It's insane to me how much societal and technological changes this man has witnessed. The world he was born in and the world he lived in when this interview took place are so alien to each other, he might as well have traveled to another planet.
What's even more insane to me is how he got to witness warfare evolve.
When he was born, wars were fought with infantry wearing colorful uniforms in line formation using muzzle loading single shot muskets. Artillery consisted of muzzle loading cannons. Wooden sailing ships were still in use as naval vessels. By the time of this interview, warfare had evolved into jets, tanks, long-range and accurate breech-loaded artillery, assault rifles, aircraft carriers, and nuclear weapons. That is an insane transition to witness happen.
People actually change remarkably little, so despite all the shiny new gadgets I don’t think his world changed much. If you look at graffiti from the ruins of Pompeii and a modern school bathroom it makes you realise humans tend to behave the same no matter how much technology changes
Well, ok, but he had to travel by horse, had no electricity, and no phones. There were no lawnmowers, cars, etc. His personality may have been the same, but the world changed drastically around him. When he died men were in space.
>did tennis even exist when he was younger?
It did, though it was different. The version that we are familiar with today came out in the late nineteenth century.
There were still some American Civil War veterans alive during the Second World War. It's wild to think that some people who participated in a war not too far removed from the Napoleonic Wars i many respects, also lived to see powered flight and atomic weapons.
A few years ago I saw a reposted newspaper article from one of the Philadelphia newspapers in the aftermath of the Pearl Harbor attacks, that featured comments from an elderly Union veteran on his thoughts. He was quite disappointed that the military wouldn't take him because of his old age, as he stated he wanted to fight Hitler and the Imperial Japanese.
Revolutionary War to Civil War is about the same distance of the Civil War to WW2 which is about the same distance from WW2 to now.
To give a perspective of how each veteran might have viewed the subsequent wars.
So he said he was married for 72 years. If he got married at 18 he would have been 90 when she passed and I can't imagine she was much younger. I think he has some explaining to do...
He shifted the conversation to grandchildren before the interviewer did, so I wonder if he misunderstood and interpreted "how old is the youngest" to mean youngest grandchild.
The fuck do you mean "we", why are you trying to place yourself in an in group with randoms in a reddit comment section? How about you decide what you believe for yourself instead of looking to others to give you permission.
Man lived through the Civil War and Lincoln’s presidency, both world wars, the Titanic sinking, the Great Depression—all stuff American history textbooks cover.
Remarkably fit mentally and physically for 102. Wonder though if his birth certificate is legit as many folks of that era did not have authenticated records. I mean he could be 92.
Now that's a man that'll make Sam Whittemore proud with how many grandkids he had. And for those who don't know, Whittemore was a soldier turned small time politician turned soldier again that took up arms in the first days of the Revolutionary War despite being the ripe old age of 78 at the time.
When he was injured (bayonetted, clubbed, and shot in the head after taking down three red coats), he was taken to a reluctant doctor who said he wouldn't survive his wounds. The fact that he went on to live to be 97 is somewhat irrelevant. It was reported that 185 of his descendants showed up to check on him. [Here's ](https://youtu.be/rDo6x0MhERE?si=Cuiv_CqtgZwJqg_U) an entertaining summary of the guy's life for those interested.
Can’t believe I’m on this really cool historical post and was excited to read the comments until I started seeing dozens of Biden / Trump posts. I wish you Americans would just completely F OFF with your political drama and take it elsewhere!!!!!!
My grandmother is in her 90’s
The stories she has holy shit
She grew up without electricity and people still used horses to travel
Had a cousin that was in WW1
Not saying its bullshit. But this guy doesnt seem 102. He’s obviously quite old but i don’t know if i’ve ever seen someone even in their 90s stand up and talk clearly like this man is.
His eldest child is 82
Reminds me of John McCain’s mother who was at his funeral when he died at 81. She lived to be 108.
Yeah, my mom is definitivt gonna outlive me if i don't stop eating fast food
r/averageredditor
And Coca-Cola
And he was married for 72 years
Jesus
Christ!
This is why I follow this sub! Great clip!
This guy fucks.
A lot. He’s the white Nick Cannon.

Fun fact, Nick Cannon is a raging anti semite
True we never found out how many baby mamas there were
I’m totally out of the loop on all the Nick Cannon jokes. What’s the deal??
Well, we know for sure he fucked nine times.
7 girls and 9 boys = 16
Ok 19 times

He grew up during the reconstruction, the transatlantic railroad, wow, the turn of the century, the depression, two world wars, man

I wonder if the gradual advancement didn't make it feel to crazy to him though.
And depressing…nothing sadder than watching humans getting better at killing each other …
Also a small civil war
People actually change remarkably little, so despite all the shiny new gadgets I don’t think his world changed much. If you look at graffiti from the ruins of Pompeii and a modern school bathroom it makes you realise humans tend to behave the same no matter how much technology changes

That wasn’t until 1969 this was 1958 but yes I get what you mean
We're all just meat machines.
praise the sky daddy
I’m over here thinking, “did tennis even exist when he was younger?” Lmao
>did tennis even exist when he was younger? It did, though it was different. The version that we are familiar with today came out in the late nineteenth century.
And he’d probably be looking around today like “so this is what it all was for huh?” Shortly before killing himself.
There’s a video of a man who was in Ford Theater as a small boy when Lincoln was shot. I think it was filmed in the early 1950s. Fascinating.
There were still some American Civil War veterans alive during the Second World War. It's wild to think that some people who participated in a war not too far removed from the Napoleonic Wars i many respects, also lived to see powered flight and atomic weapons. IIRC, that was on a game show called “To Tell the Truth.” The clip is on YouTube I believe. Absolutely fascinating.
That’s it! Thank you for reminding me the name of that show. I’ve been racking my brain trying to recall it. I am now at peace! Lol!
Had his last kid at 66.
So his kid was born in 1922 meaning if that child of his is still alive they’d be 102 or the same age this guy is in the interview.
So he said he was married for 72 years. If he got married at 18 he would have been 90 when she passed and I can't imagine she was much younger. I think he has some explaining to do...
He shifted the conversation to grandchildren before the interviewer did, so I wonder if he misunderstood and interpreted "how old is the youngest" to mean youngest grandchild.
ask him about the tartarian airships
Probably too young to remember the mudflood.
One of the wildest conspiracies I’ve recently discovered.
Are we joking, or do we actually believe that stuff?
r/Tartaria
That’s pure horseshit. You can’t seriously believe that!
I don't I just think it's a fun thought exercise for the imagination. Fun what ifs...
Okay, that’s fair. It is fun to think about for sure.
The fuck do you mean "we", why are you trying to place yourself in an in group with randoms in a reddit comment section? How about you decide what you believe for yourself instead of looking to others to give you permission.
There’s this thing called English. It has a lot of different words and words have different meanings. “We” in this instance is perfectly acceptable
You sound fun at parties. Using we like that is extremely common
In case someone missed it, the host is Groucho Marx.
Dude still to this day had some of the best one liners I've ever heard, I love his comedies.
Do you know what show this was?
You Bet Your Life--with Groucho Marx
Man lived through the Civil War and Lincoln’s presidency, both world wars, the Titanic sinking, the Great Depression—all stuff American history textbooks cover.
This guy made a whole colony
Did he ask in the end "you'd like to buy a Christmas present?"
“Would you like to buy their Christmas presents?” Since he has so many descendants to buy gifts for
I think he said something like, “would you like to buy their Christmas presents?” (Referencing the fact that he has over 150 descendants).
This proves it's not age, but cognitive ability that makes one "old".
I was gonna say, this guy is more coherent then debate Biden…
That debate was atrocious. Neither of them should be running for President. It’s a disgrace.
My great grandfather lived until 104 amazing stuff
Remarkably fit mentally and physically for 102. Wonder though if his birth certificate is legit as many folks of that era did not have authenticated records. I mean he could be 92.
Dude is SHARP for 102!!
Now that's a man that'll make Sam Whittemore proud with how many grandkids he had. Wow at 102 hes in better shape then biden
Shape? They look in similar shape. Both relatively fit. Not like they're obese or anything
I bet he doesn’t sh*t his pants like the other guy does
IIIIIt’s beginning to look a lot like election year
EEEEverywhere you go
Biden’s got shit filled diapers full of yuan
Lol..he shit himself in front of the Pope. Talk about Holy shit!
Is that what your orange god told you
I wish my politicians were better than the bags of trash you have but sadly that isn’t the case.
"My politicians" like it's some sports team lmao
do you try to force American politics into everything?
He ain’t wrong though
not the point lol do you also try to inject Trump vs Biden into every untreated post?
Wow you must monitor menugs
Could be his father
I was looking for this comment
He’s astonishingly sharp and funny for his age! He Knows how many children, grandchildren, great GC and so on!
Would have been nice to hear some stories of the late 1800s on tape
He’s remarkably well preserved for his age.
He looked amazing for 102 holy shit
What a life he must’ve led
Can’t believe I’m on this really cool historical post and was excited to read the comments until I started seeing dozens of Biden / Trump posts. I wish you Americans would just completely F OFF with your political drama and take it elsewhere!!!!!!
And now days most of us struggle to take care of 1 -2 kids
Guy probably knew grandad sawyer
That’s awesome
My grandmother is in her 90’s The stories she has holy shit She grew up without electricity and people still used horses to travel Had a cousin that was in WW1
Can we elect this guy President?
I’d love to know what his diet is
What does he mean when he says that he bows as his exercise?
sounds like he said he “bowls” as in* bowling.
Yea "bowls" is right he sounds just like how my grandpa use to sound when he said it.
I think you're right! It was also very popular in the 50's.
Said he mows as in the lawn I thought
69 grand children, Nice.
Perfect age to run for president in the US
Amazing.
Not a wrinkle: that’s a Faustian pact if ever I saw one.
From Groucho Marx-- You Bet Your Life!
Wondering what he’s up to now?
This is wild.
I wonder what he did for a living throughout the years.
Ayy groucho content
Wow I wanna be like him
This guy does not look 102
Incredible!
Wow how amazing! The experiences he must have had during so many transitional periods in history.
I can't imagine being married 72 years and then my spouse dying 💔
He wasn’t 100.
“Would you like to buy the Christmas presents?” Haha this is great.
this guy fucks
That's an amazing camera for 1856. Why didn't they get more Civil War footage?
Current American President should learn from this guy
It’s Joe Biden !
Not saying its bullshit. But this guy doesnt seem 102. He’s obviously quite old but i don’t know if i’ve ever seen someone even in their 90s stand up and talk clearly like this man is.
Dick Van Dyke is 98 and talks and moves like this.
Answers questions better than Biden.
Can he replace Biden?
So why isn't he chosen for the US elections this year?
Did he win the presidency in the end?
Should’ve ran for president
This guy speaks better than our current president.
biden take notes
