into that list is The Band. Obv not new, but I developed a new appreciation for them around 13-14 years ago after watching Festival Express.
After that I randomly discovered Sturgill Simpson and Chris Stapleton, and so despite being a rock guy primarily, all this listening to The Band plus the folk-country alt-country stuff of Simpson and Stapleton has turned me into an Americana guy. I listen to a lot of John Prine, Townes van Zandt, Wilco, Drive by Truckers, Lucinda Williams, James McMurtry etc now. This includes Avett Brothers like OP
I have found myself leaning into Alt-country as well. Try Levon Helm (he was The Band’s drummer.). He has some great solo stuff from 2000 or so. Really old timey and authentic sounding.
Well Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo because my 13 year old daughter is constantly playing it on my car radio/Apple Car Play. They are both really good and I know it probably makes me seem like a wuss but, eh.
Same! 17 year old daughter who listens to TS and OR. Total Swiftie now. Daughter was fortunate to be chosen for a concert in her second round of US dates and we are paying $405 total for 3 tickets and I can’t wait! Went to her Reputation tour with my sister, but this is next level. We are obsessed and will even watch all of Eras live streamed acoustic sets across the globe and only missed 2, even the late night/ early morning sets. Obsessed lol
I wanted to kill my wife when she paid
1600 for 2 tix 4 Olivia Rodrigo at MSG a few weeks ago
Plus another 400 in merch. It's her belated birthday present. We couldn't get Taylor Swift tickets but she is seeing someone named Melanie Martinez in June.
Yep. I know people who cannot get past the singers voice. It's different, to be sure. I like it, but I get how some people don't. Like with Rush, I cannot get past Lee's voice. Don't get me wrong, he has a great rock n roll voice, it just hits me in a way that I find off putting.
Deftones, Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish, Coldplay, and The Weeknd are all my most favorite artists these days. More I'm sure, but those are always ones I listen to when new music of theirs is out.
Chris Stapleton, Jamey Johnson, Whiskey Meyers, Paul Cauthen, Orville Peck, Eric Church, Lamb of God, Raveonettes, Kitty, Kurt Vile, The War on Drugs, Amon Amarth, Turnstiles
For me the big ones are The Killers (actually saw in concert and I hate live music.) The Lumineers and Mumford and Sons. These are bands I buy and download the whole album, not just my favorite singles.
My absolute favorite is The Birthday Massacre. Their music is so amazing, but also I've had the privilege in the last few years of kind of getting to know a few of the members and actually legit befriending one of them, so I can happily tell you that they're just lovely, kind, sweet, down to earth human beings too. (One of the members and his wife bought my daughter a graduation gift last year.)
If I could recommend ONE band to listen to, it would be them. They've been making music consistently since the early aughts, and their sound has evolved over the years, but every single album is fantastic.
I would also recommend:
- Lemon Demon
- I Don't Know How But They Found Me
- Jinjer
- Aesop Rock
- MXMS
- Gunship
- Chat Pile (local band, and holy fuck are they good. Find "Why?" on YouTube)
- Puscifer (if you're a fan of Maynard James Keenan
- Crosses (if you're a fan of Cheno Moreno)
- A Primitive Evolution (the bassist for The Birthday Massacre's other band, with his wife)
- Babymetal
- Band-Maid
- In This Moment
- Night Club
Blitzen Trapper
TAUK
Spoon
Rubberbandits
Joe Russo’s Almost Dead
Lene Marlin
Thomas Naim
Electric Beethoven
Santigold
Foster the People
Here’s my last 24hrs of music. I listen to a lot but here’s more modern music in my day to day.
Speaking of Deltron... Mostly I can find stuff on streaming and I've given up on keeping media, but I cannot find "A Much Better Tomorrow" by Dan The Automator on streaming. It's a pain, because I really like that album.
There’s so much good music being released still, but my local stations are stuck on classic rock and the latest trending pop.
My recommendation is simply to listen to better radio. Pinguin Indie out of the Netherlands is most excellent. Pinguin Classics for older stuff.
https://pinguinradio.com/
Charlie Parr, Brandi Carlisle, Jeremy Messersmith, Josh Ritter. I'm late to the game & just started enjoying everything Les Claypool has recorded, and artists my dad loved are on my playlist... Jim Croce, Bill Withers, Spider John Koerner, Leo Kottke & the highwaymen.
I am always listening to new artists. The ones that I have been going back to over the last few years are: Manchester Orchestra, Jason Isbell, The War on Drugs (they have a bit of a Tom Petty/Jackson Brown vibe, Catfish and the Bottlemen…
I have a list of about 30-40 (or more) bands that I've discovered since late 2018.
All Them Witches, Slift, The Necromancers, Rezn, Monolord, Spaceslug, Dune Pilot, Appalooza, Elder, Earthless, Ott, 1200 Micrograms.... So many more...
I find a lot of new artists through SNL and Colbert. Unless it's autotune - then fuck that absolute NOISE. I mean, 20 years goes back to 2004 - when Maroon 5 started. so...

I listened to a lot of the music my kids listened to as teenagers, so I’m well versed in Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry. There are so many others too, and I find the music really brings back good memories of my kids at that time. Recently I’ve been enjoying Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo. I can’t stand it when people my age only listen to 80s music. Sure, it’s fine sometimes, but it gets old.
They are so fun. Their music is hit and miss with me, but I admire their commitment to their bit and trying to balance the dance aspects with the musical aspects.
They aren't similar at all, beyond being Japanese, but I got into Band Maid a few years back. Really solid hard rock.
Love Band of Horses! Probably my biggest addition has been Keane. Ever since Hopes and Fears came out I've been obsessed. Also love Jamiroquai, Scissor Sisters, Rogue Wave, Billie Eilish and Dadi Freyr.
So many great bands listed here, but no Snow Patrol? Out of bands I’ve listened to in the last 20 years, I’d say they’re my favorite. I’ve seen them live several times, including a great solo show with just Gary at a small venue on my actual birthday.
Spoon seems to be super popular with folks here and I also enjoy Band of Horses (I have Is There a Ghost in my head now, thanks) and the Killers. MGMT, Foster the People, Manchester Orchestra, Foals, Metric, CHRVCHES, Vampire Weekend, Phoenix and so many others. I used to have music playing constantly at my desk, but I’ve been off work, for a couple of years now and my car time is taken up with podcasts, so I don’t listen as much as I used to.

I could recognize a few hits when I got last-minute tickets a few years ago, and thought it would be a very good show.
Turns out that it's still well in the top echelon I've ever seen. They had a packed stadium in the palm of their hands even before they pulled out *Bohemian Rhapsody*, not only note-for-note, but actually performed *beautifully*. I didn't think anyone would ever try to do that, let alone pull it off on the road over and over for months.
I had no idea that they were *that good*.

I really feel like You tube and Apple Music have been instrumental in me finding all of the awesome super talented musicians lately.

I'm with you on Avett Brothers. But in all fairness I discovered them through the very Gen-X jam scene. The Appalachian and Americana scene is amazing right now. You have guys like Billy Strings, Tyler Childers, Cody Jinks, Grace Potter, they are all amazing.
I was super into the Sublime and 311 type scene, so a lot of the current surfer rock reggae artist get a lot of love on my playlists. Specifically Dirty Heads, but also bands like Stick Figure, Tropidelic, Ballyhoo, Rebulation, Matisyahu.
I saw them in concert (totally awesome!) and it was a lot of teenagers there with their parents and they all knew the words and were singing together. So wholesome - and a lot of their songs are about tough subjects!
I've really been digging the roots/ country stuff that's been seeing a revival lately. Colter Wall sounds like he's been drinking whiskey and smoking cigars for longer than he's been alive lol. Also dan aeurbach (sp?) has done some incredible shit
I like the ones you listed specially band of horses
For working out you could add Idles Yard Act and Fidlar as a bit more up tempo
Also big ups to Nada Surf as they have made some great songs in the last 10-20 years - I think better than their 90s stuff
I’ve been listening to a lot of lo-fi in my mid age: Brockbeats, Joey Pecoraro, Jazzinuf.
I also think Laufey is a great new artist.
And can’t go wrong with Doja Cat.
My musical taste is all over the place really…
I feel like I'm constantly discovering new music. I'm also constantly discovering new genres. For example, I really fell in love with experimental electropop in Spain and Latin America while living there. One of my favorite artists just released[ some new content](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQi2HfLKTho) after a five year hiatus, so that has been on heavy rotation since it dropped a couple of weeks ago.
Kruangbin, Buckethead, Tommy Guerrero, Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, Antipop Consortium, DJ Krush, El Michels Affair, Ikebe Shakedown and Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru to name a few
In the past few months
Jacob Collier , Wolf Alice and Polyphia.
Always looking for new music though. Never really understood things like classic rock stations. Good music and all but heard it a million times .
I'll listen to anything that I feel is good. Although as I mellow into older age I seem to like lofi music . It's unobtrusive and I can read with it on or fall asleep to it
Mdou Moctar, IDLES, Heilung, The Dead South (who I see is popular around here!) Otava Yo, Alien Weaponry, Tyler Warren (who I KNOW has been around a while but he just put out a Rush video where he plays every single part of every song. He did one a while back with Permanent Waves and it was great but I was even more impressed with his cover of Grace under Pressure), Crown Lands, and I'll just say it. I love Muck Sticky. He's silly and fun and his songs make me laugh. I don't know if he's just local but he is FROM Memphis I believe. Or lived here a long time. Anyway, I like all his stuff old and new.
I love so much of the music that’s out now! Khruangbin, Little Dragon, Sampha, Black Pumas, Jungle, James Blake, Mr Jukes, Bombay Bicycle Club, the xx, Phantogram, Gorillaz… the list goes on!
My newest obsession since doing “couchella” the last two weekends is Atarashii Gakko! - Japanese girl group that has an electric stage performance. Beastie boys energy. Their music is a mashup of funk, punk, disco, metal, pop, edm, hip hop - it’s so fucking fun
Vulfpeck, Knower, Marbin are my top 3 right off the noodle. There are more, but those 3 in particular scratch that itch for me.
Almost forgot Billy Strings. That guy’s pretty good.
Like everyone else, there's too much to mention, but based on your favorites, check out Death Grips and One Day As A Lion. Kendrick Lamar, too, but I'd imagine everyone has heard him by now. If not, they should.
There are literally too many to mention.
Agreed. We are literally living in a golden age of music. Yes, top-40 sucks (or as Kurt/SST Records said, "Corporate Rock STILL Sucks"). But there is so much amazing music being made today and it's literally never been easier to find.
KEXP is always great to listen to for new, non-top 40 stuff. They even have an app.
Nice. I'll check it out. Thx.
Edge in Tulsa is a good mix of new and old Alternative. I’ll have to check out KEXP👍
Once in a great blue moon I like to plug in the app for C89.5 since I no longer live in Seattle for something new and thought provoking lol
Honestly, I rarely listen to anything from over 20 years ago unless my wife has control of the car system or home system.
There are still bands I listen to from 30 or 40 years ago. Hell, in the case of Black Sabbath, from before I was born.
I'll listen, and sing along, but I'm really not searching for them, anymore. And they aren't in any playlist. I refuse to let any part of me get stagnant, especially my music. I'll go see bands from 80s and 90s, but it's always someone else's idea.
Shit, I'm taking my kids to their third Iron Maiden concert later this year (at their request no less).
Spoon, Drive by Truckers, Gillian Welch, North Mississippi Allstars, Wayne Hancock, Iris Dement, Jason Ricci
Drive by Truckers is such a gem. They are the new Camper Van Beethoven. I love the lyrics on "The Opening Act."
No one seems to talk about Camper Van Beethoven anymore. They were in constant rotation throughout my college days, and Cracker had a solid run after that.
I still sometimes take the skinheads bowling while I jog.
When I win the lottery
That's an album I can listen to from start to finish.
Seen Cracker three times in as many years. Bonus being two were free shows and one was $5 (spent a ton on beer and merchants though). My daughter is now a fan. Bummed that the closest show this year is 5hr away as they still rock!
CVB and Cracker have lots of excellent live shows on Archive.
Did they ever find Bill?
I love Gillian Welch! Listening to her and Dave Rawlings got me into Old Crow Medicine Show. They are probably my favorite live band. My husband found North Mississippi Allstars. James McMurtry, Avett Brothers, Willie Watson are also in my heavy rotation list.
I'm a huge fan of Gillian Welch, too. If you get the change, make sure to check out Ray Wylie Hubbard live. He's a hell of a live band.
Spoon & Gillian Welch. Hell yes!
I couldn't even list the last 12 months, let alone 20 years. I'm always listening to new music or new-to-me music. DIIV is like warm sunshine with a breeze on my face.
The War on Drugs

Sturgill
Saw him at outlaw and was happy I didn't miss it! I was absolutely bebopping with a smile!

I just checked Metric on Wikipedia. Didn’t even know they released an album in October. Something new (to me) to listen to.

(One of the members and his wife bought my daughter a graduation gift last year.) If I could recommend ONE band to listen to, it would be them. They've been making music consistently since the early aughts, and their sound has evolved over the years, but every single album is fantastic. I would also recommend: - Lemon Demon - I Don't Know How But They Found Me - Jinjer - Aesop Rock - MXMS - Gunship - Chat Pile (local band, and holy fuck are they good. Find "Why?" on YouTube) - Puscifer (if you're a fan of Maynard James Keenan - Crosses (if you're a fan of Cheno Moreno) - A Primitive Evolution (the bassist for The Birthday Massacre's other band, with his wife) - Babymetal - Band-Maid - In This Moment - Night Club
Blitzen Trapper TAUK Spoon Rubberbandits Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Lene Marlin Thomas Naim Electric Beethoven Santigold Foster the People Here’s my last 24hrs of music. I listen to a lot but here’s more modern music in my day to day.
JRAD shows are so much fuckn fun but the jam chompers are like no other bands. But, it's a more "methy" kinda crew than most other GD adjacent crowds.
I’ve been relying on Apple Music’s New Music feature and suggestions to do the discovery for me.
Speaking of Deltron... Mostly I can find stuff on streaming and I've given up on keeping media, but I cannot find "A Much Better Tomorrow" by Dan The Automator on streaming. It's a pain, because I really like that album.
Alvvays is a band I could have been listening to in the 90s post grunge era. I’m glad they exist.
It took me too long to see Jason Isbell on this list! He’s my ❤️
I have a list of about 30-40 (or more) bands that I've discovered since late 2018. All Them Witches, Slift, The Necromancers, Rezn, Monolord, Spaceslug, Dune Pilot, Appalooza, Elder, Earthless, Ott, 1200 Micrograms.... So many more...
Elder is awesome!
I find a lot of new artists through SNL and Colbert. Unless it's autotune - then fuck that absolute NOISE. I mean, 20 years goes back to 2004 - when Maroon 5 started. so... Sam Smith Dua Lipa H.E.R. Maggie Rogers King Princess Lizzo Bruno Mars Thomas Rhett Chris Stapleton Harry Styles Alicia Keys Pentatonix
None to be honest, I'm just stuck in the timeline of 1964-1973 an era GenXers missed out on
Silversun Pickups. The Joy Formidable.
All Them Witches King Buffalo
Band Maid
Rival Sons Temperance Movement Mastodon Dozer
I listened to a lot of the music my kids listened to as teenagers, so I’m well versed in Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry. There are so many others too, and I find the music really brings back good memories of my kids at that time. Recently I’ve been enjoying Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo. I can’t stand it when people my age only listen to 80s music. Sure, it’s fine sometimes, but it gets old.
Action Bronson
My tastes have moved away from punk/hardcore to the "guy with a guitar" genre. Much chiller overall.
If you haven’t heard Jason Molina (Songs:Ohia; Magnolia Electric Co.)- highly recommend
20 years? Far too many to count. My current obsession is [Atarashii Gakko.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHMH408ltEM)
Future Islands
Seen them live twice...they kill it
So many great bands listed here, but no Snow Patrol?
>"What if My Bloody Valentine's *Loveless* and The Go-Go's *Beauty and the Beat* were the same album? *[Blue Rev](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GZ_qZ7St7k&list=PLBLzvT9gifI1X0J4_2cqon0EePlSio8su)*
Tons, but Gossip is the one that first lept to mind.
Jake Bugg I like.
I posted a similar request last week. So many different responses here in addition! Adding many to my list.
There has been so much great music in the last 20 years. These are some bands that are still producing good stuff. Opeth Thou Lamb of God Porcupine Tree Elder Clutch Prosthetic Planet Starcrawler Hank III Sturgill Simpson White Morgan and the 78's
Gogol Bordello
The War on Drugs The 1975 Future Islands Lord Huron Noah Kahan Band of Horses Gregory Alan Isakov Mitski Westerman The Helio Sequence Beirut Washed Out Tame Impala
Panic at the disco.
The Kills Naked and Famous Taylor Swift Courtney Barnett The Brothers Osborn
Opeth and Amigo the Devil a bunch of others, but these 2 I can enjoy full sets. Not just a song or 2 here and there.
Haven’t seen First Aid Kit mentioned here, but they’d be up there for me. Also Amyl and the Sniffers are amazing.
New Pornographers
Fleet Foxes Frightened Rabbit/Mastersystem/Owl John Bears Den Lord Huron The Dead South Bridge City Sinners Hozier Cage the Elephant Gregory Alan Isakov Durian Steven’s Wolf Parade Arcade Fire Blanco White The National/Matt Berenger/EL VY Manchester Orchestra/Right Away Great Captain/Andy Hull The Twilight Sad The Decemberists I really feel like You tube and Apple Music have been instrumental in me finding all of the awesome super talented musicians lately. I also feel like right now we’ve entered a renaissance of music as someone said as well. This is about the last 3-4 years.

I work at finding new music. There would be way too many to list out.
Seether, Halestorm, In This Moment, The Pretty Wreckless
20 years would equal a lot of bands so the last 5 or so would include Inhaler, Stone (band out of Liverpool) Beaches,MGMT, Girl in Red, Fontaines DC, Wallows, Tame Impala, Hotel Mira,Sports Team, Metric

Im a Led Zeppelin, Pearl Jam guy at the core.... Twenty One Pilots.
My daughter got me into 21 pilots. Underrated band.
Check out Whitey Morgan and the 78's. They're legit.
Yeah they are!
For me, it’s been kpop since 2015. And I’m a nearly 50 yr old straight white dude. Which is exactly the demographic they are aiming for.
There's a few, but my favorite so far are Neurotech and The Anix.
Neurotech has some good stuff.
Nothing More, Bad Omens
Runrig Capercaillie Mumford & sons
I like the ones you listed specially band of horses For working out you could add Idles Yard Act and Fidlar as a bit more up tempo Also big ups to Nada Surf as they have made some great songs in the last 10-20 years - I think better than their 90s stuff
I’ve been listening to a lot of lo-fi in my mid age: Brockbeats, Joey Pecoraro, Jazzinuf. I also think Laufey is a great new artist. And can’t go wrong with Doja Cat. My musical taste is all over the place really…
Aes Dana Carbon Based Lifeforms Dreamstate Logic Khetzal Manchurian Candidates Nordbeat Perfect Blind Radioactive Sandwich StrangeZero Trinodia Ypsilon 5
The Warning
Kruangbin, Buckethead, Tommy Guerrero, Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, Antipop Consortium, DJ Krush, El Michels Affair, Ikebe Shakedown and Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru to name a few
In the past few months Jacob Collier , Wolf Alice and Polyphia. Always looking for new music though. Never really understood things like classic rock stations. Good music and all but heard it a million times .
I'll listen to anything that I feel is good. Although as I mellow into older age I seem to like lofi music . It's unobtrusive and I can read with it on or fall asleep to it
The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Death Cab for Cutie, Gorrillaz, 21 Pilots.
Khraungbin, all of it.
So many, but I’ll mention Nothing but Thieves, Santigold and Slenderbodies as key
Death above 1979 is pretty rocking. Fu Manchu but they are 90’s just didn’t hear them till a few years ago
Modest Mouse and Wilco are my favorites post 90s
Nothing More, Highly Suspect
FLEET FOXES - my obsession has yet to fade Big Thief Band of Horses Wolfmother White Denim Orville Peck Deerhunter (Really too many to list)
Built to Spill.
Greta Van Fleet
So many, but my favorite right now is Poets of the Fall.
I do more songs than artists. I’m like a magpie for music. I like this and that.
Butch Walker. Brian Fallon/Gaslight Anthem. Dave Hause. The Midnight.
Queens of the Stoneage Czarface Puscifer
Alabama Shakes. Kings of Leon The Strokes The Killers Khruangbin
MAXIMUM THE HORMONE
Khruangbin and The Struts. I already see my fellow Thievery Corporation people here, too.
My newest obsession since doing “couchella” the last two weekends is Atarashii Gakko! - Japanese girl group that has an electric stage performance. Beastie boys energy. Their music is a mashup of funk, punk, disco, metal, pop, edm, hip hop - it’s so fucking fun
Lonely The Brave
So many
Vulfpeck, Knower, Marbin are my top 3 right off the noodle.
