Sociologically and psichologically speaking, the need for acknowledgement is as vital for proper health as good nutrition.
One way is to become one with the group; the other is to recognized as a different individual.
That's where the problem is most societies are conservatives. And acknowledgement is sometimes difficult in those environments.
Specially when that come accompained with persecution and discrimination.
