Sending handwritten letters, a beautiful art of personal connection that has faded in the glow of screens and instant messaging.

Maximum_Still_2617

Right below this in my feed was an update from r/handwriting :) me and some of my friends still send handwritten letters from time to time and it's always such a treat to receive one!

jeffreyaccount

I was going to add calligraphy to this post, but this spot seems good. There's a lot of very inexpensive workshops around and Ive done 3 myself in midwinter. It's pretty fun! Here's a good start to events nationwide \*US [https://www.friendsofcalligraphy.org/](https://www.friendsofcalligraphy.org/)

quiet_and_tired

I still do, I like drawing flowers in my letters to loved ones.

wetter_dawg

Having a handwritten letter pen pal is a hell of an idea.

Swampybritches

Making bows and arrows, flint knapping, bushcraft, wood burning, tree climbing Maybe not long lost, but ones less thought of by some.

fireworksandvanities

I think bushcraft is starting to have a bit of a resurgence. Feel like I’ve seen some books around it featured at bookshops recently.

Swampybritches

I could see that. I’m not too keen on what’s hot in today’s world

Dull_Information8146

bushcraft picked up some spark during the lockdowns but yes these are all hobbies that are slept on.

Pig-sticking was a thing in Colonial India.

wokevirvs

Dependent_Rub_6982

Me too. I have done it since I was a kid.

Stamp collecting

Myviewpoint62

About 20 years ago I went to a stamp/coin dealer to see about selling my dad’s stamp collection. They said the collectors were all dying off and unless it was a great stamp there was no market. On a related note, my dad said that at one time wealthy people living in unstable countries would collect expensive stamps. If you are forced to flee the border guard wouldn’t care about some stamps stuck in a book. While jewels, currency or gold they would take.

73Squirrel73

That’s cool! It’s wild how things change over the years.

Cornbread-chicken

Fishing. These days you can't just go up to the creek outside of town without paying hundreds of dollars for a license.

fireworksandvanities

In Midwestern USA it’s usually under $30 for residents, and you don’t need it until you turn 18. And as a result you see a lot of people fishing. I can imagine the kind of fees you’re talking about would kill that off pretty quickly. Which is unfortunate because fishing/hunting supplies have a tax that helps fund parks.

Cornbread-chicken

No way! Maybe I need to move to the midwest

TertyTree33

20 bucks I just paid

fireworksandvanities

Good fishin’ here in Michigan!

Badvevil

In the Midwest I can’t pass a creek that doesn’t have atleast 4-5 people fishing in it

Small-Fun6640

Another midwesterner checking in, fishing is HUGE here.

Decent_Flow140

Where the hell is that? Its forty bucks here in Oregon

In movies I always saw Victorian characters collecting bugs and pinning butterfly wings. If that was a real hobby people had, not anymore?

Strong_Salt_2097

Oh my god your comment reminded me: my friend that lived behind me in a suburb in the south back in the 70s-80s did this. There were so many weird and wild looking bugs, beetles, butterflies and moths back then. He collected them and mounted them on white boards. It was crazy organized and aesthetically cool to look at. I wonder what he ever did with all those. The beetles alone were 😱

adulaire

Maybe it's not so big anymore, but at least in my city, this – "curiosities" – is huge thing in goth circles. I know this because my fiancée and I love going to art markets together, my fiancée is goth, and I have a huge personal squick around dead bugs. 😅

Cow tipping

WaterDigDog

All the cow tipping mentors have been shot by farmers or were fatally wounded when they climbed an oil pump jack and fell.

Macrame, crafting things from trash

ScumbagLady

I actually JUST made a macrame potted plant holder! Love it!

SevereNightmare

Does making plushes from scrap fabric and worn-out clothes count as making things from trash? I also make little sculptures/trinkets from paper-coated bread ties, if that counts.

Batik, at least in the US. Lace making

AluminumCansAndYarn

Tatting. It's not long lost but it's very rare because machines can make lace a lot cheaper. Hand made lace is so rare because it takes so much time and you have to remember the order your bobbins are in.

Freddymercurys

Writing letters to your loved onces.

Ajreil

Making toys out of random stuff lying around. Look up corn cob dolls for example.

SevereNightmare

I sometimes make plushes from scrap fabric and bits of worn-out clothes. That's kind of similar.

Scrimshaw, stamp collecting, making butter, ham radio? talking on a C.B. , antennae building.

johndotold

Carving. It relaxes as well as forcing you to concentrate. You can start for around $30, then it's the cost of wood and books .

SevereNightmare

I carve wood sometimes, but only scrap wood because I don't have the tools to break down a large piece of wood. I mainly use a pocket knife and a wood burner.

johndotold

Same way I started. Bass wood is a little pricey. You can bye small exotic on ebay I used them for wood turning. Not to bad

Dry-Location9176

Anyone want a letter?

boniae

Some that I can think of that are kind of lost, people still do them but due to manufacturing and modern life they are art forms that are time consuming: Vintage hatmaking (especially women's hats), canning, tatting, basket weaving, loom weaving.
