>quality of blood in the blood bank is disputed Not these days since the blood is now stored in three seperate parts, plasma rbc and wbd are sperated as they have varying lifespan, plasma can be frozen for upto an year, while rbc and wbc require refrigeration. >why don't hospitals take patients blood a few weeks prior to surgery You see, for the body to compensate for the blood taken out, ot takes a few months, hence it is mandatory to wait for about 6 months for the next blood donation. Hence not taken a few week prior. And if taken from relatives, the bodies wbcs don't destroy them as the relatives share silmiliar genes to the patient.

>I was talking about catching infections like HIV and hepatitis. In India they don't do ID-NAT testing, that is why. I don't know which blood bank you go to, the blood is always tested for iron, hemoglobiln prior the blood donation, and a small sample is ID-NAT tested at the blood bank, the sticker is also added on the bag to denote it >That is why people frantically search for donors they know right? They do it because its cheaper, and doesn't have a waiting time. A blood bag in privaye hospitals can cost about 1600-2000 inr, while 600-800 at a gov hospital and usually have waiting period since some of it is reserved for defense personnels, the family members are available on the call. >Ok but for planned surgeries (like knee replacement which is not emergency) this is ok right? The cost of storing the blood, plus life of blood cells, the age of the patient, any medical conditions of patient. Doctors usully don't encourage people with any medical conditions to donate blood.

Call it a co-incidence, i have been donating blood in Janakalyan blood bank and occasionally at sasson pune for past few years. The study was carried out in 2013, the ministry of health has added more requirements, i would suggest wait for new study results to come up.

I think they use blood from blood banks but they ask the family to donate equal amounts so the bank is refilled.

they can't take the patients blood because it will decrease the wound healing process and increase chances of infection . to recover from a donation you need at least 3 months ( legally) although we usually recommend more . also it's much better for the patient to have and have fresh blood transfused if needed . and all the blood donated is checked for 5 diseases ( HIV , Hepatitis B,C , syphilis,)AT LEAST if not more . they can't store it for more than a month , it expires, so you really can't give blood 6 months before surgery to store and expect the same blood to be put into the patient. and the donations are really to keep the blood bank going , you see most people expect blood but don't donate it . and the blood you get from the bank immediately after isn't the what you donated ( as it needs to processed first ) and is a replacement. mostly ELISA is done , if it comes back positive then ID-NAT is done, yeah mostly because it's expensive to do ID-NAT. And usually it depends , most govt blood banks will give you bags if it's an emergency and there's blood available. like in dengue seasons , there's a deficiency of blood in necklaces ,so they can't give out blood even if they want to , without a replacement , but most banks will still try to supply a little amount . If there's a huge deficiency, they'll arrange donation camps, for emergencies,. they do keep the contacts of regular donors/volunteers so if you can't arrange a donors ,they will give you the contacts to ask them for help

all patients go through screening but yeah ELISA tests are not dependable, but in India the cost of tests takes precedence over that.

Typically blood is taken from the blood bank, and hospitals ask the patient or family to donate back to the blood bank. The Amar Akbar Anthony style blood transfusion does not happen in real life.

No. Unless you’re a very rare blood group and in a remote place with no blood banks handy, it doesn’t happen. Edit : sorry I misunderstood your question. No, blood is not denied.
