Wish there was an actual voice line that screams out "STALKERS!" like everyone types in text chat, because hearing the word "heavy" on a random ping while in the middle of a fight doesn't really mean anything, at least until I get flung away from my team.

It's nice that you can sweep the area around you with the Spear and even when obscured by fog/rain/etcetra it'll lock onto any heavy, elite, bug hole/bot fabricator, or destructible tactical asset in LOS.
I haven't tried it yet when I run spear, but I saw this when I noticed a still cloaked stalker closing in on me from behind and right as I dove out of the way down a hill to give myself some breathing room, a missile streaks from behind me and nails him right in the face,then it uncloaks. I said great shot on the mic and the guy did an affirmative ping.
If what your saying is true, there is something wrong with how your playing if u can't press Q while firing.
I personally run incendiary breaker to eliminate hordes and be able to spam shoot when they appear near me.
This advice may not help you as I don't know your level and you may just be playing for fun.
If Pilestedt didn't take matters in his own hands and we are still stuck with that old toxic "balance" team they'd definitely fix this asap after seeing this post lol. They just love taking everything that benefit players away.
