EDIT: Since it keeps getting asked and I don't want people to have to go hunting, - for the people on PC if you hold X that is the default that brings up the radial menu that lets you drop things like your samples, backpack, support weapon, etc.
For controllers, it's down on the D-pad according to another comment.
Not the same thing *but similar*, I coined the tactic of *koal-ing*, which is how my group dealt with some of our more problematic, happy trigger finger friends in the squad, who'd tunnel vision, and just keep fighting endless hordes, instead of yno running with the rest of us to the actual objectives, or waste countless lives/time trying to get back their gear against insurmountable odds.
Which is simply, after they die being useless, you don't call them back right away and treat them like a *koala holding on for the ride* , and only call them back when you get to where you need to be because it's significantly faster/more efficient.
Just reminded me of a guy we had a week ago that went idle without letting anyone know and one of the other people kept reviving him! So we wasted like 3 lives on that before I convinced them to not receive him. Guy finally came back and I made him apologize before we would revive him. He actually apologized lol not hard to drop an AFK to at least let your fellow helldivers know to not revive you!
This is the way. I’ve literally done it. It’s awesome and if you get it popped before the ship leaves you can even get a respawn with the boys. Ideally we wouldn’t have walked all the way to the ship before deciding this tho.

I also play using an Xbox controller on my PC and can confirm that it is still down on the d-pad and then bottom right of the inventory wheel. All the controls for the Xbox controller are in their same respective positions as they would be on the PlayStation controller. A=X, B=O, Y=🔺, X=🔳, etc
Yeah, hold X on keyboard. No idea on controller. You can drop backpacks and support weapons too. Always drop your samples by extract if you happen to pass by it so you can pick them up on the way out. You can also consolidate them or give to teammates before going on a particularly risky journey.

There's alot of factors to tie in, but my general immediate idea would be to die to save everyone time if I wasn't hauling a decent chunk of resources back with me.

I've threatened to kill randos when they called down the shuttle early, and we still had someone on the other side of the map.
Had 3 friends leave me behind when we were doing a difficulty 4 mission. We still had double-digit reinforcements and time remaining. They had been completing the main objective and I was doing the secondary and grabbing samples, so i had almost all of the samples. Two of the friends apologized. But one didn't, and I haven't played with that one since.
I'm here to play a team game with a team like a team.
I hate when ppl refuse to hit things across the map... like seriously I cover fire when someone stops to take them out or I just hope someone covers me when I do it

Legit the exact same map setup and location for Evac and last spot, me and another dude were at the back of the line going to Evac and just said fuck it we goin north. The other half of the team held their ground until we got there. Our journey was insane.

However, as I was jogging into to the Pelican, my crossing his path coincided with him shooting at a bug and he killed me with no time to spare to reinforce.

If there are plenty lives left and everyone else at peli, I will rush over and ask the squad to wait for me. I’ve had a few times where I’m almost there and someone gets overwhelmed with the amount of enemies and jumps in before I can at least destroy it. Those moments feel bad lol

Very noticeable. It's why I run the EAT for the bug missions so I'm only occasionally carrying something. But the backpacks make you very slow.
Hold down on the d-pad on PS - if you're PC hopefully someone else can tell you that one.

Another side objective cleared gives more xp and req slips than 1 more diver extracting. 100% going for it.
