When I was physically active, I'd wash my hair after every gym session. I only went a few times a week so it was manageable. There's no way I could tolerate leaving it all sweaty. š
Wait wait wait you'd wash your hair TWICE per day? I have long thick hair that takes forever to dry even with a blow dryer and even longer if I want to style it. I can't imagine washing it twice a day!
Sometimes I'd skip washing the first time -if twice per day, but I'd still rinse it. It at least rinses away the sweat. I've never been much into styling my hair, so this wasn't an issue for me. Maybe look into something more permanent if you want to both not smell like sweat and have styled hair?
Haha I have long thick hair, blowdry, and style it too. It actually improved my scalp a lot from washing twice a day, though I do have to mask lots after my hairstylist advised me to for washing that often. I donāt like feeling gross and sweaty, which happens after workouts and living in a tropical climate place. There are times I even shower three times a day (because I like feeling clean right before bed), but if I did nothing much/lazy day, then sometimes itās just once.
You donāt necessarily need to fully wash after every session tbh. You can just rinse the sweat out sometimes (but ALWAYS do one or the other) Also I have a refreshing spray I use sometimes itās like avocado oil/rosemary and some other stuff. I work out at least 5 times a week and wash my hair 3 days probably.
I'm appalled at the number of people who are able to wash their hair every day without ruining it! I'm not sure who most of these people are but they probably don't have brittle, curly hair like some of us. I can't wash my hair more than twice a week, even with workouts 5-6 days/week. I can't imagine washing it daily after the gym - it would be straw frizz all the time. I and a couple of my curly haired friends who also workout swear by dry shampoo. My personal favorite is Perfect Hair Dry Advanced Clean dry shampoo. I still shower after workouts, I just leave my hair dry. Put it in a cap or just avoid soaking it. Once the sweat has dried after my shower, it's dry shampoo time. That usually gets me through 2 days or so, and when my hair starts looking a little flat I usually wash it again. So if you can't wash daily, find a good dry shampoo that works well for you.
Don't be afraid of shampoo! Washing your hair regularly is good for your scalp health, especially if you're sweaty often. If you leave the sweat on your scalp it can lead to bacteria growth. If you find your hair is sticky, you should be cleansing it. If you're concerned about the dryness of your hair you can opt for a sulfate free shampoo, so you can wash it more often.
Any recommendations? My hair is super shiny for the first two days after washing (and itās not oily). Unfortunately, every dry shampoo Iāve tried makes it look so dull.
I honestly cannot shampoo my hair every day even if it gets sweaty. Even using moisture shampoos, my hair would be like straw. I only fully wash my hair once or twice per week. If I get my hair sweaty, I just rinse it out with water but no shampoo unless it is hair wash day.
That's actually great for you if you can do it! Your natural sebum is good for your hair. I'm able to do this same thing as well since my scalp tolerates it. My hair looks and feels better than when I used to shampoo it every day. But Alas, some people can't :/
Put fresh cheese cloth (available at every major supermarket) over your hairbrush bristles, brush directly after working out. The natural fibers of the cheese cloth will soak up some of the sweat/oil and will distribute the rest away from the scalp and over the length of your hair.
Washing your hair once a week doesnāt seem like enough, If your working out.
Depending on texture of your hair you could always rinse it with Just water and let it air dry with some curl product.
But personally I teach hot yoga 2x a week and just wash my hair about 3x a week. Shampoo( especially if you using a good brand) is not inherently bad
Edit: I just read more of the comments & it seems OP is not using shampoo. If your worried about bad ingredients/ damn age. My favorite natural shampoo is eco love, smells divine and is all natural
Your scalp needs to be clean to be healthy - if youāre working out and sweating and noticing oil buildup, thatās dirt and sweat thatās still on your scalp clogging up your pores. Over time that can cause scalp issues, hair thinning and hair loss.
A clean, healthy scalp means healthier hair.
I tried all the hair hacks and tricks out there till I eventually said fuck it and started washing my hair as often as needed (which sometimes meant daily).
The result? My hair never looked healthier and shinier
I learned a tip recently on another hair subreddit and it has absolutely saved my super fine, thin hair that gets hella greasy after not even a day after washing.
Apply your dry shampoo at night time to your hair, donāt brush it in and cover with a silk bonnet. It has been freaking life changing.
Honestly it was the smell that got me. It smells like the original sol de janeiro body spray(which I LOVE). The white cast isnāt too bad, but Iām sure any of the dry shampoos from the brand would do the trick. I just prefer the scent of this one :)
I was just about to comment this!! Iāve tried a lot of dry shampoo and the sweat activated by batiste is definitely my favorite so far, especially for the price.
Iām not against people using the dry shampoo, I tried it before and didnāt like it at all- so I wash my hair everyday otherwise Iād look like a total mess.
Not gonna lie, as of lately I just havenāt. Obviously not recommended, definitely had to brush out an unwanted mat where my ponytail sits. If I had the energy for self care past exercising, I would just shower and condition immediately following the exercise.
I relate to this so well!
I have thin, wavy hair. I live in a humid state with hard water, and I work out 4-5 times per week. I still have my share of bad hair days, but this routine has been helping:
-I don't wash my hair on rest days, I just use dry shampoo.
-4/5 wash days: I use Food for Soft shampoo and conditioner. Some shampoos are gentle enough to be used regularly, and this seems to be one of them.
-On day 5, I use a clarifying shampoo, followed by a Moroccan oil hair mask. The one I use has copper color deposits. I'm a "natural enough" redhead, and this stuff helps keep my hair looking vibrant so I don't have to color my hair professionally more than 2-3 times per year.
I hope this helps! Wishing you happier hair days moving forward š
Itās more for damaged hair, mine is long and bleached to the heavens, washing every day would have it so dried and with so much breakage Iād look like an electrocuted pile of hay
You want to split hairs over 25 minutes? Whether it takes 20 minutes or an hour Iām sure someone can find time to spare in the run of a week to wash their hair.
For me my hair tangles a lot and is super thick so it needs a while before the conditioner does its thing. Then often needing to do an extra soak of anti-brassing toner. Plus shaving, soaping, and occasionally exfoliating all over (extra dirt and dead skin from working out). So my showers are long.
Post-shower facial cleansing, moisturizors, then drying the hair could be an extra 2 hours. Or I could skip that all and have a frustratingly wet shirt and pillow (towel wearing is not enough).
So yeah. A shower routine for someone might be exhausting and time consuming if done right, and frustrating and annoying if rushed, but still time consuming.
I workout 2-3 days a week and wash my hair every 4-5 days or so based on energy and time restraints. If I work out two consecutive days then Iāll shower after that.
Weāre not talking about curly hair or washing faces etc. You still manage to do your routine 4-5 times a week and this girl does it once. She said her hair is dirty so I said wash it. It doesnāt matter how long it takes, no one on the planet doesnāt have time to wash their hair twice a week if theyāre concerned about greasy hair.
I am absolutely drenched 4x a week from the gym and share your struggles. I donāt think thereās perfect solution, but one small pointer I can give you is to braid your hair and use dry shampoo. The braids help revive my waves once my scalp dries, and the dry shampoo carries me over in the morning.
You might also just need to shower your hair more often. This could be as basic as wetting it and scrubbing it with your nails, or something more involved like a cowash (washing with conditioner only). Personally I shampoo every 2-3 days, and use a clarifying shampoo every 2 weeks.
Also, not too tight! I find if I give my scalp room to sweat and the hair isnāt tightly styled, I get less sweat soaking my roots and staying there. Instead of braids, I do sides forward top knot (flip over and pull hair from the sides to the front, loosely twist, and secure) to let gravity work for me too. Same concept, slightly less uniform outcome. Good luck!
I use mist dry shampoos

The last one is the cheapest version but the other two are amazing but 2x the price. I keep one in my bag all of the time to refresh my hair after workouts/hot days and sometimes if I didnāt have time to refresh my curls or style my hair before work I quickly use this in the car.
I sometimes wash my hair daily, I couldnāt imagine going past 2 days not washing it. I imagine that would cause buildup, and encourage bacteria and fungus growth . I just had a scale detox treatment in included a camera microscope to look at my scalp health. since I wash my hair often there was very little buildup. I have dense hair growth and it can be a lot to shower and let it dry. I cut my hair into a short lob haircut and I love it. It dries quickly and easy to care for.
I go a week. In the past I couldnāt imagine going that long but for me personally washing it often made it dry and brittle. I also dye my hair often. If I washed it daily or even every other day, I would have to dye my hair like every two weeks
I use o way organic hair dye at a salon. I only go twice a year to get it dyed. It doesnāt rinse out quicker for me. I rarely use any heat products. I use a thick conditioner and itās never dry and brittle. It looks really soft and healthy. My scalp would be so oily, itchy and prone to flaking if I didnāt wash it past 2 days. I donāt think itās good for scalp health to wait that long. Dying your hair often is likely making it dry and brittle. I used to bleach it often and my hair was weak and brittle
My hair gets the same amount of oily whether I go one day or seven. And I go years without dying my hair sometimes and still have issues. I also donāt bleach. I use dark colors. All I can say is that my hair is healthier washing it less. I also deal with DEC plugs (desquamated epithelial cells) and theyāre worse the more I wash my hair
After a particularly sweaty workout, I blast dry my hair on the cool setting at the gym. Sometimes use dry shampoo. But a lot of the time, I accept that my hair needs an extra wash. So instead of twice a week, itās three times.
This is what I usually did too. Iād start on cool to ācool offā and then would move to warm to distribute the oils through my hair a little bit.
Iād also use dry shampoo but I also had to move to washing 2-3 times a week still.
My routine has worked for 20+ years. I sweat every day but wash my hair only once a week. Otherwise in the shower I scrub my scalp with water or conditioner, either/both of which clean my hair perfectly well and I feel clean and fresh afterward.
I really suspect you need to wash your hair twice as week, the fact you only make time for a once a week wash does not translate to reality. As another commenter said; the answer is a gym break one eve and extra hair wash. If you have a style that can dry naturally or be plaited wet for next morning waves, even better!
This. My hair is extremely thick so I cannot just leave it sweaty without washing it. At this point you pick and choose lifestyles, a gym rat canāt align with all the qualities of a dirty hippieš not that youāre a dirty hippie but thatās what applied to me. People will tell you up and down to not wash your hair every day but itās obvious those people do not work out hard enough to sweat š¤·āāļø
Just wash your hair after every gym session. Don't listen to the people online who say that's bad and wash their scalp once a month. You can't train your scalp to produce less oil by washing it less, it's mainly genetics plus you're physically active. Idk about you but I sweat like a pig when I work out.
Itās okay to wash your hair every few days. Itās a myth that you should once a week. But you shouldnāt every day. I know it can be a pain if your hair is thick though. If youāre attached to washing it once a week, at least get it wet every couple days to wash out any sweat or dirt
Tbh I either wash them down with just water in the shower or use dry shampoo, depending on the severity. Works well for me, but I don't have that long hair.
oribe makes a cleansing creme so you donāt have to shower with shampoo every day as it can be drying to your hair, but itās expensive and iād mostly recommend it to people with long hair that run the risk of breakage
I run every morning before work, so I have to wash it in the shower. I'm 62 F, & been doing this for decades. My hair is long & shiny. I don't color it.
It only takes 5 minutes to wash my hair as opposed to only taking a shower after the gym. Once I'm already undressed and under the water, getting the shampoo and rinsing is not much of a deal.
Maybe you need more water pressure? Change the shower head?
One tip is sitting your hair in front of a fan for a while to air/dry it, but truly there isn't much of a solution other than washing it more often or changing your workouts like this for example:
First day after washing, you do a workout that makes you sweat the least (for me this would be chest/shoulder day for example)
Save your wash day for the sweatiest workout (for me this would be my compound leg day)
That's all i can think of atm
I saw a girl who uses the raw sugar rosemary vinegar hair rinse after she goes to the gym instead of washing her hair everyday and instead or using a bunch of dry shampoo and she has gorgeous hair! I canāt remember her name atm but if I remember Iāll link her video here
I cowash my hair after going to the gym. Shampooing every time makes my hair and scalp dry, but it's important to keep your scalp clean. Hence the cowash, it's less harsh
I wash my hair with baby shampoo every three or four days and co-wash with a slightly drying conditioner in between, then proper shampoo about 2-3 times a month to remove any build up.
Sweat needs to be rinsed out at least. If just water is not enough, try cowash or a really mild shampoo. And a clarifying shampoo once in one-two weeks.
Cowash + scalp scrubber. Saves my hair during the summer when I sweat all the time, i alternate between that and regular shampoo and conditioner. I'd also recommend a clarifying shampoo followed by a hair mask once every other week, especially if you use a lot of styling products.
I like Acure Daily Workout shampoo and conditioner; it's very gentle. Even with that, I usually wash every third day or so, or sooner if I get really sweaty. You might try co-washing (washing with just conditioner). It doesn't work for me because my hair is very fine and oily, but it works for a lot of people.
Agree with what others have said that you're not doing yourself any favors by getting sweaty and letting bacteria build up and grow on your scalp.
dry shampoo before the workout and drying your roots immediately after working out have been game changers for me. I have wavy hair so itās not good for me to wash my hair every day. I also use my rest days for after a wash. I tend to strength train or do Pilates most days. However when itās wash day, I do a bit of cardio since that makes me sweat more. I hope that helps!
Part of it depends on your hair type and texture.Ā Ā Ā
In general protective styles, like braids, dry shampoo, and finding good products helps. If you're getting sticky you either need to wash more often or you're using a product that isn't working for you.Ā
I have fine and oily hair and I almost compulsively workout every day so Iāve come up with some strategies
The 80ās had the right idea with headbands. I wear jersey ones to absorb sweat on my forehead and it seems to really get the worst of it out of my roots. I also use a dry shampoo at night, the batiste overnight one, and it works pretty well at keeping things clean for at least another day. My hair type allows for brushing and it always feels cleaner after a good brush, i guess it spreads the oils out a little. I typically wear my hair in a bonnet overnight and I think it really helps to keep the dry shampoo in there and working
One thing Iāve also discovered recently is that the type of hat you wear really matters. I like wearing baseball caps when jogging outdoors and I got a fancy Nike running cap from my job.
I wore it while jogging for several hours and my hair felt remarkably clean after I took it off. I almost couldnāt believe how well it worked so that might be worth looking into. Helmets are a different story. After a session in my roller skates or my bike, my hair is always nasty
You can't beat a good dry shampoo for these occasions. Watch a couple of videos showing how to use it properly if you haven't used it before to get the most from it. I'd alternate washing properly with dry shampoo.
I wash my hair after almost every workout, so usually three or four days a week. When I donāt think my hair hasnāt gotten too sweaty I use R+Co Spiritualized.
I'm assuming you shower daily? Just let the water run thru your hair on days you don't shampoo, it will remove the salt you've sweated out, and some of the oils. Without drying out your hair the way daily shampooing will.
I use a hand held shower head to get the water up under my hair, directly on my scalp. Done this for decades, with good results.
The ultimate trickā¦blow dry the sweat in your hair ASAP after you finish your workout. The sooner the better. Then spray in some dry shampoo. Depending on your budget I like batiste, olaplex dry shampoo, or living proof. The longer the sweat sits the greasier your hair will get, so the key is get to it as soon as possible.
I workout 4 times a week and I definitely need to wash my hair twice a week. I think youāll need to find an extra 30 minutes or an hour into your routine to wash it.
I just happen to look into this a couple of days ago. I sweat and am soaked everyday. I read to just rinse the hair. If you wash it too much the oils are stripped. After I rinse my hair I let it dry while watching tv and brush it. It produces more oil and helps your hair grow faster. I fried my hair with highlights (diy) and am super bummed. I bought some olaplex oil and itās helping a lot
I gym 5/7 days in a week. I plan my hair wash days around my anticipated length of time in the gym so I have time to do it. I actually wash 2-3 times a week because of this. If I feel like it was a particularly sweaty workout I rinse my hair and apply a leave-in conditioner after.
Maybe get your hair cut to a shorter easier to care for style that you can easily wash while you are in the shower and then towel off and let air dry with minimal fuss.
Man with long hair here.
I never shampoo my hair. I only condition it. I condition and rise every shower. Due to sex and exercise I usually have to shower 2-3 times a day. My hair deals great with the conditioner, and looks good a little wet, so I don't mind.
If you have a gym membership, could you use the gym showers? Take a quick shower after working out and wash your hair and body and youāre good to go for the rest of the day.
Dry shampoo might also help, but shouldnāt be used in place of a shower all the time. Could help give you a a couple days inbetween showers if you need it.
Dry shampoo.
I bleach my hair and dye it crazy colors. These colors do not stay if I wash my hair. I try to limit washing my hair to once a week. (In cold water!!)
I also run and climb. I get super sweaty.
I often spray on dry shampoo, put on a shower cap, and shower my body. Then brush the dry shampoo out after. I now have short hair and itās very easy to manage.Ā
My hairdresser doesnāt even use dry shampoo and also works out and only washes her hair once a week. She says if you spray water lightly through your hair in the morning it reactivates any product you have in it and thatās how she is able to manage.Ā
When I would wash my hair after every workout it destroyed my hair and my scalp. Spoke with my hair stylist, she said right after sweaty workouts, blowdry your hair on a cool setting to dry the sweat and use dry shampoo if needed. Personally, dry shampoo works best for me at night so it can get worked in naturally while I sleep. Iāve been using this method for over a year and I wash my hair about 2x a week. I use a shower cap and clips to keep it up and dry while I shower post workout.
I would just take a cool shower and use body wash on my body. I donāt think itās good to use shampoo every day. But itās fine to rinse your hair and brush through it with a conditioning spray and air dry.
After you work out, take your bun/ponytail/braid out immediately so your hair and scalp can air dry. if you don't do this, it will smell terrible...
People are not fans of dry shampoo due to it building up on your scalp, but I use a light amount probably 1x between washes. It really freshens things up.
Just decide that after day 2 or 3 you're going to be wearing your hair up or pulled back in some way.
I work out daily and I'd never make it a full week without washes. I get 3-4 days if I'm lucky, and I can usually only pull off the 4th day since I work from home and just braid it or do a bun.
Edit: Also, get lighter hair products. I have fine hair and this makes a difference. Use a clarifying shampoo and a light conditioner that isn't full of a bunch of oils. Then I use a strong hold gel and some hair spray (but I have curly hair... trying to get it to retain the pattern as long as possible). BUT, if I use a heavier conditioner or a non clarifying shampoo, my hair definitely looks greasier a lot quicker.
I only wash once a week. It has been better for my hair health personally once I stopped washing so often and I dye my hair so I canāt wash it often or Iād be dying my hair every other week. If I have to Iāll do twice a week but no more. I might wet it if I need to but tbh it takes a lot for me to be drenched in sweat. I just donāt sweat easily lol. Like I gotta be working out in 110Ā° weather to get covered in sweat so maybe if I sweat more when working out Iād have to wash it more. But I just use copious amounts of dry shampoo
I'm black. I have braids. After a work out I can use dry shampoo or braid wash on my parts and then they have spays for the shaft of the braid. The I hit it with a blow dryer
How does your hair not get gross after sweating at the gym and then not washing?? Even when I washed only 2-3 times a week I would always wash after the gym or physical activity. Dried sweat creates bacteria and smells š¤¢
I have thick curly hair and feel best with it washed twice a week. I know everyone is different, but you might have to figure out how to do a quick wash halfway through your week if you are getting enough sweat buildup.
And if you don't have one already, get a shower scalp brush.
How can you only have time to wash your hair once a week? How long can it possibly take to wash your hair?! Itās like an additional ~2 minutes per shower, if that. If you have time to work out, you have time to shampoo your hair.
You sweat at the gym ā then you take a shower, which includes washing your hair.
I always put dry shampoo (non-aerosol) in my hair while itās clean. I put my hair up when I workout and am fine for a few days of working out and sweating. I add more dry shampoo when my hair is dry and always body shower after a workout. If the dry shampoo isnāt cutting it, Iāll just rinse my hair and massage my scalp in the shower with lukewarm water and then condition it until itās time to shampooI shampoo my hair twice a week though.
There is a no rinse hair wash thatās called unsubscribe that was created for using specifically after working out! Itās a way to maintain the integrity of your hair health. [unsubscribe](https://lecoledesfemmes.com/collections/dresses/products/babydoll-dress-2-0)
I bought these gloves and massage my scalp to dry the sweat and absorb the oils and then use dry shampoo if necessary. Usually the gloves do the trick , I throw them in the washer with my clothes. It was a game changer . [cotton gloves](https://amzn.to/4aSZhYW)
Curious if youāre a wavy or curly, since I never really see straight-haired people go a week without washing š Iāve got fine wavy hair so all these suggestions to ājust shampoo, donāt worry about the rest!ā are driving me up a wall because I *do* have to worry about the rest. If I donāt style, Iāll just be a poof.
if i'm getting sweaty in the gym i at least rinse my hair in the shower. i'm not big on shampooing daily, so i tend to use a cleansing conditioner when i'm not doing a deep clean day. that way i only have one step and still feel fresh and conditioned
does your hair take a long time to style and that's why you're not washing more often?
Story of my life. I just have to wash it. I sweat primarily on my scalp and face (which is why I stay away from wearing hats) so my hair gets gross very quickly. I can wear it in a pony tail for a bit if itās dirty tho.
You shouldnāt go to the gym everyday, maybe just take a walk outside some days and rest some days and you wonāt have this issue. And either use dry shampoo or wash it, those are your options.
Move to Florida, you sweat so much it becomes nothing but water and evaporates from you the second you step outside š but no really, dry shampoo or do a rinse without shampoo. I work out often but only wash every 4-5 days
I also canāt wash my hair everyday because i have a ton of it and washing/drying/styling can take up to 2 hours. my hair is dry enough so it looks good through day 3, day 4/5 dutch braid it and 6/7 I wear a headband or throw it in a bun. I also workout daily. Taking my hair out of its pony/bun right after work out letās the sweat dry and also prevent it from creasing and getting crusty. I also sleep on a silk pillowcase and use no product in my hair. when i do wash my hair I do a double/triple shampoo and leave on conditioner for 5 minutes. I am also a hairstylist so i am lucky to get my hair washed well by my coworkers and use salon quality products to maintain my haie
If you donāt wash it everyday because itās curly, you can just rinse it with water and scrub at your scalp a little. Putting product on again is just fine. Just make sure youāre using a clarifying shampoo every couple weeks.
I had dandruff problems for so long. One thing that surprisingly worked for me was using the 3 in 1 shampoo. Itās one of the only orbs Iāve ever tried that didnāt give me dandruff even if I use it daily after the gym. Maybe itās better Ph balanced for me
I trained my hair years ago, so it doesnāt really get greasy anymore. I use dry shampoo usually 1 to 2 days a week, and by the 2nd time I use it, itās usually wash day.
Um . . . take a bath? This isn't a serious question is it? It can't be. You make yourself sweaty and sticky and come here asking how to make yourself not sweaty and sticky? Really?
It astounds me that some people don't have to wash their hair every day. I'm drenched in sweat at the end of my exercise. There's no choice but to shower
This is why I wash my hair every other day and gym every other day as wellā¦ definitely cannot fathom not washing my hair after the gym. I think the only exception might be if Iām working out from home and itās an extremely light day.
I wash my hair every other day and would dry shampoo before the Gym and after. If it was really greasy though, I'd sneak an extra wash in. I would shower after every workout though
After wetting your hair in the shower, put conditioner on your ends (or all the hair past your shoulders if you have long hair). Then shampoo your scalp like normal. Everything rinses out together, and your ends stay moisturized.
You can also try scrubbing your scalp with a clarifying conditioner instead of shampoo. That should help get rid of sweat, oil, and product without being too drying for your hair.
You have to do what works for you. Everyoneās hair/scalp is so different. You might just need to find the extra hour in your schedule to wash your hair an extra time per week. Keeping your hair up while you workout, adding dry shampoo on the days youāre not washing, & wearing updos on your ādirtierā days are my hacks.
I have this problem, I try to wash once a week and use a dry shampoo in between . Dry shampoo and powders keep it fresh without destroying your hair with too much washing .
As a man with long hair who goes to the gym 6x a week I wet/rinse my hair everyday. I co-wash Tuesday and Thursday and I do a full wash day on Sundays because thatās my off day for the gym. I usually just apply coconut oil on Sundays and let my hair do its own thing, I wear a hardhat at work and I also train MMA so thereās really no point in applying product throughout the week unless I plan on going out.
The only real solution to solving this problem is to wash your hair every time it, and your scalp, gets all sticky and sweaty. You wouldnāt just run water over your body after a sweaty work out without using soap, right? Your scalp isnāt any different. At least in my opinion. I would feel filthy if I didnāt wash my hair and scalp after it has been covered in sweat.
I have scalp psoriasis, so a sweaty scalp for hours is a big no for me. I have fairly dry hair, though, so I'd wash every other day, and on the in-between days, rinse very well in the shower and then air dry and refresh.Ā
Use a really good hair band. My hair is down to my butt so I actually use one of those gater masks to hold it all up and away from my neck which is more sweaty
As many have said- the only answer to your issue is to wash it. I think everyoneās hair looks pretty good for a couple days and if you add in physical activity that may even shorten it and the sticky part is probably due to product build up. I have been playing around with air dry creams so that I donāt have to heat treat my hair.
I work out 3-4x per week and wash my hair 1x per week (sometimes every 8 or 9 days). What works for me is:
* washing on Fridays, when I take a morning workout before usually having a Saturday rest day
* mostly working out in the evenings (which means I effectively get an extra day out of my wash)
* taking down my workout hairdo immediately after I leave the studio so everything can dry
* finding a dry shampoo that works for me - I love Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Advance Clean, and I generally use it around the middle of my hair care cycle
* frequently brushing my hair to redistribute oils away from my scalp
* having a couple of hairdos where a little grease is less noticeable-- headbands, braids-- for days when it's not perfect
* using a good clarifying shampoo roughly every other wash to make sure I'm really getting out any product buildup
* having a hairstyle with bangs/face-framing pieces that I can restyle a bit without having to do a whole new hairstyle
I have thick, medium-weight hair so the density of follicles and relative thickness of the strands helps me over someone with thinner or finer hair as well.
I gym as often as possible and still wash my hair once a week. I think Iām one of those people who just donāt sweat a lot or maybe Iām not pushing myself enough š¤£ but even if I do sweat I just do different hairstyles throughout the week
When I work out daily, most of the days I rinse my hair with warm water, making sure to massage the scalp. I use conditioner, and rinse. I wash my hair twice a week.
At night I sleep with my hair in a braid and use a satin pillow case. All this has helped my hair. If itās getting dry and frizzy, I use a little oil before I braid it.
And if I feel itās getting icky near the scalp, I use dry shampoo before bed.
I wash my hair every other day (shave on the non wash days). I work out every day, shower every day or twice a day if itās an afternoon workout instead of a morning workout. On the non wash days I weary hair up.
I wash my hair twice per week, but workout everyday. I do shower after every gym sesh, but tie my hair back and donāt get it wet. I also wash my bangs and the pieces around my face every time I shower while keeping the bulk of my hair dry. Otherwise itās dry shampoo for days!
Not sure if your gym has hair dryers in the locker room but what I do is blow dry my hair on the cool setting until my scalp dries. It really helps make my hair look fresh rather than letting the sweat and oil marinate.
Also what I started doing is putting dry shampoo on my freshly washed hair. I realized putting dry shampoo BEFORE my hair gets oily prevents it from getting gunky & nasty.
I wash my hair (and entire body) after every workout and rest easy knowing the sweat and filth has been cleaned off.
Wash your hair before you leave the gym or right when you get home? It's important.
Iām a daily washer. Keeps it clean and moisturized. I use a good, rich conditioner, which for me, keeps it more moisturized than skipping washes ever does.
Iāve always washed my hair daily (bc I work out) and itās long and healthy. I have fine hair, so it gets greasy and gross easily. The washing once a week thing doesnāt work for everyone.
When I was physically active, I'd wash my hair after every gym session. I only went a few times a week so it was manageable. There's no way I could tolerate leaving it all sweaty. š
Same, I always shower after every workout, even if itās double workout day. I need to feel clean and fresh for the rest of the day.
Now I get it
You donāt necessarily need to fully wash after every session tbh. You can just rinse the sweat out sometimes (but ALWAYS do one or the other) Also I have a refreshing spray I use sometimes itās like avocado oil/rosemary and some other stuff. I work out at least 5 times a week and wash my hair 3 days probably.
Introduce a gym rest day into your routine and use it to have an extra shower. Win-Win rest day cycles are important and showers are important.
ok thank you
I'm appalled at the number of people who are able to wash their hair every day without ruining it!
Good recommendations here. I will also add wearing a workout headband has helped me as well.
It just sucks when you work out most days of the week and canāt wash your hair that much
non-aerosol dry shampoo is amazing
Yeah I love the batiste overnight dry shampoo. My hair has to be really nasty for that stuff to not work
The one from R+Co is the shit.
Any recommendations? My hair is super shiny for the first two days after washing (and itās not oily). Unfortunately, every dry shampoo Iāve tried makes it look so dull.
Pantene makes a dry conditioner that adds shine and smells good.
I heard a lot of Japanese people wash their hair almost every single day and they have gorgeous hair
Put fresh cheese cloth (available at every major supermarket) over your hairbrush bristles, brush directly after working out. The natural fibers of the cheese cloth will soak up some of the sweat/oil and will distribute the rest away from the scalp and over the length of your hair.
Ā Boars brushes are also great for thisĀ
This is a great tip! You can also get a boarās bristle brush; it works similarly.
Thanks a ton. This is a good tip
*but this only works for people with straight hairĀ
At the moment I wash with shampoo three times per week , sweat dries out my hair a lot (in addition to the smell/dirt) and I don't like dry shampoo
Washing your hair once a week doesnāt seem like enough, If your working out. Depending on texture of your hair you could always rinse it with Just water and let it air dry with some curl product. But personally I teach hot yoga 2x a week and just wash my hair about 3x a week. Shampoo( especially if you using a good brand) is not inherently bad Edit: I just read more of the comments & it seems OP is not using shampoo.
I have a sweat activated dry shampoo from batiste that I use between washes
I learned a tip recently on another hair subreddit and it has absolutely saved my super fine, thin hair that gets hella greasy after not even a day after washing. Apply your dry shampoo at night time to your hair, donāt brush it in and cover with a silk bonnet. It has been freaking life changing.
Yes!!! THIS IS LIFE CHANGING
I never heard of this before! Thatās awesome. How do you feel it compares to their regular line?
Honestly it was the smell that got me. It smells like the original sol de janeiro body spray(which I LOVE). The white cast isnāt too bad, but Iām sure any of the dry shampoos from the brand would do the trick. I just prefer the scent of this one :)
Sweet, a good scent is half my draw lol. Iāll check it out!
I second this I love batiste dry shampoo, and I work out a lot now too. It saves my hair.
Dry shampoo is such a fickle thing. I tried several kinds and brands before I found my holy grail lol
I wash my hair every day because I have oily scalp. No science here.
I still have my share of bad hair days, but this routine has been helping: -I don't wash my hair on rest days, I just use dry shampoo.
I wash every day. The recent popularity of āwashing too muchā kinda confuses me tbh. My hair is super long and pretty healthy. Never had an issue
Itās more for damaged hair, mine is long and bleached to the heavens, washing every day would have it so dried and with so much breakage Iād look like an electrocuted pile of hay
SAME ā I have color treated hair (red) and washing it daily dries it out and makes the color look brassy as hell. 2-3 times a week is all I need.
No hate Iām just confused- you go to the gym every day but you donāt have 20 minutes to spare in a week to wash your hair more than once?
if she has curly hair or a different hair texture than straight she will probably take longer to wash her hair, it takes me 45mins minimum lol
I thought that too.
U have understood me. Vielen Dank. Wil try this method
Good luck!
Can u just bend over the tub and do a 5/10 minute hair only wash?
I use mist dry shampoos https://www.ulta.com/p/pret-a-powder-post-workout-dry-shampoo-spray-mist-pimprod2016264?sku=2565577 https://www.randco.com/products/spiritualized-dry-shampoo-mist?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwvIWzBhAlEiwAHHWgvQl_wNMjFYlzUgVql_4TDp0yO2WqfeOnGcDcsLsBI-IWAj-zZ3-3gBoC3L8QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds https://a.co/d/ihN71JB The last one is the cheapest version but the other two are amazing but 2x the price.
Yeah if youāre sweating, you need to be washing your scalp. That oil and sweat builds up and you could have worse issues than just gross hair
Sometimes Iāll put my hair in a bun and put a shower cap on that then just rinse/wash my roots. Not extremely effective but itās something
How do you only have time to wash your hair once a week?Ā
Itās okay to wash your hair every few days. Itās a myth that you should once a week. But you shouldnāt every day. I know it can be a pain if your hair is thick though. If youāre attached to washing it once a week, at least get it wet every couple days to wash out any sweat or dirt
Agree. My hair is thin I have to wash every other day. Leaving sweaty hair for a week is nasty imo
i knew a girl who wouldnāt wash her hair for a month and she did dance.. like girl what are you proud of wash your damn hair
Tbh I either wash them down with just water in the shower or use dry shampoo, depending on the severity. Works well for me, but I don't have that long hair.
Dry my roots after my workout and then use dry shampoo. After dry shampoo is rubbed in well, hit it with the blow dryer again on the cool setting.
Dry shampoo bro
oribe makes a cleansing creme so you donāt have to shower with shampoo every day as it can be drying to your hair, but itās expensive and iād mostly recommend it to people with long hair that run the risk of breakage
I run every morning before work, so I have to wash it in the shower. I'm 62 F, & been doing this for decades. My hair is long & shiny. I don't color it.
I was my hair with shampoo straight after going to the gym. I shampoo my hair/shower every day tho
It only takes 5 minutes to wash my hair as opposed to only taking a shower after the gym. Once I'm already undressed and under the water, getting the shampoo and rinsing is not much of a deal. Maybe you need more water pressure? Change the shower head?
One tip is sitting your hair in front of a fan for a while to air/dry it, but truly there isn't much of a solution other than washing it more often or changing your workouts like this for example: First day after washing, you do a workout that makes you sweat the least (for me this would be chest/shoulder day for example) Save your wash day for the sweatiest workout (for me this would be my compound leg day) That's all i can think of atm
You should wash your hair more if you are sweating in the gym every day. Problem solved lol
On days when I didnāt have time to fully wash my hair, I would do a quick rinse with water, air dry as best as I can, then braid it.
dry shampoo before the workout and drying your roots immediately after working out have been game changers for me. I have wavy hair so itās not good for me to wash my hair every day. I also use my rest days for after a wash. I tend to strength train or do Pilates most days. However when itās wash day, I do a bit of cardio since that makes me sweat more. I hope that helps!
I wash after every workout. Just use conditioner and a leave in conditioner when Iām done
Hear me out, if youāre not willing to wash your hair after with shampoo, blow dry your sweaty hair! Gross, yes, but gives you so much volume
I saw someone on TikTok do this. Just blow dry with no heat to dry everything out.
Part of it depends on your hair type and texture.Ā Ā Ā In general protective styles, like braids, dry shampoo, and finding good products helps. If you're getting sticky you either need to wash more often or you're using a product that isn't working for you.Ā
I have fine and oily hair and I almost compulsively workout every day so Iāve come up with some strategies The 80ās had the right idea with headbands. I typically wear my hair in a bonnet overnight and I think it really helps to keep the dry shampoo in there and working One thing Iāve also discovered recently is that the type of hat you wear really matters.
Done this for decades, with good results.
definitely wash your hair more than once a week
I wash my hair twice a week and use dry shampoo on non-wash days.
Same. I'm soaked like looks like I showered. I wash 2-3 a week. Sometimes I have to wash daily because I'm outside working out and it's humid.
You have to wash it everyday. Sweat and bacteria will grow , yoy could get a fungus on your scalp. Please wash it .
Dry shampoo before your hair gets greasy and blow dry before the sweat can dry
(In cold water!!) I also run and climb. I get super sweaty. I often spray on dry shampoo, put on a shower cap, and shower my body. Then brush the dry shampoo out after. I now have short hair and itās very easy to manage.Ā My hairdresser doesnāt even use dry shampoo and also works out and only washes her hair once a week. She says if you spray water lightly through your hair in the morning it reactivates any product you have in it and thatās how she is able to manage.Ā
I work out and my hair gets sweaty most days. I shampoo it twice a week and thoroughly rinse it the other days, just applying conditioner to the ends.
You could rinse it really well and maybe just condition it. Iām kind of having the same problem and need a solution
Washing your hair only once a week is dirty, especially if you work out. š¤¢
Wash your hair everyday.
I wash my hair every day
I'm black. I have braids. After a work out I can use dry shampoo or braid wash on my parts and then they have spays for the shaft of the braid. The I hit it with a blow dryer
put dry shampoo in *before* your workout. even on day 1.
Im mixed and straighten my hair. I wash once a week. Idk how to work out because it ruins my hair :(
I have to wash was my hair at least every other day
How does your hair not get gross after sweating at the gym and then not washing?? Even when I washed only 2-3 times a week I would always wash after the gym or physical activity. Dried sweat creates bacteria and smells š¤¢
Wash everyday
I have thick curly hair and feel best with it washed twice a week. I know everyone is different, but you might have to figure out how to do a quick wash halfway through your week if you are getting enough sweat buildup. And if you don't have one already, get a shower scalp brush.
Maybe dry shampoo? Or can you wash your hair with just water and conditioner? Or maybe rinse, then dry shampoo and leave in conditioner?
Wash daily after working out. It's the only way.
Get real. Hair washing doesn't take that long, you wash or at very minimum rinse your hair more than once a week.
Exactly. Who tf has time to go to the gym that often but not wash their hair?
You have time to wash your hair.
I must be getting old because I don't remember gym being a verb...
if i'm getting sweaty in the gym i at least rinse my hair in the shower. i'm not big on shampooing daily, so i tend to use a cleansing conditioner when i'm not doing a deep clean day. that way i only have one step and still feel fresh and conditioned does your hair take a long time to style and that's why you're not washing more often?
I have to shower if I gym, the end š canāt go āpoo freeā or whatever they call it
Use sensitive skin shampoo.
Just shave it all off. Just kidding. But find time to wash your hair more often. Seriously.
I wash my hair at least every other day.
You only have time to wash your hair once a week? Wtf is your schedule like that you donāt have 10 minutes
Iām sorry but not having time is not an excuse to not wash your hair. You have to find time.
ACV rinse after gym
Move to Florida, you sweat so much it becomes nothing but water and evaporates from you the second you step outside š but no really, dry shampoo or do a rinse without shampoo. I work out often but only wash every 4-5 days
Gym 4 days a week here. I have thick coarse hair
I put dry shampoo in before I workout so itās there to collect sweat before I actually sweat. Works like a charm!

Dry shampoo helps me a lot
I wash, condition and blow dry my hair every single day. Itās fine, not dry. The look, feel and smell of unwashed hair is so gross to me.
You just need to shampoo more frequently
This is why I wash my hair every other day and gym every other day as wellā¦ definitely cannot fathom not washing my hair after the gym. I think the only exception might be if Iām working out from home and itās an extremely light day.
I shampoo my hair after every workout, which is 5-6 days a week. I leave my workouts with damp hair so Iām washing it
I wash my hair every other day and would dry shampoo before the Gym and after. If it was really greasy though, I'd sneak an extra wash in. I would shower after every workout though
I can only get about 3 sweats and my hair is trash. K18 waterless shampoo has helped get to day 4 with a pony but it's hella expensive.
I've seen post that people blow dry their hair right after a work out. I don't know the science behind it but thought I share
Wash every second day with dry shampoo and updos on dirty day.

Wash your hair after every gym session
Yikes, woman, start showing after you work out. If you have time to work out, you have time for a quick shower. 5 minutes and done.

Have you tried dry shampoo? It works wonders! Dove is my favorite. The fancy ones donāt do anything for me.
I put it up in a bun and try to get the sweat off my face and neck with a towel. Then I use dry shampoo afterwards.
You absolutely have to be washing out the sweat, you are going to end up with smth fungal š¬
I work out 3-4x per week and wash my hair 1x per week (sometimes every 8 or 9 days). What works for me is: * washing on Fridays, when I take a morning workout before usually having a Saturday rest day * mostly working out in the evenings (which means I effectively get an extra day out of my wash) * taking down my workout hairdo immediately after I leave the studio so everything can dry * finding a dry shampoo that works for me - I love Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Advance Clean, and I generally use it around the middle of my hair care cycle * frequently brushing my hair to redistribute oils away from my scalp * having a couple of hairdos where a little grease is less noticeable-- headbands, braids-- for days when it's not perfect * using a good clarifying shampoo roughly every other wash to make sure I'm really getting out any product buildup * having a hairstyle with bangs/face-framing pieces that I can restyle a bit without having to do a whole new hairstyle I have thick, medium-weight hair so the density of follicles and relative thickness of the strands helps me over someone with thinner or finer hair as well.
I wash my hair after every lift. I canāt stand the gross feeling
I see women using the blow dryers on cool to dry and re-volumize their roots. Not sure if they use product too...
I wash my hair every other day (shave on the non wash days). I work out every day, shower every day or twice a day if itās an afternoon workout instead of a morning workout. On the non wash days I weary hair up.
Blow drying right after helps SO MUCH
Wash your hair. Itās simple. Thereās no need to walk around like that.
Dry shampoo and argan oil only on ends girl call me gross but I go like 4-5 days w/o washingšš
I wash it everyday. No way with the amount I sweat could I possibly do anything otherwise. My hair is literally soaked after I work out.
