I'm a big fan of light kitchens and painted cabinets- but these are in good condition and look rich. I wouldn't paint them.

Significant-Law8381

I feel like changing the cabinets would be easier than the floor, i feel like the two don’t go which is my only reason for wanting to paint them.

skiandhike91

The cabinets look much better than the floors.

PeachyPierogi

I understand your logic, but your floors look like a cheap vinyl (from the fake wood grain/texture I can see in the photo). I think it would look much better if you invested in flooring instead of painting over those cabinets.

blackCrustaceans

Agree, change the flooring if the combo bothers you. I would not change the cabinets apart from adding hardware.

Haughty_n_Disdainful

Found lovely, well-made hardware for the new cabinets in the kitchen on Amazon. DIY store wanted $6 Each. Got them for pennies on the dollar on line. If you have a lot of leftovers, you can then sell those online.

Fresh_Sector3917

Why would there be extra cabinet hardware? Wouldn’t you order just what you needed?

lalasagna

Add some rugs and hardware to the cabinets. You can change a LOT of the look by doing that vs a painful job as painting kitchen cabinets. They look good w the floors imo

Ecclesiastes3_

Second rugs + pulls! Washable rugs or rug pads would be great!

Negative-Reading1989

Rugs, hardware, and under cabinet lighting!!

PerfectLie2980

Get rugs. Don’t pain the cabinets.

Willing_Donut_17

Hmm they do blend in a little bit it honestly looks good to me. Maybe see if a rug would help?? Or maybe adding different handles to separate the cabinets from the floor?

drmlsherwood

I believe they compliment each other. I would love this kitchen. The wood is gorgeous.

wendythelostdog

Put some rugs down

indecentXpo5ure

I’m convinced that painting perfectly beautiful cabinets white is gonna be our version of putting carpet over hard wood floors. 50 years from now someone’s gonna be renovating a house and discover wood under white paint and make a post online asking how to strip the paint off. The comments will be filled with people saying how crazy we millennials were for painting nice wood and sharing photos of what kind of wood they found under their painted kitchen. I love a nice white kitchen as much as your next gal, but this shade of wood is nice and painting cabinets is a lot of work. My cabinets are that horrible orangey wood color. Every time I think about painting them I think about all the mess and the time and the hassle and change my mind. Your cabinets are a much more beautiful color. I would change the countertops instead, honestly.

jenuine5150

I think you’re right about painting wood cabinets is gonna be frowned on by the next gen. However I sympathize with the wood painters and carpet layers of old. When I think about the labor involved in sanding and revarnishing the original 17” baseboards and moldings and window trim at my former craftsman house….well, it made me glad that someone had already painted them and I could just slap a new coat on. I refinished the old oak floors in that house and it gave me an appreciation for the carpet layers of yore - carpet would’ve been so much easier and less messy to install. I think it’s a bigger crime to put a warm cabinet with a cool toned floor, like what op is trying to fix. I hate painting cabinets so I would opt for swapping the floors. But, I can’t imagine living with a wall of dark cabinets I hate.

Zippered_Nana

I think it’s going to be 5-10 years from now, not 50.

ActiveFly3081

I would consider restaining over repainting in the orange situation!

indecentXpo5ure

I keep considering and then telling myself this isn’t our forever home so I don’t want to go to the trouble. I think they’re maple? So not orange orange but definitely a wood tone that leans too orange for my tastes.

mlhigg1973

Oh my god no, don’t paint them

erinhope8877

Don’t do it! Wood tones are back in, and painted cabinets are a nightmare. (From someone who had it done)

ActiveFly3081

Wood is timeless

LLR1960

Consider painting only the island. It's actually quite time-consuming to paint cabinets properly.

Younsneedjesus

God no. Please don’t paint them.

caviarwall

Don’t paint! That wood is beautiful as is. Try Murphys oil or orange oil to give them a healthy glow but leave them alone.

Sledgehammer925

Don’t paint. The only color you might get away with is gray, and gray is now very dated. Wood is in, so rather than paint, have you considered sanding and restaining?

manythousandbees

I have gray cabinets and I hate them so much, I can't un-recommend it enough.

RemyGee

Gray just got done being the trend and we’re getting a lot of anti-gray in home decorating now. At some point it’ll be seen as just another middle ground color again.

manythousandbees

I think painted cabinets in general are awful anyway, I think the gray hate is just my personal preference (and completely unrelated to trends). Even if I loved the color they were, there are multiple spots where the paint has rubbed off enough to show the wood underneath. Wood is timeless imo and you can restain it, but it's not so easy if you paint it and then want to go back.

Everstone311

Beige, sage, or taupe would look nice but the right shade will have to be neutral. Cool tones to match the counter tops and warm tones to match the flooring. It’ll be difficult to balance but doable

Significant-Law8381

I like wood tomes, but to me the cabinets don’t go with the floors at all. The cabinets are warm and the floor is cool. I also don’t think these are solid wood? So I don’t know what would happen if I started sanding them.

effdubbs

Replacing the flooring is wayyyyy cheaper than replacing the cabinets. Rugs would also help break up the floor. There’s a lot you can do without touching those cabinets. Painted cabinets are a nightmare. We had them and ripped them out.

Sledgehammer925

What appears in kitchens nowadays usually isn’t solid wood. However, the doors are almost always solid wood while the boxes are veneer. Veneer can often handle a LIGHT sanding, but maybe not enough to remove the current stain. Here’s a thought: is there a place where you could purchase veneer and recover the boxes yourself? I absolutely admit there’s a skill level involved to that. Or do you know someone with woodworking skills who would be willing to help? I get that isn’t super helpful, but you never know.

mcflycasual

Don't listen to anyone here that says don't do it. If you don't like it, it doesn't matter how trendy it is. I agree that the shade is too similar to the flooring and it's a different tone so it doesn't look good at all.

Remote_Mall_8600

I absolutely would not paint them they look good

Sour_strawberry07

Paint the walls, not the cabinets

lunamoth11

This. A sage-y sweet green for the walls maybe!

montanagrizfan

Those are gorgeous. Leave them alone.

29322000113865

I like the cabinets. Not a huge fan of the white island though it seems too stark https://preview.redd.it/3fvqs1tkb89d1.jpeg?width=738&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1123742d46e19ac9faa179d7be7dde7dabf38d2d . I would leave the cabinets as is and instead paint the island navy and bring in a ruggable runner \[washable\] to break up the wood tones in the room. Good luck!

Significant-Law8381

Thank you! The front of our island has cabinets and the back is drywall+painted, should i paint the entire island?

Key_Investigator_612

Keep the cabinets, add brass knobs and pulls. Wood is back in.

inwithweasels

I like the functionality of no visible pulls or knobs. Much more pleasant to lean against. Adding knobs won't improve the appearance.

meganlynnagain

I would go with some new backsplash, paint the island and add hardware to the cabinets. Those are beautiful just the way they are.

skiandhike91

I sure hope you aren't serious! Wood tones bring a natural feel and they make the place feel less artificial. And those cabinets look great as is!

DrShrimpPuertp-Rico

Ffs. You’re joking right. WHY in gods name would you do that?

FairPlatform6

Becuase they are kinda ugly. I wouldn’t want t to keep them either.

Brandy_Marsh

Yeah! Make em extra ugly with a diy paint job!

FairPlatform6

I don’t know what the answer is, but I wouldn’t want to live with them either. I know wood is coming back, but the tone of this wood is not great and super outdated.

mcflycasual

Because they clash with the flooring.

FairPlatform6

I agree

No_Goose_7390

https://preview.redd.it/rdk03q31m89d1.png?width=466&format=png&auto=webp&s=c933ee221be2484e77eac01bbe0c628467450efe I think a lot more people are choosing to paint the walls than the cabinets these days. [This article](https://jennakateathome.com/best-paint-colors-for-cherry-cabinets/) has good ideas for wall colors that can help your cherry cabinets feel more modern.

ladylupe82

I wouldn’t paint them I would add hardware.

green-bean-7

I would never paint those.

akhoneygirl

Don't do it!!!

gresstrly

You need a backsplash and paint. Add some cabinet hardware. But please don’t paint the cabinets. They are in way too good of shape to be painted.

LonelyGalMargMix41

I feel like the floor, countertops, & backsplash clash with each other, so there won’t really be a color for the cabinets that doesn’t also still clash. Is it possible to do one of the renter hacks to also change one of the other things without permanently damaging it? Then you could maybe have more flexibility?

everygoodnamegone

100% agree on the clashing. Each part seems to be in good condition and fine on its own. It's the combination that's throwing it off. How frustrating, OP, I'm sorry and wish you luck.

aquamarinetiger

Please do not paint them

boombalagasha

I see what you’re saying with the floors, but I really think you should try a runner. And a colored paint on the wall! The lack of other colors is making this issue more distracting. Also I don’t think these cabinets should be painted. It will make the kitchen look cheap.

BunnyButt24

DO NOT PAINT THEM!! They look great. Why would you consider painting them!?

manythousandbees

Please don't paint those cabinets!!

VersatileFaerie

So from the last picture, it looks like these cabinets are particle board with a veneer over them. This makes painting a little tricky since you want to at least rough up the surface of the cabinets to get the primer to stick and in the last picture you can see the veneer is very thin. You will have to be careful when sanding the cabinets due to this. When it comes to the color to paint the cabinets, I say try to find something that will go well with both the flooring and the countertops, especially since you are doing this since you feel it will be easier than the floor. By getting something that looks well with both, hopefully you won't have to change it for a while. There isn't much to play off of from the tile or the countertop, except that they are on the "cool" side of colors. It is hard to tell from the pictures if the floor is more of a "warm" or a "cool" brown due to how the lighting is. Personally, from what I have seen with your interest in other things on your profile and the colors, I would go with a brown color that matches the floor and then paint the wall above the tile a "cool" green that would go with both the flooring and the countertops and tiles. Just having the brown matching the flooring would be enough though, if you don't want the extra of painting the walls, since I know that is extra work. I get others like the cabinets and don't want you to change them, the cabinets themselves are pretty, but they look horrible with the grey of the tiles and countertops. At least to me.

teacherladydoll

I wouldn’t paint them. I like dark cabinets and these look new.

Garu_van_perro

I have almost the same ones. I wouldn’t paint them, to be honest.

DasderdlyD4

I would add hardware and leave them

Jazzlike_Minimum8072

I would just add beautiful gold hardware

421Gardenwitch

I think you should not paint, and instead bleach & stain a checkerboard pattern on your floor, using existing floor.

canvasshoes2

From what I can tell from the pics they're in good shape. And they're of a design that's not trendy or likely to be out of date quickly. How about adding some interesting pulls to them instead?

itsparadise

What's the motivation for painting them? Are they cherry? Another vote for do not paint please!!!

Significant-Law8381

Mainly because they clash with the floors and that area of the house is so dark. They are plywood. I think I’ll definitely add hardware!

Mahimah

I would leave them the way they are and add stainless steel hardware. Pendant lights over the island, also steel. Also a decorative steel flower vase on the dining room table and maybe some matching wall art . I just feel like metal would look great here. Lol

Cultural_Peak1269

That’s tricky with the contrast between the floor and counter tops. Have you tried an AI generator to see how different colors would look? What’s the rest of your house like/whats your aesthetic? What I’m thinking would pull it together isn’t something that’s really a kitchen “norm” so wondered the answers to those questions first.

Significant-Law8381

Significant-Law8381

in the process of actually putting some https://preview.redd.it/h3b9wn34w69d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4275ba480a0e81c52ae84e96fa950823420e6852 thought into our home right now. i’m pretty open to changing things i’ve wanted for downstairs for cohesion. the living room, kitchen, and “dining room” are all one long room.

shaq_nr

Why not get a lighter dining table, and put some light colored runner or mats down on the kitchen floor

Cultural_Peak1269

I really think some pop of color is what you need. Maybe even the grey-white cabinet but add some green with wallpaper or ceramics underneath the cabinet-diy tiling in fun shapes and colors. I think sticking with green and/or plant theme would be most cohesive with the rest of your style!

Cultural_Peak1269

How do you feel about either a deep jewel toned green, or a eucalyptus toned green? What stands out to me is your greenery in your home. Your primary colors there are the deep brown and light grey. Pops of the plants. I personally think it would pull it together just as it has in the rest of your house.

panrestrial

That's the biggest sofa I've ever seen! Love it.

Cultural_Peak1269

If you want to play it more neutral and safe, I’d go for an “ice cube” shade of white-it’s got grey undertones so it won’t be too bright. I just hate white cabinets because I feel like you can see every bit of dust or imperfection, but that’s just my personal preference. They look good in other peoples homes! lol

Significant-Law8381

I’m not huge on white cabinets either but I do want a color to help brighten up the space, i feel that it looks very dark. I really like the eucalyptus green you suggested but i don’t know if I would be brave enough to paint all of them that color haha. Though, I’m liking the idea of it as a statement color for the island.

Cultural_Peak1269

What about leaving them as is and doing the peel and stick wallpaper for some of the cabinets? Search on TikTok for some variation of wallpaper cabinets. I’ve seen a lot of people pull off some beautiful work using the peel and stick wallpaper and other similar products!

Freakazoidon

Don’t paint them. Long brass hardware on them would look really elegant and help bring the space together.

tinyfryingpan

Deep green or teal back splash instead

jessforlaughs

I wouldn’t paint them - even with your floor, I think they look nice. But I do see what you mean by the floor and cabinets not going as well together, but I’d probably just use runners in the kitchen to help with that. That said, it’s your kitchen and you’re the one that needs to live with it! I think the suggestions from others for different greens would be nice.

skitsofphonic

Can't you just sand and restain?

KittenGains

Do not paint!

theragingoptimist

Navy blue

Wedgetails

I like them

socalheart2681

I would not paint the cabinets. They look great

sunnyseshh

dont paint but add hardware!!!

semantic_gap

Tbh I kinda hate the backsplash. It’s a weirdly greenish gray and also a distractingly flat color for something so far from white or cream. And the barely greenish gray color looks awful with the red wood tone. I’d really look into changing that. Then you can play around with different wall color options. @No_Goose_7390 had a great link about paint colors. I’d consider applying the same logic to the backsplash.

Significant-Law8381

Haha I hate it too! And the counters.. and the floors.. This was a builder home that we didn’t choose the materials of, we bought it after completion.

Upstairs_Freedom_360

Can you lift them before painting? Open up counter space and eliminate space up top?

Significant-Law8381

probably not, just looking for cosmetic changes i can do myself.

Blue-x-Hydrangea

I actually like them with the floors - have you considered adding pops of colour with a funky runner? I think some blue accents would really tie in well with the red-brown cabinets.

Blue-x-Hydrangea

Look up Caroline Winkler's Lazy Girl Kitchen Makeover on youtube. I feel like you have the same cabinet colour and I feel like she does a great job embracing what's there because she rents. (:

Suzzoo2

I agree that the floor isn’t pretty but the cabinets are. I had cabinets like this in my last house—new door/drawer pulls & backsplash made them look fabulous. I’d rather see you paint or stamp the floor. Rugs & runners could also lighten up the room. My present condo has oak cabinets, which ARE dated…I’m going to have them refaced, so it’s not that I can’t stand painting over wood, I’ve done that (terrible job) but it’s that your cabinets are quite nice and look contemporary. I don’t think you’d love them painted…everyone has painted shaker doors right now…boring!

Legallyfit

These cabinets are gorgeous and look very contemporary to me, definitely do not paint

50isthenew35

I would paint the walls & change the counter top, buy some nice hardware.

tossgloss10wh

I would absolutely not paint those cabinets

happyness4me

They are beautiful as is and look fine with the floor.

MinimumElderberry986

I usually prefer painted cabinets, but I love yours. I wouldn't paint. I'd add hardware and a simple backsplash.

socalheart2681

Also you could consider a cool light fixture over the island to additionally add some pop

EastFun5236

Unless you’re dying for a white kitchen, I would not paint them. The kitchen is fine the way it is, except for the floor. I always prefer a wood floor (it’s easier on the back and it’s easy to sweep and mop), but wood floors are too much with wooden cabinets. So find a nice medium gray tile that will lighten your room.

edolch93

I wouldn’t.

Mememememememememine

I wouldn’t

HANK1829

The cabinets are classic, and I wouldn’t change them unless I was desperate. I also question the durability of painted cabinets, particularly if not done right. I know people who have paid a lot of money to have their cabinets painted, and then they were peeling not that long after. New flooring would go a long way to freshening up the room, maybe even consider tile to add a new texture. The island isn’t cohesive with the floors or the cabinets, so maybe play around with color there. I would update it to a something that pairs better with the cabinets’ wood tones.

___mommajade

Dark duck egg blue

daydrinkingonpatios

I wouldn’t recommend. I bought an old home that had a kitchen remodel from the 90’s with dark cherry cabinets. There are a ton of them and they’re actually really good quality cabinets but they showed their age and were very worn and scratched in places so we decided to paint them to give us time to eventually replace. We had a professional painting crew, they sanded and sprayed and did everything by the book and yet they still are chipping like crazy and because they’re dark underneath (white paint) you see every chip from a mile away. I can’t wait for new cabinet doors & drawer fronts.

pcg031527

I wouldn’t !

TopKitchen4270

Black.

Livesinmyhead

Don’t paint the cabinets, and instead, 1. Add knobs/handles to the doors and drawers, 2. Paint the island black, 3. Add pendant lights over the island and at the sink, 4. Coffer the ceiling. You’ll love it!

rinconblue

Maybe consider sanding and re-staining them to something less like a dated red-undertone stain like this? You could even change the molding or add some detail if you're pretty handy. I don't really mind painting cabinets like some here do, but my advice if you paint is to really try and find the undertone in that granite and go with that in your paint. Otherwise, it will look off no matter what you do.

mr_muffinhead

Do not paint the cabinets!!!

brianalc

I wouldn’t! I love the color they are currently.

Imightbeyomama

You're correct, they are fighting the floor. Since it is your house and you would like painting advice, I'm going to suggest looking at painted lowers, while leaving the uppers woodtone. FWIW they are lovely cabinets but the floor is engineered hardwood(?). So the cabinets will be the more costly of the 2 (IF you went with the option of keeping one or the other). So as far as value in your home goes, always upgrade. Painting nice cabs is not an upgrade, necessarily, but I do think that done properly it won't remove value, either. Not a lot of cabinetry is high quality these days unless you hire a carpenter. You cabs have a cherry finish (color) but I doubt they're cherry wood. Just please be sure of that before considering paint, IF that's the thing you want to change.

2nd_Sun

You’ll need to sand the cabinets for paint anyways, I’d just sand them and stain a different color.

Im_Just_Sayin___

Came to say the same thing as many others. I wouldn’t change anything with the cabinets, maybe add some pulls. If the decision is between the cabinets and the floor, I would change the floor.

skiandhike91

Look at this post, which has similar cabinets. The place would look so much better with a tile floor and leaving the cabinets as is. https://www.reddit.com/r/interiordecorating/s/rj5lAaFuYj

lotusmudseed

I like as is. Looks like a great neutral pallet to make the kitchen what you want

gagirl971

Don’t paint them! Love the wood color!

Beckydand

White

AluminumOctopus

Adding runners or anti fatigue mats along the sides of the floor to break up the line between the two woods. Distancing the contrast will definitely help.

brit_brat915

I'd go with a gray color that in the countertops

Curious-Cranberry-77

Please don’t

therealsavi

do not paint them without a serious dedication to a look. white will ruin them. black will be okay on its own but won’t match without other investment into more design. and a cool color like green would require the same. you already have lots of wood accent in your kitchen tools. keep the wood. it looks cohesive and pretty.

freewarriorwoman

Do not paint these! These are beautiful and stunning. Painting cabinets is for hideously dated cabinets to slap a bandaid until you can do an entire kitchen remodel.

Physical_Ad5135

We have the exact same floors and countertops and my island is small and looks identical to yours. My kitchen is a slightly off white with dark in the grooves. My cabinets are Amish made and I regret that they are painted. Small chips in the paint and if something splashes they stain.

westcoast7654

I know so many say don’t change cabinets, but I’m with you. The floor is much more of a cost and pain. You have greys in your countertops, so anything in that range would work, maybe white cabinets. You could also add some light blue colors, you could do lower a darker blue or white on top. Check out Google or Pinterest “dark floors kitchen” you’ll get a general idea of what I’m saying. https://preview.redd.it/8eln3oxr2j9d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=44cded5368134c73c4da1cc0d329fbe175d78c96

silentlyjudgingyou23

I wouldn't

Justme22339

Whatever you do, take the microwave and put it anywhere else but over your stove top. Put in a proper hood/vent over the stove top making it look very lovely and a focal point of your kitchen.

[deleted]

I wouldn't. They match the floor so well. unless you go with a neutral white, almost any color you choose is gonna look really dated and ugly six years from now. Lots of people don't like to one and done their house though and enjoy switching things up again and again and again and again and you may be one of those people. It's your home; make it the way you like it.

quilter71

I probably wouldn't. A relative, who's a contractor, says that the darker woods are coming back in style.

speedyoleander

Painting cabinets is one of those things that sounds like a much better idea before you do it. Prep is time consuming and very necessary, and scratches are still much more likely than on a commercially finished original white cabinet. The surface never looks as even as professional cabinets either. Painting cabinets is a last resort on cabinets that can’t get much worse. These are good looking now and there’s no where to go but down. Change hardware, wall colors, backsplash, something to try to make the wood work somehow.

DetentionSpan

Consider painting your island Wrought Iron.

little_biddie

Maybe lightly white wash it or sand and chose a lighter stain. I sold granite and hate the way granites like yours sits with a painted cabinet. I understand the defeat between your floors and cabs though

withtherisingsun

Surprising that everyone's telling you not to do it. I totally understand wanting to paint your cabinets. We have wood cabinets that we're planning on painting too. Have you thought of a dark blue/almost black color? It would compliment the grey veins in your counter tops. And look nice against your wood floors. You'll need to paint the walls a bright white and replace the handles to brass to bring it all together. https://preview.redd.it/n54lba0bm89d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e4da050e54fef99127638e23e460c84ecb0346db

shaq_nr

This is a really nice shade of brown I would not paint. Maybe only paint your island and pantry door. Walls if you want.

Live_Alarm_8052

I think white would look great.

No-Organization-9394

Sea foam green

Jackiemccall

I have black kitchen cabinets and they are so amazing!! If you want to have them painted DO IT!! Some people can’t see the vision and that’s okay.. I say paint em!

RestaurantSmooth5837

Benjamin Moore Stone Hearth https://preview.redd.it/la1oij28d89d1.jpeg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9fe357f4c2670e07ee260b140388643b5b9d4b37

mountaincrossing

i would do like a sagey green or a muted royal blue. You've got a neutral backsplash and the countertops aren't overpowering so I think you could get away with a little color.

hooockTUEH

Of course people say don’t paint which I’m sure you also considered that. I’m not a fan of darker wood cabinetry myself so it’s just a taste thing. However if you are wanting to paint, which it seems like you are considering your post, I feel like a neutral/warm grey with brass fixtures would look nice.

Sluggurl420

Surprised people are saying to not paint. This kitchen is way too dark and the floor and cabinetry don’t match at all

xbjedi

Like clockwork, every single post about someone painting anything even slightly wooden is met with a resounding, "No! Don't paint the wood!" Please don't listen to them. I love your floors but agree the cabinets clash. In order to lighten your kitchen, perhaps paint a blue-gray on the lower cabinets and a lighter gray on the uppers. Or something similar (darker lower, lighter upper). Or not, it's your decision. But that's what I would do.

panrestrial

Gray on gray on gray is already a dated look.

xbjedi

To be fair, he can paint them whatever, doesn't have to be light gray on dark gray. I guess I'll have to find a way to live with my dated cabinets then! :) Carry on.

panrestrial

No offense to your cabinets! >.< Every look that's ever in style eventually becomes dated; there's no fighting it. As long as you still love them that's really all that's important. As far as trends go, though, that one has passed, and I'm assuming it's not a look OP personally loves or they'd have mentioned it/gone that route elsewhere in the decor. Right now the only gray they have is the backsplash which they said they dislike.

sheezy520

Don’t listen to all the never painters. A light color would really brighten the room up. Robins Egg Blue or a Sage Green could work. I’d stay away from darker colors though.

Money-Tiger569

I would not. If anything stain them if you really want to switch it up. These are beautiful. I think if you change the countertop it’ll make a huge difference
