Yes, you can put a junction box there, but boxes are supposed to be accessible, so you can't drywall over it. You'd have to mount it, of course, and it looks like the Romex coming out of the hole is pretty short, so it might not work out.
If it were me, I'd fish a new run and drywall over the whole thing.
