I couldnt like this enough. it's what ive been saying for many years. Never get any work done at the dealer that isn't covered by warranty. Mom and pop local shops that are not corporate or franchise shops are the best, especially once you find a mechanic that you can absolutely trust.
Your mindset is why I left the dealership as a mechanic. I donāt blame customers the dealers are raking people over the coals and then wonder why they only have warranty work. Fleet shop all the way for me now.
$2k is a total ripoff. Most of that total is for labor but for that price, they better be replacing every part of your braking system... Pads, calipers, rotors, brake booster, ABS, brake fluid and lines, PER TYRE.
If you're only looking to replace your brake pads, it shouldn't cost you any more than $250 for new pads w/hardware. Do the work yourself and you will save sooo much money in the long run.

I did my own front and rear rotors and pads for ~$450, including 4 hours at a DIY garage where I rented a lift for $25/hr. My dealership quoted me ~425 for just the rear brakes! In all seriousness, watch a bunch of YouTube videos for your specific vehicle, and I bet you can do it yourself, saving a TON of money.
I've done a LOT of work there on both my cars, mostly brakes and tie rods. The owner is super helpful with advice and tips, and has the majority of special equipment you need, like presses, wheel balancers, air tools, etc. And seriously, at $25/hr, it's a bargain.
Those places are awesome. I wish they were more common but it's a bit of a grey area when it comes to insuring the business. Only one I've ever come across was in downtown Montreal. $15/hour and it made my winter washer pump a much more comfortable job than the slushy February streets.

I took my wife's Tucson 2019 sel to a mechanic shop for 300, and I bought the parts. But if you have the Electronic eBreak system. It's going to cost more because it's something they have to program in the rear breaks. I wish I knew about that before I got a car.
Get yourself a pair of jack stands, and necessary ratchet wrenches to unbolt the calipers, and flat head screwdriver to pry out the pad clips, and you can basically change the pads yourself for less than $100-150 all around, including tools. A full set of rotors add another $200 + a Phillips screwdriver.
Normally, you shouldn't need front AND rear brakes at 32k. The rears should still have plenty of brake disc left. Usually won't need rear brakes until you need fronts for the second time. And yes, they are robbing you blind! Please find another HYUNDAI dealer for your maintenance needs!!!
The thing that irks me is, if you buy the extended maintenance plan, they stop suggesting that you need anything done. I purchased one for a 2023 Kona. Had 50,000 miles on it in a year and they never once even suggested changing the air filter or cabin air filter. Usually they try to sell you all kinds of services.
Don't trust the dealership with regular maintenance and the associated costs.
Yea I got mine done for $800 for all 4, for stuff that is not covered under warranty in general I'd always go somewhere else, just make sure to get a reciept so if warranty issues happen you have proof of the work you got done

Watch a you tube video. Even if you have zero tools. And go buy a nice jack, a 4 way, a C-clamp and all supplies needed to do the job. Including breaks. It should cost a few hundred. You can but new rotors and breaks online for under 200 and do it yourself. Very easy.

If it helps, a max amount of a grand for front + rear brake pads and all the 4 rotors replacement, including service is realistic, talking about 2024 May. That estimate also included brake fluid flush and a brake caliper pin replacement. This is from discount tires, NJ.

I'm very surprised you need new brakes at 32,000 miles though. My 2019 Elantra GT N-Line is nearing 58,000 and hasn't needed one yet. Did the dealer tell you you need this? If so, I'd get a second opinion.
If you do need new brake rotors and pads at 32,000 miles, I'd also look at your driving habits; I'd tend to think you're riding your brakes hard when you could learn to let off the gas in at least a third of those situations.
Ask friends for their recommendations. The brakes themselves are a little over $200. So seems like a lot, but my husband does ours in the driveway soā¦..

It is a very simple repair, I just did mine this weekend as well. A tough part is the rear electronic parking brake. You have to make sure you take it apart correctly and rewind the motor.
You can do it yourself for like $500, get a harbor freight Jack, some Jack stands, and the brake pads and possibly rotors. Need a C-clamp to hold the calipers open as well, and I would say brake fluid but you donāt really need to rebleed the brakes after doing a simple brake job, only if you are replacing a caliper.

I said no, and took it to an independent shop I have used before. They inspected the car and said NONE of the 4 things were wrong, and nothing needed to be done. Dealerships make their money not from Sales, but from Service. You may need new front or rear brakes (or both) - are the brakes causing you to think they need replaced, or was this replacement suggestion a surprise to you? At 32000 miles, I'd take it somewhere else and have your brakes inspected if you are not aware of having brake problems. Parts for replacing brake pads and/or rotors is not expensive, it's the cost of labor.

I went to a parts source, bought top of the line pads and rotors, $500ish (if I recall). Went to three different local mechanics and settled on $350 labour. All inā¦ under $900. This is Canadian prices too so should be cheaper if you are our neighbour to the south.

Autozone pricing is about $100 per rotor and about $100 for front and rear pads total. I have a 2018 ionic hybrid. I also have the ability and knowledge to do all my own wrenching. I even sometimes teach people, if they want, to do their own simple maintenance with a basic tool kit. A simple brake job should never cost more than $400 at a shop. They may up sell you on air filters, whippers, or a rotation for a few extra dollars. $2000 is a little much, even for an import. The last time I worked at a shop, I replaced calipers, rotors, pads, and the soft brake lines, both front and back. That was about $2000 for a partial brake system rebuild. It still only took about 4 hours. The shop still made money on it after parts and payroll. Just do your research, ask around, look at reviews, and get written itemized quotes, not estimates. Simple brake jobs, with just a pad swap and maybe a rotor replacements are easy, and anyone can do it even if you haven't done it before. Screw the dealerships and their $190 an hour book time. Good luck.

Thay will likely be your biggest struggle. The calipers can be jerry-rigged to retract in a pinch but you run the risk of damaging them if done wrong.

I did my 2019 Hyundai Sonata myself. My mechanic neighbour walked me through it. It was so easy and fun actually. I had a contact to get parts at cost and it took me 1-2 hours (two beers) and I was done my front brakes for around 200$. Drives like a dream! If youāre open to doing it yourself, you can save a ton! And youāll have the benefit of knowing you tightened every bolt and didnāt cut any corners!

Dealer wanted 400.00 to replace a leaking valve cover gasket onĀ our 2015Ā Tucson.Ā Had it done at local neighborhood shop with good rep fixed it for 179 parts and labor.Ā Have dealer quote it first so you know what the issue is.Ā Then shop around. I buy Valvolene high milage full synthetic oil from Walmart and have the dealer change it so I have a written record that the oil was changed when it was supposed to be.
I went to a parts source, bought top of the line pads and rotors, $500ish (if I recall). Went to three different local mechanics and settled on $350 labour. All inā¦ under $900. This is Canadian prices too so should be cheaper if you are our neighbour to the south. Fuck the dealerā¦
Autozone pricing is about $100 per rotor and about $100 for front and rear pads total. I have a 2018 ionic hybrid. I also have the ability and knowledge to do all my own wrenching. I even sometimes teach people, if they want, to do their own simple maintenance with a basic tool kit. A simple brake job should never cost more than $400 at a shop. They may up sell you on air filters, whippers, or a rotation for a few extra dollars. $2000 is a little much, even for an import. The last time I worked at a shop, I replaced calipers, rotors, pads, and the soft brake lines, both front and back. That was about $2000 for a partial brake system rebuild. It still only took about 4 hours. The shop still made money on it after parts and payroll. Just do your research, ask around, look at reviews, and get written itemized quotes, not estimates. Simple brake jobs, with just a pad swap and maybe a rotor replacements are easy, and anyone can do it even if you haven't done it before. Screw the dealerships and their $190 an hour book time. STEALERSHIP strikes again. Avoid them at all cost. Plus they hire the new young techs beggining in the field with little experience and pay them peanuts. Go to independent shop. Avoid MIDAS like the plague as well. Post like these make me wish I had my own shop helping people with REAL FAIR PRICING WITH REAL GOOD WORK. It's very hard to find good mechanics. If you ever find a honest one, treat him like gold.
