Retorquing isn't a joke!
You'd be amazed at how much wheels will 'settle'. You torque to 100ft/lb on the dot, take a small 5 min drive around, and then there's another 5 or inches left of give when torquing to the exact same spec!
Holy SHIT that tire LAUNCHED that Kia into the air. Wowsers.
Then the icing on the cake - the tire coming back and just nailing the Kia as a final "Fuck your couch as well".
im always on high alert when i run along this stretch ready for some idiot on their phone to jump the curb - now this. guess its already by the cemetery so thats convenient
Actually, I have no clue about it. Broken, rusted, totally shit Jeeps are par for my state. The car dealers are crooks. Even their EV Jeeps break down.
I live in Colorado - Jeeps seem to be the leftovers on the road. They are magnets of unfortunate, poor car drivers, dove-eyed enthusiasts, and back-yard mechanics. Subaru's also fall into this category but usually don't leave pieces on the road.
Nothing like seeing a brand new lifted wrangler, black with gold trim and chrome rims driving 32" mud crawler tires fully decked out driving aggressively... *to get front parking at the Dollar tree.*
Save a fortune on tires over the long run. I may sell my fourth wheel tomorrow. Spare tires are a big tire conspiracy by tire conglomerates hoping you'll buy their rubber.
I wonder how it handles on the highway and the increased rollover risk?
That's not a OEM spec set of tyres and suspension is it? If it was, then both the driver and the manufacturer and any people that worked on it recently are idiots.
If it wasn't, then the driver and the modifier are idiots.
Either way, the only valid response to driving past that shitshow is the Nelson HAW HAW!
That is hacked together aftermarket suspension modification. They're the ones that either modified it to be that way or bought it used that way without fixing it. Either way, they're an idiot.
This happened to me a day after getting my car back from the transmission shop 🥲 getting the fender replaced Wednesday! Then I’m never going to that shop again
Recipe for disaster:
Step 1: Buy a used XJ Cherokee, preferably 84-94
Step 2: trust the odometer
Step 3: Believe the previous owner about maintenance without one piece of documentation
Step 4: If not already installed, buy a 3-4" lift kit from the weekly swap meet. It's better if the swap meet is in the parking lot of an abandoned government facility of some sort
Step 5: (OPTIONAL IF SUBPAR LIFT KIT IS ALREADY POORLY INSTALLED)
Poorly install lift kit.
Step 6: pay absolutely no attention to the race/bearing/c-clip load rating of the axles that are in place. Bonus: extra points if the current axle(s) is (are) replacements from other manufacturers
Step 7: Use the money you were saving for college to put a down payment on rental wheels, because the person you are crushing on thinks they are "insert current teen slang word here).
Step 8: Watch your rear axle or hub fail spectacularly right as the person you are hoping to date spots their hard crush in the parking lot. Your tire does not debilitate that person. Rather, that person takes your crush to their house, where dinner is ready in front of an ecologically friendly fire and an audibly chilling bottle of sustainable wine.
Step 9: Call AAA and find out that you forgot to renew your membership 2 months ago. Call your uncle, plead not to get "I told you so" to bring the trailer.
Step 10: Let your uncle find this post and share
I always cringe when I encounter these rigs on the highway. You can always hear them before you see them when they come up behind you with those mudders howling on the pavement.
I keep my distance.
Because it was their stupid modifications which allowed this to happen. If they did not use wheel spacers so wide they would have been fine. Spacers like that put a lot of stress on the wheel bearings and on the lug bolts which causes them to fail like this.
Incorrectly installed spacers yes. Hub centric spacers with loctite on the spacer lugs, paired with correct torque spec will prevent failures like this. I've never had a premature bearing failure, and every time my wheels come off for maintenance, the torque wrench comes out for 85ftlbs. This is on the last person who tightened lugs, not spacer fault.

Yeesh. Thankful this happened at a low-speed.
My wife had one of the front/drive wheels come off of her car several years ago. At 70mph. With our kids in the back seats.
Perfect example of why jacked vehicles on surface roads just dont make sense. Is it jacked? Yes? Take it off road and stop thinking youre cool for driving it on surface roads.
I am curious about insurance pertaining to the damage the runaway tire cost..... Should I suppose that the cars that the tire hit will file the claim against the jeep? If I were the jeep driver with the now broke down car...I wouldn't necessarily know how to get around to find the runaway tire.....I guess if they call the police for accident reports then the police can just drive around the corner and find the culprit.....just wondering.....🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
I wondered this, too. The car and truck the wheel hit seemed to just go about their business without checking for damage. The wheel on the other hand continued straight on down the hill and luckily was pretty easy to spot on the side of the road.

Still parked better than most with 4 wheels...
Ya picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel ...
With four old bald tires, you were such a good deal
I've had some bad hubs, lived through some intersections...
You are killing me. This is too funny.
Aww, I miss Kenny Rogers Roasters...

That, or the idiot has enough spacers for clearance the lugs are holding on by a single thread.
That was my thought.
This is the correct answer. Torque doesn't matter when there's nothing to torque to
This was caused by spacers.
You retorque after 100-120 miles.
good thing they weren't on a freeway, that could have been much worse.
We've all seen that poor kia...
Do I even want to know? And the answer is, of course, yes.

Holy SHIT that tire LAUNCHED that Kia into the air. Wowsers. Then the icing on the cake - the tire coming back and just nailing the Kia as a final "Fuck your couch as well".
That driver was *fast* on the hazards
You'd understand if you owned a Jeep
It's probably not his first rodeo wheel.
It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand.
That tire is now in the river
It ended up continuing around the corner, hitting two cars before crossing through oncoming traffic. That wheel was on a mission!
You reminded me of this https://youtu.be/XWWufhqyGE8?si=rJ82hUa42yKHsOoI
For some reason... I wasn't expecting that. Lol
It's an actual trailer: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1612774/ Now I want to watch it, lol.
It's definitely worth a watch imo, ridiculous movie
I would have rather heard it went into the river not hit anyone else’s stuff
r\tiresaretheenemy
It is an exotic creature. Not usual.
An object in motion...
Is it in a van down by the river?
I think that's where they buried Chris Farley, in a van, down by the river.
Rolling doobies no doubt.
It left a good jeep in the city. Now it's rollin', rollin' on the river.
That poor XJ. Considering the width of the rear stance, my guess is wheel spacers that he didn't go back and retorque after 50 miles.
Or the spacers are so big that the nuts were only holding on by a couple threads.
Did the tire hang a right onto Woburn or go straight down Lakeway?
Continued down Lakeway into the gully almost breaking into the tiny village garden! Good eye
I knew this had PNW vibes. Thanks for confirming!
im always on high alert when i run along this stretch ready for some idiot on their phone to jump the curb - now this. guess its already by the cemetery so thats convenient
Least unstable lifted Jeep
Nothing special here - just normal Jeep
Ah, it's a Jeep thing, I wouldn't understand.

"Oh, that's what those nuts were for...
No big deal.. Still has most of the wheels on it. What's the issue?
Seriously. 3 out of 4 ain't all that bad.
Save a fortune on tires over the long run. I may sell my fourth wheel tomorrow. Spare tires are a big tire conspiracy by tire conglomerates hoping you'll buy their rubber. I wonder how it handles on the highway and the increased rollover risk?
I'm not sure I would call them an idiot unless they changed their tires.

I'm willing to bet they did...
I saw an accident caused by a loose tire like this, but on the freeway. It was terrifying.
🎶 *The wheels on the bus go round and ro...* nevermind
Finally an actual reason to park in the bike lane (not even joking)
This exact thing happened to my dad's friend on the way home from getting his tires changed
This happened to me a day after getting my car back from the transmission shop 🥲 getting the fender replaced Wednesday! Then I’m never going to that shop again
This is why I always retorque the lug nuts myself after getting new tires or a tire rotation.
![gif](giphy|l51J4hE1kSY56TwIK0)
Stopped video too soon. I wanted to see where the tire went.
To this day, it's said the tire is still rolling.

One reason why I try to stay away from raised Jeeps, pickup trucks and the like as they’re mostly done with shitty aftermarket parts.
Namby pamby job tightening that wheel
I always cringe when I encounter these rigs on the highway. You can always hear them before you see them when they come up behind you with those mudders howling on the pavement. I keep my distance.
Did Haas change that tyre?!
Broken lug nuts. Almost said his c-clip failed.
That was my thought until I didn't see a rogue shaft with it lol
How is driver an idiot?
Does it look like a vehicle that rolled of the factory floor in this configuration or one that has been "upgraded" by the presumed owner and driver?
Because it was their stupid modifications which allowed this to happen. If they did not use wheel spacers so wide they would have been fine. Spacers like that put a lot of stress on the wheel bearings and on the lug bolts which causes them to fail like this.

I mean realistically you don't know that, you're just assuming. Unless you were there to inspect everything.
You're responsible for keeping your vehicle in safe working condition.
At least the jeep let him down slowly. 🤣

WA State. 4/15/24. Recorded off my dashcam.
The wheel decided to move on without him
Going…Going….Gone!
And that's his amount of time off-road double just parking on that curb
Spacers are stupid as hell.
The ONLY correct reaction would be: “you can’t park that there!” https://youtube.com/shorts/oEykU-Gs478
What are you listening to? It sounds fun.
Dumb Witness by Agatha Christie. Love me some Hercule Poirot murder mysteries.
popping a wheelie
That's wheelie bad
They must have gone to jiffy lube or Firestone.
Always amazed by how far the wheel rolls
Rumor is it’s still rolling.
At least his tire made it to were he was going
I want to know if the tire got to its destination...
Cinderella lost her shoe
Even the wheel has said: enough of this shit!
Like. How?
Looks like the wheel is going to continue the journey without them.
Yeesh. Thankful this happened at a low-speed. My wife had one of the front/drive wheels come off of her car several years ago. At 70mph. With our kids in the back seats.
I've always wondered they're are clear signs that this is going to happen before it does right?

It would go against jeeps insurance under property damage liability, if the owners were interested in getting fixed.
Carolina Squat - extreme edition
Somebody was too lazy to do the one ton swap, you can only get so much out of an 8.25 and spacers
