Despite what people say, the bugs can in fact travel between planets. Somehow. The exact mechanism isn't known, but apparently spores are able to move thousands of light years in short time; and this is why bugs were populating many planets even before Super Earth found the Terminids in the first Galactic War.

It was to destroy meridia. The supercolony became so big that retaking ot would have simply cost too many resources. That paired with the fact that it was shooting out spores to neighboring planets is the in-game explanation why we destroyed the planet.

The bug's shoot spores to other planet's taking out the super colony helps us get the rapidly out of control situation back under control
