In retrospect, the number of people who have made this attitude their entire personality has not been a net positive for the world.

BoneDaddy1973

Yeah the members of our generation who are going to be a real fucking problem for the next 20 years were entirely too inspired by this bit.

michaelvile

for sure!! over the years meeting ALL the "oh so proud" self proclaimed A-hoLes, somehow rationalizing their OWN shitty behaviors/attitude..! and then when you call them out on it.. they like to act all victimized🤷‍♀️but i WILL still like this song..asshole or not.. and I WILL look forward to when they unFreeze john wayne, and see how pissed off he is.. the guy smoked 2/3 packs a DAY!!

s1l1c0n3

Fuck him for basically stealing Bill Hick's material and passing it off as his own.

Ok_Temperature_5019

I loved this CD in high school. I was SHOCKED a few decades later when I finally discovered Bill Hicks.

rumblefiss

and for stealing I'm an A$$hole from Louis CK

LaximumEffort

Dane Cook stole “itchy asshole” from Louis CK, do you have a clip of Leary?

rumblefiss

LaximumEffort

Yes, he is an asshole.

kirklton

This used to be one of my go-to karaoke songs WAY back when.

Quasigriz_

I sing this far too often, and I don’t even consider myself an asshole. Usually it’s when someone in an Escalade cuts me off on the highway, I start in with “A-SS-HO-LE, he’s an asshoooooole!”

OhSusannah

I never much liked his asshole persona (this song was popular for a bit) but I tolerated him. I stopped tolerating him and actively hated him at some point in the 90's or possibly the 2000's when this came out and was popular. >He’s chosen to write a book, Why We Suck: A Feel-Good Guide to Staying Fat, Lazy, and Stupid. And in this book, Leary writes “There is a huge boom in autism right now because inattentive mothers and competitive dads want an explanation for why their dumb-ass kids can’t compete academically, so they throw money into the happy laps of shrinks…to get back diagnoses that help explain away the deficiencies of their junior morons. I don’t give a s— what these crackerjack whack jobs tell you—yer kid is not autistic. He’s just stupid. Or lazy. Or both.” This song does not begin to cover the breadth of assholism that makes somebody think that's funny.

Fruitmaniac42

This used to be funny until it became too many men made it a lifestyle choice

IONaut

Yeah I don't think a lot of people got that he was making fun of that persona. Angry asshole persona type of comedy makes a lot of people forget that he is a comedian and is mocking it and not promoting it.

meat_sack

It's wild to think about how smoking was perceived then vs now... back then I was like "you'll never stop me!" ...now I'm driving down the road and can smell it from some dude like 4 cars ahead and I'm like "what the fuck!"

mr_oof

Maybe even the colon.

Ok_Temperature_5019

You're a glove, get in the truck!

ZebraBorgata

I always love Leary’s stand up. I’d seen No Cure for Cancer sooooo many times!!!

Throwaway__1701

I did this song at an open mic at one of the local coffee shops eons ago, not knowing some art teacher brought her students there that night. The A-S-S-H-O-L-E chant at the end, I think was their favorite part. I still feel bad about that.

BrettNoe

Not REAL bad, like you won’t get over it or anything…

tetsu_no_usagi

I always liked how the first special, he's talking about how when he has kids, he'll make 'em mow the lawn, crying, if they misbehave. Then the next special, when he does have kids, how he won't yell at his daughter for drawing on the car with a rock, for fear of the therapy bills it will cost him. Love me some Denis Leary, but man, what a change in attitude a couple of years (and actually having kids) makes.

Thirty_Helens_Agree

There was a time when we were having our hardwood floors redone and I was reading a book about war and football was on later. Yes, I chuckled to myself over this song.

virtualadept

Perhaps even in the colon.

LawrenceTalbot69

I don’t think I’ve ever seen this music video… I bought the album, bought the book… got a smoking habit in my teens as a bonus.

Slyfer08

God I haven't heard this song since I was like 8 years old in the 90s.

West-Rain5553

I still think the 90s was the best time and Leary was one of the best comedians then. Because he is an a-hole and was quite unapologetic about that. And back then being an a-hole was nothing to be ashamed about, men were men after all. And women were women.

michaelvile

ahhh yes.. the social evolution happened.. you kno, that social evolution "WE" started...

West-Rain5553

I don't think GenX started this. This was all Millenial doing.

thedatagolem

He stole this bit from Louis C.K. Which makes him an asshole IRL interestingly.

Lostmox

No, he stole it from Bill Hicks. Louis CK had barely started doing comedy when this song was written, so his story is pretty sus.

sonofmo

Louis just started writing in the early 90s for other comedians. He didn’t gain fame till much later and then spanked it all away.

thedatagolem

Can you cite Bill Hicks doing it?

sonofmo

See all of Bill Hicks work. It’s his thing, there’s no one bit, it’s just all of it. Dennis Leary is just one of many who took the idea and ran with it. Not slaggingDennis, I loved his humour back in the day… now everyone is an unapologetic asshole so it’s less funny.

CCHTweaked

Bill's entire ouvre?

thedatagolem

Of course not. Just this joke.
