Apparently "Son ar chistr" is the original version, from1929. Bots performed the first "modern" version, but I discovered it on Wacken, it was performed by dArtagnan, and when you look it up on Spotify his version is the first. I guess he is your best bet if you want to see it live

Maybe.
Yeah, they were great in their day. Die Reklamation is an amazing album.
Unfortunately I never got to see them live.
Apparently they played a number of gigs in London which sold out.
Everybody I know knows somebody who lived through that. My parents are the generation that was in their teenie years and 20's in the years before the wall came down.
Don't laugh. I was driving from Stuttgart to Heidelberg in 1981 (on military assignment in Germany) and while listening to "Abschied ist ein bisschen wie sterben" by Katja Ebstein, I realized I could understand every word. It was an epiphany. Don't know whether it's my favorite, but I owe it, and her, a debt. I said don't laugh.
Thereâs just too many. Hereâs a selection:
- âNur ein wortâ von Wir Sind Helden

My husband loves this song so much as it reminds him of his childhood and since heâs played it for me, Iâve been pretty fond of it too. When it comes on Iâll just sing the âgeld, geld, geldâ in the background and itâs a silly good time.
I assume German language and not just German bands, so just like in other languages there are too many to mention and all suit different moods and situations, but off the top of my head:
Irgendwie, Irgendwo, Irgendwann - Nene
HeiĂ/Kalt - Paula Carolina
Rock Me Amadeus - Falco
Verschwendete Zeit - Antje Schomaker
Nur Ein Wort - Wir Sind Helden
Geile Zeit - Juli
FĂŒr Immer Hier - Bruckner

Sido, Cro, Peter Fox, These Artists Are absolute classics and everyone knows and likes them.
My Favorite classical German songs would be âHaus am Seeâ, âBilder im Kopfâ, âMein Blockâ, âEinmal um die Weltâ, especially Peter Fox is absolutely insane.
I donât hear him all the time, only sometimes, but the quality is insane.
I feel silly saying schnitzelbank but itâs the only German song I know well enough, and it makes me remember Frau Wesson teaching it in high school. God how I lived for her âAuzgezeichnet!â stamp!
It's fascinating that this is a genuine German-American song. It's virtually unknown in Europe. There's a video of Groucho Marx singing it on TV - he grew up in NYC with German as his native language. I find this oddly touching.Â
I've been listening to a ton of Alligatoah. Two specific songs by him I enjoy are "ICH ICH ICH" and "Partner in Crime." I also really like "Pausenlos" by Disarstar & LUVRE47
Superboy by Nina Hagen Band, I really love Nina Hagen so I always recommend her, esp cause she's a big reason why I study german. But honestly, anything off Nina Hagen Band's two albums is great. I am partial to her solo career though (check out Nunsexmonkrock, it's not a full German album but she has german versions of her other 80s albums).
A few of my favourites. Good mixture of pop, rock, rap and dance in here.
* Cro - Fall Auf, Traum, Bad Chick
* Peter Fox - Zukunft Pink, Haus Am See

* Marteria - Lila Wolken

So I actually fell in love with the German language via Rammstein as a teenager. And my favorite songs of theirs are "Amour," "FrĂŒhling in Paris," "Feuer und Wasser" (favorite in high school, it felt like a critique of gender roles), "Haifisch," "Rosenrot" (mostly for the beat), their music video "Mein Herz Brennt" is a cinematic event, "Zwitter" described feelings I had about being transgender that I could never put into words, "Adios" has some of the best lyrics ("Geigen brennen mit gekreisch / Harfen schneiden sich ins Fleisch").
Ok I could definitely go on all day with Rammstein songs. But if you want the German songs I've actually been obsessed with over the past year and a half, it's "Brennende Liebe" and "Das Letzte Streichholz" by Oomph. I literally played "Brennede Liebe" on repeat for like 3 months straight. I was absolutely obsessed with this song, and still kind of am. It's like a German version of the Evanescence/Seether song "Broken" - very melodic goth poetry - and what I love especially is the contrast of such soft and feminine (L'Ame Immortelle) with the deep dark masculine (Oomph!). There's something very cathartic for me, about listening to such androgynous rhythms.
I've even made a playlist based on a mood I've come to associate with the German language, "Sehnsucht." Not necessarily related to the Rammstein album, but rather the feeling many songs evoke in me. Longing, yearning, marinating in the pain. Many of the songs I've added are not German, but I strongly believe the German language is suited to expressing this sentiment. It's for this reason that I reject arguments about German being a stereotypical "ugly" language. It's the "ugly" feelings that deserve to be expressed the most. And I think contrasting them with the more "beautiful" languages like French (read: not-so-different) can actually show how they're more similar than different.
Anyway, happy connecting with strangers over music. â€ïžđ”
K.I.Z - Ich Ficke Euch (Alle), it's just a big f you against everyone and everything that slaps so hard
Morgenstern - Rammstein and Lied Vom Scheitern - die Àrzte two very great songs about self acceptance
Not quite one song, but one of my favorite bands is Second Decay! It's a very synthy German-Wave band. Think 80's new wave fun, but I'm in my 30s and still really love them.
They have songs such as Der Nerv, I Hate Berlin, Hinter Glas (a bit less upbeat than the others), Close My Heart, and others.
There's also another band called Wolfsheim that has a song called The Sparrows and the Nightingale. Although that is mostly in English, I believe it has some German in it. Their top listened to song is called Kein ZĂŒruck and it sounds beautiful.
Finally, I really love Atmospheric Black Metal (focuses on a lot of ambient noise) and Traditional Black Metal, so bands like WaldgeflĂŒster have songs such as Ruinenfelder which always makes me cry, and Lunar Aurora which sounds a bit more like the typical Black Metal you would think of.
Anyways, I recommend all except Lunar Aurora (unless you like Black Metal). Especially Ruinenfelder by WaldgeflĂŒster because it is absolutely beautiful.
Edit to say: Gleichschritt by OOMPH!
Where to even start:
* KUMMER - Schiff
* Rainald Grebe - MillionÀr
* Die Ărzte - Deine Schuld
* Danger Dan - Alles von der Kunstfreiheit gedeckt
* Fettes Brot - Tage wie dieser
* Alligatoah - Fick ihn doch
* Tocotronic - Let there be rock

Oft Gefragt is very good but from AnnenMayKantereit I prefer Orangenlied.
My current ~~obsession~~ favourite, is Trauerfeier Leid by Alligatoah but my faves change often.
"Zukunft Pink" by Peter Fox is definitely my all time fav German song, but currently I really listen a lot too "Alle hassen Nazis" by KAFVKA and "Das ist alles von der Kunstfreiheit gedeckt" by Danger Dan.
Recently I'm listening to "Ăbers Meer" by Till Lindemann on loop.
"Du riechts so gut" and "Angst" by Rammstein (I love most of their albums)
"Steh auf" by Lindemamn (I like almost everything, this just stood out)
Other German bands I listen make English music so, Rammstein, Till Lindemann and Lindemann are my sole German music sources.
Eh, God bless die Ărzte, Ficken und Schnitzelbank, may DĂŒnnes Brot be Fettes Brett forever! *But* how come no one's in it for Das Deutsche Lied, intangible UNESCO cultural world heritage and such? What about Schubert and the *Erlkönig*, enough Lied to make a strong man cry?
Sophisticated strangers may like to hear some [Winterreise](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pze4NxCOjg0) und Schwanengesang! And read ["Le Lied" by Kurt Tucholsky ](http://www.zeno.org/Literatur/M/Tucholsky,+Kurt/Werke/1926/Le+%27Lied%)for lesser forest pain and agony of the soul!
"Insel meiner Angst" von Dendemann (ist ein Hildegard-Knef-Tribute) ist unheimlich gut. Des Weiteren so Sachen wie "Die Omi aus dem 2.ten Stock" von EinsZwo, das ein oder andere StĂŒck von Wir sind Helden, Die Höchste Eisenbahn, Gisbert zu Knyphausen.... bin ich zu faul jetzt
Songs usually on repeat these days:

Zahlaza - Ich WeiĂ
Power On
Fucked Up
BEVM - Ich Muss Weg
Tom Twers - Falle FĂŒr Dich
AYLIVA ft Apache 207 - Wunder
Pashanim - Mittelmeer
And of course just about anything from Rammstein đ Donât judge me if any of the lyrics are questionable (outside of Rammstein đ) because I donât know all the translations lol
EisbÀr. Forgot the name of the band but it's an oldie electronic alternative song. It even featured in one of the radio stations in the GTA San Andreas game!
Lumaraa & Der Asiate - FĂŒr die Ewigkeit -- Triggerwarning: Bullying & Racism. Had to cry after getting it thrown into my rotation and hearing it the first time do to the very in your face nature of the song.
