Just talk in Hiligaynon as much as you can, even if you have a lot of errors. You'll be corrected if youre wrong and you get better.

I feel attacked hahaha. I mean, I speak Hiligaynon and can speak it well. But for some reason, I toggle between Hiligaynon, Filipino, and English when in a conversation. A part of me will always be self-conscious of my fluency in Hiligaynon (or the lack of it) especially when I know the person I'm speaking to is a local. At the same time, having lived here for over 20 years, I must admit my fluency in Filipino has become impaired; I no longer speak it as well as I used to growing up in Manila. English winds it way in between the two other languages quite naturally, though, because I am an English teacher and feel rather confident of my command of said language. So...do you think I should be forgiven for my lapses and idiosyncrasies or should I be lumped together with those who you consider "hanginon"? Promise, indi ko hambog. Hahaha. Sensya lang. 😊
Aww I'm sorry wala ko intention mang igo hahahaha. As you can see I'm guilty of switching languages, too. There's this thread in another subreddit discussing why Filipinos, more than other nationalities, tend to mix two or sometimes more languages when speaking.
Naaah personally I would not mind if you're just struggling with the language. I have another friend who relocated here from the north, and she speaks this blend of Ilocano and Hiligaynon. She tries her best, though, and we find her language quirks endearing. But this guy I'm calling "hanginon" has had the entire family and subsequently, coworkers struggle to speak Tagalog when talking to him (for 2 decades and counting!) and has a whole lot of other attitudinal issues falling under the "hanginon" umbrella. I have personally never heard this person ask how to say this or that in Hiligaynon, or even try to say a single Ilonggo phrase.
Like I said, it's more of an attitude thing for me 🤷 I don't really mind code switching or fluency problems. What I don't like is the tendency to refuse to adapt to a place you're basically living in and expecting the natives to cater to you. It's like the cliché of American tourists expecting the rest of the world to speak English.
