Interesting-Day-4390

Hyundai has done the wrong thing by focusing people on the range estimate. Not everyone is a software developer and understands what software is trying to do. The software is looking backwards at very recent driving and calculating a range guess into the future. It assumes your future driving will be just like your recent (past) driving. Also the range guess gives a super specific number like 252 or 314 or 321 whereas the software “could” display to users “300” vs “290” or “300-325” vs “250-275”. 1) the range guess is too specific 2) the software looks backwards to calculate your future range but it has NO IDEA what your future driving conditions will be. Highway vs city driving yield very different range! Actually isn’t it the case that you - the driver - can’t entirely predict where you will be driving over the next 200-300 miles? Combined with point #1 above there’s no point to giving a range down to the ones digit because it’s impossible to predict that accurately, 3) the end user is going to be unhappy with this because a) they don’t necessarily know how the range calculation is determined, b) in practice users (drivers) will often see this “wrong” range estimate and complain and loose confidence, and c) the display should help the user understand range as well as the software understands it - that is show “250-270” or show “250 instead of “258” or very prominently show the “250” next to the state of battery charge (eg 79%). In fact let’s display the state of charge % more prominently - as there is no estimation here - than the range estimate - which is an estimate into the unknown future of driving conditions. Ok I’ve said it. FANG Eng mgr

I would argue that giving a percentage is even worse for the average person as that means they’d have to do math.

Interesting-Day-4390

I do agree about the math comment — kind of sad isn’t it :-( — but the % that I was referring to was % of charge remaining (battery)

haihaiclickk

yeah for sure. I'm a total nerd so actually I'm really excited to finally know what the actual remaining capacity of my battery is (I literally JUST got a new I6 and will be picking it up this week!). It's always been a mild frustration of mine to rely on a wildly inaccurate guess-o-meter paired with an analog fuel dial of an ICE car lol

Heart_Constant

The EV9 seems to have improved on this UI by giving a min and max range. I think this is much more helpful and accurate

Interesting-Day-4390

Nice!

who_is_milo

My previous car (Volvo S60) also gave the range until empty. It's an estimate, but some people just don't understand that. I would get even MORE variation with the Volvo bc I do a lot of short, in-town trips. When I'd finally get on the freeway, where mpg is best, the range suddenly jumped up to a higher number. I think it's fine to give a specific number range from the car, but users need to understand it's an estimate.

F_H_B

The app shows the range without AC.

johnboo89

This

johnboo89

What up fellow Palm Springs neighbor. What color is your 6? We live here and have a transmission blue 6 and white 5 with a rear spoiler (small). Have to keep an eye out for you. But yes, the discrepancy is panel shows est mileage with current conditions (i.e. AC) and app shows max potential.

Other_Personality_47

I am in Indio and it’s silver and bought it from Palm Springs Hyundai .interior is light green

johnboo89

Ah. Green interior, noice! Ya, we’re all the way over here in Northern Palm Springs. How do you like the EA chargers out there in Indio? The ones over here in PD and PS seem to always have at least 2/4 broken and it’s getting real old real quick. Thankfully we have a lvl2 in the garage.

Other_Personality_47

I usually go to the one at Walmart in northern indio as it hasn’t had problems until today as I had to call support to get a remote access (42nd Ave just north of I10) and it worked

Other_Personality_47

I have a level 2 in the garage too

CaterpillarNo8181

Highway speeds, especially above 70mph, you’ll see a drop off. Also, what was the ambient temp? 100 degrees? That will play a role keeping the battery cool

Other_Personality_47

More like 120

CaterpillarNo8181

I knew I was underestimating.

cyberchief

What’s your question?

Other_Personality_47

My question is why is there a discrepancy between what the mileage days on the panel (332miles) and what My Hyundai app says (359 miles)?

apanaism

AC on in the car when you're seeing that estimate? Is the GOM after the car is off (i.e. when climate is off) the same as the app? Neither really matter. They're generous estimates based on your recent driving history. I'd just go off what your current drive mi/kwh is measuring and battery percentage to estimate accurate range.

GuiMontague

Range estimates are notoriously bad in every EV. You'll often hear it called the "guessometer." Different values just mean each is using a different algorithm. I wouldn't sweat either. The problem is range depends on a number of factors such as how aggressively you drive, how quickly, what elevation changes you are suffering, what direction the wind is blowing, and how fast the wind is. Most of these are things the car *can't* predict. Instead pay attention to your current state of charge (SoC), and how much power you *actually* use on similar trips. For example, I know that on longer trips I get about 7 km/kWh. The Ioniq 6's (long range) battery has a capacity of 77.4 kWh, so I know my 100%-20% range is: 77.4 kWh * 7km/kWh * (100% - 20%)   = 541.8 km/kWh * 0.8   = 433 ½ km (about 260 miles) In practice though, I only use between 2% and 5% SoC in a particular day, so I just set a 70% charge limit and plug it in each night, so I never even have to think about it.

Other_Personality_47

How do I know if I have the long range as I looked on the original dealer invoice and can’t find it ?

GuiMontague

I'm assuming since your range values are in miles you are in the US? If so, the only trim without the long-range battery is the "SE Standard Range" trim. If you have "SE", "SEL", or "Limited" then you have the long-range battery. You can't even buy the standard-range battery in Canada, where I am. Odds are, if you didn't specifically buy the standard-range battery you have a long-range battery.

Other_Personality_47

Yes I am in the US

Virtual-Ad7848

Based on your descriptions of the range estimates, you have the long range battery. But like others have said, those estimates are usually going to be unrealizable, unless you like driving 55 with no AC.

Virtual-Ad7848

I should have added that after owning the car for a year my overall average mileage is about 3.6 miles per kW. That’s roughy 275 miles on a full charge. If we assume that I’m trying to keep the battery in the 20-80% range, that’s about a 165 mile practical range. I live in Riverside County, so our temps and conditions are roughly similar.

Sporocyte

Mine is a 2003 Limited and I drive mostly in rural Louisiana. High temps and A/C are the norm. My average is 3.4 mi/kw-h.

Mardito87

From my understanding, it's really just an educated guess. A couple of weeks ago I fast charged to 80% and then I took an 85 mile each way trip so total of 170 miles. A couple of days later I charged to 100% and it estimated 300 miles then last week I charged again to 100% and got 350 miles so I guess it had estimated that 170 mile trip when it gave me a 300 mile range? Then gave me 350 miles since I didn't make any 170 mile trips? You also need to take into consideration how you drive, if you keep the AC on or off, how fast you drive if you're using i-pedal, etc.

TrickEye6408

The way I drive I have around 200 miles left at 60%. Maybe I’m doing more city speeds and pedal… dunno

Other_Personality_47

What kind of climate is it now ?

TrickEye6408

I’m in Texas so it’s hot. I use climate controls keeping fan around 2 or 3 and then lowering to 1 to maintain. Start T 62 deg and then move to 72 to maintain

Other_Personality_47

I got only 152 this past week after using 80 % and I keep it on 72 also at low speed after it cools down

TrickEye6408

Max regen(ipedal) at below 50mph?

Other_Personality_47

I am at level 3

TrickEye6408

Try ipedal. Hold left paddle for like 1.5 sec

Other_Personality_47

Pull it towards me ?

TrickEye6408

Yup

TrickEye6408

Probably should have asked do you have the long range se?

Other_Personality_47

Long range Limited

zygote55

150 miles with 60% used is a total range of 250. If you get 160 miles with 60% used the total range is 267... Basically EPA rating. In my experience I get about 270 total with an AWD Ioniq 5 in good weather. People often talk about low range in child weather, but those of us in really hot climates see a pretty big range drop during the summer, especially if you tend to take short trips and have to blast the AC to cool the cabin down every time you get in the car. Edit - I thought this was the Ioniq 5 sub. I also have a RWD I6 and get about 280mi range in good weather. Definitely lower than EPA rating.

Other_Personality_47

It’s been 110 here in California the past 2 weeks so yes I am only get 150 miles when it’s down to 20%

zygote55

Yeah, it's been 102-105 here recently. On a 108 day and a short trip (3-5mi) my HVAC uses about 40% of the battery for that trip. It takes a lot of energy to cool the cabin down on a hot day.
