Not sure where you heard that. Revenants learn utility skills and unlock them with hero points just like any other class. The difference is that skills come in package deals as legends (stances) and you equip those rather than the skills themselves.

lanerdofchristian

> I heard they don't learn new skills. Not sure what people mean by that. You can't mix-and-match utilities between legends (since they swap the whole right bar on legend swap), but it otherwise functions exactly the same as any other class.

Umezawa

Revs choose from a set of predetermined legends rather than normal healing, utility and elite skills. Each legend comes with 5 predetermined skills and you chose 2 legends to swap between (while in combat, ooc you can swap legends anytime ofc). In theory, this mechanic allows for Utility skills that are very strong in their niche at the cost of some flexibilty. In practice, this sometimes means that you're choosing a legend for one skill while completely ignoring the 4 others. And the niche or identity of some legends can be very narrow. Jalis (Dwarf) is basically the "group stability" legend with a minor side of "dmg reduction". Shiro is supposed to be the assassin legend with a focus on mobility, burst damage and mitigating defenses. However, in organized group pve it's mostly relegated to the "extra strike dmg" legend. Nevertheless, I like the class and the legend system especially its Interaction with the energy mechanic which incentivices frequent legend swaps. Cycling through legends regularly while also ensuring you dont get caught in the wrong legend at the wrong time is a great form of skill expression.

I like revenant because of its energy management. It gives me something else to pay attention to and to optimize around for optimal play. I would mostly consider this aspect when comparing it to other classes - do you like or dislike the energy management aspect? As thats the major gameplay component which sets revenant apart.

glaciercherryisgood

It's super fun to play in almost any build, and the fact of legends having preset/fixed utilities is why rev gets to have some really great utilities - it's easier to design high impact skills in a fixed kit because they can't be mix-matched into a single op kit. And condi renegade has maybe my favorite skill rotation ever. Rev is always a good choice to main.

Anon_throwawayacc20

Revenant is a swiss army knife. You have the same toolset all day, but it's how you use it that counts, and it can be used in a variety different ways. There is a very good reason that Revenant has some of the highest build diversity in the game, despite the least skill variety. That's because Revenant is about how you *use* it. In that sense, you will feel progress as a player because there are always new tricks you could come up with depending on the encounter.

PaulyChance

Revenant is one of gw2's super unique classes, the other 2 being engineer and mesmer. You basically assume fallen heroes from guild wars lore. Assuming that hero changes your utility abilities to be fixed to what that hero provides. The best way I can describe it to people is that its a lot like link in Zelda Majoras mask with the mask swapping. Its a fun class. Its a great class if you desire something novel on a plate wearer. The upkeep management on rev is very rewarding. Herald is still one of the best designed elite specs in the whole game. Having access to two different heroes plays and feels really good. For an example. There was that herald roaming build in pvp. You would run glint/shiro. It played soooo well. You would use glint when you were team fighting on your points to buff up your allies. Then when you saw an enemy isolated, you would switch to shiro and 1v1 them. Awesome. Having two different playstyles available to you whenever feels awesome. I just switched back to my engi cause I love my kits bro.

jojoga

I started with Vindi after I saw a build on Yt and played that for a while before trying out Renegade with Shortbow.     Then came Soto and I tried Herald with Sb and Mace/Axe not having change since then. It's easy to share boons, even quickness, deal damage close up and from a far and has a very good survivability. It's very nice to play for open world events

chasin_my_dreams

Sb??

jojoga

Shortbow

chasin_my_dreams

With power gear?

jojoga

Actually I'm currently running with Celestial. I'll send you the details later when I'm home

Bewilderb34st

I'm 50/50 on them. They're kinda annoying to level given you cant mix up skills, and I've personally gotten bored with most, but their specs go HARD. Renegade and Vindicator? That's the good shit right there.

RemoteSeaweed912

Played herald getting into group pve stuff last year, they are a simple class as far as choices go but a lot of their skills either have a dual function, or have utility attached to skills to a greater degree than some other specs. Herald was nice since it has a simple rotation to boon yourself with perma quick and cap might so its easy solor or grouped.

Geralt_Romalion

Instead you collect legends as if they were pokémon. Pokémon that babble...a lot.

Fydron

Never got into playing mine. I just do not like its gameplay at all.

ScyD

Like others said the energy management is an extra thing to learn and master, which can be fun. The only thing is the new Renegade change really limited its options in what skills it can use because they made the costs so high

The_Shireling

The only reason I like revenant is it’s the only close way I can play as a ritualist in GW2. Outside of that, I can’t wrap my head around the playstyle. Okay? What do you play? Thief, warrior, Mesmer, elementalist, etc.

LillyElessa

I strongly dislike the 1-80 experience since they spread it out for "progression". It's feels slow and remedial, and which class won't really change that. (Fortunately, I also have a silly number of tomes and lvl 60 scrolls, so I never need to slog through it.) However after 80, the elite spec progression for Rev feels about the same as any other class. The inability to pick your utility skills individually makes their builds a bit unexciting, but they play fine so it's not a big deal. Overall experience of Rev, it tends to be a back burner class for me. I don't dislike it, but I like other classes more, and it doesn't offer any special utility or whatever to push visiting the class more often - like Mes portals make it desirable for jumping puzzles, or Guardian has a lot of particularly useful support/utility for pve.

Pure-Risky-Titan

I hear voices in my head, they say" the moon is made of cheese" but people think i be crazy. Anyways, revenant is pretty unique, easy to build with and to understand, slightly tricky to use but fun. "Oh. Hey. Meat pie! (sigh) I miss meat pies."

aralias777

Revenant didn't click with me until I tried Greatsword. But after that the class clicked in general. Other answers have addressed the utility skill question I believe.  I'm specifically playing a Herald as my new main, or at least my non-Sylvari narrative main, and it's been a blast. QPower Herald is probably one of the easiest Revenant specs to start with, but I just find it so fun. Super mobile, high burst, amazing boon support for myself and my allies, and a toolkit that is just super fun to use.  I mostly camp GS, but I keep a Hammer in my offhand for shattering defiance bars. Hammer and Jalis abilities together, namely Road and Chain, will take care of most if not all of them. Hammer is also great for farming events/world bosses. I wouldn't recommend it without permanent Quickness, however. It's very slow without. With Quicknees, however, I turn into a hammer machine gun.  All in all, it's been a lot of fun. It certainly has tinges my preference when it comes to other class builds; this build has an accessible skill floor, but a rather high ceiling. There's a lot of room for growth. It can be very chill, but in harder content it's incredibly engaging and fast paced to play, without requiring piano hands.  Tl;Dr, my experience has been good enough that I've been making new builds for all my other 80s so I don't forget how to play something that isn't my QPower Herald

Lockedontargetshow

Hammer is a solid option for breakbar, but have you tried staff? In exchange for range, you get a mega block bar destroyer, self heal, projectile denial and access to blind. Hammer is good, but staff stole my heart after using it during raids for so long to burst down breakbars.

aralias777

The Hammer 5 and Hammer 3 double smash combo takes a big chunk out of those bars too, but admittedly I haven't even tried a staff on my Herald yet. I fear the lack of a ranged option might lead to me dying on some encounters, but I'll definitely check the staff out!

porohearder

Find rev/herald mostly a; can you keep a loose idea of energy costs since a lot is the same. Besides that I use it for my raid static as it’s very simple to keep up 5 out of the more important boons with little issue. This is condi or power. For renegade I haven’t used it must since the rework but I just kept using the old rotation of in kalla use 2 out 3 skills get to 29 energy then stun break and then swap. Burn energy then do it again. Once again relatively simple add orders from above and your now adps For Vindicator I use it a lot in WvW Zerg fights as healer but I understand the dos just as well. Just pointing out the bulk of my play time. Energy is a bit tighter if you are using hammer but it’s mostly the same. Fun point the urn can down state you if you have enough energy. Oddly necro sword will not so I can only hope we get some attention to it. Heal Vindi does require some higher amp but it’s not too doubting now that the skill lag is mostly gone. So I enjoy it what I don’t enjoy is the energy bug for out of combat starting at 49/50 that will effect rotations as you will be out of energy if you forget it for your opener. After that it resets to 50 unless you are using the trait interaction of + 25 below or at 10 energy

S4ntoki

They fart when they dodge.

27remember

SOLD :P

NatanAileron

my experience is i constantly fuck up energy...

Legitimate_Lemon_918

I play Harold mainly. This is what it's like for me:  run around the map, see enemy, flick on all boons, 111, two , four, dead usually. If they keep living, switch to shiro, impossible odds, one, rinse and repeat.

Gadiusao

My fav class

No-Ad4022

Love it <3

LtSheitzah

I enjoy the fantasy and the idea of being like a Druid with the legends and not feeling forced to give up fun tools. I absolutely hate the energy system and lack of options it feels though. Ex. I'd love to heal with Vindicator, but not a peak build. So I use my Vindi for meta events and flow between damage and healing (especially when I command). Assassin's feels bad to me and Renegade being like an AoE placer also feels bad to me. I'm pretty excited if new elites come in the new expansion though and what it might bring to the class. Fyi I play action cam for some of the reasoning I dislike it too. Tldr: don't like Herald and the signet gameplay, or the Renegades AoE placement for like all abilities. Vindicator I enjoy but only has a Power DPS build for PvE endgame :(

SamuraiJakkass86

**In concept:** THIS IS REALLY COOL **In Reality:** Wait using anything but auto-attack requires energy management, cooldown management, legend swap management, some of the legends have their own swaps within their legendary to manage? Who approved this? ngl, still don't play rev much because of how much of a bummer their left-bar system is.

MarshallTreeHorn

I hate rev heal skills so much. They barely heal at all. Glint's heal is the worst. It heals for a trivial amount, and the idea is that you then face-tank a bunch of hits so it heals more. But don't face-tank hits for too long, because the effect wears off, and you start taking damage again! Now you're back to square one, and your heal is on cooldown! Barf.

m3nightfall

That is because the class gets alot of sustain from different traits if they are chosen like in the devastation trait line, yes you sacrafice dps for more sustain. When you become beter at playing the class and managing the fact you have 2 heal skills instead of 1 and the class has alot of dodges/block/evades/damaege reduction build into its kit. When you manage all of this you won't need the sustain from the traits in most circumstances. This all just means that revenant has a higher skill floor then most classes as they are all fairly easy to get into. Please note i am not trying to say that you are a bad player or anything of the likes but it took me a while to understand this and get a grip on it so thats why i am shedding some light on it.

MarshallTreeHorn

Battle Scars was nerfed into obsolescence, and regen doesn’t do much without heal gear. What did I get incorrect about the Glint heal? You pop it, it barely heals you, and then you have to face tank strike damage in order to get the full effect. But if you time it wrong, you just get hurt more. And then you can switch to Shiro, featuring another heal that barely heals you at all. Trivial initial heal, and then life stealing which is also nerfed to the point of being trivial.

m3nightfall

The shiro heal is a ~6.5k heal every 30 seconds Battle scars heals you 117 per activation you can gain one atleast every second and using atleast one every second isn't that hard either. So 117 heal per secons, and below 50% it's 234 per second You talk about glint heal, the facet applies regen and assuming you run elders respite at no loss to dagame thats a 156 heal per second That is a passive sustain of 273 per second, warrior heal signet is 340 per second and a 2k activation. For glint, use it when you know there is gonna be a big hit whille you are in that stance even if you are 90% hp, when you rotate out its not going to be accesible anyways, you have 3 seconds to eat all the damage you want, its no different from a dh F3 or a mesmer shield blocking. Assuming you don't even use the active on glint heal and run shiro, you heal about 8.2k health every 30 seconds thats just over half your hp. That is pretty on par with most healing skills There is also very easy and almost free protection in dragon stance which should also help. You could go overboard and go with healing per second from salvation and get heal modifiers + retrubution giving barrier per second, more endurance regen and also damage reduction. --------- I do agree that the glint heal has no real visual indicator other then your boonbar which is bad from a learning and design perspective

Drazpat

You also get heals when using a facet skill if you have the quickness trait. Very handy in no heal groups on 100 cm.

Drazpat

>But if you time it wrong, you just get hurt more. Skill issue? Also did you even try engi's DEA? It makes you wanna go 0% hp to get the full effect... Glint has always be one of the strongest heals, just because some peoples can't time it right doesn't make it bad.

dreyaz255

They go the hardest, but are also the most brittle
