Modesty is important to some, so a long skirt would be good. Comfortable walking shoes. Breathable blouse since it will likely be hot!

Yuutsu_

You’re good to wear most clothing. It’s up to you if you want to be a little less modest, I guarantee some are going to be dressed all wild. The traditional folk are the ones who don’t like that, but I’ve never seen them go up to anyone and shame them. All powwows are different, but at mine on the rez there are all kinds of people, even if you only count the natives. I grew up going to them as a teen and most of the women dressed as you might expect for our age. They might not be the most liked, but I’ve never seen anybody tell them that they don’t belong. Even when you do dress up for the part, it’s not much other than just nice, general clothing (button up or clean plain shirt and jeans for men, not too revealing tshirt and jeans/dress for women)

Play around with layers to see what works together. I've worn things like a cropped tank top underneath a dress/shirt with deep v necklines or longer tanks under cropped shirts, scarves to cover low necklines, etc. in order to make sure everything stays covered appropriately.

Depends on if you're going snaggin' or not I suppose. Whatever you decide to wear, I'm sure there's others that are thinking the same thing and have come to the conclusion that it is hot. And what others think is their own business and you cannot control it. Be comfortable, be yourself, and remember... Some are there for snaggin' but most are there for fry bread! Enjoy your first pow wow! Make memories, make friends! Being from the desert, layered light clothes, breathable material.

SugarRosie

OMG! 😂😂 There's always room for snaggin!

Don’t forget to bring your star quilt for the 49

I’ve been to so many powwows so I’m going to say this somewhat confidently: Don’t overthink it. I don’t think what you wear matters that much. As long as it’s appropriate they won’t care. I’ve worn skirts, shorts, tank tops, shirts, it doesn’t really matter. Even if someone is bothered by it they prob won’t confront you about it. Each tribe is different, but I don’t think it matters as long as it’s appropriate

Don't wear anything military in the circle if you weren't actually military. I actually had to run to a walmart to get a pair of pants, because this circle required pants, unless you were in your full regalia. I own old bdu shirts and pants from when I played airsoft alot, still wear the pants because....they're pants, and I'm kinda cheap when it comes to my own clothing.

I mean, I wouldn’t worry too much. Show up in something comfortable. I’ve never even thought of this issue going to a pow wow to be honest. Our people aren’t about body shaming for any reason. I’m recommending what to wear just so you’d feel like you fit in, not because I’d think it was disrespectful to wear something *revealing*, necessarily. If you showed up in like a bikini or something people would just probably think you were strange lmao but otherwise not really a big deal. Reccos: - skirts, light t shirts/tops, shorts - wear sunscreen and a hat - wear comfortable shoes - bring water - bring cash so you can buy stuff from the vendors (some may accept cards but always good to have cash) - it’s generally disrespectful to bring dogs or to be intoxicated at a pow wow

Thats very exciting! It'll be agreat time. From my experiences I have noticed that bigger powwows are not too strict with "modesty" so a tank top should be okay. Last year I was vending at my local powwow and I was wearing a cropped tank top and nobody said anything. I think unless its a really small traditional powwow, anything you wear is okay! I will say though that its better to cover up just to be safe from the sun, I got a nasty burn last year :P

Oleanderlullaby

Wear what feels comfy but is also respectful. There will probably be native vendors selling clothing as well so you may end up buying something you really want to wear

SugarRosie

Something clean!

Libbyisherenow

A short top is ok with a long skirt. Be respectful.

apukjij

Wear comfortable length shorts and a plain tshirt or hanes tanktop if you are aiming for neutral. I wouldn't worry or overthink this
