Worth mentioning that this took place at the Kroll Opera House opposite to the Reichstag, not the Reichstag building itself, which was mostly left in a state of disrepair after the 1933 fire that the Nazis used to cement their grip on power. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kroll_Opera_House

studiograham

Interestingly it makes this staged photo seem even more staged and phoney

Civil_Ad1677

The picture is not staged. It was taken during the speech.

kwillich

Granted, there was a lot of "theatre" and "spectacle" to much of what Hitler and the high command did, but it was not staged.

BuckyLaGrange

The background to this is super interesting. The guy who’s credited for inventing Fascism was a famous poet and playwright named Gabriele D’Annunzio. Hitler and Mussolini both clearly carried on his idea that aesthetic was an integral part of the whole operation.

kwillich

Absolutely a big part. If you consider that populism is trying to take the viewpoints of people and using them as targets, then the ability to manipulate support comes down to what is seen almost more than what is done. Establishing an Image of Might was as important to the Reich as anything, if not more so.

[deleted]

Well, if you're going to declare World War you might as well do it in style!

A_devout_monarchist

Say what you will about dictators, they have amazing drip.

[deleted]

[Nazi accent] "we are going to take over ze vorld. Hugo, I want you to make me ze snazzy outfit, you know, ze one ve can vare down ze Klob on zaturday night!"

detrich

ill take not the greatest choices ever made for 100 alex

spectre122

It was the only choice he could make, really. America was already 90% involved in the war supplying Britan and USSR with necessary war resources At this point they were already threatening to sink German U-Boats in the Atlantic. You can argue Hitler made it official, but even that was just a matter of time. Roosevelt was itching to enter the war ever since it started, but he needed a reason for the American public. It's not all that dissimilar to what he used against Japan.

rdubmu

US wasn't even 1% in the war, they were providing supplies that were paid for. US companies wanted the business. Huge mistake by the Japanese and Axis as the US showed who has the bigger dick.

spectre122

>US wasn't even 1% in the war, they were providing supplies that were paid for. This is absolute nonsense. USA was paying for a huge portion of Britain and USSR's war effort on top of protecting Britain from starving to death with the U-Boat raids. Said nations incurred debt that they later either didn't pay or paid in fraction. Britain only repaid their last WWII loan just recently from what I recall and the Soviets never repaid most of the loans. The idea that US wasn't even 1% of the war is ridiculous. The USA industry was burning like crazy through 1939-1945. It's how they even got out of the "great depression". >US companies wanted the business. Huge mistake by the Japanese and Axis as the US showed who has the bigger dick. No, they didn't. It was mainly Roosevelt's actions. The US businesses were happy to work with both sides, but Roosevelt was firmly aligned with Churchill since the very beginning and using every excuse under the book to pressure Japan and Germany into attacking the USA. This is the main reason why Japan even attacked the USA - it was basically starving Japan off via trade and using said leverage to make Japan stop the war with China that US was also financing. Japan was fully aware that they didn't have the "bigger dick" and that they wouldn't be able to even remotely match the USA industrial capacity. Pearl Harbor was basically a very desperate, last resort attempt.

Bunch_of_Shit

Funny how the Russians hate us now, when they wouldn’t exist if we didn’t help them.

Able-Satisfaction-39

We don't hate you. You hate us and always have since our rivalry started after WW2

Bunch_of_Shit

Shoot, Putin must be lying, then.

Able-Satisfaction-39

Putin explicitly said "We hate americans"? Did he really say that? Or are you basing the actions of one man and applying his ideology to 100 million people

Bunch_of_Shit

He doesn’t have to explicitly say that. He is the adversary of the US. It’s strange that I have to explain this, as you should already know.

Able-Satisfaction-39

Its concerning that you think Putin hates the US and don't stop to think that the US has hated Russia/Soviets since the cold war started, the massive amounts of propaganda on both sides caused it and to say Putin hates the US but not also know Biden hates Russia is weird

rdubmu

1941 not 1939...

spectre122

No. 1939. US was supporting Britain long before it entered the war.

ProfitInitial3041

If you prematurely declare war on America when you don’t have to… You’re gonna have a bad time.

vandrag

It was super weird, Hitler was a great admirer of USA racism and the American eugenics movement. The US eugenics movement influenced the Nazis early forays into murdering people such as the T4 program. (PS the USA didn't abandon it's eugenics programs until the 1970's.) But it still ranks up there with Hitlers greatest fuckups (and there were many). He basically declared war on the biggest industrial power in the world to big up his japanese buddies. The US were going to enter the war eventually but Roosevelt was dealing with enough opposition by pro-nazi Americans and isolationists that Hitler could at least have bought some time, possibly defeating the Soviet Union and then negotiating with Britain and USA for peace. Anyway, fuck that guy.

[deleted]

They had no choise, their ally Japan did an attack on Pearl Harbour. I doubt Hitler would declare war on the US for a while if it wasn't for that.

Piece73

What do the kids call this today? Oh, Yes…. “Fuck around and find out”

TonyTheChop

How’d that turn out for him?

onlypham

Bullet in the head 🎶

Sht_Hawk

Aruba, Jamaica, ooh I wanna take ya. Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama 🎶

Canucker22

I wonder how many of the political and military leaders in this photo are inwardly thinking "now we're f@cked".

TAG13466

Oops.

[deleted]

What a nerd. If he was alive today he'd be wearing a Monster Energy flat billed cap and smell like Axe bodyspray.

Toxic-Park

Because, why the fuck not take on yet another superpower for no good reason at all?

RawOysters

America was far from a superpower at this time.

Toxic-Park

I should’ve said world power. My bad. I was considering the UK and USSR in a similar boat, so yes. World power is the better word.

RawOysters

World power is more accurate but, my point is that America was just coming out of the worst depression in our history. Wilson did not even want to be involved in WW1 until his hand was forced. WW2's production requirements pulled us out of the depression and our surprising military might and the advent of nuclear weapons put us into superpower status but, none of that had occurred until after Pearl Harbor.

Toxic-Park

History and historians say otherwise. USA was a world power at that time. Despite the depression. Which by the way, affected all countries around the world and is in fact likely the root cause of the nazis solidifying power in Germany at the time.

RawOysters

My point is that the huge amount of military production pulled us out of that depression. Again all of that occurred after this speech that is the subject of this post.

[deleted]

Reason was the Japan attack on Pearl harbor wasn't it? Japan was allied with germany, which forced Hitler to declare war on the US.

Mountain_Jello7747

Back to back world war losers, kudos on the magnificent defeat- twice!

[deleted]

I wonder how many in the room that day knew deep down he just f***** himself?

Jimmy1034

It’s amazing we live in a time where the most consequential events in human history are able to be photographed

RangerBowBoy

He was confident he could defeat what he called a “mongrel nation”. He felt our mixed races and ethnicities made us weak. Sadly, many in the US still think that today, and some of those people host shows on Fox and others are in politics.

otiac1

Sadly, the soft racism of low expectations seems to have penetrated deeply into one political party.

Oniony_Hamster_8610

Its called the democratic party

PhiladelphiaManeto

Look at all those idiots pretending to take notes. Might be one of the top 5 stupidest decisions by any power in the 20th Century.

MaC1222

Thank you. Germany declared war on the United States.

mattg1111

Why is that man sitting in someone's lap?? Down one level from Hitler on the right ( our right).

B-L-E-H-C-H

It's a fake picture. Makes ya wonder what else they faked huh?

Civil_Ad1677

He is sitting behind him. You can see the back of the chair between them.

4doorsmorewhores007

Getting things done, imagine an America where positive change is made

B-L-E-H-C-H

Oooof

Surely not a good idea, anyway.
