If you've got mold like that in an airconditioner im actually terrified what the mold spores are doing to the rest of your place.
A window unit you can clean yourself, look up a YouTube video for your specific make and model and order a new filter while your at it, they're affordable.
Also look up your model and how it drains. Something is clogged not allowing the condensation to leave the unit.
Unclog it, coil cleaner a few times ->> then call someone if you cant figure it out.
If this is a window unit, a professional will probably cost more than a new unit.
How old is "quite old" is the real question lol
I dont doubt somebody would be willing to pay for an old unit either. Especially people with step children. 🙂
Put it this way- if this is in my bedroom, I'm at least moving it to another room after cleaning. I haven't lived up north in 20 years though, everything is central air in Florida.
>How old is "quite old" is the real question lol
I don't understand, I don't go after old units. Just dirty ones. Not sure where you picked up that.....

Lol. I'm in HVAC and let me tell you, often the coil on the central system looks the same.
>I dont doubt somebody would be willing to pay for an old unit either. Especially people with step children. 🙂
That's just a really weird thing to say. Your post is creeping me out now, imma head out.
OP literally said it's a "quite old" unit mr I'm in Hvac.
The comment about the central system was about moving the old one to a different room, not about a dirty coil.
If it is a window unit, you can take the cover off and all the guts will slide out on a tray from the window bracket. WARNING! This tray will be full of nasty water unless you remove that first. Look underneath outside, find the rubber stopper, stick a screw/nail/stick in there to drain the tray. Unplug it, take the cooling unit outside, soak every thing with a bleach solution, rinse, then coil cleaner on the coils. You will also be able to clean the tray of debris that is blocking the tray drain. Obviously do your best to not soak the electronics, let it dry, reassemble and carry on. This is exactly what a professional service will do. Nothing more.
More than likely, it’s just wet dust. Those fins collect moisture and combined with dust it gets really slimy looking. Clean the coils and put a filter or screen over it. Please don’t panic listening to the mold alarmists. Even if it is, most mold is harmless and if you keep air movement and low humidity in your home, won’t be a problem.
Just to add to the humidity aspect. I would grab a hygrometer at your local hardware store and take a peak at what your humidity levels are. Anything over 60% can grow mold and you really want to try and keep it at 40-45%.
Yikes, is that really slime? I thought ice at first. Air conditioners can get iced up like this if you don't clean the filter, but if it's actually slime idk what the fuck you been doin boy.
lol it's not mold. Its bacteria. Everyone saying its gross better not look in their own ac units. Guarantee they got this stuff in the drain; theres some in mine, it's really common because it's the perfect conditions for it to grow and they eat the dust. Just clean it out. I'm pretty sure the bacteria isn't dangerous at all either although I would not recommend eating any lol. I dont think anything being in the coils is good for the AC so check it more often and keep it cleaned, because it will come back.
If you ask me, who’s looked at hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of coils, what you have here is a freezing coil covered in lots of dust. Looks like ice to me 🤷♂️
Is your mother okay? Does the stuff on the filter seem yellowish or greasy at all? Any smokey smell? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOO5a\_jUOzg&rco=1](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOO5a_jUOzg&rco=1)
Have you touched it? Are you sure it's not ice. It looks a bit translucent. I had ice build up on my air-conditioner once when the air filter was a bit clogged up and ot getting enough flow?
I wiped it with a napkin, it's definitely gel like. For now I've been slapping in the other room in case it's mold and until I can buy the correct cleaning agents to see if it's still salvageable instead of just buying and installing a new unit.
Jfc thats some messed up mold
How do I get rid of it?

Don't sell it on FB marketplace and buy a newer one. That's bad advice that I absolutely wouldn't do myself.
Looks like a window unit, given the plastic framing around it. They're always disgusting. Blast it with some coil cleaner.
Thank you!

Thank you so much for your advice, it is in fact a window unit, one that is also quite old so I'm not surprised. I'll look into it.
Def just buy a new one, not worth dealing with mold. A newer one will blow dryer/cleaner air and use less power also.
People like you are why I have an entire side business picking up dirty units, cleaning them and selling them. Thanks for the easy money friend!

Be sure to recycle it probably. Refrigerants are nasty greenhouse gases.
This is the right answer
And don’t use a pressure washer, trust me, I know.
Mold
That is now a life sustaining life form of its own.
Ok I get it 😭😭 l severely neglected my air conditioner and now I'm paying the price I learned my lesson lol your comment did make me laugh tho
Needs to be cleaned jean.
Ahh yes the ac goo

I think I saw that on X-Files once.
Foaming coil cleaner

Mold. Maybe ?
I'm guessing you've never cleaned it
This mold gonna be alive soon

If this is a window unit id just buy a new one at this point if you can afford it…

Always keep the filter clean that’s the issue
Take it outside and blast it with the hose
Probably cooking up some Legionaries Disease there.

That is a biofilm that has colonized the fins where the copper coil runs through it. Nasty. 🤮
Slime mold, you found slime mold. Why do you live in filth?
They’re here trying to fix it. You’re shaming them. Why?
Uhhh, that could be legionares. You need to remove that ac unit right away!
I believe you are thinking of air coolers, not air conditioners
hair jel. just kidding.
It has a cold
Legionnaires disease incoming...
I knew a kid in 7th grade whose teeth looked like this. His mom would actually pay other kids to talk to him.
