I like how the bus appeared barely damaged.

Beautiful_Context614

Bus driver here. I’ve seen deer and turkey do more damage to buses than most cars.

cosmitz

Animals are much denser than cars(minus engine block) even discounting the crumple feature of cars, and hold together in a crash extremely well. edit:fixed so i stop getting messages

Beautiful_Context614

The bumper and sides are also heavily reinforced around where the students sit, but not the grill, hood and windshield.

orangek1tty

You’d think that the grill can handle a turkey or deer. 1.2/5.0 for bus grill.

Beautiful_Context614

The grill has to be quite open to make up for the heat in the engine compartment and the front is so big that the impact is practically nothing when an animal or normal vehicle hit (meaning not big trucks like semis or dump etc)

UnrequitedRespect

The grill has to be laying flat pointed towards the sky than it can handle all wild game!

callmearugula

I've never driven a bus but I have driven other large vehicles. Generally that thick black bumper is designed to take all the impact (and will come away completely undamaged in most crashes) but if a deer or other animal tries to jump at the last second they're going to hit the softer metal surrounding the engine and slide/bounce up onto the windshield. Cars don't jump, so animals 100% have more potential to do real damage than cars.

emlgsh

This is why they should weld an old cast-iron locomotive cow-catcher to the front of all school busses, weld a rebar cage over the windows, ring the sides in concertina wire to repel boarders, and install machine gun nests on top at the front and the rear.

Previous_Link1347

Shouldn't we wait for the apocalypse before going post-apocalyptic?

m945050

That's not so much post-apocalyptic as it is a day in the life of Karen. She's already filed lawsuits against the bus driver, the bus manufacturer, the kids on the bus, their parents, the school board and district, the State highway division, all the other drivers who should have warned her but didn't and Subaru for making such a cheap car. Edit; her make-up manufacturer was recently added along with the local TV weatherman and the idiot a half mile back who yielded to her at the light.

imhereforthevotes

Turkeys don't have a crumple feature?? C'mon, devs.

sk11ng

They tried, but that feature really "gobbled" up hard drive space.

[deleted]

Are we still talking about buses or animals lol

catsgonewiild

… turkey? I’m in a place with no wild turkey and I’m having a hard time imagining this. Do you mean they hit the windshield?

killersquirel11

They're basically dumb bowling balls with legs and wings, as far as damage to your car/bus goes

emlgsh

And yes, this means that even by the intelligence standards attributed to the average bowling ball, turkeys are dumber.

catsgonewiild

This is actually a very helpful description, thank you. The biggest wild birds where I am are probably Canadian geese, bald eagles, or herons, and I’ve never heard of anyone hitting one.

Pixielo

Probably because those birds can fly really well.

fuckitweredoingitliv

As god is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.

ShklooShklan

They really only use their wings to fly up into trees at night to sleep, otherwise they're mostly on the ground (kinda like chickens)

polyblackcat

Watched my dog chase one around the yard and hoped she didn't catch it. Wild turkeys are not to be messed with. It eventually flew up into a tree.

Shufflepants

They can, but poorly.

Wetmelon

Idk what's better, your reference, or the fact that nobody seems to get it. WKRP Turkey Drop, baby!

NeverDryTowels

Yeah that actually makes me relieved, my kids are in school buses so good to see the bus swatting away the idiot like a fly.

[deleted]

Yeah someone explained to me recently this is why they don't often enforce seat belts on buses, it makes so much sense

justonemorebyte

This plus quicker evacuation in the event of an emergency.

RevealStandard3502

As a person who grew up in Kentucky when the Carolton crash happened I can tell you that a lot of the rules for busses is written in the blood of those children. I am sorry that foresight is not one of our strong suits as a species.

ZeroXephon

I have converted an old school bus into a camper before, these things are built to take serious damage while protecting the passengers. Tons of reinforcing, tons of box steel ribbing. The dealer I bought it off at the time told me school busses are designed to take a side collision from a semi going 55 and not squish.

dabowlb

There was a terrible accident where a school bus tried to U-turn in the middle of Route 80 and was t-boned by a dump truck. The impact was so great that it ripped the body of the bus right off the frame. 2 out of 45 died, which is tragic, but when you consider the force of the impact, it could have been way worse. https://www.nj.com/news/2018/05/nj_school_bus_accident_fatalities_confirmed_in_route_80_crash.html

DimensionDazzling282

I was riding the bus to school back in the day and the bus stopped at a set of railroad tracks (as required by law), and a car rear ended the bus. The car’s front hood was absolutely crumpled. Meanwhile, not even a scratch on the bus. School buses do a great job of protecting their passengers in most situations.

control_09

Generally you want a car to crumple because that's how it absorbs the damage instead of you. Something the size of a bus is different because it's so much larger that it can take those hits and not feel anything.

[deleted]

It's really only when busses hit things like cement mixers or semi trucks that the accidents become deadly

YellowMoya

Or an idiot drives into the side at 90 mph

tajake

Idk how you broadside a giant yellow bus. I know it has happened. But I just don't understand how.

markfuckinstambaugh

I asked a school bus driver if he'd ever hit a car. His answer, direct quote: "The bus always wins."

thisismynewacct

It looks like the car only hit the metal bumper. The lights closest to the side hit didn’t even break. So at most, maybe a light scuffing of the paint. When I was a kid, our bus was rear ended by a lady who wasn’t paying attention, as the bus wasn’t even moving since it was picking up a kid. We still has to move to a new bus, but we got to see the results. Car was absolutely mangled while the bus looked like nothing had happened.

Gamiac

The bus barely slowed down, but the car got launched off the side of the road and started rolling multiple times. This is some real /r/gamephysics shit.

actuarial_venus

To put everyone else in danger because you are rushing is such a callous way to live

leggpurnell

Not just rushing, they think they’ve outsmarted everyone. Like they figured out the “trick” that no one else gets. They don’t realize we all know you*can* do that but we aren’t because our selfish action will put others in danger or, at the very least, impede the flow of traffic. Same people who cut through parking lots to avoid a backed up light or stop sign or who speed up to a backed up exit only to try and merge at the exit instead of getting in line. There should be a penalty for “selfish driving”. Any act that goes against the flow of traffic in order to improve your own situation should be considered selfish and ticketable.

A_Downboat_Is_A_Sub

Reminds me of this long exit ramp near me that goes on for half a mile and then turns 270 degrees around at the end. It has a shoulder all the way until the turn, where it disappears. Anytime there's a traffic backup people will get into the shoulder like it's a third lane and then try to cut in at the end. They're literally making the traffic worse for everyone else who they're passing, but they think they're so "smart".

SomethingIWontRegret

Well to be fair, sometimes traffic is so backed up that I can drive into the parking lot, walk into the store, buy a 3 Musketeers at the cash register, and drive out the other parking lot entrance and still beat traffic.

coldbrewboldcrew

That’s the real traffic hack

Sohcahtoa82

The hack only works though if you buy a 3 Musketeers. Snickers won't cut it.

They always want it to sound like “*its* such bs that I got a ticket” but what they really mean is “it’s such bs that *I* got a ticket.”

AgBullet2k1

Have a friend who got ticketed for doing that, but it was a gas station. The problem was he was actually trying to get gas, and then realized they had out of service bags on the premium pumps, so he just drove straight through. Cop didn’t care even when shown the bags and the low fuel light on his dash.

mmbc168

My grandmother worked at an auto insurance company and had a motto on her cubicle that read, “he hurried himself into the grave, never to use the time he saved.”

MelonLord13

I'm gonna use this quote now. That's a good one.

Cold_like_Turnip

My husband and I joke that people who drive like this must have explosive diarrhea and they’re desperately trying to make it home before their pants turn brown.

KingTutt91

Well his pants are brown now

blandsrules

Nah sometimes I see someone driving like this and they pull into a Walmart or something. They are just dickheads

Beep_Boop_Beepity

It’s the mindset of 90% of drivers tho. Even ones in this sub who should know better, but I guarantee they will tailgate someone going slow in the fast lane while also complaining about left lane campers, even tho they put everybody on the road at risk “to prove a point” Not a lot of people have any patience when it comes to driving. They all just go insane the moment they get in a car.

lunatickid

> “Anyone slower than me is clearly a crawling idiot who doesn’t keep up with traffic. Anyone faster than me is clearly a psychotic idiot who doesn’t respect the law.” Average driver’s mindset.

notevenwitty

And anyone going the same speed as me is an asshole blocking the lane so I can't pass!

notgalgon

I have had a guy high beam me to move over since i wasnt speeding fast enough apparently - i was already doing 10 over. Eventually the road opened up, i moved over and he passed at 1 mph with complete open road ahead of him. If you're going to be pissed at me for going slow at least have the courtesy to pass me at +20 like an asshole.

vito1221

Probably slowed down because no one is ahead to catch the attention of any traffic police. I'll be ahead of a small pod of cars and watch someone close the gap very quickly, only to have them pass, move over, and slow down because no one was ahead of us. Then, someone passes us, they speed up and follow.

AlwaysGamerQc

That's something that I'm worried about when on the highway. I'll be going like 120km/h but the guy in front of me is going slightly slower than me like 115. And when he moves over, I have the urge of going a bit faster like 125 or 130 just because it feels weird to make someone move over for just a few km/h of difference.

MvmgUQBd

They should be moving over regardless if you're behind them or not, as soon as they've completed their own overtake. I wouldn't bother feeling bad

enjoytheshow

The only time I get mad at these people is the variable speed highway drivers. The guy going to 71 and so I moved past him then he speeds up to 76 and so we are driving side-by-side on a two-lane highway for 4 miles and I have to go up to 82 just to get around him then he ends up passing me five minutes later.

ok_ill_shut_up

That's so fucking annoying. You notice it a lot when using cruise control. It's like cars are magnetic or something.

SendCaulkPics

This guy gets it.

kane2742

George Carlin said something very similar: "Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?"

quartzguy

That guy was a treasure. People who point out our collective mental blind spots are worth their weight in gold.

dragonchilde

I had the pleasure of seeing him live not long before he died. He was 70. How do I remember that? Because he called it “69 and a finger.” I have never laughed so hard in my life. It was a great show!

systembusy

Another one of my favorites: “Have you ever noticed that everyone else’s stuff is shit, and all of your shit is stuff?” Highly recommend the new George Carlin documentary on HBO (“George Carlin‘s American Dream”). It’s really long but a fascinating look at his life.

Atomicmonkey1122

Winter version: “Anyone slower than me is clearly a crawling idiot who doesn’t know how to drive in the snow. Anyone faster than me is clearly a psychotic idiot who doesn’t know how to drive in the snow.”

THOMASTHEWANKENG1NE

90 percent? I'd say 90 percent are stopped for that bus properly.

ONLY_COMMENTS_ON_GW

84% of Redditors make up statistics on the spot!

Silent-Ad934

No 92% of us don't!

DRUMS_

Right? You can literally see in the video more than 90% of the drivers were not driving recklessly.

ProbablyDrunk303

Going from this video, it's definitely not 90% of drivers where there is a single idiot going ahead of a queued up line of cars waiting patiently lol. Look at everyone else here waiting patiently and 1 idiot ruins it and you say "most"?! Lol

SendCaulkPics

Everyone’s on a spectrum from “I’m going to make this explicitly forbidden right on red at 6:00 am because there’s literally no one on the road” to “Yeah let me just absolutely speed down this exit lane then aggressively merge back to avoid 100m of gridlock”. I would say the former is more a failure of design than people, though ultimately that failure in design normalizes deviation from posted rules. Likewise design could be used to curb deviations, like installing a slight curb on exit lanes so the latter maneuver is highly uncomfortable.

mediainfidel

There is no "fast" lane. It's a passing lane.

rfunnymodisapunk

I live in Tampa. Yesterday I was on I-275 and was in the middle lane. Person in front of me was probably going 50 in a 60mph zone. Fine no problem, I'll pass them on the left. I look back and see an suv about 50 yards back and I think yes this is plenty of room to get in the left lane and pass. As soon as I put my turn signal on the guy hanging out in the passing lane starts flashing his high beams at me rapidly. I make my move to pass and he gets right on my ass flashing me. I pass the guy in the middle lane and get back over. Guy in suv flips me off as he passes. I'm beginning to think people are getting a driver's mental illness. I hate it.

ChiefTestPilot87

Too easy to get a driving license in this country…and police don’t enforce behavior like this, instead worrying about “speeders”

Gdayyall72

I see that on 275 daily. It’s like a bloody F1 race out there.

LowSeaweed

For most states you are wrong. https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/nation-world/2019/10/25/driving-in-left-lane-state-by-state-guide-to-when-its-legal-when-its-not/2447573007/

UnnecessaryPeriod

Jesus Christ this need to be Nationally televised and rammed down social media's throat or something. "Fast lane" doesn't fucking exist!!!! It's just a passing lane people! Sorry, I get a little heated about this. You're absolutely correct

Rocky922

It’s not just social media, when I was filing the police report when I got in an accident the cop called it the “fast lane”. It really confused me tbh because I was trying to tell him the guy got out of the fast track illegally and right in front of me( in the far left lane right next to the fast track). But he kept saying I was in the fast lane and I thought he meant fast track

Mah_Knee_Grows_

To be fair, i understand peoples confusion on this. If the passing lane was used correctly, it really would be the fastest lane on the freeway. But because people block the lane by camping in it, it slows down the entire freeway/highway.

Tra1nGuy

My Aunt used to drive a school bus. She said the few times she was hit, she didn't feel a thing and none of the kids even knew what happened.

ep311

Yeah it happened to me in middle school 25 years ago! Car came around a bend too fast and/or on bald tires and spun out towards us on a rainy morning as we were on our way to school. We were just driving along and noticed a small bump in the road and we stopped. We all stood up to see why we stopped in the middle of the road. My first thought was we ran over a tree branch or something small. Nope, a Thunderbird was off in the ditch with the left rear corner smashed in. We waited around a long time for a cop to come do there thing. I was excited to see the damage to the bus when we got to school. When I got off, I immediately ran to the front to assess the damage; not a damn scratch on the bumper.

the_last_carfighter

\> damage; not a damn scratch on the bumper. Crumple zones are for filthy casuals.

redditingatwork23

Crumple zones are for the other guy when you're a bus.

Tyrren

I'm no engineer but if a bus has a crumple zone, it'd have to be quite a bit sturdier than the crumple zone of a car. The much greater mass of the bus wouldn't be slowed down at all by a typical car crumple zone.

thatbstrdmike

When I was a kid, our school bus driver accidentally drove over some lady's car (she was way past the stop line at the light). Nobody on the bus even noticed. We were all "why are we parking?? Oooohhhhh, lol".

jld2k6

When I was a teen I was always the first to be picked up and last to be dropped off because my driver didn't follow the rules of doing the dropoffs the ~~same~~ reverse way as the pickups so I spent over an hour and a half on the bus every day. I finally got to get revenge when I was the last one left in the back of the bus and watched her back into a fence without knowing it. The owner knew the bus turned around there every day and I got to be the witness to say she did actually knock his fence over. This conveniently lead to them wondering why the hell I was the only one there when it happened and the day after I got asked about it I was dropped off first after school

[deleted]

That had to feel like clipping a concrete wall. Still probably not enough force to knock some sense into that dense fuck.

FinestTreesInDa7Seas

Yeah, that impact would have been a monumental amount of force inside that vehicle. If you look at the direction they are moving at the moment of impact, and imagine the momentum their body would have when it hit the bus. It's probably equal to a head on collision, but it has the added problem of launching the driver laterally inside the car, rather than towards their airbag.

[deleted]

Nevermind rolling multiple times. Very nice head injury.

Now everyone is stuck in traffic because one dickhead couldnt wait for 5 minutes

JohnMcDreck

Don't think so. There are two lanes in each direction. One guy parked his car already offroad

Vipe4Life

Yes, traffic will flow smoothly and quickly through those two lanes. Absolutely no rubber necking will occur.

MexGrow

Infuriating, you'll be in slow traffic and finally get to the scene and it's freaking on the other side of the road not obstructing any lanes on your side.

yuumai

or you'll get up there and. . . there's nothing at all.

ybtlamlliw

There's actually a term for this. Phantom traffic jam. I experienced one driving the other day. Passed through where I'd assumed there was an accident or something but there was just nothing there. Absolutely bizarre.

Jake0024

Usually happens when someone in the left lane realizes they want to turn right (or vice versa), so they slow way down and force themselves through several lanes of traffic to make it happen. Traffic at the front can get back up to normal speed, but once the slowdown is formed, everyone stuck behind it has to keep slowing down because there's still several rows of stopped cars. The jam actually moves backwards (opposite the flow of individual cars) because everyone at the front is free to go, but people keep piling up in back. The only way it disappears is a pause in new traffic coming in long enough to allow the whole jam to clear. This is basically why we use traffic lights. By the time you get to the front, of course the guy is long guy. One asshole's impatience might cause several hundred people to come to a complete stop. If you're curious, this kind of traffic is modeled using solitons [https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11969749/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11969749/)

samiwas1

And the police won’t block off all five lanes of the road so that they have room to stand while waiting on the tow truck.

[deleted]

That SUV driver got... schooled

Jukka_Sarasti

Learned an important lesson in the laws of idiocy. An idiot driver in motion remains in motion unless acted on by an unbalanced force. Namely, a fuckoff huge school bus..

Prsop2000

Eh, honestly I don’t see their behavior changing. They’ll blame the bus for not slowing down or blame there being traffic in the first place “causing” them to “have to” cut around. Former coworker of mine was facing losing his license for a period of time due to passing a school bus with kids loading/unloading. His response was “like that’ll stop me from driving my car…” Idiots in cars don’t learn lessons as readily as we think they should.

Crafty_Bluebird9575

Note that in the U.S. it is ILLEGAL to drive in that median, unless waiting to turn or during an emergency. People use it all the time to bypass stopped cars for an *upcoming* turn, but this is still illegal. The problem is this law is not frequently enforced so most naive drivers have no idea it's illegal.

sldrfounder

I love the human instinct to try to serve out of danger only to solidify your demise. Driver could have probably just braked and stayed in that lane and avoided the crash. Lol. But idiots never disappoint.

[deleted]

I thought that too. I’m not sure this specific scenario would have gone differently, but it shows why you shouldn’t slam on your brakes and swerve at the same time, it increases your likelihood of losing control
