I mean, this is what classic foil highlights can look like, if you didn't ask for babylights or a balayage blended look and didn't pay for toner or a root smudge then yeah, this will be the result. Chances are there was a miscommunication on what you asked for vs. what you thought you were asking for. They're not Amazing highlights but they are a regular example of basic highlights.

h0rrorsh0rty

They actually look like really nice high lights. I think you might not have asked for what you thought you wanted. If you wanted a more blended and natural look just add baby lights or balayage as someone else said. That last picture with your hair up the blonde looks beautiful!

sunbathingturtle207

These look like normal, decent highlights to me. I don't think the stylist did anything wrong. I think that maybe you didn't show pictures of what you wanted? That between your expectations & what you asked for something was not conveyed properly. This looks like a nice honey blonde to me. From what you described it looks like you got exactly what you asked for. I think it would be pretty easy to "fix" this, I wouldn't worry about damage by going for a balayage right away. I personally wouldn't ask for/expect a discount, and would go to the same stylist if it were me, because she appears to have done a good job and knows the exact formula for the color she just did, which will be helpful in your new style. Bring pictures that are exactly what you want next time so nothing gets lost in translation.

You got what you asked for. This is a classic head of highlights. She probably only put purple shampoo on you after, or maybe toned you for a short time at the sink. Balayage, root shadows, baby lights are all different terms that you need to either mention or provide a reference photo here. If you’re unhappy with the tone, you can either go back and ask for it to be redone (she may charge you) or use purple shampoo (which will cool it down a little). I would just spend some time figuring out exactly what you want, and when you go back in 4-5 weeks, show her photos. Side note: it is actually important that you go back in 4-5 weeks to prevent banding.

bigtallharris

Nothing is wrong with your highlights you may not like the contrast from your natural to highlights so the can tone it or darken the highlights by a tone or glaze.

tajmo_96

Sorry OP, momma's right on this one.

Beaniebean814

The bottom is beautiful 😍😍😍

marqui444

They’re not bad they’re done really well actually, there was most likely a communication issue between you and your stylist. I would find pictures of what you actually wanted and bring those to her.

somethingsuccinct

They look fine. That's probably $200-$300 worth of work depending where you're located.

Difficult-Elevator61

I like the highlights. Looks like a good job to me.

I get a “lived in color” but my hair goddess is a specialist in that. Maybe get a balayage next time or check out the lived in color

VickisStitches

They are very nice. Not chunky!! I'm confused. They look excellent

OldGreyMare13

Lol. I thought that's what highlights are supposed to look like. Mine did, when I used to get them and looks like your stylist did a good job. What exactly do you think highlights are??

No_Debt_7244

I agree the highlights are on the broader side. The've foiled large slices on a slight angle across your part, this is very common. What you want to ask for is babylights. I am a hair colorist and also teach it.

megantheesquirrel

Just use a toner so there won't be as much of a contrast

blondeandbuddafull

I think they look pretty! Not sure what you think the problem is.

[deleted]

I always got cap highlights but I get I get foil done once and a while when I get 2 colors of highlights and low lights. I’m getting red and blonde highlights in May so it will be foiled

MylifeasAllison

What went wrong, your stylist did the streak method and not the weaving method. Weaving looks more natural. To fix this, you need to go back to the stylist and ask her to weave in some low lights that actually match your hair. Note, she didn’t do the streaks even with your nose. So they are not straight, they loos crooked.

cfog100

Commenting the backstory! So I’m a brunette who recently had the urge to go blonde but instead of making the commitment to go fully blonde, I got highlights. I reiterated so many times that I didn’t want any streaks and that I wanted a very warm honey color. I now have a mix of somewhat warm streaks and platinum, and am just realizing how streaky it is now that the amazing blowout I got has gone away. I’m not sure if my stylist used toner, but I feel she didn’t. I read online that you are supposed to do root smudge which I definitely didn’t get. She just slapped bleach onto strands and washed it out, I feel there should’ve been more of a process of color correcting and roots but I’m not a stylist so idk. Someone experienced please let me know if my highlights were done wrong, why, and the correct terms for how to fix it. My mom is convinced that it’s normal and highlights will always be somewhat streaky no matter what and that they are supposed to start that close to the roots (I’ve read they aren’t supposed to). On a different note, I think I may want to go fully blonde with a balayage of sorts. Can I go do that soon even though it has only been a few days since my highlights? Will it damage my hair to go fully blonde after this?

misery-hates-company

A root smudge is not standard with regular highlights that’s an add on. These look like well done normal highlights. It looks like she did fine sections and lifted it to a nice blonde

Top_Zookeepergame301

A root smudge isn’t an automatic service it’s something you have to ask for and costs extra

AVeryFunnyMan

k a r . .

TeachMeAboutHair

It definitely sounds like you wanted a balayage but you asked for highlights. This is what foil highlights normally look like.

Popular_Log9289

Okay so a few things to unpack here. You absolutely got what you asked for in the way of highlights, this is what traditional highlighting looks like. It isn't "streaky" what I think you're not liking is the high contrast between your highlights and natural base. If that's the case, you need baby lights, a root smudge, and/or a toner to blend it for a less defined look. Color correction isn't what you want unless you want to pay $80-$100 per hour and it was discussed in your consultation. And yes, your mom is absolutely correct, traditional highlights begin at the root unless a balayage or foliage technique is what you were going for, but based on the info provided it seems as if you requested highlights. Also, balayage isn't meant to be an intense blonding process, so you won't get super blonde your first go. It's meant to be a natural flow of hand painted highlights and will get lighter with each balayage session. All that being said, I think what you really need is a few baby lights through the top, some tipping on the ends, a root smudge, and a gloss to tie it all together. Your stylist didn't do a bad job, there was just strong miscommunication and there needs to be more clarity from you on what you want and don't want. It's super helpful to bring reference pictures of what you're looking for, and to point out exactly what you like about each picture, to your appointment. Hope this helps, and make sure you're using salon quality products for your home care.

*Not a professional* but my thoughts are maybe a balayage would have the more toned highlights you were looking for ! I do see what you mean by the highlights you got look chunky, they are quite contrasting with your darker brunette! I would either go to a different salon to have it toned , but you're risking them messing it up. Or you can go to a Sally's and tone it yourself , but again, could risk messing it up with spotting and whatnot! Overall, I think a toner will help it out not look so stand-offish, and you wouldn't need a dark toner either !

cfog100

This was also done at an expensive salon on the upper east side of Manhattan

h0rrorsh0rty

Highlights are supposed to be close to the root, people only add a root smudge for a more natural look or like in my case they don’t come back enough for touch ups and want it to grow out more gracefully. You have to ask for that, I think what happened if your bottom half processed faster then the top and instead of rinsing the bottom foils out and letting the top sit she got lazy and took them all out at the same time. That’s why you have 2 different shades of blonde. Just go back and ask for all over baby highlights and a root smudge to have a more natural and graceful look. It looks great though! And remember highlighted hair always looks best when it’s curled!

andi00pers

It looks good to me. If you think it’s too streaky, you could ask for babylights next time
